Problem

quest/m0/replay.md: the studio cannot replay the last seconds of the program or a source, slow them down, or save them as a clip, the way an operator does after a goal or a fail.

Approach

The plan still holds at the current pin: the studio's tracks already keep their last 30 s (hang's MAX_AGE) whoever watches, and a subscription range anchored by Time addresses them. moq-dev/moq#7310 only changes how a time start resolves on a track whose handler serves history (an archive); on the studio's own tracks it resolves from the cache as before, and on a received broadcast it needs a wire that carries time anchors (moq-lite-07) or the subscription is refused. No moq change is needed.

  • moq_scene::replay::Take copies the groups covering [end - length, end] of a broadcast's video and audio into a finished broadcast of its own, sharing each frame's payload. It is synchronous and copies only what is readable at that moment, polling the subscription, groups, and frames once with a no-op waiter. So it never waits on a publisher: a still screen, a stalled broadcast, a group still in transit, or a track whose publisher never describes it cannot hang a replay or a clip. A rendition that is not described yet is left out. Groups come in arrival order, which over a session is not their own, so the take reads every ready group and writes them in sequence order. To play, each group keeps its frames through the last one presented inside the span, so a B-frame there keeps a reference presented after the end. For a clip (Take::clip), each group stops before its first frame presented after the end, so the clip shows nothing past it, at the cost of the pictures decoded after that frame. The take declares its first group as the track's start and turns groups that are not there into dropped groups, so a gap replays as a gap. Nothing ages a take's groups, so a 25% replay that runs 4x longer than the span still has all of it.
  • Bounded by design: a take is at most MAX_LENGTH (30 s, the tracks' own retention) of what the studio already holds, copies share payloads with the cache rather than duplicating them, a replay source holds only the take it is playing, which a new replay replaces and which is dropped once played, a replay plays at no less than 1% speed, and a clip's take is dropped once written. A hostile broadcast source can make a take hold no more than what its live playback already made the studio hold.
  • Source::Replay (kind = "replay") is a source that plays takes: it decodes the take with moq_video/moq_audio consumers and shows each picture t / speed after the replay starts, clears to transparent when a new replay starts, at gaps, and at the end, and plays sound only at 100%. With --connect, it publishes each replay as its own track while it plays, like a camera, so viewers composing the scene see it, with each gap marked as a discontinuity.
  • Targets: the program (from the studio catalog's root renditions, ending at the catalog clock's now), a local source (its own track from #3, listed under dev.moq.studio.sources), or a broadcast source (the instance it plays, ending at the newest picture it showed).
  • Clips: moq_mux::container::mp4::Export over a take, written as a regular MP4 beside the scene file. Nothing is re-encoded, so a clip starts at the keyframe before its span.
  • Replay panel: what to replay, length (5, 10, 20, 30 s), speed (100, 50, 25%), which replay source, Replay, and Save clip.

Impact

  • Scene file: new source kind replay, with no fields.
  • New Replay panel, docked beside Filters.
  • Clips are written beside the scene file as <stem>-clip-<n>.mp4.
  • A replay source with --connect opens an encode session while it plays, counting toward the GPU's session cap like any captured source.
  • README: a Replay section, the panel, and the source kind.

Alternatives

  • Decode the source track directly from a time start. moq_video::decode::Consumer offers only Oldest/Latest, and reading lazily would lose groups that age past the track's 30 s window during a slow-motion replay. Copying into a take fixes both with public APIs and also gives the clip a finite broadcast to export. A Start::Time in moq-video would not remove the need for the take, so none is proposed.
  • A RAM frame buffer like OBS's replay buffer. Rejected by the quest: the groups are already held.
  • Replay settings in the scene file (source, length, speed on the replay source). Kept as panel state instead, so a replay source references no other source and needs none of the clone-style rename and cascade handling.

Choices made without asking

  • Viewer scrubbing ("Viewers can scrub back through the live broadcast as far as the relay or archive holds it") is left to moq's archive DVR quest, whose player surface is @moq/watch and which covers seeks inside the live cache too. The studio's part, tracks that keep their recent past, already exists. The quest is deleted rather than rewritten to that.
  • Lengths 5/10/20/30 s and speeds 100/50/25%; slow-motion replays are silent rather than time-stretched.
  • Replays need --connect, since nothing is encoded without it.
  • The Replay panel makes the take on the UI thread when you click, so replays apply in click order (measured: a 30 s take of 60 fps video takes 0.3 to 1.3 ms in a release build). Only a clip's MP4 export runs in the background.
  • Feed::replay refuses speeds below MIN_SPEED (1%), which keeps the replay's timing arithmetic in range and bounds how long a take is held. It also refuses replays to a replay source whose driver is gone, with the new Error::Stopped.
  • A replay frame at exactly the span's end is not shown (it would show for no time).
  • Clips go beside the scene file, numbered, never overwriting, and start at the keyframe before the span rather than trimming with an edit list, which moq_mux::container::mp4::Export does not offer.
  • Picked by the maintainer: a clip stops before the first frame shown after its end. With B-frames it loses the in-span pictures that refer to that frame, plus everything decoded after it, so it can end early: usually a fraction of a second, but as far back as the keyframe for a slow or deeply reordered source (I0 P8 B1..B7 at 1 fps keeps only I0). The README and the Save clip tooltip say so. Replays keep the references and stop showing at the end.

Follow-ups

  • Upstream (moq): a presentation window on moq-mux's mp4 Export, written as the edit list, so a clip shows exactly its span: from the start instead of the keyframe before it, and to the end even with B-frames. Then bump the pin here and use it.

  • Between replays a published replay track simply ends, so a composing viewer shows nothing there only once the layout track says the replay item is hidden; the layout track quest should cover a replay source.

  • Hotkeys for Replay and Save clip, once the studio has configurable hotkeys.

Checks

Local (macOS, Metal), on 9974622: just ci in full (pin check, quest check, actionlint, shellcheck, shfmt, taplo, nixfmt, biome, the join page build, cargo fmt --check, clippy with default features and with moq-scene/capture,moq-studio/capture,moq-studio/openh264, and 136 tests). On Linux (an x86_64 NixOS host), the moq-scene replay tests passed 20 times out of 20 at db4f620. On 35f60f6 the ignored engine::tests::the_program_reaches_a_relay passed on the local GPU and also saves a program clip. Not run: just render-sw (Linux Mesa).

CI on 57c1f6b failed source::tests::a_replay_plays_its_span_at_its_speed on Linux: the test saw the picture at 2.033 s where it expected 1.933 s, three frames late. Root cause: tokio's timer wheel rounds a deadline up to a whole millisecond. tokio::time::advance moved the paused clock to an exact microsecond due, between two ticks. From there, each sleep(Duration::ZERO) in the until helper was due at the next tick. Off Apple platforms the decoder runs on its own thread, and while it worked the idle runtime auto-advanced the clock one millisecond per loop. 49bcb76 moves the clock only with until_time, a sleep_until, which lands on a whole millisecond, so the clock never moves while until loops. The assertions are unchanged. Reproduced on macOS with a thread that sleeps 50 ms: after an advance of 1.5 ms the clock moved 23 s while until waited; after until_time it moved 0 ns. This PR also corrects the helper's doc comment, which blamed advance's yield.

CI on ce1add6 failed the same test differently: "cleared before 1500ms". This was a regression from 35f60f6, and it failed 5 times out of 5 on a NixOS host. 35f60f6 cleared the picture whenever a new replay arrived, even on an idle source whose picture was already clear. Off Apple platforms the decoder runs on its own thread, so the replay parks before its first picture and the test read the clear picture first. On macOS the decoder runs inline, and the first frame replaced the clear one within the same poll. db4f620 clears only when it cuts off a replay that is playing. The test is unchanged.

Review

Reviewer: Codex, gpt-6.1-sol, medium effort (quest review --base origin/main). A new session started after the design change, which is recorded in a PR comment. Round 6 reviewed head 997462259c831de2b5b16bc88e45b41532404364 and reported no findings.

Online findings on f48e7e9: all five CodeRabbit threads are fixed and resolved, with replies. The five findings of the earlier automated reviews are fixed, and a PR comment lists each one with its test. The ce1add6 automated finding on clip presentation is fixed with the maintainer's pick. The 5b04b13 finding, which said the 200 ms bound was false, is fixed by stating the real bound. Both have replies on the PR.

Review in Change Stack →

Walkthrough

The change adds replay takes from retained program or source media, playback through replay sources, and MP4 clip saving. The studio adds a Replay tab with controls for target, duration, speed, and destination. The README documents replay behavior and limitations, and the quest documentation removes the former replay quest.

Merge Risk: Low · up to f48e7

Replay has bounded edge cases: failed sources can report success, rendition changes can yield empty takes, published gaps can retain old pictures, and overlapping requests can restore an older replay. These warrant fixes or explicit follow-up, but the established impact is localized.

I found three actionable issues:

  1. [P2] Bound the subscription setup as well as the copy — In rs/moq-scene/src/replay.rs:151, subscribe(...).await waits for track info before the no-op polling starts. For example, a broadcast can show video while its catalog still advertises an audio track whose publisher never answers; the video copy succeeds and then the audio subscription waits indefinitely. Both Replay and Save clip remain pending instead of returning the readable media or a useful error. Bound or nonblock this setup too, and test an advertised track that never supplies info.

  2. [P2] Clear the old image when replacing a replay — In rs/moq-scene/src/source.rs:627-633, replacing playing drops the old future without clearing its last picture. If the new take has no immediately readable video or its first picture is later than the span start, the previous replay remains visible during that interval, potentially for the whole new replay. Clear the mailbox on replacement and test a replacement with a leading empty interval.

  3. [P2] Propagate gaps to the published replay source — In rs/moq-scene/src/source.rs:705-710, a gap clears only the local picture; the separately published track remains open without a clear or gap signal. A viewer composing that source continues showing the preceding frame until another frame arrives, while the local program shows transparency. Propagate the gap/clear state through the published representation and cover a mid-replay gap with a composing receiver.

Verification: GitHub-only static review of the base-aware diff and surrounding code; I did not run tests or exercise a relay/GPU. The PR reports local checks passed. The previously reported keyframe lead-in is documented as an accepted tradeoff.

  • [P2] Drain ready groups without assuming arrival order (rs/moq-scene/src/replay.rs:181–200). poll_recv_group returns arrival order even when the subscription requests ascending delivery. If a later group's readable frame is beyond end, past = true ends the entire scan while an earlier in-range group is already ready behind it. The take and saved clip silently omit readable media. Drain all currently ready groups and establish the output start from their sequence bounds, rather than using the first arrival as proof that earlier media is absent; cover out-of-order arrivals with a later group encountered first.
  • [P2] Preserve in-range reordered frames and their references (rs/moq-scene/src/replay.rs:193–201). Frames within a video group are in decode order, not necessarily presentation order. For I0, P120, B40, B80 with an end at 60 ms, stopping on P120 discards B40, which is in the requested span and may need that reference to decode. Preserve the required decode-order lead-out while restricting what is displayed or exported to the requested end, and test a reordered GOP crossing the end.

The earlier three findings on subscription setup, replacement-picture clearing, and published gap propagation remain unaddressed. Static GitHub-only review; I did not run the replay, GPU, or relay tests.

The paused-clock test now waits on the intended deadline rather than yielding through advance, and the effects merge preserves the replay source's existing behavior. No additional actionable finding in this update.

The five previously reported issues remain: unbounded track-info setup, stale picture on replay replacement, missing published gap propagation, the arrival-order group scan, and decode-order frames crossing the end. See the earlier reviews for their reproductions and suggested directions.

Verification: static GitHub-only inspection; I did not run the replay, GPU, clock, or relay tests.

609-614: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚖️ Poor tradeoff

Read a replay picture in a_replay_is_published_as_it_plays.

The test discards the consumer (_consumer). It waits for a rendition and asserts Status::Live. It never reads a frame from the replay track. A replay that lists a rendition and reports Live, but writes no pictures, still passes. Keep the consumer, subscribe to the listed video rendition, and assert that one picture arrives before the test ends. Under paused test time, the read may need the same coordination the PR uses for MoQ Video's worker threads.

Check which frames the saved clip holds against the requested span.

a_clip_saves_its_span reads no frames from the saved file. Every fixture frame has the same gray value, and the assertions check only the file name, the earlier clip, and MP4 repair status. If save passes a different one-second window to Take::new, the output still has the expected name and the test still passes. Duration checks cannot detect this, because a shifted window has the same length.

Give each fixture frame a distinguishable value, for example one derived from its index. Decode the saved file and check which frames it contains:

  • The clip must reach the frames at the requested span end, with a tolerance of one frame interval.
  • The clip may start at the keyframe before the span start, so do not require an exact start.

The start alone cannot distinguish the intended window from one that begins at a keyframe and ends earlier. In this fixture, the span is 1.5 s to 2.5 s, and the keyframe at 1.0 s precedes 1.5 s. The end check is required.

A take now never waits on a publisher, even for a track's description, so
it is made at the click on the UI thread and replays apply in click order.
It reads every ready group and orders them itself, since a session hands
them over in arrival order, and keeps a group's frames through the last
one inside the span, so a B-frame there keeps its reference.

A replay source clears the old replay's picture when a new one starts,
marks gaps on its published track with a discontinuity, refuses speeds
below 1% and replays once its driver is gone, and a broadcast source
forgets its newest picture when its video rendition changes.

The watch kept the last replay's take after it played, holding up to a
span of media for as long as the source lived. The driver now takes it out.

A replay's sound channel closed as soon as its track ran out, dropping
what the bus had not played yet; it now stays open until the replay ends,
and a failure of either half still ends the replay at once.

Design change: moq_scene::replay::Take::new is now synchronous, and the Replay panel makes the take on the UI thread when you click.

  • Why: the copy already polled groups and frames once with a no-op waiter. The only await left was subscribe(...).await, which waits for the track's info, and nothing bounds that wait (a held Subscribing counts as demand). So an advertised track whose publisher never answers hung Replay and Save clip. Spawning one task per click also let an older take land after a newer one.
  • Now: the subscription is polled once too. A rendition its publisher has not described yet is left out of the take, and a take with neither rendition is refused. Replays apply in click order without sequence numbers. Only the MP4 export of a clip is still spawned, and replay::save takes a Take.
  • Cost: a 30 s take of 60 fps video, measured in a release build, takes 0.3 to 1.3 ms on the UI thread.

The review count restarts with quest review --new.

How the five findings from the automated reviews of 7bd314b, 57c1f6b and f48e7e9 were handled. All five are fixed in 35f60f6:

  1. Bound the subscription setup. Take::new polls the subscription once with a no-op waiter. A track whose info is not there yet is left out, and a take with no rendition left is refused. See the design-change comment above. Test: replay::tests::a_take_leaves_out_what_is_not_described, which uses a Requests handler that never answers and runs outside any runtime.
  2. Clear the old picture on replacement. The replay driver clears the mailbox as it swaps in a new replay. Test: source::tests::a_new_replay_clears_the_one_playing, which hangs without the fix.
  3. Propagate gaps to the published replay. At a gap or end, the replay marks a discontinuity on its published track. Test: publish::tests::a_replay_is_published_as_it_plays, which reads the break through moq_mux::container::Consumer.
  4. Arrival order. You were right that poll_recv_group walks cached groups in arrival order whatever Order says (moq/rs/moq-net/src/model/track.rs around 7773). The copy now reads every ready group into a BTreeMap by sequence and writes them in order. It no longer stops at the first frame past the end, and it sets start_at to the lowest sequence. Test: replay::tests::a_take_orders_its_groups.
  5. Decode-order frames crossing the end. Each group keeps its frames through the last one presented inside the span. A later-presented reference that a B-frame inside the span needs is kept, and playback still stops showing at the end. Test: replay::tests::a_take_keeps_the_references_of_its_last_pictures, with I4000 P4400 B4133 B4266 and an end of 4200.

Reviewed head: ce1add6, following f48e7e9.

The nonblocking subscription, replacement clear, published discontinuity, and sequence-ordered group copy address the earlier findings. The decode-order fix also retains in-range B-frames and their references, but one part of that finding remains:

P2: Keep post-end references from being presented in a saved clip (rs/moq-scene/src/replay.rs:229–238; rs/moq-studio/src/replay.rs:91–107). For the new test's I4000, P4400, B4133 and a 4200 ms end, copy_held correctly retains P4400 so B4133 can decode. Replay display stops at the requested end, but save gives the entire take to the MP4 exporter without a presentation bound; its timeline indexes every sample, including P4400. The saved clip can therefore show footage after the requested end and run longer than the selection. Preserve the reference for decoding while limiting the exported presentation to the take's end, and test the resulting clip's presentation timeline, not only the copied frame list.

Verification: static GitHub-only review of the update and pinned MP4 exporter; I did not run replay, export, GPU, or relay tests.

(Written by review (OpenAI))

Clearing on every new replay put a clear picture in the mailbox ahead of
the new replay's first, which a reader could take before that picture
when decoding runs on its own thread, as it does off Apple platforms.
Between replays the picture is already clear.

On the ce1add6 P2, "Keep post-end references from being presented in a saved clip":

Confirmed. copy_held keeps a reference presented after the end (P4400 in I4000 P4400 B4133 with a 4200 end), and the clip presents it.

The pinned moq_mux::container::mp4::Export cannot bound what a clip presents. It has no presentation-window option: Timeline::new in moq/rs/moq-mux/src/container/mp4.rs sets each track's presented duration to its latest sample's end, and edits writes the edit list from that. The studio cannot set either.

This is left for the maintainer, with three options:

  1. Upstream, exact (recommended as a follow-up): add a presentation window to moq-mux's mp4 Export that writes it into the edit list. Land it in moq with a test, then bump the pin here in its own PR. That trims both ends exactly, so a clip would also stop presenting the keyframe lead-in before its start, which today is a documented trade-off.
  2. Narrowest now, in the studio: cut the clip's copy at the first frame in decode order that is presented after the end. Every frame kept then has its references, and nothing after the end is shown. The cost: with B-frames, the clip can end up to one reorder depth (about 100 to 200 ms) before the selection, because the B-frames that would need the cut reference are dropped too. The replay keeps today's cut, since playback already stops showing at the end.
  3. Document it, like the start: a lossless clip may present, after its end, the few frames its last pictures reference.

Only video with B-frames is affected. moq-video turns frame reordering off wherever its backend allows, and V4L2 leaves it to the driver, so the studio's own encodes rarely have B-frames. In practice this mostly means broadcast sources.

The update avoids issuing a redundant clear when an idle replay starts, while still clearing a replay that is replaced. The idle path already clears on initialization and completion. I found no new actionable issue in this change.

The previously reported post-end reference in saved clips remains; the author confirmed it and recorded the options for a maintainer decision in the discussion.

Verification: static GitHub-only inspection; I did not run quest context, replay, export, GPU or UI tests. The reported Linux test results are author-reported.

With B-frames, a take keeps a frame shown after its end when a frame
inside the span refers to it, and an MP4 export shows every frame it
holds. A clip now stops each group before its first frame shown after the
end, so it may end a few pictures early. Replays keep the references and
stop showing at the end themselves.

On the ce1add6 P2, "Keep post-end references from being presented in a saved clip": fixed in 5b04b13 with option 2, which the maintainer picked.

  • Clips: Save clip now copies with Take::clip. Each group stops before its first frame (in decode order) that is shown after the end, so the MP4 export holds nothing presented past it. With B-frames, a clip may end a few pictures (up to about 200 ms) early. The README says so.
  • Replays: unchanged. Take::new keeps the references and stops showing at the end.
  • Test of the clip's timeline: replay::tests::a_clip_saves_its_span in moq-studio encodes with openh264 and restamps each second into B-frame decode order (I0 P2 B1 ...). It saves a clip ending at 2.45 s and reads the moov back with mp4-atom. It asserts the clip shows from the 1 s keyframe to no later than 2.45 s. With the previous cut it shows until 2.5 s and fails.
  • Follow-up: an exact trim of both ends needs a presentation window on moq-mux's mp4 Export. That is listed in the PR body as an upstream follow-up.

The earlier after-end reference-picture finding is addressed for clip samples: saving now stops before the first picture whose presentation timestamp is past the end, while replay keeps the references it needs.

P2: Do not promise a 200 ms maximum for the shortened tail (rs/moq-scene/src/replay.rs:261–267, README.md:414–416). The new cut discards every later-decoded picture in the group after the first out-of-range reference, not just a fixed amount of time. For a supported broadcast source at 1 fps with decode order I0, P8, B1 ... B7 and an end at 7 s, it keeps only I0, so the clip can end several seconds early, rather than the documented roughly 200 ms. Bound the loss for the input actually supported, or describe the potentially much larger truncation and expose it to the user; add a low-rate/deep-reordering case.

Verification: static GitHub-only inspection; I did not run the replay, encoder or MP4 playback tests.

A clip loses every picture decoded after its first frame shown past the
end, which a slow or deeply reordered source can take back to the keyframe,
so the 200 ms bound did not hold. The README, the Save clip tooltip, and
the take's docs now say so, and a test covers a one-picture-a-second source
decoded I0 P8 B1 ... B7.

On the 5b04b13 P2, "Do not promise a 200 ms maximum for the shortened tail": agreed, and the 200 ms bound is gone.

Fixing it at the source isn't possible here. In your example (I0 P8 B1..B7, end 7 s), every in-range B-picture refers to P8. Without presenting P8, no lossless cut keeps more than I0. More generally, the container doesn't record which pictures reference which, so a narrower cut would mean parsing H.264/H.265 slices in the studio, and it still couldn't help this case. The maintainer's "cut early" stands, now with a true bound:

  • README: with B-frames, a clip leaves out the pictures shown before the end that refer to one shown after it, plus everything decoded after that one. That is usually a fraction of a second, but for a slow or deeply reordered source it can reach back as far as the keyframe.
  • Save clip tooltip in the Replay panel: a clip is copied without re-encoding, starts at the keyframe before the moments, and with B-frames can end early.
  • Take docs in moq-scene state the same bound.
  • Test: replay::tests::a_clip_can_end_back_at_its_keyframe uses your case at 1 fps. A clip to 7.5 s holds only I0, and a replay take holds all nine frames.

The moq-mux presentation-window follow-up in the PR body would remove this trade-off, since an edit list can hide P8 while keeping it for decoding.

The earlier misleading 200 ms clip-tail bound is addressed: the README explains that deeply reordered or slow sources can lose back to the keyframe, the Save clip tooltip warns of early endings, and the new slow-source regression covers that case. I found no new actionable issue in this update.

Brings in instant replay (#20). Both source kinds join the scene file,
the add form, and the README, and a browser source has sound beside
the replay source.

A replay copies what is published, and a web page publishes no track
of its own, so it has no past to replay: the Replay panel leaves pages
and their clones out, as it does images and colors, and replaying one
by name says why. The program replays them as viewers saw them.

Brings in #20 (instant replay and clips). The program's catalog and
clock, which a replay reads, live on the program's broadcast beside the
recorder rather than on the relay output; replays still need --connect.
