chore(moq): pin moq fd07f5b for the audio capture split and mix router - #27
Advances the moq gitlink to moq-dev/moq main at fd07f5b (184 commits past 96244dd) with just upgrade-moq, and adapts the studio to what it breaks. Behavior is kept; nothing new is built on the new APIs.
Completes both pin quests, since both checks pass with one bump to moq main (their upstream quests, quest/m1/audio-capture-fanout.md and quest/m1/audio-mix-router.md, are gone from it):
quest/m0/pin-audio-capture.md (claimed by this PR)
quest/m0/pin-audio-mix-router.md (quest start claims one quest per PR, so it is covered here without its own claim)
Changes
Audio capture: a microphone or system-audio source opens one capture::Producer and feeds a consumer of it to the bus (Bus::capture), driving both. Replaces the removed bus::Capture that opened the device itself. A device that defaults to more than two channels now opens as Layout::Discrete, which the stereo bus refuses where the old capture guessed a surround layout. So it is asked for stereo, then mono, at its default rate.
Program mix: Bus::new now returns a Driver, and sources reach no output until routed into a Mix. The engine makes one program Mix; each source with sound is routed into it when opened and unrouted when its driver stops (impl Drop for Driver), so removed or edited sources, including guests that come and go, leave nothing behind in the mix. The audio thread advances the Driver on the program clock and encodes the program mix's blocks, stamped from each block's position. The Audio panel's program meter reads Mix::level.
Epochs are instances: moq_net::Epoch and Route::with_epoch became Instance and Route::with_instance(instance, epoch). The program announces one Instance::random() at epoch 0 (as upstream's own callers migrated), the Health observer and viewer-report reader carry the instance, and --failover checks has_instance(). Probe and test announcements drop their explicit epoch, since every announcement now mints its own instance.
Quests: deletes both pin quests and their links, and updates the prose in compose/sources.md, mixes.md, and audio-stall.md that described the pins as pending.
Choices made without asking
Failover source selection changed upstream. moq now ranks the preferred link before anything else among different instances (moq doc/concept/identity.md, "Choosing a route"). The studio ranks the first relay highest, so a guest restarted behind only the failover now replaces the first relay's lingering copy once that copy ends, not at once as before. Keeping the first-relay preference seemed right: dropping it would also lose the primary preference within one instance. The comment in connect, the failover test (now every_relay_routes_one_instance), and the README are updated to match.
A capture that stops is an error. Upstream's capture::Producer::run reports a stopped stream as audio capture stream stopped where the old bus capture returned Ok, so the source's Failed reason now says that instead of "the source ended".
Live after open. A capture source turns Live once its device opens, not before, since the producer opens the device before the bus channel exists.
Checks
just ci (lint including the capture/openh264/cef clippy, and 145 tests including replay) passes on d1682da (146 tests).
every_relay_routes_one_instance waits for the failover's newer instance to reach the studio and asserts the first relay's still wins. It fails with the failover's preference at 0.
sync_restarts_only_what_changed now also asserts a source is routed into the program while it runs and unrouted once removed; it fails with the unroute disabled.
Decisions
Multichannel devices the stereo bus can't take. The local reviewer (rounds 3 to 5) and the OpenAI review kept these: a device with stereo or mono only at a non-default rate, or with no stereo or mono format at all (such as a 4-input interface), fails. Before the bump, the studio played the latter by guessing quad speaker positions, which moq-audio now refuses on purpose. The studio cannot see a device's formats, and selecting or mixing discrete inputs is moq-audio's job (AGENTS.md "Upstream"). ✅ Maintainer picked (2026-11-04): merge as is and plan a moq-audio quest for discrete-input selection or mapping and channel-and-rate negotiation. Rejected: the studio taking inputs 1-2 as stereo, and holding the bump.
Suggested follow-ups
Upstream moq-audio: discrete-input selection or mapping, and capture negotiation that picks a bus-mixable channel and rate pair, as above. #21 adopts moq_video::encode::Producer::demand() and keyframe-on-join, and the open PRs (#16, #18, #20, #8, #23, #21) need to merge this bump.
Review
Reviewer: Codex, gpt-6.1-sol, medium effort (quest review).
Round 1 on 41fd483: one low finding, README still promised a restarted publisher behind the failover replaces the first relay's copy at once, and the Watching bullet named the newer instance. Fixed in 306559a.
Round 3 on 9b40167 (after merging main and fixing the online findings): one medium finding. A device with stereo only at a non-default rate still fails. Refuted for this PR: the studio can't see device formats (moq/rs/moq-audio/src/capture.rs:516-534), and capture belongs upstream per AGENTS.md.
Round 4 on 9b40167: the reviewer kept that finding, so it is listed under Decisions needed. This is the fourth-round checkpoint. The approach stands: the bump is otherwise complete, and the remaining gap is upstream work.
Advances the moq gitlink to main and adapts to what it breaks: audio
captures open a capture::Producer that feeds the bus, every source with
sound is routed into the program bus::Mix while it runs, the audio thread
advances the bus Driver, and publisher epochs are now route instances.

One audio capture feeding the bus and an encoder is pinned
chore(moq): pin moq fd07f5b for the audio capture split and mix router
Nov 4, 2026
P2: Preserve capture from multichannel input devices (rs/moq-scene/src/source.rs:415–419). With config.channels unset, a microphone can open in its default 3–8-channel format. The newly pinned capture::Producer labels every input above two channels Discrete(N); bus.capture then tries to remix that into the stereo program bus and rejects it because those channels have no speaker positions. The source fails before becoming Live and contributes no audio. Previously the bus capture path used Layout::from_channels and could downmix these channel counts. Arrange an explicit, supported channel selection or mapping through the upstream capture/mix API, and test a multichannel default device; do not infer speaker positions for an arbitrary microphone array.
Verification: GitHub-only static inspection of the studio migration and pinned capture, bus and remix code. I could not run quest context, builds, relay tests or hardware capture tests.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Important
One previously reported P2 remains at the head: capture sources fail on input devices whose default layout has more than two channels. The rest of the migration is consistent with the pinned moq APIs.
Reviewed changes
Audio capture: one capture::Producer now feeds Bus::capture, with the producer and bus channel driven together; the source becomes Live only after the device opens.
Program mix: sources route their Strip into the program Mix when opened and unroute it from Driver::Drop; the engine advances the mixer on the program clock and publishes each block using its position.
Instances: Epoch/with_epoch/has_epoch became Instance/with_instance/has_instance, including the program announcement, health observer, failover check, probes, and tests.
Quests/docs: both audio pins are deleted with their links, and the surrounding prose now describes the pinned behavior.

Walkthrough
Audio capture now feeds a shared bus, while audio sources route into a separate program mix that the studio advances and publishes. Broadcast announcements and health observation now use instances instead of epochs. Relay selection retains the first route while it is available and switches to failover when that route ends. The documentation and quest plans reflect these changes, and the moq subproject reference changed.
Merge Risk: Low · previous review dbd97
Mergeable with bounded follow-up: some multichannel devices still cannot supply audio when their stereo or mono formats require another sample rate. Relay-selection validation and concurrent probe concerns remain unresolved, without demonstrated serious production impact.

Use a unique probe path for each concurrent measure call.
Two probes that publish the same path through one relay compete for one route. The subscriber can receive the other probe's groups, so this probe may time out or report an estimate from its own unpulled connection. Make the probe path unique per call, for example by adding a random suffix in measure.

The new first-relay selection rule may not be implemented by the broadcast-source consumer. The supplied integration test switches to a newer failover instance only after dropping the first publication, so it would also pass if the consumer still chose the newest instance.
The source could switch to failover immediately instead of playing through the first relay as the user guide promises.
This can occur when: Both relays simultaneously advertise the same source path, with an older instance on the first relay and a newer one on failover.

Ensure the broadcast-source consumer prioritizes the first relay whenever it has
a route to the source, even when the failover advertises a newer instance;
switch to failover only when the first relay no longer has a route. Add or
update an integration test where both relays advertise the same path with older
and newer instances, verifying this selection behavior.
Check the selected instance before dropping the first route.
every_relay_routes_one_instance publishes newer and then drops first without checking which instance is selected in between. routed_at returns on any Start, Update, Restart, or Takeover event for newer. A takeover that happens before drop(first) therefore still passes. The test comment says the takeover happens only after the first route ends. Nothing in the test checks that.
Add an assertion between the publish call and drop(first) that older is still the selected instance. This needs a read of the current selection that does not wait for a new event. routed_at is unsuitable here because it waits for an event for older, and that event has already been consumed.

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
The new moq revision replaces bus::Capture with capture::Producer; a feature-gated or separately built consumer may still depend on bus::Capture.
That build fails to compile.
This can occur when: A build enables a consumer that was not covered by the reported just ci run and still references the removed API.

ℹ️ No new issues from the merge of main; the branch's audio migration and the merged rendition work compose cleanly. The capture-layout concern from the previous review is unchanged by this merge and still applies at this head.
Reviewed changes
Merged main (1c485f6, #16) — brings scene rename/reorder, an editable fade time, and live canvas resize, where a new size or frame rate ends the current rendition and lists a new one.
Reconciled the merge with this branch — the program Mix, per-source routing with unroute on Driver::Drop, Instance identity, and the split fail_audio/fail_video reporting all survive alongside Stats becoming shared and Renditions/Rendition replacing the single encoder.
Re-checked the audio/video seams — run_audio still derives timestamps from the one program epoch and the bus block's position, and the catalog reservation ordering still lists video and audio before the first catalog, so a resize does not desync the program audio.
…relay holds
A capture device that defaults to more than two channels opens as a
discrete layout the stereo bus refuses, so ask it for stereo, then mono.
The failover test now checks the first relay's instance holds while the
failover routes a newer one.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Multichannel capture (pullfrog, review (OpenAI)): fixed in 9b40167. A device that opens with more than two channels is asked for stereo, then mono, and no speaker positions are assumed. A device offering stereo or mono only at a sample rate other than its default still fails loudly, listing its formats. That case needs moq-audio's capture negotiation to choose a channel and rate pair, so it is an upstream follow-up, not a studio guess.
README first-relay rule (CodeRabbit): fixed in 9b40167. every_relay_routes_one_instance now waits until the failover's newer instance of show has reached the studio. It does this with a marker broadcast announced after the restart on the same announce stream. It then asserts that the studio never switched to the newer instance while the first relay still had its route. With the failover's preference set to 0 instead of -1, the test fails (3/3 runs).
Unique probe path (CodeRabbit, uplink.rs:50): not changed. This PR only drops the explicit with_epoch(Epoch::mint()). Every announcement now mints its own instance (moq-net Route::instance), so each probe still announces a fresh stream, as before. The path itself is unchanged and outside this bump.
The previous multichannel-capture finding is partially addressed: devices whose multichannel default also offers stereo or mono now reopen in a layout the bus accepts.
P2: Keep multichannel-only capture devices usable (rs/moq-scene/src/source.rs:663–678). A device that exposes only its multichannel format still fails both reopen attempts, even though it worked before the pin. The new helper explicitly returns the unsupported error in that case, so such an input never reaches Live or the program. Provide an explicit channel-selection or mapping path for discrete input, or preserve the old supported behavior with a documented choice; do not guess speaker positions for an arbitrary microphone array. Cover a multichannel-only device or a mocked capture backend as well as the stereo/mono fallback.
Verification: GitHub-only static inspection of the capture helper and pinned upstream configuration/error semantics; I did not test real devices, run capture tests, or verify the failover test at runtime.

Caution
The head does not build. Merging main (1bc0394, #20) carried the new replay/clip code, which still calls the moq APIs this pin bumps away, so just check fails and just ci never reaches the tests.
Reviewed changes
Synced main (1bc0394, #20) — instant replay and clips arrive through the merge; the branch's program Mix, per-source routing, Instance identity, and program-mix run_audio survive the resolution intact.
Stereo-then-mono capture fallback — a capture source that opens above stereo is reopened asking for stereo, then mono, and otherwise fails listing the formats the device offers.
Failover test hardened — every_relay_routes_one_instance now waits for the restarted instance to reach the failover relay, publishes a marker behind it, then asserts the first relay's route is not taken over before it ends.
🚨 The merge of main leaves #20's replay code on the old moq API
The branch's own commits pass just ci, but the merge commit is red: #20's replay and clip code was written against the pre-bump moq and was not migrated, so moq-scene does not compile. Since Check is just check followed by just test, nothing was tested at this head either.
Technical details
# Migrate #20's replay code to the bumped moq API## Affected sites-`rs/moq-scene/src/source.rs:823` — `const REPLAY: moq_mux::container::Delay = moq_mux::container::Delay { ... }`; `moq_mux::container::Delay` no longer exists at `fd07f5b`.
-`rs/moq-scene/src/replay.rs:205` — `Subscription::default().with_ranges([range]).with_max_delay(None)`.
-`rs/moq-scene/src/replay.rs:365` — `Subscription::default().with_max_delay(None)`.
-`rs/moq-scene/src/publish.rs:659` — `Subscription::default().with_max_delay(None)`.
## Required outcome-`just ci` passes at the new merge head, with the replay/clip behavior unchanged: a take reads every group it holds, never skipping one as stale.
## Suggested approach (optional)-`Delay` moved to `moq_net::track::Delay` (re-exported from `model/track.rs`) with `min: Option<Duration>` and `max: Option<Duration>`. The exact translation of `with_max_delay(None)` is `with_delay(Delay { min: Some(Duration::ZERO), max: None })`, or `subscription.delay.max = None`; note `Delay::default()` is `{ min: Some(0), max: Some(0) }`, which would cap staleness at zero instead.
-`REPLAY` becomes `moq_net::track::Delay { min: Some(Duration::ZERO), max: None }` (`moq_video::decode::Options.delay` and `moq_audio::decode::Options.delay` are that type now).
- These edits add `replay.rs` and `publish.rs` to this PR's diff. Rerun `just ci` afterwards, since the new failover test has not run at this head.
Instant replay, merged from main, still used moq_mux::container::Delay and
Subscription::with_max_delay, which the pinned moq replaced with
moq_net::track::Delay.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Multichannel-only devices (review (OpenAI), 9b40167): not changed here; it's listed under Decisions needed. The old capture worked on a 4-input device by treating its inputs as quad speakers, which is the guess upstream moq-audio now refuses on purpose ("A stereo bus refuses those inputs instead of guessing a surround downmix", moq-audio MIGRATE.md). Choosing or mixing discrete inputs is audio capture and mixing work, which AGENTS.md "Upstream" places in moq-audio. The studio fails such a device loudly, listing its formats. My recommendation is a moq-audio follow-up covering discrete-input selection or mapping and channel-and-rate negotiation, then a pin bump.

The replay integration now uses the pinned track::Delay API, addressing the intervening build finding while retaining zero minimum and unlimited maximum delay for history. Browser-source integration routes its audio strip into the program mix. The previously reported multichannel-only limitation remains under the maintainer's recorded decision to merge as is and pursue upstream negotiation. The prior build break is fixed: the REPLAY const and the replay/drain test subscriptions now use moq_net::track::Delay and Subscription::with_delay(Delay::default().with_max(None)), preserving "no staleness cap, from the first group".
#8's browser test now adapts to Bus::new -> (Bus, Driver), keeping the Driver and calling mixer.advance(480) so the page's Strip::level is metered.
#23 is merged and the upstream Instance identity is adopted (Route::with_instance, Lite::has_instance, Observer::new(path, instance)), including the new drain path and its try_next() assertions.
The program audio Mix is renamed to Engine::mix because #23 took Engine::program for the program clock thread; run_audio, the UI meter, and the test context all follow the rename.
Merge resolutions preserve the audio routing (open routes, Driver::Drop unroutes), the capture reopen fallback, and all of main's #8/#23 work; no conflict markers or dropped main changes.
CI is green at this head: Check (just check + just test) passed in 8m14s and Quest passed.
The known multichannel capture / rate-negotiation gap remains the accepted upstream moq-audio follow-up and is not re-raised.

Brings in #27 (moq fd07f5b). The program audio thread advances the bus
and publishes the program Mix, which the recording reads from the
broadcast as before; the program's broadcast announces under an
Instance rather than an Epoch, live or not.

capture::Producerand feeds a consumer of it to the bus (Bus::capture), driving both. Replaces the removedbus::Capturethat opened the device itself. A device that defaults to more than two channels now opens asLayout::Discrete, which the stereo bus refuses where the old capture guessed a surround layout. So it is asked for stereo, then mono, at its default rate.Bus::newnow returns aDriver, and sources reach no output until routed into aMix. The engine makes one programMix; each source with sound is routed into it when opened and unrouted when its driver stops (impl Drop for Driver), so removed or edited sources, including guests that come and go, leave nothing behind in the mix. The audio thread advances theDriveron the program clock and encodes the program mix's blocks, stamped from each block's position. The Audio panel's program meter readsMix::level.moq_net::EpochandRoute::with_epochbecameInstanceandRoute::with_instance(instance, epoch). The program announces oneInstance::random()at epoch 0 (as upstream's own callers migrated), the Health observer and viewer-report reader carry the instance, and--failovercheckshas_instance(). Probe and test announcements drop their explicit epoch, since every announcement now mints its own instance.moq_net::track::Delay(maxNone, as before) instead ofmoq_mux::container::Delay,Subscription::with_max_delay, andSubscription::max_delay. feat(scene): browser sources through a CEF helper process #8's browser test advances the busDriverto meter the page's strip. The engine's program audio mix isEngine::mix, since fix(studio): drain the program encoder before a pause, a resize, and at exit #23 tookEngine::programfor the program clock's thread.compose/sources.md,mixes.md, andaudio-stall.mdthat described the pins as pending.Choices made without asking
doc/concept/identity.md, "Choosing a route"). The studio ranks the first relay highest, so a guest restarted behind only the failover now replaces the first relay's lingering copy once that copy ends, not at once as before. Keeping the first-relay preference seemed right: dropping it would also lose the primary preference within one instance. The comment inconnect, the failover test (nowevery_relay_routes_one_instance), and the README are updated to match.capture::Producer::runreports a stopped stream asaudio capture stream stoppedwhere the old bus capture returnedOk, so the source's Failed reason now says that instead of "the source ended".Checks
