feat(studio): record the program, and optionally each source, to MP4 - #18
Recording: the studio records the program to disk, and optionally each source as its own isolated file, whether or not it is live, starting and stopping without touching live outputs. Today the program is encoded only with --connect, and nothing writes a file.
Approach
The broadcast is always built. The program's broadcast (catalog, program video and audio, and each source's track from #3) now lives on the studio's own origin whether or not a relay is connected; --connect, and --failover beside it, publish that origin, each relay's connection opened as before. Without a relay, a canvas the machine cannot encode no longer fails startup: the studio composes, previews, and records audio, the Output panel says why the video stopped, and a new canvas tries again (as a live resize to an unencodable canvas already does since #16).
A recording is a local subscriber.rs/moq-studio/src/record.rs reads the broadcast with moq-mux's crash-safe mp4::Export (moq-cli's subscribe --format mp4 path), so a recording shares the live encoders and never restarts or keyframes them. This is the shape the destinations quest plans for its egress library ("remuxes its own broadcast"). No moq change.
Demand. The program video encodes while live and not --on-demand, otherwise only while watched or recorded. Without a relay, source tracks encode only while subscribed too (Publish::on_demand, which drops the encoder between subscribers and marks the gap), so an offline studio encodes no video until it records.
Each source too. The checkbox gives every source listed under dev.moq.studio.sources with video or audio a file of its own, read through a Stream that narrows the studio catalog to that source's nested catalog. A source added mid-recording starts its file then; one removed finishes it; one whose track is replaced (a capture that changes size or color space moves to a new track) finishes it and goes on in a numbered file; one whose file failed, or could not be created, is not retried until it leaves the catalog and is listed again. Stills (binary tracks only) and broadcast sources, guests included, get none.
Program rollover. Since #16, a new canvas size or frame rate retires the program's video rendition and lists a new track. The program's file is read through the same catalog Stream as a source's (narrowed to the root's media with Catalog::media), so it ends there, keeping the old video to its end, and the program goes on in ... (2).mp4 with the new rendition, which joins once its encoder opens. Without it, the new rendition would land in the same MP4 as a second video track players skip, and the file would silently stop showing video. Rollover works with or without each source too.
Files.<scene stem> <UTC start>.mp4 and <scene stem> <UTC start> <source>.mp4 in --recordings (default: the scene file's directory), numbered rather than overwritten. A file plays while it grows and becomes a regular MP4 (ftyp, mdat, moov) on stop or quit; quitting waits for that. A file nothing was written to is removed.
Impact
New Output panel controls: Start recording / Stop recording, an each source too checkbox, elapsed time, and each file's size and outcome.
New flag --recordings <dir>.
Without --connect, the studio now builds the program broadcast and encodes Opus audio continuously (cheap), and encodes program and source video only while recording. It used to encode nothing.
--on-demand now also counts a recording as demand; its help says so.
README: new Recording section; Output panel row and flag list updated.
Works beside #19 (both relays publish the one origin a recording reads), #10 (guests are broadcast sources, so no file of their own), #17 (source files hold the capture before any filter, as the tracks do), #24 (a reload is a canvas change like any other), #16 (a live canvas change rolls the program over to a numbered file), #25 (source Health reads the same tracks a source file records), #20 (the catalog and clock a replay reads moved from the relay Output to the always-built Program; replays still need --connect), #8 (a browser source publishes no track, so no file of its own), and #23 (an on-demand source drains its Encoding with a discontinuity between subscribers; quitting closes a recording, which then reads the program until Engine::stop ends its tracks, so the file keeps what the encoders drain on the way out, rolls over into no other file, and ends the source files with it; Engine::stop now ends the program audio track too), and #27 (the program audio the recording reads is the bus's program Mix, published as before; Epoch became Instance).
Choices made without asking
Local subscriber over a second encoder output. A recording's subscription is demand on the same tracks the relay reads, so while connected the bandwidth allocator funds the program's bitrate for a recording nobody watches on the relay (it probes for it), and the Health panel treats the uplink as watched. Feeding a separate recording broadcast from the one encoder would avoid that, but needs a second Opus encoder (moq-audio's Producer cannot publish pre-encoded packets) and would diverge from the egress design. Suggested moq follow-up below.
Pre-roll.MAX_DELAY is 2 s: moq-mux's consumer starts at the oldest group within the skip budget, so a recording begins with up to 2 s from before the click, and only a disk stalled over 2 s loses media. A moq-mux start option independent of the skip budget would make the start exact.
Names. UTC timestamps (the studio reads no time zone), colons replaced for Windows; source names sanitized to letters, digits, and -_.(). The scene stem (leaving each source at least 64 bytes), then the source name, are cut between characters so every name, with the largest (N) and .mp4, fits in 255 bytes (CodeRabbit thread).
One file per source, rather than extra tracks in the program's MP4, since editors and players handle several video tracks in one MP4 poorly.
Rollover overlap. A file that goes on in the next, the program's or a source's, starts the next with up to MAX_DELAY (2 s) of the tracks that carry on, such as the program audio, so the end repeats rather than being lost. Exact handover needs the moq-mux live-edge start below; the README says so.
Unencodable canvas offline. Records audio while the Output panel shows the video error, rather than refusing to record, matching a live resize to an unencodable canvas.
Alternatives
moq-archive instead of MP4. ✅ 2026-11-03 (maintainer): keep MP4 through moq-mux for now; moving recordings to moq-archive is a later quest.
Encoder fan-out (one encoder publishing into a live broadcast and a separate recording broadcast): isolates demand, but doubles Opus encoding and forces a keyframe or a wait at each start.
Fail startup offline when the canvas cannot be encoded: simpler, but breaks editing scenes on a machine with no encoder.
One MP4 across a program resize: the new rendition becomes a second video track that players skip.
Follow-ups
moq: a bandwidth reservation counts demand from local subscribers, so a local recording makes the relay connection probe for media it does not send. Suggest scoping a reservation's demand to the connection's own subscribers.
moq-mux: an export start at the live edge, independent of with_max_delay, so a recording starts at the click and a rolled-over file does not repeat the last one's end.
A recording stopped right after the catalog arrives can save an MP4 with tracks but no samples (moq-mux's finish returns a trailer once the init is written); removing those needs moq-mux to report sample counts.
Recovering a crashed recording (moq_mux::container::mp4::repair) on the next launch.
A file of its own for each guest and other broadcast source, read from the relay origin the studio subscribes through, for isolated guest recordings.
Review
Reviewer: Codex, gpt-6.1-sol, medium effort (quest review --base origin/main --new), a new session for the hand-resolved merge of #27. Round 7 reviewed head 1967201d53a105ab237fd744877acf54ceb72609 and reported no findings.
Round 1 (e520949, the merge of chore(moq): pin moq fd07f5b for the audio capture split and mix router #27): medium, main.rs: quitting finished the recording before fix(studio): drain the program encoder before a pause, a resize, and at exit #23's drain, so the file missed the pictures the encoders still held. Fixed in a3b898b: Recorder::close before Engine::stop, then Recorder::done; while closing, the program's file reads its tracks to their ends, adds and rolls over nothing, and ends the source files with it. Engine::stop also finishes the program audio track. Tests a_closed_recording_reads_the_program_to_its_end (2 s rather than 1 s after closing, no (2) file) and the GPU test the_program_records_without_a_relay (record, close, stop: one saved file with video and audio).
Round 2 (a3b898b): medium, record.rs: a closing program file whose first catalog snapshot came after the tracks ended waited forever. Fixed in c79470b. Test a_recording_closed_before_it_read_anything_finishes, which timed out without the fix.
Online (OpenAI) on 0a277ce and c79470b: a closed recording that had read an empty program never woke, and a failure waiting as a recording stopped could be lost. Fixed in 4dbcfdb (closing is a kio channel the program's listing polls; a ready catalog or export result before the stop), with tests a_recording_of_an_empty_program_finishes_once_closed and a_failure_wins_over_a_stop, which fail without the fixes. CodeRabbit's nitpicks: the on-demand test now subscribes again after the gap (4dbcfdb); a per-source video file in the GPU test declined, since only capture sources publish video. Reply.
Online (OpenAI) on 77bfd6f: a closed recording with an empty cached program ended before polling the catalog, so a catalog failure already waiting was reported as empty. Fixed in 448e11c: the catalog is polled first; a_recording_of_an_empty_program_finishes_once_closed now also aborts the catalog just before closing and expects the failure.
Online (CodeRabbit) on 448e11c: a scene stem of 216 bytes or more left source file names no room for the source's name; fixed in 1967201 (each source keeps at least 64 bytes; a_long_name_is_cut_to_fit). A timeout on a stalled write_all, refuted: the stop is checked between chunks and AGENTS.md rules out timeout workarounds (reply). Stopping the engine when Engine::start fails after the program thread starts, refuted as pre-existing on main (engine.rs:549-559) and out of scope (reply).
Earlier sessions, on heads before this merge: a capture that changed size became a second track in its source's MP4 (fixed in 3467cef); a re-added source was suppressed (fixed in 2d1ed8f, af75f5e, 1b79b84); the online review on 1b79b84 found a source whose file could not be created suppressed (fixed in 04ab46a, reply); the online reviews on 8c6e237 and 3467cef found nothing.
Checks
Local (macOS, Metal, VideoToolbox) on the head 1967201: full just ci through the Nix dev shell, including clippy with moq-scene/capture,moq-studio/capture,moq-studio/openh264,moq-studio/cef (163 tests passed). The ignored GPU tests engine::tests::the_program_records_without_a_relay and the_program_reaches_a_relay passed here; just render-sw (Linux Mesa), which runs them in CI, did not run here.
No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.
Walkthrough
The studio can record its program and, optionally, individual source tracks to MP4 files. Recording can run without relay connections. The engine creates a program broadcast for recording and replay, and video encoding responds to viewer and recording demand. The Output panel adds recording controls and file status. A recordings-directory option sets the destination, and the application finishes active recordings when the window closes.
Merge Risk: Low · up to 19672
Recording is mergeable with awareness that an indefinitely stalled destination filesystem can prevent recording completion and delay quitting. Long filenames are now bounded; the startup cleanup concern predates this change.

P2 — Release the source's slot when file creation fails (rs/moq-studio/src/record.rs:302–305): source_file can return without spawning a writer when create fails, but the caller still inserts the source into writing. Only a completed writer removes that entry, so even after the source disappears and is re-added (and the filesystem problem is fixed), it remains suppressed for the rest of the recording. Have source_file report whether a writer started and hold a failed source in ended only until its listing disappears. Add a failed-create/remove/re-add regression.
Recording through local subscriptions sensibly shares the live encoders and keeps files independent. Static review only; I did not independently run the GPU or recording tests.
Re the automated review on 1b79b84, P2 (a source whose file could not be created stayed suppressed): fixed in 04ab46a. Run::source_file now returns whether a writer started. A source whose file could not be created goes into ended, which holds it back only until a catalog snapshot no longer lists it, so once removed and added back it records again. record::tests::a_source_that_failed_to_start_records_once_added_back makes the recordings directory read-only while a source is added, checks that its file fails with cannot create, removes it, restores the directory, adds it back, and expects a second, saved ... mic.mp4 of about 1 s. Head 8c6e237 has the same tree as 04ab46a, which quest review round 4 passed with no findings.
The earlier failed-create finding is fixed: a source whose file cannot be created is held in ended until it disappears, so it can be recorded after being added back. The new regression covers that sequence. I found no additional actionable issue in the recording changes or their integration with the merged setup and startup changes.
Static review only; I did not independently run the recording, GPU, or UI tests.
Brings in effects (#17), failover (#19), guests (#10), the agent docs
(#26), and outside edits (#24). The program's broadcast now goes live on
every relay through the connections `connect` opens, held beside the
recorder's origin, and health grades each relay's link.

A capture that changes size or color space moves to a new track. The
source's recording took it as a second video track in the same MP4,
which players skip, so the file stopped showing the capture at the
resize. The file now ends there, keeping the old track to its end, and
the source goes on in a numbered file of its own.

Automated review by review (OpenAI)
Reviewed head 3467cef, including the source-track rotation and integration with the newer scene and source changes.
No additional actionable issue found. The rotation finishes the old source track before starting a numbered file for its replacement; the new regression covers that sequence, while the earlier failed-create handling remains in place.
Verification: GitHub-only static review of recording, source replacement and tests. I did not run recording, GPU or UI tests; the new rotation test exercises an audio fixture rather than an actual video size or color change.
Brings in #25 (Health grades each source's own tracks) and #16 (scene
editing and live canvas resize). A live canvas change now replaces the
program video track under a running recording, so the program's file
goes on in a numbered one, as a source's does. Without a relay, a
canvas the machine cannot encode no longer leaves the studio without a
recorder: the program records its audio, says why the video stopped,
and a new canvas tries again.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
An export that failed before writing anything had its error dropped with
the empty file, so the Output panel showed it as nothing recorded. The
README also says a file that goes on in the next repeats up to 2 s.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Brings in #20 (instant replay and clips). The program's catalog and
clock, which a replay reads, live on the program's broadcast beside the
recorder rather than on the relay output; replays still need --connect.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Brings in #27 (moq fd07f5b). The program audio thread advances the bus
and publishes the program Mix, which the recording reads from the
broadcast as before; the program's broadcast announces under an
Instance rather than an Epoch, live or not.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The recording stopped before the program's encoders drained on quit, so
its file missed what they still held. Quitting now closes the recording:
it reads the program until stopping the studio ends the program's
tracks, video and now audio too, then finishes, going on in no other
file, and the source files finish with it.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Closing waited for the tracks the program file recorded to end, but one
whose first snapshot came after the studio stopped had recorded none,
so it waited for a catalog update that never came and quitting hung.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
[P2] Wake a recording that already read an empty catalog on quit (rs/moq-studio/src/record.rs:183–186, 597–611). Offline startup can lack a video encoder, and a later audio failure can remove the remaining program rendition. If a new recording reads that empty snapshot before quit, its listing waits for another catalog update. close() only sets an atomic; stopping has no producer left to remove, while the program still holds the catalog open, so done() can wait forever. Wake the listing on close and let it finish from its cached empty snapshot; test the empty-snapshot-before-close ordering as well as the new close-before-first-read case.
The earlier pending-error loss remains on explicit stop and when program completion stops other writers. The new quit path does let an established program recording read encoder tail before finishing. Verification: GitHub-only static inspection of the shutdown, catalog and pinned export paths. I did not run recording, GPU or UI tests.
… stop
A program file that had read a catalog with no program tracks waited on
the catalog when closed, which no longer changes, so quitting hung; the
listing now watches the close too and ends with nothing left to read. A
stop that raced a failure already waiting could report the file empty or
saved; the file now takes what the export has, the failure included,
before the stop. The on-demand source test also covers the next
subscriber after the gap.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Letting a ready export win over the stop meant a disk slower than the
broadcast could keep a recording going after Stop. The stop is checked
on every chunk instead, with one look at the export first so a failure
already waiting is still what the file reports.

Replies to the automated reviews on 0a277ce and c79470b, and to CodeRabbit's nitpicks on 93c45d5. Head is now 77bfd6f.
OpenAI on c79470b, P2: a closed recording that had read an empty program never woke. Fixed in 4dbcfdb. The closing flag is now a kio::Producer<bool>, and the program's Listing polls it next to the catalog, so Recorder::close wakes the listing. If the cached snapshot lists no program tracks, the listing ends without waiting for another catalog update. Both orders are tested:
a_recording_of_an_empty_program_finishes_once_closed reads an empty snapshot first, then closes. Without the wake it times out.
a_recording_closed_before_it_read_anything_finishes closes before the first read.
OpenAI on 0a277ce and c79470b: a pending failure lost to a stop. Fixed:
In 4dbcfdb, a ready export result first won over the stop.
In 77bfd6f I reworked that, because a disk slower than the broadcast could then hold a stop off forever. record() now reads the stop flag before every chunk. On a stop it takes one non-blocking look at the export, which surfaces a waiting catalog or track failure before it hands back media, then stops the export.
write() takes a ready catalog result before the stop.
When the program's file ends, the other writers are stopped the same way, so their waiting failures also survive.
Test a_failure_wins_over_a_stop aborts the catalog and stops together, with a program file and a source file. Both must report reading the broadcast. Without the fix it fails in 5 of 6 runs.
CodeRabbit on 93c45d5, publish.rs: subscribe again after the on-demand encoder closes. Done in 4dbcfdb. an_on_demand_video_encodes_while_subscribed now subscribes again after the encoder closes. It checks that the encoder reopens and that the new subscriber's first group comes after the gap: a higher sequence than the first subscriber's group, with a frame in it.
CodeRabbit on 93c45d5, engine.rs: cover per-source video recording in the no-relay GPU test. Declined for now. Only capture sources publish video of their own:
color and image sources publish stills;
a browser source publishes no track (README, "Source frames");
a replay source needs --connect.
So the test would need capture hardware, which CI's render-sw does not have. record::tests covers per-source files without hardware, with tone sources: rollover, removal, re-adding, failed creation, and stopping.
The local quest review (Codex) found nothing on 77bfd6f. just ci passes, including the capture/openh264/cef clippy, and the ignored GPU tests pass on macOS.

[P2] Preserve an already-failed empty catalog when closing (rs/moq-studio/src/record.rs:621–627). The close signal now wakes an empty program listing, fixing the previously reported quit hang. But this new early return runs before catalog.poll_next: if the writer has cached an empty program, the catalog aborts, and quit calls close() before the next writer poll, it returns Ok(None) without observing the ready error. The catalog follower deliberately does not forward its error, so the file reports Empty rather than Failed. Poll for a ready catalog failure before taking the cached-empty close path, without waiting for a new update, and extend a_recording_of_an_empty_program_finishes_once_closed to abort the catalog immediately before closing.
The explicit-stop path now gives an already-ready catalog/export failure a chance to win, and the per-chunk stop check prevents continuously arriving media from starving stop. Verification: GitHub-only static review of the recorder, its tests, and the pinned mux export. I did not run recording, GPU or UI tests; the close/error interleaving is source-traced, not reproduced.
Closing ended a program file with nothing left to read before polling
the catalog, so a catalog that had just failed went unread and the file
reported empty. The catalog is polled first, and the file ends empty
only once nothing is waiting there.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Re the automated review on 77bfd6f, P2 (a closed, empty program recording lost a catalog failure that was already waiting): fixed in 448e11c.
Listing::poll_next now polls the catalog before anything else:
a ready failure is returned, so the file reports Failed;
a ready snapshot goes through the closing logic;
only when the catalog has nothing waiting does a closing listing whose cached program is empty end as Empty.
a_recording_of_an_empty_program_finishes_once_closed now records twice:
once closing after an empty program, which expects Empty;
once aborting the catalog just before close(), with the file given no chance to read the failure first, which expects Failed with reading the broadcast. With the old early return, this second case reported Empty.
That review had no other items. The local quest review (Codex) found nothing on 448e11c, and just ci passes, including the capture/openh264/cef clippy.

The previously reported cached-empty close race is fixed: the listing now polls the catalog first and propagates a ready failure before taking the empty-close path. The updated test aborts the catalog immediately before closing and requires a failed outcome. The close wake and per-chunk stop handling remain in place. I found no additional actionable issue in this change.

Stop the engine before Engine::start returns an error after the program thread starts.
If creating the audio or autosave thread fails, Engine::start returns early. The program thread already holds an Arc<Engine> and keeps rendering, encoding, and publishing until stop() sets its flag. Call stop() on these error paths before returning.

Run::follow returns success when opening the catalog fails, and its later catalog-read branch likewise returns success on an error. A failure confined to this follower may silently disable per-source recording.
The program file can finish as saved while expected source files are absent, without a recorded follower failure.
This can occur when: The follower's catalog consumer fails while a program-file consumer remains healthy during a session started with sources = true.

Run::follow excludes a source from new-file creation while its previous writer remains in writing; a newly listed replacement may therefore wait for the old track's export to finish before recording begins.
The beginning of the replacement source is missing from its MP4, or no replacement file starts if the old track never ends.
This can occur when: A source is replaced under the same name while its old encoder or track takes more than MAX_DELAY to end, but the replacement is already publishing.

weakening existing recording safeguards.

Review comments at @rs/moq-studio/src/engine.rs:
- Around line 581-594: Update Engine::start so failures while creating the audio
or autosave thread call Engine::stop before returning the error, ensuring the
already-started program thread is stopped. Preserve the existing error
propagation after cleanup.

A scene stem of 216 bytes or more left source files no room for their
source's name, so they differed only by number. The scene stem is now
cut to leave each source at least 64 bytes.

Re CodeRabbit's review on 448e11c, engine.rs:581-594 (stop the engine if Engine::start fails after the program thread starts): declining as out of scope. This PR didn't introduce it. On main, Engine::start already starts the program thread and then returns early if the audio or autosave thread fails to start (origin/main:rs/moq-studio/src/engine.rs:549-559). This PR only keeps the audio thread's handle so stop can join it. Rolling back workers when start fails belongs in its own follow-up.
The other two inline items are answered on their threads: the source-name reserve is fixed in 1967201, and the write timeout is declined. The local quest review (Codex) found nothing on 1967201, and just ci passes.

The long-scene-name fix now reserves 64 bytes for each source name while keeping the timestamp and largest numbered suffix within the filename budget. Truncation still respects UTF-8 character boundaries, and the extended test exercises the long-scene case. The previously reviewed cached-empty close/error fix remains in place. I found no additional actionable issue in this delta.
Verification: GitHub-only static review of the filename construction, collision numbering, and tests. I did not run filesystem, recording, GPU, or UI tests.

Problem
Recording: the studio records the program to disk, and optionally each source as its own isolated file, whether or not it is live, starting and stopping without touching live outputs. Today the program is encoded only with
--connect, and nothing writes a file.Approach
--connect, and--failoverbeside it, publish that origin, each relay's connection opened as before. Without a relay, a canvas the machine cannot encode no longer fails startup: the studio composes, previews, and records audio, the Output panel says why the video stopped, and a new canvas tries again (as a live resize to an unencodable canvas already does since #16).rs/moq-studio/src/record.rsreads the broadcast with moq-mux's crash-safemp4::Export(moq-cli'ssubscribe --format mp4path), so a recording shares the live encoders and never restarts or keyframes them. This is the shape the destinations quest plans for its egress library ("remuxes its own broadcast"). No moq change.--on-demand, otherwise only while watched or recorded. Without a relay, source tracks encode only while subscribed too (Publish::on_demand, which drops the encoder between subscribers and marks the gap), so an offline studio encodes no video until it records.dev.moq.studio.sourceswith video or audio a file of its own, read through aStreamthat narrows the studio catalog to that source's nested catalog. A source added mid-recording starts its file then; one removed finishes it; one whose track is replaced (a capture that changes size or color space moves to a new track) finishes it and goes on in a numbered file; one whose file failed, or could not be created, is not retried until it leaves the catalog and is listed again. Stills (binary tracks only) and broadcast sources, guests included, get none.Streamas a source's (narrowed to the root's media withCatalog::media), so it ends there, keeping the old video to its end, and the program goes on in... (2).mp4with the new rendition, which joins once its encoder opens. Without it, the new rendition would land in the same MP4 as a second video track players skip, and the file would silently stop showing video. Rollover works with or without each source too.<scene stem> <UTC start>.mp4and<scene stem> <UTC start> <source>.mp4in--recordings(default: the scene file's directory), numbered rather than overwritten. A file plays while it grows and becomes a regular MP4 (ftyp, mdat, moov) on stop or quit; quitting waits for that. A file nothing was written to is removed.Impact
--recordings <dir>.--connect, the studio now builds the program broadcast and encodes Opus audio continuously (cheap), and encodes program and source video only while recording. It used to encode nothing.--on-demandnow also counts a recording as demand; its help says so.Outputto the always-builtProgram; replays still need--connect), #8 (a browser source publishes no track, so no file of its own), and #23 (an on-demand source drains itsEncodingwith a discontinuity between subscribers; quitting closes a recording, which then reads the program untilEngine::stopends its tracks, so the file keeps what the encoders drain on the way out, rolls over into no other file, and ends the source files with it;Engine::stopnow ends the program audio track too), and #27 (the program audio the recording reads is the bus's programMix, published as before;EpochbecameInstance).Choices made without asking
Producercannot publish pre-encoded packets) and would diverge from the egress design. Suggested moq follow-up below.MAX_DELAYis 2 s: moq-mux's consumer starts at the oldest group within the skip budget, so a recording begins with up to 2 s from before the click, and only a disk stalled over 2 s loses media. A moq-mux start option independent of the skip budget would make the start exact.-_.(). The scene stem (leaving each source at least 64 bytes), then the source name, are cut between characters so every name, with the largest(N)and.mp4, fits in 255 bytes (CodeRabbit thread).MAX_DELAY(2 s) of the tracks that carry on, such as the program audio, so the end repeats rather than being lost. Exact handover needs the moq-mux live-edge start below; the README says so.Alternatives
moq-archive instead of MP4.
Follow-ups
with_max_delay, so a recording starts at the click and a rolled-over file does not repeat the last one's end.finishreturns a trailer once the init is written); removing those needs moq-mux to report sample counts.moq_mux::container::mp4::repair) on the next launch.Review
Reviewer: Codex, gpt-6.1-sol, medium effort (
quest review --base origin/main --new), a new session for the hand-resolved merge of #27. Round 7 reviewed head1967201d53a105ab237fd744877acf54ceb72609and reported no findings.main.rs: quitting finished the recording before fix(studio): drain the program encoder before a pause, a resize, and at exit #23's drain, so the file missed the pictures the encoders still held. Fixed in a3b898b:Recorder::closebeforeEngine::stop, thenRecorder::done; while closing, the program's file reads its tracks to their ends, adds and rolls over nothing, and ends the source files with it.Engine::stopalso finishes the program audio track. Testsa_closed_recording_reads_the_program_to_its_end(2 s rather than 1 s after closing, no(2)file) and the GPU testthe_program_records_without_a_relay(record, close, stop: one saved file with video and audio).record.rs: a closing program file whose first catalog snapshot came after the tracks ended waited forever. Fixed in c79470b. Testa_recording_closed_before_it_read_anything_finishes, which timed out without the fix.kiochannel the program's listing polls; a ready catalog or export result before the stop), with testsa_recording_of_an_empty_program_finishes_once_closedanda_failure_wins_over_a_stop, which fail without the fixes. CodeRabbit's nitpicks: the on-demand test now subscribes again after the gap (4dbcfdb); a per-source video file in the GPU test declined, since only capture sources publish video. Reply.record.rs: letting a ready export win over the stop could hold a stop off while media keeps arriving. Fixed in 77bfd6f: the stop is read before every chunk, with one non-blocking look at the export first so a waiting failure is still reported. Design checkpoint: the approach holds; these are local fixes to the stop and close paths.a_recording_of_an_empty_program_finishes_once_closednow also aborts the catalog just before closing and expects the failure.a_long_name_is_cut_to_fit). A timeout on a stalledwrite_all, refuted: the stop is checked between chunks and AGENTS.md rules out timeout workarounds (reply). Stopping the engine whenEngine::startfails after the program thread starts, refuted as pre-existing on main (engine.rs:549-559) and out of scope (reply).Previous session (Codex, same model and effort), through head 0a277ce:
a_failure_before_any_media_says_why); the next program file re-reads up to 2 s of audio, refuted: moq-mux'smp4::Export(moq/rs/moq-mux/src/container/mp4.rs:78-101) offers no start position besideswith_max_delay, and the fix is the moq-mux follow-up below; documented in the README.Earlier sessions, on heads before this merge: a capture that changed size became a second track in its source's MP4 (fixed in 3467cef); a re-added source was suppressed (fixed in 2d1ed8f, af75f5e, 1b79b84); the online review on 1b79b84 found a source whose file could not be created suppressed (fixed in 04ab46a, reply); the online reviews on 8c6e237 and 3467cef found nothing.
