feat: one-command install without native builds - #434
Installing DevSpace today depends on the user's Node and npm in ways that keep breaking. better-sqlite3 is a native addon that downloads a prebuild for the active Node ABI or falls back to node-gyp, node-pty has no Linux prebuilds so every Linux install compiles it, a dependency range pulled in a breaking Pi release on fresh installs (#360), and onboarding is "install Node 22.19+, then npm or npx, then init". This makes installation one command and removes every compile step from it.
The native dependencies go first. node-pty becomes @lydell/node-pty, which publishes per-platform prebuilt packages for Linux, macOS, and Windows with spawn-helper already executable, so the macOS permissions postinstall is deleted. better-sqlite3 becomes the built-in node:sqlite, which every Node in our >=22.19 <27 range has. That needs Drizzle's node-sqlite driver, so Drizzle moves to an exact pin of 1.0.0-rc.5; OpenCode ships the same version and driver in production, and our usage (schema plus the core query builder, no drizzle-kit or relational queries) avoids v1's breaking changes. A small transaction() helper replaces better-sqlite3's wrapper and keeps nested calls as savepoints. The database file format is unchanged: a backup of a real v1 state database opened with all 15 migrations recognised and integrity_check ok.
node:sqlite still prints an ExperimentalWarning in every process that loads it, and built-ins load while the module graph links, before any app code runs. So bin/silence-sqlite-warning.js is preloaded: the bin launcher imports it first and the agent daemon receives it through --import. It drops only the SQLite warning. While here, the CLI's Node guard and doctor still advertised >=20.12; Node 20 would now crash on node:sqlite, so the guard reads engines.node from package.json.
The installers (install/install.sh, install/install.ps1) follow Pi's model rather than a compiled binary, because DevSpace spawns Node children (agentd, the workflow runner, the bundled Pi CLI) through process.execPath. They reuse a compatible Node on PATH or download a checksum-verified Node 24 LTS for DevSpace alone, install into a user-owned npm prefix with --ignore-scripts, write devspace launchers that pin that Node so version managers cannot break them, add the launcher directory to PATH, and run devspace init from the terminal even under curl | sh.
User-facing docs are deliberately left out so this can ship in a v1.1 beta: the website deploys from main, npm latest is still 1.0.8 (which needs better-sqlite3's install script and so cannot be installed with --ignore-scripts), and the troubleshooting page still describes 1.0.x. The README, quickstart, troubleshooting, and landing changes live in #436 and land with the stable release. Beta testers can try the installer with DEVSPACE_VERSION=beta.
The test suite passes on Node 25.6 and 22.22, the packed tarball installs and runs doctor and the daemon with --ignore-scripts, and #435 runs both installers in CI on Linux, macOS, and Windows, with an existing Node and with the installer downloading its own.

Walkthrough
The pull request adds macOS, Linux, WSL, and Windows installers. It replaces better-sqlite3 access with shared node:sqlite helpers, updates database stores and CLI diagnostics, filters SQLite experimental warnings, and changes the optional PTY package.
Changes: Platform installers
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Select or install Node install/install.sh, install/install.ps1
The installers use a compatible Node runtime when available. Otherwise, they download Node 24 on supported platforms and verify its checksum.
Install package and configure launchers install/install.sh, install/install.ps1
The installers install DevSpace, create launchers pinned to the selected Node, configure PATH, and optionally run devspace init.
Shared helpers open databases, run transactions, and back up databases. The database client, migrations, and development-state backup use the shared APIs.
Move stores and tests to shared SQLite APIs src/local-agent-store.ts, src/oauth-store.ts, src/workflow-store.ts, src/workspace-activity-store.ts, src/*store.test.ts, src/dev-state.test.ts
Store transactions use the shared helper. Database tests use the shared opener and updated query result access.
The CLI checks SQLite with node:sqlite and reads the Node engine range from package metadata. The preload filters matching SQLite experimental warnings, and CLI tests invoke the built entrypoint.
The optional dependency changes to @lydell/node-pty. The permission-fix script and build-allowlist entries for better-sqlite3 and node-pty are removed.

node-pty ships no Linux prebuilds, so every Linux install compiled it
with node-gyp, and macOS needed a postinstall to restore spawn-helper's
execute bit. @lydell/node-pty publishes per-platform prebuilt packages
(including Linux) with correct permissions, so the postinstall goes away.

better-sqlite3 is a native addon that either downloads a prebuild for the
active Node ABI or falls back to node-gyp, which broke installs on
unusual Node versions and blocked installing with --ignore-scripts.
node:sqlite is built into every Node allowed by engines (>=22.19), so
DevSpace state no longer needs a compiled dependency.
- Drizzle moves to 1.0.0-rc.5 (exact pin) for its node-sqlite driver.
- A small transaction() helper replaces better-sqlite3's transaction
wrapper, keeping nested calls as savepoints.
- node:sqlite still emits an ExperimentalWarning, and built-ins load
while the module graph links, so the filter is preloaded: the bin
launcher imports it first and the agent daemon gets it via --import.
- doctor reports node:sqlite instead of the native module, and the
better-sqlite3 rebuild troubleshooting entry is gone.
Existing databases open unchanged (same SQLite file format); verified
against a backup of a real v1 state database.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The CLI guard and doctor still advertised >=20.12 while package.json
requires >=22.19, which node:sqlite now depends on. Read the range from
engines so they cannot drift.

install.sh and install.ps1 reuse a compatible Node on PATH or download
a checksum-verified Node 24 LTS for DevSpace alone, install the package
into a user-owned npm prefix with --ignore-scripts (no sudo, no native
builds), write devspace launchers that pin that Node so version managers
cannot break it, add the launcher directory to PATH, and run
devspace init from the terminal even under curl | sh. Rerunning updates.

Use unsafeNarrow for node:sqlite row results instead of chained casts,
avoid typeof in the warning filter, and add the required blank lines.

its meaning when the profile loads. Preserve the existing default-path line
format so the grep -Fqs check continues to recognize it on reruns.
- Around line 109-110: Update the Node selection flow in install/install.sh so
generated launchers store the real Node executable path rather than a
version-switching shim path; verify the resolved executable with
node_is_compatible before writing the launchers.
- Around line 137-143: Update the launcher generation in write_launchers to
escape shell-significant characters in NODE and package_dir before inserting
them into the unquoted heredoc. Use the escaped values in the generated Node
check, error message, and exec command so paths remain literal when the launcher
runs.

Address review findings on the installers:
- Pin the real Node binary (process.execPath) instead of a mise, asdf, or
Volta shim, which would re-resolve to whatever version is active.
- Single-quote paths written into the sh launchers and shell profiles so
$, quotes, and spaces stay literal; fish gets its own quoting.
- On Windows, write .cmd paths under the profile folders through
%LOCALAPPDATA%, %APPDATA%, or %USERPROFILE% so non-ASCII usernames
survive cmd.exe's code page, escape literal %, and fail clearly for
other non-ASCII paths.
- Fail the install when the new launcher cannot report its version.
- Preload the node:sqlite warning filter for pnpm dev and npm start too.

Name the bash login-shell case in the PATH message.
On Linux, the installer appends the PATH export to ~/.bashrc for bash. A bash login shell reads ~/.bash_profile, ~/.bash_login, or ~/.profile, and reads ~/.bashrc only when that file sources it. In a login shell whose profile does not source ~/.bashrc, devspace is not found by name, even after the message's "open a new shell" advice. The message is shared by all shells the installer handles, so the login-shell guidance needs a bash-specific branch. Tell bash users to load ~/.bashrc in the current shell, or to source it from their login profile.

Resolving every Node through process.execPath pinned Homebrew's Cellar
keg, which brew upgrade deletes. Only resolve version-manager shims
(mise/asdf/nodenv shims, Volta) and keep any other Node path as found.
Default to the beta dist-tag: npm latest is 1.0.8, which still needs
better-sqlite3's install script and so cannot be installed with
--ignore-scripts. Switch back to latest when v1.1 ships as stable.
On Windows, quote the Node path in the missing-runtime message so a &
cannot end the echo, and explain how to fix a non-ASCII Node path.

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
The PATH result is stored without making it absolute. If command -v node returns a path relative to the installer's working directory, the launcher may later resolve it relative to a different directory.
Installation can succeed, but the generated devspace launcher subsequently reports a missing runtime or invokes the wrong file.
This can occur when: Node and npm are found in a relative PATH directory such as ./tools/bin, and the installed launcher is subsequently run from another working directory.

Special-casing shims kept missing version managers (fnm's multishell
links, nvm-windows' NVM_SYMLINK). Invert the rule: pin the real binary,
since version managers keep each installed version on disk, and keep the
stable link only for Homebrew (Cellar) and Nix (/nix/store), whose
upgrades delete old versions. On Windows, follow nvm-windows' symlinked
directory explicitly rather than relying on process.execPath.

Keep the launcher working when the selected Cellar node is removed.
117-117: Minor · Stability & Availability · Low value
Keep the launcher working when the selected Cellar node is removed.
When command -v node returns a Homebrew Cellar path, the installer pins that path. brew upgrade removes old Cellar versions, so the launcher then exits with "Node runtime is missing", even if another compatible Node is on PATH. Resolve a stable node path instead, or do not pin Cellar paths. This behavior predates the change. The PR keeps the same pinning for this path.

Update the NODE assignment in the Cellar path branch so it does not pin a
versioned Homebrew Cellar path; use a stable node path or leave runtime
discovery to PATH. Preserve the existing Nix store handling.

On the follow-up about a Homebrew Cellar path returned directly by command -v node: leaving it. Homebrew puts its stable bin/node link on PATH, and that case keeps the link. A Cellar/.../bin directory on PATH is unusual enough not to special-case.
