feat(scene): a media file source that loops or plays on demand - #44
The studio had no way to play a local video or audio file, such as an intro clip or a music bed. Stinger transitions also need a clip they can start on demand.
Approach
media::Clip (rs/moq-scene/src/media.rs) reads the whole file and finds its container from the first bytes. It imports the file through moq_mux::import::Container into a broadcast of its own, with max_age(None) so no group goes stale behind the newest frame. moq-mux reads fragmented MP4, MKV/WebM, MPEG-TS, and FLV. A regular MP4 is refused at setup, and the error gives the ffmpeg remux that makes it readable. Anything else is refused with the list of what it reads.
Driver::media (rs/moq-scene/src/source.rs) decodes the clip from its first group with moq_video::decode and moq_audio::decode, the same options a replay uses. It paces each picture and sound on the program clock (kio::clock). The earlier of the first picture and the first sound is due at once. A play ends once its last sound has played for its samples and its last picture for as long as the one before it. Then the source loops, or holds its last picture, silent, as Status::Ended. A loop's next play is anchored at the previous play's end, so loops keep exact time however long the decoders take to open. A clip that decodes to nothing fails rather than looping instantly.
The sound goes through a bus channel, so it joins the mixes (moq-dev/studio#32) like any other source's. A loop keeps its channel, so the sound runs on. The own sound track continues its timeline only when a play's first sound starts exactly where the last one ended; otherwise it marks a gap and stamps the sound at its moment. So a loop whose sound is shorter than its pictures keeps the silence between loops instead of drifting earlier. A restart, or a play after the clip ended, drops the channel first and opens a new one, which cuts off what the previous play had queued. It also starts a new group (a keyframe) on the pictures' own track, a cut to the clip's start. Once a clip has ended, its own-track encoder settles and is released when nothing uses it.
Own tracks: the pictures go to the source's own track through publish::Video, and the sound through publish::Audio (moq-dev/studio#40). Each encodes only while it is used (moq-dev/studio#21), and the two are judged apart: Publish::set_on_program now takes OnProgram { shown, heard }. publish::Video follows shown, the pictures a scene on air shows. publish::Audio follows heard, the sound the program mix plays. The engine fills heard from Sources::plays for every source with sound. The pictures' track opens from the first decoded picture before a play's clock starts, so the encoder probe delays neither picture nor sound. Pictures are stamped on one timeline from when the source opened, so a loop or restart never runs the track backwards. A file with no sound has no strip once it opens (Feed::strip is None), so no mix plays it and Health never counts it as heard.
Feed::play restarts a media source from its start at once. This is the restart-on-demand API stingers need. Sources::set_on_program takes the set of sources on program each frame, and restarts each media source with restart = true as it enters that set. The engine computes the set once per frame in State::shown (placed items and masks, through clones), before drawing. Feed::play puts up a clear picture at once, so the frame a scene goes on program never shows where the last play ended. Health and the source tracks share that set.
Health reports a source the program shows or plays that is Ended (degraded) or Failed (unhealthy), counting a picture that fails to draw as failed. The Sources panel shows "ended", Play, and Reload for a media source.
The replay's own-track code moved into Own and Driver::encode, which the media source shares, along with the decode options (pictures, sounds) and channel.
Impact
Scene file: new source kind media, with path (relative to the scene file, like an image's), loop (default false), and restart (default false). Additive; no migration.
Sources panel: Media file in the add form, with Loop and Restart on program checkboxes (restart on by default there). A media source has Play (from its start) and Reload (read the file again), and reads as "ended" once it plays to its end.
Health: a source the program shows or plays that ended or failed is now listed. This applies to every source kind: a failed camera on program now shows up too.
Source tracks: a media source lists a video rendition and, when the file has sound, an Opus rendition. On program it holds one encode session for its pictures, like a camera; README's session table says so. The program's shown set now includes mask sources, so a mask's own track encodes while it shapes the program.
README.md documents the source under "Media files".
Source tracks follow the mix rule: a media file's sound track encodes while the program mix plays it, as a microphone's does. Its picture track encodes while a scene on program shows it, or while something reads it. A music bed in the program mix that no scene shows encodes its sound alone.
API (moq-scene, whose only consumer is moq-studio): Source::Media, Status::Ended, Error::Media, Feed::play, Sources::set_on_program, and publish::OnProgram. Publish::set_on_program now takes OnProgram in place of one set of names. No wire or catalog change.
Decisions
✅ Maintainer, 2026-11-05: a media file follows the mix rule. Its own sound track encodes while the program mix plays it, as a microphone's does under the audio-source-tracks rule. Its picture track encodes only while a scene on program shows it, or while something reads it. This replaces the earlier as-built choice, which counted both through the scenes.
Alternatives
Streaming the file through the importer as it plays would bound memory for long files. A demuxer that runs ahead fills the track, so this needs backpressure from the playback position to the reader. moq-mux exposes no import progress to drive that. A stinger also needs its first frame at once. Reading the whole file keeps the code simple and makes every restart instant, at the cost of holding the file's compressed size. README says to keep media sources to clips and music.
Re-opening the source (Sources::restart) for each play re-reads and re-imports the file and drops the own track. Feed::play keeps both.
A decoder kept open across a loop would save a decoder open per loop. Opening per play is simpler, and the last picture covers the open.
Choices made without asking
Both loop and restart default to false in the scene file. The add form ticks Restart on program by default, since a clip that played once while off program is rarely what someone wants.
An ended media file on program is a degraded Health problem, not unhealthy, since holding the last picture is often intended. A failed source on program is unhealthy, and this now applies to any source kind.
A media file never reads as stalled, since it plays from memory.
Ending a play (end of file, then Ended, or a restart) cannot drain the own sound track's last partial Opus frame and lookahead without finishing the track. moq-audio's encode::Producer offers only finish, reanchor, and discontinuity, which drop them. So a play after an end or a restart loses at most about 26 ms of tail on that track. A microphone loses the same on each release. Natural loops keep the timeline and lose nothing.
Test fixtures (rs/moq-scene/src/test_data/, 29 KiB in total) were generated with ffmpeg. The command is in media::tests.
Follow-ups
moq-dev/moq: moq-audio's encode::Producer needs a drain that publishes the last partial frame and the codec lookahead while keeping the track open. Once the pin is bumped, Driver::media would call it before entering Ended, so the own sound track keeps a clip's final ~26 ms. Raised by the local review (rounds 6 and 7). It needs the upstream API, and the maintainer had already picked merge.
moq-dev/moq: moq-mux has no regular (non-fragmented) MP4 import. Most intro clips are regular MP4s, so they need a remux until it lands. The maintainer holds this as a deferred moq quest. Bumping the pin after it would let media::container accept them.
Validation
just ci passes on 5315cf1, after merging moq-dev/studio#43 (keyframes): lints for both feature sets, and 219 tests. GitHub's Check was green on 43528fa, before that merge. The moq-scene media, audio, publish, and replay tests also passed three runs in a row on a Linux x86_64 host on 43528fa.
GPU tests on 5315cf1: compositor::tests (28), engine::tests::the_program_*, and setup::tests::times_every_canvas (3) pass on Apple Metal, and on Linux with Mesa lavapipe as just render-sw runs them.
publish::tests::a_looping_media_file_keeps_its_sound_on_time is new. It loops a fixture with 1 s of pictures and 0.5 s of sound (test_data/uneven.mkv, 10 KiB) through two and a half loops. It checks that the sound track keeps the silence between loops. Without the fix the track is contiguous and drifts.
publish::tests::a_heard_media_file_encodes_only_its_sound is new. A looping music bed that the program mix plays and no scene shows writes frames to its sound track. Meanwhile its picture track writes none and holds no encode session. Once shown, its pictures encode too.
GitHub Check failed on bb25d32 and 079b9af: a_media_file_is_published_on_one_timeline hung on Linux. This was not the ffmpeg download flake. I reproduced it on a Linux host and found the cause by instrumenting the run: every picture showed on time, but moq-video's openh264 backend skips frames to hold its rate ("A skipped frame yields an empty bitstream", moq/rs/moq-video/src/encode/backend/openh264.rs:182). At 64×64 only 2 of 15 pictures landed, so a wait on a frame count never ended. The media publish tests now walk the clip picture by picture (pictures), holding the paused clock on what the driver shows rather than on a decoder's thread or an encoder's output. The timeline test waits for a frame stamped after the restart, which the restart's keyframe guarantees.
New tests, on a paused clock through kio::clock:
media::tests: container sniffing, refusal of a regular MP4, and opening MKV and fragmented MP4.
source::media_tests: pictures on their moments, hold and Ended at the end, looping, restart going on program (and not while it stays on), an audio-only file going silent, and an unreadable file failing with its reason.
publish::tests::a_media_file_is_published_on_one_timeline: own-track timestamps stay increasing across a restart, and an ended clip gives its encode session back once off program. With the release disabled, this test hangs.
publish::tests::an_audio_file_lists_its_sound: an audio-only file lists a live Opus track and no pictures.
an_audio_file_ends_silent also checks that a file with no sound has no strip and no mix plays it. a_media_file_plays_once_and_holds_its_end checks that play clears the held picture at once.
Performance: no compositor or GPU-copy change. Decoding goes to the compositor's device the way broadcast and replay sources do. Encoder load is one session for the own track, only while on program or read, as for a camera.
Review
Reviewer: Codex, gpt-6.1-sol, medium effort (quest review, 8 rounds)
Round 4 (bb25d32): no findings. This round reviewed the merge of main (moq-dev/studio#38 and moq-dev/studio#41). Its hand resolution kept both sides' Feed/Driver fields and main's new play_audio, which now takes its bus channel from Driver::channel.
Round 5 (c9c9ceb): no findings. This round reviewed the merge of moq-dev/studio#40 and the fixes for the online threads.
Round 6 (079b9af): this round reviewed the decision to track picture and sound use apart, the merge of moq-dev/studio#37, and the online OpenAI review of c9c9ceb, whose findings are fixed (a loop keeps the sound track's timeline; a play after Ended resets the channel). One finding remains: drain the own sound track's tail before Ended. It is deferred, not refuted: it needs a moq-audio drain API (see Follow-ups), and this repository never edits moq/.
Round 7 (43528fa): this round reviewed the fixes since 079b9af. Those are the CI hang (test restructure, plus a keyframe on restart), the OpenAI P2 drift for unequal durations, and CodeRabbit's no-frames loop. It also covered the merge of moq-dev/studio#45. Its only finding is the same deferred upstream tail drain, which it agrees must land in moq-audio first.
Round 8 (5315cf1): the merge of moq-dev/studio#43 (keyframes) applied without textual conflicts. Keyframes start in the compositor when an item's scene goes on program. A media restart fires from Sources::set_on_program, which runs before render in the same tick, so both follow the same cut or transition. The only finding is again the deferred upstream tail drain. This is the fourth-round design checkpoint. The approach stands: no new findings since round 4 beyond the online ones fixed, and the one open item needs moq-audio.
Online threads on 079b9af, all answered and resolved:
CodeRabbit source.rs:1374: fixed.
CodeRabbit media.rs:34: refuted. The path is a local, user-written file read whole by design, and REVIEW.md rules out a cap.
CodeRabbit engine.rs:1020: refuted. A restart follows a scene going on program; being heard is mixer state a cut never changes.
OpenAI's P2 on that head: fixed, as above.
Online threads: pullfrog (collection.rs:1020) and CodeRabbit (source.rs:1281 and :1359; engine.rs:216, :886, :887, and :967) are fixed. CodeRabbit's source.rs:1241, :1307, and :1321 are refuted in their threads:
moq_video::Frame is not Clone, so an ended clip cannot keep a held picture for its track.
Pre-opening the next loop's decoders is already listed under Alternatives.
While a clip plays, the encoder is released within one frame interval.
A `media` source plays a local video or audio file on the program clock,
demuxed by moq-mux and decoded by moq-video and moq-audio. It loops, or
plays once and holds its last picture; going on program can restart it,
and `Feed::play` restarts it on demand. A file that ends or fails reads
as ended or failed in Sources and Health.

…und on restart
An ended clip delivers no more pictures, so its own track's encoder was
held until the next play even off program. It now settles and releases
like a still capture. A restart takes a new bus channel, so the sound
the cut-off play queued does not play before the new start.

…the next
A channel left on the strip kept the strip's queue and delay for the new
one, so the cut-off play's sound still played first.

Media file source
feat(scene): a media file source that loops or plays on demand
Nov 5, 2026
The media-source direction is useful, but three lifecycle cases need attention:
rs/moq-scene/src/source.rs:1086–1087: Play after Ended returns directly to play_clip, bypassing the audio channel reset used for mid-play restarts. Delayed samples from the previous play can therefore sound after restart. Reset the channel on this path too, while preserving it for automatic loops.
rs/moq-studio/src/engine.rs:870–875: Video-only media still receives a routed audio strip, so an off-program clip can degrade health as an unheard audio source even though it contains no audio. Use actual media audio availability when determining health relevance.
rs/moq-scene/src/source.rs:1096–1100: An ended clip only waits for track demand changes while its encoder is already open. If it ended off program, later recording its own track or showing its held frame with restart=false cannot open the encoder or publish that frame. Retain the final frame and handle the closed-to-used transition as well as release.
The earlier mid-play audio reset and encoder-release fixes address their stated paths; the cases above are distinct. Verification: GitHub-only static review; no builds or runtime tests were run.

ℹ️
Reviewed the media source end to end, including the moq contracts it leans on.
Checks that hold
moq_video/moq_audiodecode::Start both default to Oldest, so Clip::open plus pictures()/sounds() really decode from the first group, and with_max_age(None) keeps the imported groups from aging out.
Clip::open can snapshot() right after Container::new + finish(), which the opens_both_renditions test pins.
Own-track timestamps stay increasing across loops and mid-play restarts (Driver::encode restamps onto Own::origin, Video::encode anchors epoch once), and ended releases the encoder once nothing uses it.
Sources::set_on_program sees clones through State::shown's capture(), and the README/Health prose matches the new behavior.
On the existing review (OpenAI): I traced all three cases and they are real but narrow. (1) is bounded by the bus delay plus one buffer, which the just-in-time sounds writes, so it is sub-second; (2) is the optimistic has_audio, covered by the inline comment below; (3) needs an ended, off-program, restart = false clip later shown or recorded, which the stinger path (restart = true) never takes. None blocks the PR.
New: the mirror of (2) on the picture side — Media claims a track before the file is opened, so an audio-only file never publishes one and reads as track starting forever. Anchored inline.
Restart/loop state machine, the added tests, and the quest/README updates all line up.
The change adds media files as audio or video sources. It adds container detection and clip import, then schedules media playback on the program timeline with looping, one-shot completion, and replay controls. Studio gains media source creation options, Play and Reload actions, and health and status reporting for ended or failed sources. Documentation and quest plans also describe media source behavior and browser file selection.
Merge Risk: Moderate · up to c9c9c
Large or empty media files can disrupt the studio, and audio-only media may not restart when it enters the program mix. Resolve these playback and availability issues before merging.

A Play request received while Ended returns directly to playback without replacing sound, unlike a request received during active playback.
Audio from the previous play survives the restart and precedes or overlaps the new play instead of being cut off.
This can occur when: A short one-shot clip ends with audio still queued under a configured delay, and Play or program-entry restart is requested before that queue drains.

Review comment at @rs/moq-scene/src/source.rs around lines 1086 - 1087:
Update the Play or program-entry restart handling for Status::Ended so it clears
or replaces any queued audio from the previous play before returning to
playback, matching the existing active-playback restart behavior. Locate the
handling around the Status::Ended transition and self.ended call, and preserve
the configured delay for the new play.
Make the restart test fail when the second play does not start.
The test asserts only that at least ten pictures arrive with strictly increasing timestamps. With feed.play() ignored, the clip shows its ten pictures from 0 to 900 ms on the same timeline. Both checks still pass. The test therefore does not detect a restart that never happens on the own-track publish path. The shared-driver restart test in source.rs covers a different entry point.
Add a check that separates a restarted play from an uninterrupted clip. Pictures are stamped when they show on the own timeline. The spacing around the restart point distinguishes the two cases. After a restart, the gap from the fifth to the sixth stamp is about 50 ms (400 ms to 450 ms). For an uninterrupted clip, the gap is 100 ms.

Update the restart test around feed.play() and the stamps assertions to verify
the gap between the fifth and sixth timestamps is approximately 50 ms, using the
test’s timestamp units and an appropriate tolerance. Ensure the check fails when
playback continues uninterrupted with a 100 ms gap.
Add an observation interval before the unchanged-program status check.
The check at lines 2314-2319 runs immediately after set_on_program(&both). A restart that set_on_program queues runs only when the driver is polled, so the check passes either way. Advance the clock briefly before asserting. A restart then sets Live before the check, and the check fails.

In the test around set_on_program(&both), advance the existing async test clock
briefly before asserting the source status, allowing queued driver work to run.
Keep the assertion that intro.mkv remains Status::Ended after the interval.
Assert the audio output in an_audio_file_ends_silent.
The test checks the status transitions and the absence of a picture. It does not read any audio. A media source that never writes samples to its bus channel still reaches Status::Ended, so the test passes. The doc comment says the file goes silent at its end, but no assertion checks that.
Observe the mixed output of the test bus. Assert that samples are present before the end of the file and that the output is silent after it. The test context currently discards the second value returned by Bus::new, at rs/moq-scene/src/source.rs:1487. Keep that value and read the output through it, if it exposes samples.

Update an_audio_file_ends_silent to observe the mixed audio output through the
second value returned by Bus::new, currently discarded in the test setup. Assert
that samples are present before the file ends and that output is silent
afterward, while preserving the existing status and picture assertions; first
verify the bus value exposes a suitable way to read samples.

Playback completion depends on Container::finish closing every imported rendition while the Container remains retained; a format-specific flush-only implementation could leave readers waiting forever.
The source remains live indefinitely, never loops, and never reaches Ended.
This can occur when: A finite TS or FLV file reaches its last frame, but its importer retains an unfinished track producer.

A clip with selected renditions but no decoded frames returns successful completion, allowing looping media to restart indefinitely without a progress guard.
The source may continuously reconstruct decoders and consume a CPU core while remaining Live and producing nothing.
This can occur when: A header-only or truncated supported container advertises a rendition, yields clean EOF without frames, and has loop enabled.

Natural completion retains the own-track encoder without flushing it while the source remains used, potentially withholding its final pictures indefinitely.
The source's recording or replay history can lack its final pictures until another play or eventual encoder release.
This can occur when: A one-shot clip ends on a pipelined hardware encoder while still on program or subscribed by a recording.

Whole-file import relies on unlimited catalog retention reaching every imported track; an importer-specific retention limit could evict the beginning before playback subscribes.
Initial playback and subsequent loops may skip the beginning despite requesting first-group decoding.
This can occur when: A clip contains more history than an imported track's normal retention window, particularly through the untested TS or FLV import paths.

ℹ️ No new issues. The merge of main and its source.rs conflict resolution are correct.
Reviewed changes
Merged origin/main at 88423f8, bringing broadcast-source playout sync (#38) and the recording mix picker (#41) onto the branch.
Resolved the only conflict, in source.rs, keeping both Feed/Driver field sets (starts for media, clock for broadcast) and routing main's play_audio bus channel through the branch's Driver::channel helper.
Confirmed Driver::channel constructs the same F32 bus Input main's inline code did, leaving the broadcast audio path behaviorally unchanged; the media playback path (Driver::media/play_clip/Own) is untouched by the merge.
- A media file's sound publishes its own Opus track through publish::Audio,
so an audio-only file's track goes live; a file without sound has no strip.
- The own pictures' track opens before the play's clock starts.
- Feed::play clears the held picture, and the engine sets the sources on
program before drawing, so a restart never shows the last play's end.
- The program's shown set includes mask sources; Health lists a source
whose picture fails to draw as failed.
- The media publish test holds the paused clock at each step, since a
decoder on its own thread (Linux) let it jump past the restart.

✅ No new issues found in c9c9ceb (merge of origin/main#40 plus the review-thread fixes).
What the new commits do, and why it holds
A media file's sound now publishes its own publish::Audio track, and Feed::strip() hides a soundless file, so Sources::plays/Health no longer treat a video-only file as a routed-but-unheard source. The earlier finding (an audio-only file's track stuck on starting) is resolved.
The source.rs conflict resolution keeps both #40's own tracks for microphones/system audio (Driver::listen/hear) and the media Sound/Own state; publishes() matches what Program::on_program and Health consider on program.
Feed::play clears the held picture before the driver hears it, and the engine now computes shown (including mask sources) and calls state.sources.set_on_program before drawing, so a restart never composes the previous play's end.
Program::source now carries audio as well as video into a replay target, with Feed::replay refusing a slowed sound-only take — consistent with the audio-only media case.
Remaining prior review (OpenAI) items — Play-after-Ended queued audio (#1) and ended/off-program/restart=false encoder reopen (#3) are unchanged, were assessed narrow and non-blocking in the prior Pullfrog review, and are refuted or tracked in the author's resolved threads. No re-raise.
Validation is reported in the PR body (just ci on c9c9ceb); this review was static (the moq/ submodule is not checked out here).
[P2] Preserve the own-audio tail at EOF and loop boundaries (rs/moq-scene/src/source.rs:1396–1410). Each play sets gap=true, so the next write reanchors the existing encoder, but natural EOF does not drain it first. Reanchor discards partial PCM and Opus lookahead: recordings and own-track listeners lose the last samples on each loop, and a later Play discards a non-looping clip's buffered tail. Preserve continuity across natural loops or drain the completed play before resetting; add decoded-tail coverage.
Of my earlier findings, the video-only health issue is fixed. The ended-restart delay queue remains; the held-frame-on-new-demand limitation remains but has been explicitly accepted as a design tradeoff. The additional own-track publishing otherwise fits the existing source model.
Verification: GitHub-only static review, including the pinned audio producer. I did not run builds or runtime tests.
Publish::set_on_program takes OnProgram, the sources shown and those
heard: a picture track encodes while a scene on air shows its source, a
sound track while the program mix plays it. A music bed heard but not
shown encodes its sound alone, as a microphone does.

…after its end takes a new channel
A natural loop no longer marks a gap on the sound's own track, which
dropped the codec's partial frame and lookahead each loop. A play after
the clip ended now resets the bus channel and marks the gap, as a
restart does.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Reply to the OpenAI review of c9c9ceb, fixed in 079b9af:
Own-audio tail at loop boundaries (P2): fixed for natural loops. Only a restart or a play after Ended sets Sound::gap, so a loop keeps the track's timeline and loses nothing.
Play after Ended: this now resets the bus channel and marks the gap, as a restart does.
The tail at a real end (end of file, then Ended): deferred, not fixed. It needs a drain that keeps the track open. moq-audio's encode::Producer has only finish, reanchor, and discontinuity (moq/rs/moq-audio/src/encode/producer.rs:326, :593, :608). I listed it under Follow-ups as a moq change.
Held frame after an off-program end: unchanged. moq_video::Frame is not Clone, as answered in the source.rs:1241 thread.
[P2] Preserve real time gaps across natural audio loops (rs/moq-scene/src/source.rs:1419). Keeping Sound.gap false preserves buffered audio but treats all loops as contiguous PCM. For a looping file with two seconds of video and one second of audio, the second audio segment arrives around 2s but the retained producer stamps it around 1s, since it advances by sample count and ignores subsequent timestamps. Own-track audio/video skew grows each loop. Preserve continuity only for contiguous input and represent interloop silence; add an unequal-duration regression.
The ended-restart delayed-bus issue is fixed, as is video-only health. Loop-tail preservation is improved, but terminal EOF tail draining remains explicitly deferred; the held-frame-on-new-demand limitation remains an accepted tradeoff.
Verification: GitHub-only static review including pinned audio producer semantics. I did not run tests or reproduce playback.

Reviewed changes
Split Publish::set_on_program into OnProgram { shown, heard }, so a media file's pictures encode while a scene on air shows it and its sound while the program mix plays it; every other own track still encodes while read.
Made State::shown() the one on-program set (placed items, the top layer, and Filter::Mask sources, resolved through clones), computed before compositor.render so a restarting media file is cleared in the same frame, and reused by Health and Program::on_program.
Kept a looping media file's sound on one bus channel and own-track timeline by moving the gap flag into Sound, set only on a restart or a play after Ended; a restart still drops the old channel first, so the cut-off play's queued audio does not lead the new one.
Merged origin/main (#37 guests and mix-minus) without touching the media path, and updated the README source-tracks wording plus the publish tests for the shown/heard split.
I traced the split across every source kind that publishes an own track: Video is only built for captures, replay, and media, and Audio only for microphones, system audio, and media, so nothing lost its use path; a mask source now holds one session while it shapes the program, as the PR documents. The natural-loop timeline change is right for contiguous loops; the unequal-duration drift it leaves is already tracked by the automated review on this head, so I have not re-anchored it.
…hat decodes to nothing
- A loop's next play starts where the last one ended, so loops keep exact
time, and its sound track marks a gap unless its sound starts right
where the last one ended: a loop whose sound is shorter than its
pictures keeps the silence between, rather than drifting earlier each
loop.
- A restart, or a play after the end, starts a new group on the
pictures' track, a cut to the clip's start.
- A clip that decodes to no picture or sound fails, rather than a loop
replaying it at once forever.
- The media publish tests walk the clip picture by picture, holding the
paused clock on what the driver shows, so they count on neither a
decoder's thread nor an encoder that skips pictures to hold its rate,
as openh264 on Linux does at 64x64.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The earlier unequal-duration loop timing finding is fixed by inspection: scheduled play ends and first-audio timing now distinguish real gaps, and a regression checks successive loop timestamps. No new actionable findings in this update.
The earlier terminal EOF tail drain remains explicitly deferred. Genuine inter-loop gaps also reanchor and can discard buffered tail; contiguous loops preserve it. The delayed-bus and video-only health fixes remain intact, and the held-frame-on-new-demand limitation remains an accepted tradeoff.
Verification: GitHub-only static review. I did not run tests or reproduce playback; the new regression checks timestamp gaps rather than decoded tail preservation.

Reviewed changes — reviewed the delta since the prior Pullfrog review at 079b9af (05ce757 plus the merge of main0f454c8).
Loop timing fix: anchored each loop at the previous play's end and reanchored the own audio track only when the boundary is not sample-contiguous, so unequal-duration clips keep their silence instead of drifting earlier each loop.
Empty-decode failure: made a play that decodes to no picture or sound fail with Error::Media instead of returning success, so a loop cannot spin instantly forever.
Restart keyframe: added publish::Video::cut and called it on a restart or a play after Ended, so the pictures' own track opens a new group at the clip's start.
Test hardening: reworked the media publish tests to walk shown pictures on the paused clock (pictures), added uneven.mkv with the loop-silence regression test, and made the timeline test tolerate openh264 frame skipping.
Main merge: merged main0f454c8 (#45), which touches quest files only; engine.rs is unchanged since the prior review.
The loop-boundary reanchor logic matches moq_audio::encode::Producer's anchor semantics: a contiguous boundary leaves gap=false so PTS advances by sample count, while a real silence sets gap=true so the next write reanchors at its due. Remaining open items (terminal EOF tail drain, ended/off-program encoder release) are the accepted, previously deferred ones.

Problem
The studio had no way to play a local video or audio file, such as an intro clip or a music bed. Stinger transitions also need a clip they can start on demand.
Approach
media::Clip(rs/moq-scene/src/media.rs) reads the whole file and finds its container from the first bytes. It imports the file throughmoq_mux::import::Containerinto a broadcast of its own, withmax_age(None)so no group goes stale behind the newest frame. moq-mux reads fragmented MP4, MKV/WebM, MPEG-TS, and FLV. A regular MP4 is refused at setup, and the error gives the ffmpeg remux that makes it readable. Anything else is refused with the list of what it reads.Driver::media(rs/moq-scene/src/source.rs) decodes the clip from its first group withmoq_video::decodeandmoq_audio::decode, the same options a replay uses. It paces each picture and sound on the program clock (kio::clock). The earlier of the first picture and the first sound is due at once. A play ends once its last sound has played for its samples and its last picture for as long as the one before it. Then the source loops, or holds its last picture, silent, asStatus::Ended. A loop's next play is anchored at the previous play's end, so loops keep exact time however long the decoders take to open. A clip that decodes to nothing fails rather than looping instantly.publish::Video, and the sound throughpublish::Audio(moq-dev/studio#40). The engine fillsheardfromSources::playsfor every source with sound. The pictures' track opens from the first decoded picture before a play's clock starts, so the encoder probe delays neither picture nor sound. Pictures are stamped on one timeline from when the source opened, so a loop or restart never runs the track backwards. A file with no sound has no strip once it opens (Feed::stripisNone), so no mix plays it and Health never counts it as heard.Feed::playrestarts a media source from its start at once. The engine computes the set once per frame inState::shown(placed items and masks, through clones), before drawing.Feed::playputs up a clear picture at once, so the frame a scene goes on program never shows where the last play ended. Health and the source tracks share that set.Ended(degraded) orFailed(unhealthy), counting a picture that fails to draw as failed. Round 3 (6063773): no findings.
Round 4 (bb25d32): no findings. This round reviewed the merge of main (moq-dev/studio#38 and moq-dev/studio#41). Its hand resolution kept both sides'
