fix(scene): browser sources on the CPU path paint in software - #49
On the CPU path, this build's CEF cannot load GL. Chromium walks its GPU fallback chain, and sometimes a fallback GPU process fails "Failed to create shared context for virtualization" and hangs until Chromium's GPU watchdog kills it (exit 133) about 4 s later. That delays the page's first paint and makes the browser tests slow and flaky (moq-dev/studio#8).
The fix also turned up a second problem: just render-sw was never on the CPU path. Lavapipe advertises VK_EXT_external_memory_dma_buf, so the studio asked CEF for shared textures. The frames only came back in memory because CEF's GPU process failed.
Approach
The helper's Start message now carries Raster::Gpu { render_node } or Raster::Cpu, replacing accelerated: bool plus a render node that only made sense with it.
Raster::Cpu passes --disable-gpu, as the quest's Plan decided. Chromium then rasterizes in software and never starts a GL GPU process.
Raster::Cpu also passes --enable-unsafe-swiftshader, so WebGL keeps working there on SwiftShader (below). a_webgl_page_draws checks that a page gets WebGL and WebGL2 contexts and that what it draws shows.
A software Vulkan device (wgpu::DeviceType::Cpu, such as lavapipe) now picks Raster::Cpu even when it can import DMA-BUFs. Its textures live in memory anyway, and on that device the GPU path could only reach the GPU fallback hang. import::supported moves into Helper::new as the shared field.
Impact
A browser source on the CPU path (a device that cannot import DMA-BUFs, or a software Vulkan device) renders its page in software, WebGL included, so WebGL pages run slower there. The README's Source frames section says so.
That WebGL runs on SwiftShader, which JITs page shaders in the GPU process. Chromium stopped falling back to it automatically in M139 for that reason, and gates it behind --enable-unsafe-swiftshader. A browser source runs pages its user picked, not arbitrary web content.
No change to the scene file, flags, or panels. The helper protocol is internal; the helper is always the studio's own executable, so there is no version skew.
Measurements
Done on the NixOS host under just render-sw's setup (lavapipe, one Xvfb for all runs), running a_click_reaches_the_page's test binary directly. Each run includes CEF's startup, the first paint, and the click. Main and this branch ran alternately, so both saw the same host load. A CI runner on the host kept the load average between 10 and 32.

Every watchdog kill on main added about 4 to 12 s. On pairs where main had no kill, the two builds were within 0.16 s on average. The branch's remaining spread follows the host load: at load 10, ten runs took 0.36 to 0.47 s.
The branch's logs have no GL or EGL errors at all. On main every run logs 8 to 10 failed EGL initializations.
A second A/B lost main's build to the host's build-cache eviction after 25 pairs: 5 of those 25 main runs had a watchdog kill, against 0 of 60 branch runs.
WebGL on the CPU path
Raised by the OpenAI, CodeRabbit, and pullfrog reviews: --disable-gpu alone might leave no WebGL at all. Measured on the NixOS host under just render-sw's setup (lavapipe, so the CPU path), with a_webgl_page_draws and the switches swapped in through a temporary, uncommitted patch:
Switches on the CPU path
WebGL and WebGL2 contexts
none (main's CPU path)
fail: ANGLE cannot dlopen libGL.so.1, the GPU process exits at initialization, no SwiftShader fallback
work, but logs "Automatic fallback to software WebGL has been deprecated", so it rides the path Chromium is removing
So on this host main's CPU path had no WebGL either; a GPU whose GL loads but cannot import DMA-BUFs would have had it, and 625a9e0 would have lost it. This head keeps it everywhere on the CPU path.
Startup stays deterministic. 100 alternating triples on one shared Xvfb, load average 2.3 to 7.4, every run timed from process start:

The only ERROR line in any run is WebGL's "GPU stall due to ReadPixels" performance note. The runs over 1 s (13 to 17 per row) came at a mean load of 6.3 against 5.0 for the rest, alike in every row.
No X display
With --disable-gpu alone and no DISPLAY, CEF still fails: ozone_platform_x11.cc: Missing X server or $DISPLAY, then "CEF failed to initialize".
Adding --ozone-platform=headless on the CPU path (a temporary, uncommitted patch) works with no display: a_click_reaches_the_page passed 10 of 10 runs, in 0.36 to 0.47 s. The whole browser suite gave the same results as under Xvfb: 5 passed, and a_crash_drops_only_its_source failed as it does on main (below).
Not adopted here. That quest's Plan asked only for this result to be recorded. Headless ozone has no system clipboard, so a page's Copy and Cut under Interact might not reach the desktop, and the GPU path's GPU process failed EGL under headless before. It is suggested as a follow-up.
just render-sw on the NixOS host at 16504e3 (the same tree but fix(scene): retire the replaced rendition cleanly in a flaky replacement-delay test #51): the moq-scene compositor and layer tests (31) and the studio engine and setup tests (4) pass. In the browser step, 6 of 7 pass, a_webgl_page_draws included. a_crash_drops_only_its_source fails at its 20 s budget, the same as on main (0f454c8, run twice with the same failure). That NixOS failure is already tracked in quest/m0/browser-first-crash.md.
Under nextest, the browser step's five passing tests took 0.9 to 4.9 s on the branch and 1.0 to 7.3 s on main, under load 5 to 15.
Choices made without asking
A software device takes the CPU path. The alternative was to keep lavapipe on the GPU path and fail fast there, but that would leave just render-sw hitting the hang the quest is about. A real GPU that imports DMA-BUFs is unaffected.
The render node rides inside Raster::Gpu, so --render-node-override and --disable-gpu cannot both be passed.
WebGL on SwiftShader on the CPU path (direction from the 2026-11-05 iterate round: keep WebGL if startup stays deterministic). Options were:
✅ --enable-unsafe-swiftshader beside --disable-gpu: WebGL works, startup measured deterministic. Cost: SwiftShader's JIT runs page shaders in the GPU process, and Chromium could drop the opt-in some day; a_webgl_page_draws in the nightly just render-sw would catch that.
No WebGL on the CPU path, documented: safer, but a GPU that cannot import DMA-BUFs loses WebGL it may have had.
--disable-gpu only on software devices: keeps hardware WebGL where GL loads, but brings back the GPU fallback hang wherever it does not.
Alternatives
Packaging GL and EGL for CEF: rejected in the quest's Plan (packaging and driver variance).
Raising the test budget: hides the hang.
Follow-ups
Browser sources without an X display: --ozone-platform=headless on the CPU path works without Xvfb (above). Before adopting it, check the clipboard under Interact and whether the GPU path can go headless too. If so, just render-sw can drop xvfb-run, and the helper would no longer need X under Wayland.
Review
Codex, gpt-6.1-sol, medium effort, via quest review --base origin/main (round 2).
Online reviews on 625a9e0: the OpenAI P2, CodeRabbit, and pullfrog findings on WebGL at host.rs:439 are fixed by the SwiftShader opt-in above. CodeRabbit's docstring-coverage warning is declined: the touched functions without a doc comment are on_before_command_line_processing, a CEF trait method inside wrap_app!, and the private host::serve, whose bodies changed by one line each.
On the CPU path, CEF could not load GL, and Chromium's GPU fallback could
hang until its watchdog killed it, delaying a page's first paint by 4 to 33
seconds. Pass --disable-gpu there, since the frames come back in memory
anyway, and carry the render node only with the GPU path.

Walkthrough
The browser start protocol now carries a raster mode instead of separate acceleration and render-node settings. The helper selects GPU rastering when the adapter is not a CPU device and supports Vulkan external-memory DMA-BUF with the cef feature enabled. Otherwise, it selects CPU rastering. Chromium receives a render-node override when GPU mode specifies one, or disable-gpu in CPU mode. The documentation now describes software rendering for browser sources on the CPU path and removes the prior deterministic-startup requirement and plan.

[P2] Preserve or explicitly document WebGL on the CPU path — rs/moq-scene/src/browser/host.rs:439: --disable-gpu without a software-GL opt-in can disable WebGL and WebGL2 entirely in the pinned Chromium, rather than merely making them slower as the README says. A GPU that cannot import DMA-BUFs could previously render WebGL into CPU pixels; its overlays can now fail to create a context. Please add a CPU-path WebGL context/paint test and either preserve support or document the loss. SwiftShader's unsafe opt-in has security implications and should not be enabled without evaluating them.
The explicit raster mode and moving capability selection into helper startup are otherwise a reasonable simplification. Verification: GitHub-only static review against pinned Chromium source; I did not run CEF, tests, or builds.

Important
Raster::Cpu appends --disable-gpu, which on Chromium 156 leaves WebGL unavailable instead of "slower" as the README, the Raster doc, and the PR's Impact claim. Decide whether to pass --enable-unsafe-swiftshader or document WebGL as unavailable.
Reviewed changes
Helper protocol — Start.accelerated plus Start.render_node became Start.raster: Raster, with Gpu { render_node } and Cpu (the default), so the render node and --disable-gpu cannot both be passed.
Helper startup — Shared.accelerated now derives from Raster::Gpu, HelperApp stores the variant, and only Raster::Cpu appends --disable-gpu.
CPU path selection — import::supported folded into Helper::new as shared, which now also excludes wgpu::DeviceType::Cpu, so lavapipe and other software devices take the CPU path.
Docs and quest — README's Source frames section notes software page rendering, and the completed quest/m0/cef-startup.md and its m0 index entry are removed.
`--disable-gpu` alone leaves the pinned Chromium no WebGL context at all, since
Chromium 139 dropped the automatic SwiftShader fallback. Opt into it on the CPU
path, and test that a page gets WebGL and WebGL2 contexts and draws with them.

WebGL on the CPU path — Raster::Cpu now appends --enable-unsafe-swiftshader beside --disable-gpu, so a page still gets WebGL and WebGL2 when the GPU path is blocked, rather than losing them.
Docs — the Raster::Cpu doc comment and README's Source frames section now say WebGL runs on SwiftShader in software instead of merely running slower.
Regression test — a_webgl_page_draws paints the page red unless both a WebGL2 and a WebGL context exist, clears WebGL2 green, and waits for the green to reach the preview; just render-sw runs it through binary(browser).
The change addresses the prior WebGL finding, and the PR body records the startup and WebGL measurements behind the SwiftShader opt-in.
Dropped the now-dangling Required link in quest/m0/cef-headless.md (planned in #53 against this quest) with quest check --fix in d93a142; quest-file only, so no review round.

Important
Merging main brought in quest/m0/cef-headless.md, whose ## Required still links the cef-startup quest this PR deletes, so the Quest check now fails at head.
Reviewed changes
Reviewed the delta since the prior pullfrog review at de3ad49: one merge of origin/main (4811cb8). The PR's own files are unchanged — git diff de3ad49 6cd5305 -- rs/moq-scene/src/browser rs/moq-studio/tests/browser.rs is empty, and the diff against the new base is still the same 9 files, 80/67.
Merged main — pulled in #46 (quit delivers the broadcast tail), #53 (headless browser quest; publish-independently moved to m2), and #51, with the PR's README and quest/m0/README.md edits preserved alongside main's changes.
New merge conflict surface — main's quest/m0/cef-headless.md names the deleted cef-startup quest as a prerequisite, which the quest lint rejects.
⚠️ The merged cef-headless quest requires a quest this PR deletes
quest/m0/cef-headless.md (new on main) lists [Deterministic browser source startup](/quest/m0/cef-startup.md) under ## Required. Since this PR deletes cef-startup.md, the Quest check fails with link does not resolve: /quest/m0/cef-startup.md and requires /quest/m0/cef-startup.md, which is not a quest document. The same check passed on de3ad49, so the failure is new at 6cd5305 and blocks merge.
Technical details
# Quest lint cannot resolve the deleted prerequisite## Affected sites-`quest/m0/cef-startup.md` — deleted by this PR.
-`quest/m0/cef-headless.md:32` — `- [Deterministic browser source startup](/quest/m0/cef-startup.md) - the \`--disable-gpu\` CPU path this builds on`, the only remaining reference to `cef-startup` in tracked files.
## Evidence-`Quest` check run `127345195204` on `6cd5305`:
`quest: quest/m0/cef-headless.md:32: link does not resolve: /quest/m0/cef-startup.md``quest: quest/m0/cef-headless.md:32: requires /quest/m0/cef-startup.md, which is not a quest document; make an outside condition its own quest`- The same `Quest` check succeeded on `de3ad49`.
## Required outcome- The quest lint (`just check`) passes at head.
## Suggested approach- Delete the `## Required` bullet at `quest/m0/cef-headless.md:32` in this PR: the CPU path it depended on now exists, so it is no longer an outside condition. Alternatively repoint it at a quest that still exists.
