Problem

The studio drew one canvas, so a creator streaming landscape and portrait at once needed two studios, each capturing and encoding every source again. Multiple canvases asks for several canvases composited at once from shared sources, each with its own layout, preview, and outputs.

Approach

The first slice: further canvases with shared sources, each publishing its own broadcast.

  • Scene graph (moq-scene): Collection::canvases holds further canvases by name (Extra: width, height, its own top layer). Each Scene gains canvases.<name>, its layout on that canvas. Layer becomes { canvas, scene }, so every item edit, paste, source removal, and guest take-off already works on any canvas. Draft::set_extra and Draft::remove_extra add, resize, and remove a canvas, the latter taking every layout on it, undoing whole. Every canvas shares the main canvas's frame rate.
  • Compositor: one Compositor draws every canvas from the same layers map, so a source's picture is uploaded once per frame however many canvases show it, and a canvas draws only the items it places. Preview and program scenes, and the transition, are shared: a cut or transition takes every canvas together. Effects no longer holds a canvas; each frame target carries its own, and the blend backdrop covers the largest canvas. Compositor::set_canvases replaces set_canvas; output(name) and outputs() expose each canvas's textures.
  • Engine: the program clock's per-canvas encode state moved into Line (ladder, probe, ending encoders), so the main canvas and each further canvas run the same resize and failure path. A further canvas gets a broadcast at <--broadcast>/<name> on the program clock, with a canvas size and half size following the shared bandwidth grant, and is ended when the collection drops it. Its catalog lists the main broadcast's Opus track by reference (broadcast = "../<main>", the main instance), so audio is encoded once. Stats splits per-canvas video (VideoStats) from the shared session count, grants, and audio.
  • UI: a canvas picker beside the preview chooses what Preview, Program, and Items show and edit (including Interact). The Output panel adds, resizes, and removes further canvases and shows each one's broadcast, encoder, and renditions, under the shared encoder session count.

Measurements

compositor::bench::sources_against_canvases (release, Apple M-series GPU via Metal; 1080p main plus 1080x1920 further canvases, each item a quarter canvas at half opacity, preview and program drawn and the GPU waited on per frame):

sources canvases every canvas places every source further canvases place 2
4 1 1.63 ms 1.63 ms
4 2 2.58 ms 2.38 ms
4 4 3.12 ms 2.06 ms
16 1 2.00 ms 2.01 ms
16 2 3.28 ms 1.97 ms
16 4 5.02 ms 2.08 ms
64 1 4.26 ms 4.13 ms
64 2 8.57 ms 4.74 ms
64 4 16.98 ms 4.93 ms

A sparse canvas costs about the same however many sources the collection has; cost grows with the items a canvas draws, not the source table.

Encoder load: engine::tests::a_further_canvas_publishes_its_own_broadcast checks a live 640x360 main canvas plus a 360x640 one hold 2 sessions (one canvas size each), the further canvas's half size opening only once watched, and 0 after stop. GPU copies per canvas are one exporter copy per encoded rendition, as before; the Output panel shows each canvas's copied, read-back, dropped, and encoded counts.

Impact

  • Scene file: [canvases.<name>] (width, height, top) adds a further canvas; a scene's canvases.<name> = [...] lists its items there, and is left out rather than empty (an empty one is refused). Additive: existing files load unchanged.
  • History file: an item change's layer is now { canvas?, scene? }; the top layer was "top" and is now {}. A history saved before this no longer loads its top-layer entries (unreleased, no migration).
  • Outputs: each further canvas publishes a broadcast at <--broadcast>/<name> with H.264 at its size and half size and the main broadcast's audio by reference. A canvas named like the viewer-feedback prefix (viewers) is refused while live.
  • Encoder sessions: each further canvas adds 1, 2 with its half size watched; the Output panel counts them.
  • Panels: a canvas picker beside Preview; the Output panel's canvases form and per-canvas stats.
  • API (moq-scene): Layer is a struct; Collection::items returns Option<&[Item]>; new Extra, Collection::canvas(name), Compositor::{set_canvases, output, outputs}, Output; Compositor::set_canvas is gone. No wire changes beyond the new broadcasts.

Choices made without asking

  • Every canvas shares the main canvas's frame rate: one program clock, one timeline.
  • Further canvases are linked to the main canvas's preview, program, and transition; unlinking is left in the quest.
  • Audio is listed by reference rather than encoded per canvas, saving an Opus encode and a bandwidth reservation per canvas.
  • Only the main canvas records and is graded by the Health panel.
  • A further canvas follows --on-demand as the main one does, so live and not on demand it holds its canvas-size session from the start.

Decisions

Settled by the maintainer on 2026-11-04:

  • ✅ Scene-file shape: further canvases sit beside the main one. The main canvas stays [canvas] and [[top]]; further ones are [canvases.<name>] with per-scene canvases.<name> layouts, so single-canvas files are unchanged. (Rejected: a uniform [[canvases]] list.)
  • ✅ Broadcast path: a further canvas publishes nested at <broadcast>/<name>, inside a token scoped to the broadcast. (Rejected: a sibling path, or a per-canvas path in the scene file.)

Alternatives

  • One Compositor per canvas: simpler per canvas, but each would take() a source's frames, so a source could not feed two canvases without a second decode or upload.
  • Encoding audio per canvas: costs an Opus encode, a thread, and a reservation per canvas for identical bytes.

Follow-ups

Recorded in the rewritten quest rather than new quests: unlinking with per-canvas transitions, recording and destinations picking a canvas, Health per canvas broadcast, and skipping the preview of a canvas no panel shows.

Validation

On macOS (Apple GPU, Metal): just ci passes at f3a4d2a (lint, both clippy feature sets, 222 tests). The GPU tests passed at ac3eaf0; the UI-only changes since touch nothing they run:

  • compositor::tests::* (30), including a_further_canvas_draws_its_own_layout and a_further_canvas_plays_keyframes_with_the_main_one.
  • engine::tests::the_program_*, including the_program_of_a_further_canvas_has_its_own_broadcast, and setup::tests::times_every_canvas, with openh264.

Review

Codex (quest review), gpt-6.1-sol, medium effort.

Online:

  • pullfrog (edit.rs:293): prune rewrote every scene's layouts without recording it. Fixed in b06b911 with Collection::edit_items; validate now refuses an empty layout.
  • CodeRabbit, 9 threads on 4063dd1, all answered and resolved:
    • Fixed in 0e212f0:
      • layers no longer looks up each scene by name.
      • Mask sources count as shown, for the on-program set and the stall check.
      • Scene-file canvases open their encoders at startup, before the sources.
      • layer() falls back to the main canvas when the shown one is gone.
      • Preview and program textures follow the shown canvas after the panels draw.
      • Canvas form rows are keyed by name.
      • Rendition grids are keyed per canvas.
      • The add form refuses viewers.
    • Declined, with evidence:
      • viewers in Collection::validate: a studio relay convention that moq-scene doesn't know.
      • A legacy "top" history shim: unreleased, and REVIEW.md's Not findings.
      • Blocking the program tick on a runtime canvas probe: fails loud instead of stalling drawing.
  • OpenAI (P3, ui.rs:195-198): the canvas picker changed what Preview sized while the textures followed after the dock, stretching one frame. Fixed in aa11ae1 (a pick applies from the next frame) and f3a4d2a (size snapshotted with the textures); answered in a PR comment.
  • feat(scene): a media file source that loops or plays on demand #44 merge: main's new State::shown keeps its signature but iterates every canvas, so a media source on a further canvas goes on program, and restarts, with that canvas's scene.

Explain Change →

No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.

Walkthrough

The change adds named canvases with independent dimensions, top layers, and scene layouts. The compositor renders preview and program outputs for each canvas and applies shared scene transitions. The studio engine manages per-canvas broadcasts, encoders, and video statistics. Studio panels can select, add, resize, and remove canvases. The README documents canvas configuration, panel controls, and encoder sessions.

Merge Risk: Low · up to f3a4d

The change adds multiple canvases, each with its own broadcast, and the earlier UI and engine concerns are fixed at the current head. One remaining gap is a test that would not catch the audio reference carrying the wrong broadcast instance, and it does not affect runtime behavior. Merge risk is low.

Reviewed commit: 7ec068e

  • [P2] Preserve reversible scene state when pruning empty layouts (rs/moq-scene/src/edit.rs:292–293). An item edit prunes empty canvas layouts globally without recording that mutation. Load a valid scene with canvases.tall = [], rename it, toggle a main-canvas item's visibility, then undo twice: the item undo succeeds, but undoing the rename fails with scene 0 changed because its saved whole-scene snapshot still contains the empty layout. Reload also drops that rename and older history. Normalize empty layouts consistently at ingress, or preserve them in reversible edits; add this sequence as a regression.

The shared source ownership and per-canvas encoding direction fits the existing compositor. Verification: GitHub-only static review; no builds or GPU tests run.

Important

One undo regression when a scene file holds an empty canvas layout; the repro and fix direction are inline.

Reviewed changes — Read the full diff at 7ec068e (12 files) for further canvases that share sources but publish a broadcast each.

  • Scene graph — Collection::canvases adds Extra canvases; scenes gain per-canvas layouts and canvases gain their own top layers, while Layer becomes { canvas, scene } so the existing item, clip, and edit machinery works on any canvas.
  • Compositor — One source upload feeds every canvas; the shared Effects fits the largest canvas, each Output keeps its own textures and canvas, and every draw places against that canvas's own size and layout.
  • Engine — Each drawn further canvas gets a Line owning its probe and encode ladder; run_program times all canvases together and starts or ends a broadcast at <main>/<name>, listing the main Opus track by relative reference so audio is encoded once.
  • Stats, UI, docs — Stats reports per-canvas video beside shared sessions/grants/audio; the Output panel adds, resizes, and removes canvases and shows each one's state, with view selection for Preview, Program, and Items; README and the quest are updated alongside.

Reviewed from source; this checkout has no moq/ submodule and no quest context, so I did not build or run tests.

✅ No new issues found.

Reviewed changes — Re-reviewed the delta since the prior pullfrog review at 7ec068e: the root fix for the empty-layout undo regression, its tests, and the merges of main (#40, #37).

  • Undo-safe layout edits — Collection::edit_items replaces items_mut + prune and touches only the edited layer, dropping a further-canvas layout only when it becomes empty (including after a failed splice).
  • Empty layouts refused — Collection::validate rejects a scene layout with no items and from_toml validates on load, so an empty layout can no longer enter a Change::Scene snapshot; README says to leave it out instead.
  • Regression tests — emptying_a_layout_keeps_earlier_scene_edits_undoable covers the rename, empty, and undo sequence, and the collection test now covers the refused empty layout.
  • Build fix — the tests/browser.rs Scene literal uses ..Scene::new("Main") so it compiles against the added canvases field.

The prior inline thread at edit.rs:293 is addressed and resolved.

Give the further canvas a picture that the test can distinguish from the main program.

The red helper accepts any frame with the expected size and a red center pixel. The main canvas and the tall canvas both render red. If the tall broadcast carried a 360x640 picture of the main program, the helper would accept it. The test would not detect that output.

Give tall a color or layout that differs from the main program. Then assert that value at the center of the 360x640 frame, or assert another pixel that only tall's layout produces.

Assert the main broadcast's instance, not only that one is set.

Line 2718 passes for any Some value. The further canvas announces its own broadcast with a fresh moq_net::Instance::random(). A change that assigned that instance to audio.instance would still pass this test. Compare audio.instance with the main broadcast's instance, which Extras receives as instance and assigns to each listed audio rendition.

The accessor for that value from this test is not established here, so the exact edit is left to the author.

Add a named-canvas case to the interaction tests.

Every hit-test assertion in interact.rs passes None for the canvas. This includes the page_at calls at lines 613 and 623 and the update call in frame at line 674. A change that ignores the canvas argument in update or page_at still passes these tests.

Sample the right half of the further canvas in its layout test.

The tall closure reads only column x=1 of the 4-pixel-wide further canvas. Both layout rects span the full width, so a layout that covers only x=0..1 would still pass every assertion. Sample x=3 as well, and expect the same value at each state.

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

A line's new probe waits only for that line's ending threads. A newly created line does not wait for encoders retained in run_program's retired list, so replacing or quickly restoring a canvas can probe while its predecessor still holds hardware sessions.

The new canvas can settle into a session-exhaustion failure even after the old encoder releases the session, requiring another canvas change to recover.

This can occur when: Remove a canvas and quickly undo its removal, or replace it with another canvas, before the retired encoder has drained.

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Shutdown converts extra lines into Ended values while discarding their Broadcast owners. Broadcast::drop closes each publication before Ended::join waits for queued frames to finish, unlike the main publication, which remains owned by Program.

Further-canvas viewers may receive an aborted or prematurely closed stream and lose the final frames despite the shutdown contract promising encoder draining.

This can occur when: Stop the studio while a further canvas is actively encoding or has pending frames.

Reviewed changes — Re-reviewed the delta since the prior pullfrog review: the merge of main's keyframes (#43), adapted to per-canvas layouts.

  • Keyframes per canvas — Item::settled/posed compute against the canvas's own since, and each Output plays its canvas's items from the shared preview/program clock. The prepared cache is keyed by (Place, usize, Settled), so the same source can be drawn at different keyframe times on different canvases.
  • Shared sources, per-canvas timing — a further canvas still renders the single source upload and Effects, but reads its own layout and its own scene's keyframes; a_further_canvas_plays_keyframes_with_the_main_one covers this.
  • Top-layer refusal generalized — Collection::validate now refuses keyframes on the top layer of any canvas, not just main, and the existing refuses_keyframes_it_cannot_play test still passes.
  • Interaction and editing — hit testing and item posing recompute slot/place for the selected canvas from preview_since; the interaction tests exercise further-canvas paging.
  • Docs — README and module docs describe keyframes starting when a scene goes on program, per canvas.

All of main's keyframe tests and helpers are present on the branch; the only removals in the merge are the expected Layer::Top → Layer::top() and per-output draw.scene adaptations. CodeRabbit's 9 comments at 2fd71b6 are untouched by this delta and are not re-raised here.

Reviewed from source; this checkout has no moq/ submodule, so I did not build or run tests (just ci was reported passing at 6fa80d5).

Automated review by review (OpenAI)

Reviewed commit: 4063dd1

No new actionable findings in the multi-canvas/keyframe integration. The earlier empty-layout undo fix remains intact, as do the equal-time cache distinction and displayed-preview hit-test timing fixes from #43. Separate canvas cache keys and shared animation timing fit the existing compositor model.

Verification: GitHub-only static review of the merge and relevant paths/tests. I did not run builds, GPU tests or benchmarks; hosted Check was running when inspected.

Reviewed commit: ac3eaf0

[P3] Keep canvas geometry and texture on the same selection — rs/moq-studio/src/ui.rs:195–198. Preview captures dimensions before its picker changes the selected canvas, while post-dock registration binds the new texture. Switching landscape to portrait therefore stretches the new output into the old aspect ratio for one frame. Apply the selection next frame or otherwise use the same selection for geometry and texture.

The earlier undo and keyframe fixes remain intact, as does #44's loop-gap fix. The newer startup ordering and mask tracking fit the multi-canvas design. Verification: GitHub-only static review; no GPU tests, builds or benchmarks run.

Reviewed changes — Re-reviewed the delta since the prior pullfrog review at 4063dd1: the fix commit 0e212f0 and the merge of main (#44).

  • Startup encoders — Engine::start awaits Extras::open, probing and opening each further canvas's canvas-size encoder before the program clock starts, mirroring the main canvas; a failure is non-fatal and surfaces on that canvas.
  • Mask sources on program — State::shown unions every canvas's scene and top with the sources each Filter::Mask reads, so masked cameras are encoded and their picture stalls detected; both run_program and the stall check share it.
  • Canvas selection — Collection::canvases excludes the main canvas and Collection::canvas(Some(name)) matches Compositor::Output::canvas(), so the UI's view neither re-probes nor publishes the main canvas twice; Panels::layer drops a view the collection no longer has.
  • Stats and widget ids — Stats::canvases inserts and removes beside each Line, canvas rows are push_id'd by name, and renditions is keyed by Option<&str> so a canvas named main keeps its own grid.
  • Merge resolution — the main merge keeps #44's media-file restart path and the stopped-health code while State::shown feeds both the on-program set and the stall check.

OpenAI's P3 at this head (Preview paints one frame with the previous canvas's aspect when the picker changes canvas, because view() captures dimensions before pick_view while the moved follow rebinds the new texture after the dock) is a real but minor residual; it was already surfaced in that review, so it is not re-raised here.

Reviewed from source; this checkout has no moq/ submodule, so I did not build or run tests.

On the OpenAI P3 at ui.rs:195-198, where Preview sized itself by a canvas picked mid-frame while the textures registered after the dock were already the new canvas's: agreed and fixed.

  • aa11ae1: the canvas picker writes Panels::picked. Studio::ui applies it at the start of the next frame, along with dropping a shown canvas the collection no longer has, then registers that canvas's textures before any panel draws.
  • f3a4d2a: the local Codex review caught the same mismatch when an undo or removal lands mid-frame. Studio::ui now snapshots the shown output's size into Panels::drawn when it registers the textures, and Preview, Program, and Items size and map by it for the whole frame.

just ci passes (222 tests), and the local Codex review of f3a4d2a found nothing.

Reviewed changes — Re-reviewed the delta since the prior pullfrog review at ac3eaf0: commits aa11ae1 and f3a4d2a, both in rs/moq-studio/src/ui.rs, which fix the one-frame canvas/aspect mismatch after a picker change.

  • Pick applied next frame — Panels::picked records the picker's choice and Studio::ui applies it at the top of the following frame, so view, the layer Items edits, and the registered textures never disagree within a frame.
  • Size captured with the textures — Studio::ui resolves the shown Output (falling back to the main canvas when the collection no longer has the view) and stores Output::canvas() in Panels::drawn; Preview, Program, and Items size and paint from that snapshot instead of re-reading the collection mid-frame.
  • Removal cleanup at frame start — the removed-canvas fallback moved out of view() and CanvasAction::Remove into the single start-of-frame check, and layer() still filters a view the collection lacks.

set_canvases runs inside State::adopt under the same lock as the edit or reload, so an Output exists for every canvas in collection.canvases and its textures always match its Canvas; Registered keeps a texture clone, so a mid-frame resize stays coherent until the next frame. OpenAI's P3 at ac3eaf0 is addressed.

Reviewed from source; this checkout has no moq/ submodule, so I did not build or run tests.
