Summary

Dash Core v24 changes the masternode JSON that rpc-json deserializes (protx listdiff, masternode status, masternodelist, protx info/diff). The current types reject or misread it. Dash Platform's Drive feeds protx listdiff straight into block processing, so a deserialization error there fails the block on every node.

Behaviour of Core v24.0.0-rc.1 this PR handles:

  • service, platformP2PPort, platformHTTPPort are only printed with -deprecatedrpc=service. Nested addresses is always printed.
  • Extended-address (v3) masternodes:
    • The core address may be Tor or I2P, e.g. service: "x.onion:9999".
    • An Evo with an empty network address prints platform ports -1.
    • Platform ports live only in addresses.
  • Shared masternodes (Regular only) have no ownerAddress, no payoutAddress and no collateralAddress. They carry shares instead.
  • Non-shared v3 masternodes print payouts: [{address, script, reward}] instead of payoutAddress.
  • Diffs print addresses per changed purpose:
    • A legacy Evo's port-only change uses a 255.255.255.255:<port> host.
    • Emptied addresses are left out, and only service is printed.

Changes

  1. fix(rpc-json)!: re-land nested platform addresses (fix(rpc-json)!: resolve Core 23 nested platform addresses (breaking field/accessor renames) #808, reverted by revert(rpc-json)!: resolve Core 23 nested platform addresses (breaking field/accessor renames) #814).
    • MasternodeAddresses, and addresses on DMNState and DMNStateDiff.
    • Flat ports renamed to legacy_platform_*_port.
    • platform_{p2p,http}_address() accessors.
  2. fix(rpc-json): tolerate Core v24 network fields.
    • A Tor (.onion) or I2P (.i2p) service reads as [::]:0, the value Core prints for an empty network address. Any other unparseable value is still an error.
    • Negative platform ports read as None.
    • deserialize_u32_opt no longer truncates, and it accepts null.
  3. fix(rpc-json)!: shared and multi-payout masternodes.
    • owner_address, payout_address and collateral_address (on MasternodeListItem and ProTxInfo) become Option<[u8; 20]>.
    • New DMNPayout { address, script, reward }, and payouts on DMNState and DMNStateDiff.
    • apply_diff and compare_to_newer_dmn_state handle payouts: setting one of payouts/payout_address clears the other, which mirrors Core clearing scriptPayout on the move to v3.
  4. fix(rpc-json): apply Core's partial addresses diffs per purpose, instead of replacing the whole object.
    • The accessors fall back to the flat legacy port as-is, zero included, whenever the nested object has no entry for that purpose. Core 23 and 24 print a revoked legacy Evo as addresses: {} plus flat ports, and consumers that read the flat ports (Platform's validator sets) must keep seeing the same values.

Shapes are taken from rc.1's ToJson (core_write.cpp, dmnstate.cpp, rpc/evo.cpp, providertx_util.cpp). The branch is based on the rev Dash Platform v4.2 pins (e4208c90). rpc-json is identical on dev, and the commits cherry-pick onto dev cleanly.

Breaking changes

  • DMNState.owner_address / payout_address are now Option<[u8; 20]>.
  • MasternodeListItem.collateral_address / ProTxInfo.collateral_address are now Option<[u8; 20]>. ProTxInfo.collateral_address also changes meaning: it now holds the decoded 20-byte hash instead of the address string's bytes.
  • platform_p2p_port / platform_http_port are renamed to legacy_platform_*_port and deprecated in favour of the accessors.
  • New public fields: payouts, addresses.

Testing

  • cargo test -p dashcore-rpc-json: 46 passed (16 existing, 30 new). Each fix was written test-first and shown failing on its parent commit; the red → green evidence is in each commit message.
  • New fixtures follow rc.1 output: a shared masternode; v3 with 1 and 2 payouts; an empty-address v3 Evo (-1 ports); Tor, I2P, CJDNS and IPv6 primaries; a legacy → v3 diff; a v3 port-only diff; partial, placeholder and emptied addresses diffs; batching independence for legacy Evos; compare → apply round-trips.
  • The existing Core 23 listdiff fixture is unchanged.
  • cargo clippy -p dashcore-rpc-json --all-targets -- -D warnings, cargo fmt --check, rustdoc -D warnings and cargo check --workspace --all-targets are all clean.
  • Reviewed by independent agents for consensus safety, test quality and API fit. Validator-set membership, as computed from the flat ports, matched the old parser in all 51,233 modelled Core diff sequences and batchings.

Known limitations (unchanged behaviour, not fixed here)

  • After an extended-address Evo's revocation, the flat ports keep their last value, while Core's full state prints -1. Nulling them would drop revoked legacy Evos that consumers reading the flat ports keep.
  • Already present before this PR:
    • deserialize_outpoint can panic on malformed input.
    • apply_diff resets pose_revived_height on every diff.
    • operatorPayoutAddress isn't parsed in diffs.
    • ProTxInfo.operator_reward is a u32, but Core prints a double.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Compatibility
    • Masternode RPC data supports Core’s nested address and payout formats while retaining compatibility with legacy platform ports.
    • Collateral and owner addresses may be absent, and payout information can include one or multiple payouts.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Platform endpoint addresses handle nested and legacy data consistently, including fallback behavior for missing or invalid ports.
    • Valid Tor and I2P service addresses are accepted during RPC deserialization; other invalid service addresses remain errors.
    • Optional port values treat null and negative values as absent and reject values outside the supported range.

Re-applies #808, which #814 reverted (this reverts commit
ceee4a9). Masternode entries and diffs
parse the nested `addresses` object (`MasternodeAddresses { core_p2p,
platform_p2p, platform_https }`), the top-level platform ports become the
deprecated `legacy_platform_{p2p,http}_port`, and
`platform_{p2p,http}_address()` resolve the nested entry first and fall
back to the legacy port paired with the service IP.

Dash Core v24 reports an ExtAddr Evo's platform ports only in
`addresses` (the scalar fields stay 0), so a port-only ProUpServTx is
visible nowhere else.

BREAKING CHANGE: DMNState/DMNStateDiff `platform_{p2p,http}_port` are
renamed to `legacy_platform_{p2p,http}_port` and deprecated; both types
gain an `addresses` field.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Dash Core v24 prints `service` as the primary core P2P entry, which may
be a Tor or I2P address, and prints both platform ports as -1 for an
extended-address Evo with no addresses. A Tor/I2P service failed the
whole `protx listdiff`, `masternodelist json`, `masternode status` or
`protx diff` response; a -1 port failed `protx listdiff`,
`masternodelist json` and `masternode status` (`protx diff` has no
platform P2P port and its entries are not parsed for ports).

- `service` (DMNState, DMNStateDiff, MasternodeStatus,
QuorumMasternodeListItem) and `address` (Masternode) whose host is a
Tor (`.onion`) or I2P (`.i2p`) address reads as `[::]:0`, the value
Core prints for a masternode without an address. IP services, CJDNS
included, are kept; any other value that is not an `ip:port` is still
an error. The fields stay `SocketAddr`; where the type has an
`addresses` object the entry remains readable there. Serialization is
  unchanged.
- `platformP2PPort` / `platformHTTPPort` (DMNState, DMNStateDiff,
Masternode) parse as signed: a negative value or `null` reads as
`None`, a value above `u32::MAX` is an error instead of wrapping.

Red -> green: the new tests fail on the parent commit with
`invalid socket address syntax` (Tor/I2P service in DMNState, diff,
MasternodeStatus, QuorumMasternodeListItem) and
`invalid value: integer `-1`, expected u32` (DMNState, diff,
masternodelist entry). With a catch-all fallback, a malformed service
such as "192.0.2.1" silently read as `[::]:0`, a port of 2^32 + 26656
wrapped to 26656 and a `null` port failed with
`invalid type: null, expected i64`; the tests pinning those fail against
that version and pass after. The port-only extended-address diff test is
a guard and already passes with the nested addresses.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Dash Core v24 omits `ownerAddress`, `payoutAddress` and
`collateralAddress` for a shared masternode (it prints `shares`
instead), and prints a `payouts` list instead of `payoutAddress` for
every extended-address (version 3) masternode, including a legacy one
raised to version 3. The required fields failed the whole listdiff.

- DMNState.owner_address and payout_address become Option<[u8; 20]>.
  MasternodeListItem.collateral_address and ProTxInfo.collateral_address
become Option<[u8; 20]>; ProTxInfo previously held the address string
bytes and now holds the decoded hash, like MasternodeListItem. They are
also None when Core runs without -txindex.
- New DMNPayout { address, script, reward } and
`payouts: Option<Vec<DMNPayout>>` on DMNState and DMNStateDiff.
`address` is the key or script hash; `script` (P2PKH or P2SH) tells
  them apart. `shares`, `earlyPeriodBlocks`, `earlyPenalty` and
  `version` are not modelled.
- apply_diff: a diff's `payouts` replaces `payout_address` and vice
versa, so at most one of them is set, matching Core's output.
compare_to_newer_dmn_state emits `payouts` changes and documents the
Some -> None transitions a diff cannot express.

Red -> green: on the parent commit the rc.1 fixtures fail with
`missing field `ownerAddress`` (shared masternode in the listdiff and
in protx info) and `missing field `payoutAddress`` (extended-address
state in the listdiff and in masternode status), and the assertions on
the new API (including DMNPayout.script) do not compile; all rpc-json
tests pass after. The v23 `deserialize_mn_listdiff` fixture is unchanged
and still passes.

BREAKING CHANGE: DMNState.owner_address/payout_address,
MasternodeListItem.collateral_address and ProTxInfo.collateral_address
are now Option<[u8; 20]>; DMNState and DMNStateDiff gain a `payouts`
field.

Core's diff emitter (CDeterministicMNStateDiff::ToJson, unchanged since
v23.0.0) prints `addresses` per changed field, not as a whole, but
apply_diff replaced the stored object with it:
- a changed core address prints `service` and `core_p2p` only, which
dropped a legacy Evo's platform entries that the full state renders
  on the primary address (GetNetInfoWithLegacyFields);
- a legacy Evo's port-only change prints `255.255.255.255:<port>`,
  which became the stored platform host;
- emptied addresses (revocation, operator change) print `service` and
no `addresses`, so the old addresses stayed.
The resulting state depended on how Core batched changes into diffs.

apply_diff now merges per purpose: a changed core address moves a
legacy Evo's platform entries onto it, the placeholder host resolves to
the primary core address (dropped when that is unknown, leaving the
flat port the diff also prints), no core address means no platform
entries, and `service` without `addresses` empties them. A state
without nested addresses (older Core, or rebuilt from stored ports)
keeps resolving through the legacy fallback.

The platform address accessors fall back to the flat legacy port as-is,
zero included, whenever the nested object has no valid entry for the
purpose, `addresses: {}` included: that is how Core 23 and 24 print a
revoked legacy Evo, and consumers that read the flat ports keep it.
Flat ports keep what Core's diff prints, so an extended-address Evo's
revocation leaves them at their last value. Which value that is can
still depend on how Core batched the changes before the reset, since
the diff doesn't say whether the Evo was extended-address when it was
reset; a legacy Evo's resolved addresses no longer depend on batching.
Nulling the flat ports on a reset would instead drop a revoked legacy
Evo that consumers reading the flat ports (Dash Platform's validator
sets) keep, so they are left as printed.

Red -> green: on the parent commit, applying Core-shaped diffs to
Core's full state of the same Evo diverges from the full state Core
prints next. The core-address diff leaves `addresses` as {core_p2p}
only. The port-only diff resolves the platform P2P host to
"255.255.255.255". The two batchings give different states. Both
revocation diffs leave the old addresses in place, and a zero legacy
port resolves to None. All pass after. The reloaded-state test is a
guard and passes before and after.

Walkthrough

Masternode RPC models now accept nested addresses, optional collateral and owner fields, and payout lists. Endpoint accessors resolve nested addresses and legacy ports. Diff conversion, comparison, and application carry these fields and merge or clear address state. Service and port deserialization handle privacy-network values and invalid inputs.

Masternode RPC Models and Diffs

Layer / File(s) Summary
RPC models and endpoint parsing
rpc-json/src/lib.rs
Masternode RPC models represent nested addresses and optional address fields. Endpoint accessors resolve nested platform addresses first and use legacy ports as fallback. Deserialization handles privacy-network services and validates ports and hosts.
Diff representation and comparison
rpc-json/src/lib.rs
Diff models and conversions carry payout lists, nested addresses, and legacy ports. Diff comparison tracks changes to these fields and emits corresponding diff values.
Diff application and validation
rpc-json/src/lib.rs
Applying a diff updates payout and address state, including address merging and clearing. Tests cover endpoint resolution, validation, optional fields, payout changes, and compare/apply behavior.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 0a7d5

Masternode platform endpoints can be lost or become stale after successive partial address updates. A stored payout cannot be read back from its serialized form. Comparing two masternode states and applying the result does not reproduce the newer state. These issues affect state that Drive consumes during block processing, so they should be resolved before merge.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 0a7d5

Snapshot comparison and diff application do not agree when an individual platform endpoint is cleared, potentially retaining an obsolete destination during reconfiguration or recovery. Security impact depends on downstream endpoint validation, which could not be established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · observed: The new snapshot-to-diff producer and address-merge consumer disagree on purpose-specific clearing. With core_p2p still populated, changing platform_https from a populated array to an empty array produces a diff that retains or remaps the old HTTPS endpoint instead of removing it. This violates the comparison contract and can leave stale destinations visible to consumers during reconfiguration or snapshot-based recovery. Actual downstream use and security consequences remain unverified.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated scope is typed masternode state and endpoint values exposed by this library. Effects could propagate to consumers using comparison, application, or address accessors, but the evidence does not establish affected production services, environments, or the maximum independently attackable scope.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The wire-to-model boundary still rejects malformed supplied address payloads and oversized nonnegative optional integers. Endpoint accessors require a nonempty, unambiguous host and an in-range port, but those syntax checks do not establish destination identity or authorization.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — A consumer relying on snapshot comparison to reconcile endpoint removal cannot assume that the resulting state equals the newer snapshot. Repeating the same represented update does not repair the retained endpoint; recovery through authoritative replacement and downstream destination checks remains outside the inspected evidence.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Separate full-snapshot replacement from partial wire-diff merging, or represent purpose-specific unchanged, set, and clear operations explicitly. Consumers should independently enforce masternode eligibility and destination policy rather than treating a resolved endpoint as authorization.

…llback

The platform address accessors return the nested entry's host, which
Core prints bracketed for IPv6 (`[2001:db8::4]`), or fall back to the
legacy port paired with `service.ip()`, which formatted IPv6 without
brackets (`2001:db8::4`). A consumer joining host and port then got an
ambiguous `2001:db8::4:26656` that does not parse as a socket address,
depending only on which source answered. The fallback now brackets an
IPv6 node IP; IPv4 is unchanged.

Test would have caught this: legacy_fallback_brackets_an_ipv6_host_like_the_nested_path
fails before the fix (host "2001:db8::4"), and the revoked legacy Evo
assertions expected "::"; all pass after.

@shumkov shumkov changed the title feat(rpc-json)!: parse Core v24 masternode lists (shared/multi-payout masternodes, nested addresses) feat(rpc-json)!: parse Core v24 masternode lists Oct 1, 2026
…ation

The flat `platformP2PPort` / `platformHTTPPort` fields are not on their
way out yet: a legacy evonode first listed with an empty network
address, and revived later with unchanged ports, has its platform ports
nowhere else in Core's JSON. Consumers that must agree with readers of
these fields (Dash Platform's validator sets) still fall back to them,
so `#[deprecated]` only forced `#[allow(deprecated)]` onto every
legitimate read. Drop the attribute and document the fields as Core's
flat fields, printed with `-deprecatedrpc=service`, behind the
`platform_{p2p,http}_address()` accessors that read `addresses` first.

No behaviour change.

This reverts commit 02554de.

The flat platformP2PPort / platformHTTPPort fields are on their way out:
consumers should read the nested `addresses` through the
platform_{p2p,http}_address() accessors, and the flat fields remain only
as a fallback until Core prints every evonode's platform ports in
`addresses` and the -deprecatedrpc=service flag is dropped. The
deprecation says exactly that; the few remaining reads carry
`#[allow(deprecated)]`.

@ZocoLini deprecated on purpose: Dash Platform still needs these flat fields as a fallback until its next protocol version (validator sets must match older Drive versions that read them). They'll be removed then, tracked in dashpay/platform#5254.

Make DMNPayout serialization readable by its deserializer.

DMNPayout derives Serialize, but address: [u8; 20] serializes as a numeric array. deserialize_address requires an address string. Serializing a parsed payout and deserializing it therefore fails, including when a caller stores a payout as JSON. Accept the serialized hash array as well as Core’s address string, or provide a matching serializer. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Preserve platform entries when the core address is still unknown.

If addresses starts as None, a platform-only diff can create Some(MasternodeAddresses) with an empty core_p2p; dmn_state_apply_diff_propagates_addresses establishes that state. On the next platform-only diff, current_known is true, so this branch discards both the existing entries and the new entries. An accessor can then lose its platform endpoint or fall back to a stale flat port. Clear the address set only when the diff establishes that the core address was emptied, not merely because an earlier partial diff left core_p2p unknown. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Update the address-clearing condition near

Distinguish a full address snapshot from a partial Core diff.

If older.addresses.platform_p2p has an entry and newer.addresses.platform_p2p is empty, comparison puts the newer address set in the diff. apply_diff treats that empty array as “purpose unchanged” and retains the old entry. The documented compare-then-apply operation therefore does not produce newer. Give comparison-generated diffs a way to replace or explicitly clear each purpose without changing how partial Core diffs merge. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Update the address comparison that sets `has_diff` and clones `newer.addresses`
so comparison-generated diffs can explicitly replace or clear each address
purpose, including an empty `platform_p2p`. Update `apply_diff` to honor that
explicit state while preserving the existing merge behavior for partial Core
diffs.

@ZocoLini There are 2 PRs ready for review.

One note: Platform v4.2 pins 40268cc0 from this branch rather than dev, since it can't take the newer dev changes (secp256k1 0.33, BLS backend) before the release. I pushed integration/v4.2-core-v24 at 40268cc0 to keep it fetchable, so feel free to squash-merge and let this branch be auto-deleted.
