Breaking changes

key-wallet

  • New required method WalletInfoInterface::truncate_above(height) -> Result<Truncation, Error>. It changes nothing and fails with the new Error::TruncateBelowChainLock when height is below the wallet's applied ChainLock.

key-wallet-manager

  • New required method WalletInterface::truncate_above(height) -> Result<(), WalletError>, with no default implementation.
  • New variants WalletEvent::ChainTruncated and WalletError::TruncateBelowChainLock.

dash-spv

  • MetadataStorage::load_metadata<T: DeserializeOwned> returns the deserialized JSON value instead of raw bytes.
  • Truncating segmented storage below its start height clears it instead of returning an error.

dash-spv-ffi

  • FFIWalletEventCallbacks has a new on_chain_truncated field, so its layout changes and C/Swift callers must rebuild.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Wallets now recover from chain forks by removing transactions from the replaced branch and restoring affected funds when appropriate. InstantSend-locked transactions can remain in the wallet as unconfirmed.
    • Wallet event integrations can receive details about removed transactions, retained unconfirmed transactions, restored funds, and updated balances after a chain truncation.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Fork recovery now respects ChainLocks and will not truncate finalized wallet history.
    • When a fork replaces a spend, the wallet restores the affected funds and updates its balance.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Fork recovery now truncates wallet state before stored chain data. Wallet truncation restores eligible spent outputs, retains InstantSend-locked transactions as unconfirmed, and emits a ChainTruncated event. Fork detection respects the stored ChainLock height. The FFI exposes an optional callback for truncation events.

Changes

Fork recovery

Layer / File(s) Summary
Wallet state truncation
key-wallet/src/managed_account/*, key-wallet/src/wallet/managed_wallet_info/*, key-wallet/src/transaction_checking/*, key-wallet/src/utxo.rs, key-wallet/src/error.rs, key-wallet/src/tests/*
Wallet truncation removes records above the retained height, restores eligible spent outputs, and retains InstantSend-locked transactions as unconfirmed. It rejects truncation below an applied ChainLock. Tests cover output restoration, observed spends, and truncation behavior.
Wallet manager truncation events
key-wallet-manager/src/events.rs, key-wallet-manager/src/error.rs, key-wallet-manager/src/process_block.rs, key-wallet-manager/src/wallet_interface.rs, key-wallet-manager/src/test_utils/mock_wallet.rs, key-wallet-manager/src/event_tests.rs, key-wallet-ffi/src/error.rs
The wallet manager checks ChainLock constraints, truncates affected wallets, and emits ChainTruncated with removed and unconfirmed transaction IDs, restored outpoints, and balances. The FFI error mapping classifies ChainLock truncation errors as InvalidState.
Typed metadata and ChainLock fork guard
dash-spv/src/storage/metadata.rs, dash-spv/src/storage/mod.rs, dash-spv/src/sync/*
Metadata loading now decodes values into caller-selected types. Fork detection ignores detected branches below the stored best ChainLock height.
Fork recovery and integration coverage
dash-spv/src/client/lifecycle.rs, dash-spv/src/storage/*, dash-spv/tests/dashd_sync/*
Fork recovery truncates wallet state before stored headers, filters, and blocks. Segment truncation clears data when the target is below its stored start. The integration test checks wallet state and truncation event data after a replacement branch.
FFI truncation callback
dash-spv-ffi/src/callbacks.rs, dash-spv-ffi/src/bin/ffi_cli.rs, dash-spv-ffi/tests/dashd_sync/callbacks.rs
The FFI adds an optional callback for ChainTruncated, dispatches event data when configured, and logs a warning when it is unset.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟠 High · up to 1e9c8

The native callback layout becomes incompatible with previously compiled callers. Fork recovery also emits truncation notifications between stopping and restarting their forwarding task, which can leave external wallet mirrors inconsistent. Deployment compatibility and durable recovery guarantees remain incompletely established.

Retained concerns

  • High · security · inferred: Adding on_chain_truncated before user_data changes the size and offsets of FFIWalletEventCallbacks and its containing by-value constructor argument. Under an old-caller/new-library mixture, the former data-pointer slot is interpreted as a callback, user_data is displaced, and the following error callback group also moves. This creates unsafe native pointer and dispatch confusion. Default initialization protects rebuilt callers, not previously compiled binaries; actual deployment mixing is unverified.
  • Medium · reliability · inferred: Fork recovery waits for the old wallet-event forwarding task to finish, then truncates wallets and emits ChainTruncated before restarting the client and subscribing the replacement monitor. Consequently, configured event handlers and the FFI callback miss the recovery notification. Consumers relying on that notification to delete replaced-branch transactions, restore outputs, and lower checkpoints can retain inconsistent durable state. Independent manager subscriptions and the installed persistence receiver are not subject to this forwarding-task gap.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A fork transition affects every wallet registered with the client’s manager, while a native ABI mismatch can affect the entire embedding process rather than one wallet. Neither concern establishes cross-tenant access, credential disclosure, or increased infrastructure privilege.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The supported native risk begins with incompatible caller and library layouts, not an attacker-selected callback address. Displaced pointers can then reach callback dispatch or callback consumers. Remote code execution is not verified, and the normal recovery forwarding gap prevents assuming that ChainTruncated reaches the new callback through that lifecycle.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Fork recovery holds the synchronization-loop lock and acts only on a cancelled loop, then drains tasks before wallet mutation. The fork producer recognizes an unknown header whose parent is below the stored tip after consulting the header pipeline. This pass did not complete the upstream validation trace, so it does not establish whether malicious peer headers can improperly authorize rollback.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The manager’s installed persistence channel is independent of the client’s lossy broadcast forwarding and receives events through the same emission point. Durable storage is owned by the embedding wallet implementation, not the SPV client. Ordered enqueueing therefore limits notification loss for that channel but does not establish atomic durable commits across chain and wallet rollback.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Use an explicitly versioned or size-negotiated native callback contract, and preserve truncation delivery across monitor restart through a lifecycle-independent receiver or replayable recovery notification. Define legacy-cache migration and interrupted-recovery behavior before relying on truncation as a durable reconciliation guarantee.

This PR has merge conflicts with the base branch. Please rebase or merge the base branch into your branch to resolve them.

After a fork, the client truncates its storage at the fork height and
syncs the new branch, but the wallets kept everything they recorded from
the dropped blocks: their transactions and UTXOs stayed confirmed, and
their synced height stayed above the fork, so the filters of the new
branch below it were never scanned for them.

`WalletInfoInterface::truncate_above` removes the transactions recorded
in blocks above the height, with the UTXOs they created, the spends
observed in them, and lowers the synced and last-processed heights to it.
The coins those transactions spent are unspent again: each funds account
keeps the UTXOs removed by spends not yet chainlocked, pruned once the
spend is chainlocked, since a fork never goes below a ChainLock and the
funding record of a chainlocked transaction is dropped.

`WalletInterface::truncate_above` applies it to every wallet and emits a
`WalletEvent::ChainTruncated` per wallet with the removed txids and the
restored outpoints, so a persister can drop the rows above the fork.
The FFI forwards it through `on_chain_truncated`. The client calls it
when it handles a fork.

Truncating a storage below its start height now drops everything instead
of failing. The block storage starts at its first stored block, so a
fork right below it made the recovery fail with the client stopped.

`test_sync_follows_reorg` replaces a block that pays a coinbase to the
wallet and spends a wallet coin: afterwards only the funding coin is
left, unspent, and the event names what to drop and restore.

Few things to look at:

  • A held spend-first coin is lost once its spend block is replayed. After the funding arrives, reapply_heights replays the spend, its input matches via spent_before_funded, and update_utxos drops that entry without pushing it into unsettled_spends (managed_core_funds_account.rs:409). A fork that then drops the spend restores nothing. Push the held Utxo as well, and extend truncate_above_restores_a_held_output_whose_spend_it_drops to replay before truncating.
  • A spend-first coin in the same account is lost too. When the funding arrives after its spend was recorded in that account, the is_outpoint_spent branch skips the output (managed_core_funds_account.rs:333), so it lands in no map and cannot be restored. File it under the spender's txid there.
  • Nothing enforces "a fork never goes below a ChainLock". fork_height (block_headers/manager.rs:185) fires on any unstored header whose parent is stored below the tip, before validation or a ChainLock check. Below a ChainLock, truncation drops provider payload records whose txids stay in finalized_txids, so they are never rebuilt, and with keep-finalized-transactions it drops chainlocked spends without restoring their coins. Clamp truncate_above at last_applied_chain_lock, or ignore such forks in handle_fork.
  • unsettled_spends leaks. A spend-only mempool transaction later mined in an already chainlocked block goes through promote_stored_transaction_context, which finalizes the record but never clears its entry. The field is persisted, so it only grows. Clear it there.
  • A storage error skips the wallet truncation for good. If one of the storage truncate_above calls in handle_fork fails, ? returns before the wallet is touched. The next run sees no fork because the headers are already truncated, so the wallet keeps its stale records and a synced height above the fork. The wallet truncation needs to happen even when storage fails.
  • InstantSend-locked spends get their inputs back as spendable. The lock is final for the txid and the network will mine it again, but until then coin selection can build a transaction that conflicts with our own lock. Keep the inputs of a dropped IS-locked transaction spent, ideally by moving the record back to unconfirmed instead of deleting it.
  • ChainTruncated.height is the fork height, not the wallet's new synced height. The wallet stores min(synced, fork), but the docs (events.rs:307, callbacks.rs:836) say to lower the synced height to height, which raises it for a wallet that was behind. Emit info.synced_height() or reword the docs.

And those... probably don't matter:

  • on_chain_truncated never fires over FFI. handle_fork truncates the wallet (lifecycle.rs:281) after stop_locked has joined the old wallet event monitor, and run_locked only subscribes the new one later (sync_coordinator.rs:62), so no EventHandler ever sees ChainTruncated. Truncate after the monitors subscribe and before start_sync, and assert the event through the handler in test_sync_follows_reorg.
  • This is a breaking change. WalletInterface::truncate_above has no default and FFIWalletEventCallbacks changes layout, so the title should be feat(wallet)!: ..., like #1093.

ZocoLini and others added 5 commits October 6, 2026 09:03
A branch off below the best persisted ChainLock is no fork: the blocks it
locks are final, so storage and wallets are left as they are.
`MetadataStorage::load_metadata` now deserializes the stored JSON value.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
`truncate_above` fails and changes nothing when the height is below a
wallet's applied ChainLock; `WalletManager` checks every wallet first, so
a refused truncation leaves all of them as they are. A fork now truncates
the wallets before storage and always restarts the client, so a storage
failure keeps the fork unstored and it is detected and retried.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…he fork

A wallet behind the fork has nothing to drop, so it is left as it is and
gets no `ChainTruncated`. The event docs now lower a synced height to the
fork height only when it is above it.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A spend first seen in the mempool and then in a chainlocked block is
final, so its `unsettled_spends` entry is dropped instead of kept forever.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
… drops its block

An InstantSend lock is final for the txid and the network mines it again,
so its record goes back to the mempool, its outputs stay InstantSend-locked
and the coins it spent stay spent instead of becoming selectable.
`ChainTruncated` reports such transactions in `unconfirmed_txids`.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
@ZocoLini ZocoLini changed the title feat: wallet truncate above feat(wallet)!: wallet truncate above Oct 6, 2026
An output spent before it was funded, whether held in
`spent_before_funded` or spent by a transaction the account recorded
first, is now kept in `unsettled_spends` under its spend, so a fork
dropping the spend gives it back.

Review comments at @dash-spv/src/sync/block_headers/manager.rs:
- Line 213: Update the fork check in the `chain_lock` handling to compare the
stored header hash with `chain_lock.block_hash`; when they differ, recover
toward the ChainLocked branch instead of rejecting every fork below
`chain_lock.block_height`. Add a test covering a ChainLock saved before its
header, followed by storage of a conflicting branch through the ChainLock
height.

Do not restart synchronization after a storage truncation fails.

handle_fork truncates block headers before filter headers, filters, and blocks. If a later truncation fails, the remaining operations are skipped, but the error branch still calls run_locked. After a successful header truncation, the stored tip is fork_height. BlockHeadersManager::fork_height does not classify a header whose parent is at that tip as a fork, so the same branch may not trigger cleanup again. Return the error and leave synchronization stopped, or resume the remaining truncations before restarting.

Reconcile the stored header with the ChainLock before rejecting the fork.

A valid ChainLock can be saved before its header exists: ChainLockManager::verify_block_hash permits that state. If a different branch is then stored through the ChainLock height, this height-only check rejects a fork toward the ChainLocked branch. The client can remain on the conflicting stored chain. Compare the stored header hash with chain_lock.block_hash. When they differ, recover toward the ChainLocked branch rather than rejecting every fork below its height. Add a test for that ordering.

One more which probably comes in play whenever there is a fork since you said you restart the client?

  • InstantSend-locked spends only stay spent until a restart. truncate_above decides what to keep from instant_send_locks, which is serde(skip) (managed_wallet_info/mod.rs:61) and never rebuilt on load. A wallet restored from disk drops a spend that was locked in an earlier session and hands its inputs back to coin selection. Persist the txid set and add a serde round trip to

I think this doesnt apply:

  • No process restart on a fork. handle_fork stops the sync loop, calls truncate_above
on the in-memory wallet, then starts the client again. The wallet never leaves
memory, so instant_send_locks is intact when truncate_above reads it.
  • Nobody deserializes ManagedWalletInfo, here or in Platform. Platform rebuilds the
wallet from SQLite and replays the IS locks it keeps in core_instant_locks through
mark_instant_send_utxos, which refills instant_send_locks. Their test
    rehydration_restores_instant_send_locks_onto_restored_utxos asserts exactly that.

I'd go further and drop the serde derives from the structs nobody serializes. That
would make it clear what's a supported persisted format and avoid discussions like
this one. Happy to open an issue for it.

More broadly, I think key-wallet's current design is a source of problems we can't
fix from this side. The consumer persists the state and injects it back, so
correctness depends on code we don't own. The injected state can be wrong, and the
consumer may not persist something that only becomes relevant later, as
instant_send_locks just did for truncate_above. Every new piece of wallet logic that
reads existing state silently creates a new persistence requirement for each
consumer. Nothing tells them about it, and nothing here can check it.

#1104 added two `hex::encode` calls in the chain-truncated callback,
but #1115 had already moved the workspace off the `hex` crate, so
`dash-spv-ffi` stops compiling on dev. Use `DisplayHex`, as the rest
of the file does.
