Description

This pull request adds a password-change flow for authenticated users with credentials accounts. The flow verifies the current password, revokes the user’s sessions, and updates the stored password hash.

Key Changes

  • Adds the server-side changePassword() API and the POST /password/change endpoint.
  • Adds API types and schemas for the required current and new passwords.
  • Adds stateful handling that verifies the current password, revokes sessions, and updates the password hash.
  • Rejects password changes in stateless mode and adds errors for invalid current passwords and password-change failures.
  • Strengthens session validation to reject missing, inactive, or expired sessions.

Usage

const result = await auth.api.changePassword({
  payload: {
    currentPassword: "current-password",
    newPassword: "new-password",
  },
  headers: request.headers,
  redirect: false,
})

if (result.success) {
  // The password change succeeded.
}

Explain Change →

Walkthrough

This change adds password updates for stateful sessions through a programmatic API and a POST /password/change endpoint. It validates the current and new passwords, verifies the current password before storing a hash of the new password, and marks the operation unsupported for stateless sessions.

Changes: Password change

Layer / File(s) Summary
Password-change contracts and validation
packages/core/src/@types/api.ts, packages/core/src/@types/session.ts, packages/core/src/shared/schemas/actions.ts, packages/core/src/errors/catalog.ts, packages/core/src/shared/utils/api.ts, packages/core/test/api/stateful/isProviderConnected.test.ts, packages/core/test/api/stateful/revokeToken.test.ts
Adds API and session types, request and response schemas, password-change and unsupported-operation errors, and the authenticated user ID to session validation results. Session validation rejects inactive and expired sessions. Related tests expect failures for inactive and expired sessions and no revocation for an expired session.
Session strategy password updates
packages/core/src/session/stateful/change-password.ts, packages/core/src/session/stateful/index.ts, packages/core/src/session/stateless/*
The stateful strategy verifies credentials, revokes the user's sessions, then updates the password hash. The stateless strategy reports the operation as unsupported, using coded errors for unsupported operations.
API and endpoint integration

Adds the programmatic API and registered POST endpoint. Tests cover success, missing credentials, incorrect current passwords, and redirect outcomes. The changelog documents the API and endpoint.

The new password-change endpoint works in the common case, but a misconfigured custom hash callback can lock users out of later password changes. An empty custom hash can be stored after their sessions are revoked. A sign-in racing with a password change can leave a session active under the old password. These should be addressed or explicitly accepted before merging.

A rabbit checks the password twice,
Then guards the sessions, neat and precise.
A fresh hash hops into place,
The endpoint returns with redirect grace.
Stateless paths say, “Not supported here,”
While tests make each result clear.

Revoke unused password-reset tokens when the password changes.

changePassword updates the password hash and revokes sessions. It does not revoke password_reset tokens issued earlier. A reset token issued before the change stays valid until it expires, so resetPassword can still accept it and replace the password the user just set.

Add a POST test for changePassword without X-CSRF-Token.

Every changePassword request in change.test.ts sends a valid X-CSRF-Token. Removing .verifyCSRFToken(skipCSRFCheck, doubleSubmitToken) from packages/core/src/api/change-password.ts would leave these tests passing. A CSRF regression on this endpoint would not be detected.

Send the same request with a valid session cookie and no X-CSRF-Token header. Assert the following:

  • The HTTP status is 403, the status of CSRF_DOUBLE_SUBMIT_FAILED in packages/core/src/errors/catalog.ts.
  • The body is { success: false, redirect: false, redirectURL: null }. The endpoint does not serialize the error code or message.
  • updatePasswordHash is not called.

Keep the valid cookie in the request. The test then fails only on the CSRF check.

Assert the Location header in the redirect test.

The test success changePassword with redirectTo and redirect: true checks only the 302 status and the JSON body. The redirect status and body do not depend on the Location header. A change that stops setting Location would still pass this test.
