feat(core): add forgotPassword and resetPassword APIs - #293
This pull request adds password recovery for applications that use stateful sessions. Users can request a password-reset token and use it to set a new credentials password. Applications can configure token expiry and send reset emails through a callback.
Key Changes
Add the forgotPassword() and resetPassword() server APIs and the POST /password/forgot and POST /password/reset endpoints.
Add stateful-session handlers to create and validate reset tokens, update credentials passwords, and revoke used tokens. Stateless sessions report these operations as unsupported.
Add request and response schemas, API types, password-reset configuration, and rate limits for password actions.
Add errors for invalid or expired reset tokens and for users without a credentials account.
Change the email verification endpoint from POST to GET.
This change adds forgot-password and reset-password APIs and HTTP endpoints. It adds password-reset configuration, schemas, rate limits, and session-strategy methods. The stateful strategy creates and validates reset tokens and updates credentials; the stateless strategy reports these operations as unsupported. The email-verification endpoint changes from POST to GET.
Adds API and session types, password-reset configuration and rate-limit options, plus request and response schemas. The context includes the configured password-reset settings.
The stateful strategy creates reset tokens, validates them, updates a credentials account, and revokes the token. The stateless strategy exposes handlers that throw unsupported-operation errors.
Adds rate-limited APIs and HTTP actions for password recovery, with optional reset-email delivery, redirect handling, and error mapping. Adds change-password rate-limit and log entries, and changes verification-email strategy arguments to an options object.
Adds tests and fixtures for recovery success, errors, token expiry, redirects, and reset-email delivery.
GET endpoint and request validation packages/core/src/actions/verifyEmail/*, packages/core/test/actions/verifyEmail/verify.test.ts
Changes the email-verification endpoint to GET, uses the shared email body schema for sending verification email, and updates verification tests to send GET requests.

Password recovery has unresolved security and usability defects: reset emails can lead to an unusable endpoint, account existence is exposed, and successful resets leave other recovery tokens and existing sessions valid. Address these issues before merging.

A rabbit finds a token bright, Then bounds through reset flows at night. A password changes, records close, The GET route joins the trail it chose. With carrots packed, it hops away, And leaves new tests along the way.
⚠️Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Validate payload at the API boundary.
api.resetPassword({ payload }) forwards payload.token and payload.newPassword straight to the strategy. Only the HTTP endpoint applies ResetPasswordBodySchema. A direct server call can pass an empty or weak password. TypeScript types do not check this at runtime. Parse payload with ResetPasswordBodySchema before calling the strategy.
Based on learnings: "validate all data crossing runtime trust boundaries... using Zod schemas rather than trusting static type annotations."

The test passes expiresIn: 3600 but only checks expiresAt: expect.any(Date). The test also passes if the option is ignored. Use vi.useFakeTimers() with vi.setSystemTime(). Then assert that expiresAt equals now plus 3600 seconds. Keep the units consistent with the config contract.

Add a concurrent redemption test for one-time reset tokens.
The revoked-token test replays a token that is already revoked. It only proves reuse handling after the revocation is committed. It does not cover two requests that both pass the revokedAt check before either one calls revokeToken. The stateful resetPassword flow reads the token, updates the password hash, and then revokes the token as separate adapter calls. Add a test that fires two synchronized POST /password/reset requests with the same token. Assert that exactly one succeeds. Make the mock adapter model the commit delay. If the test fails, make the redeem step atomic in the adapter. For example, use a single conditional update on revokedAt.
Based on learnings: when a suite validates one-time-use token redemption only by sequential replay, flag the untested concurrent race window.

feat(core): add forgotPassword and resetPassword APIs
feat(core): add forgotPassword and resetPassword APIs

The test success forgotPassword with redirectTo and redirect: true checks the 302 status and the JSON body, but not the Location header. Removing the Location header would not fail this test. Add an assertion such as expect(response.headers.get("Location")).toContain("/auth/password-reset") so the test detects a missing or incorrect redirect target.

In the “success forgotPassword with redirectTo and redirect: true” test, assert
that the response’s Location header points to the expected /auth/password-reset
target, alongside the existing status and body assertions.
Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Replacing the former string-only email body check with the shared email validator may reject addresses already accepted and stored by registration, preventing those users from requesting verification.
POST /emailVerification/send rejects the request before it reaches the user lookup or email callback.
This can occur when: An existing account uses an address accepted by registration but rejected by the new validator, such as a locally routed address if registration permits one.

credentials account before calling createSecretValue or sending the reset email;
when none exists, skip both actions. Preserve the existing USER_NOT_FOUND

- Line 24: Update the reset URL returned by the forgot-password flow so it opens
a page that accepts a new password instead of targeting the POST-only
`/password/reset` endpoint. Check the existing frontend or application route for
the password-reset page and build the email link to that page, while preserving
the token parameter.
- Line 24: Update the password-reset URL construction in the forgot-password

configured, avoid returning a reset link based on the request’s Host header;
preserve the existing safeguards and establish the appropriate safe failure

Review comments at @packages/core/src/session/stateful/reset-password.ts:

verificationToken by ID. Since the adapter lacks per-user revocation, establish
and add the necessary adapter method for revoking these tokens by userId, then
call it here; do not expand the change to token issuance unless required for
correctness.
- Around line 9-16: Update resetPassword to consume the token conditionally by
requiring revokedAt to be null, verify that exactly one token was revoked, and
only then update the password. Run token consumption and the password update in
one transaction using the established adapter transaction mechanism, so
concurrent requests cannot both proceed and a failed password update does not
leave the token consumed.
- Around line 32-34: Update resetPassword to revoke all sessions for
verificationToken.userId after updatePasswordHash, using the adapter’s
established RevokeReason value for a completed password reset. Confirm the
revokeAllSessions signature and available reason values before choosing
arguments; keep reset-token revocation intact.
