What

  • Restores CLAUDE.md as a pointer to AGENTS.md, the same file Remove the bundled LiveKit agent skills #66 removed.
  • Changes the LiveKit agent skills section of AGENTS.md so a coding agent installs the skills with lk skills install --yes when they're missing, instead of recommending that the developer do it. It also checks for a global install, and falls back to asking the developer when it can't run commands or the CLI predates lk skills (v2.19.0).

Why

Coding agents started from this template don't pick up the LiveKit skills (DEVX-840). Claude Code doesn't read AGENTS.md on its own, so without CLAUDE.md it never sees the skills section. And an agent that does read it only suggests the install, so the skills aren't there for that session.

This partly reverts #66: the bundled skills stay removed, and only the pointer file comes back.

How to verify

  1. Run lk agent init with this template, and skip the skills install it offers (or remove .agents/ and .claude/ afterward).
  2. Open the project in a fresh Claude Code session and ask it to add a feature to the agent.
  3. It should run lk skills install --yes (or ask you to) before it starts, then use the LiveKit skills.

The same change for the Python starter: livekit-examples/agent-starter-python#114

Documentation only. No code or test changes.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Restore CLAUDE.md so Claude Code reads AGENTS.md, and have coding agents
run `lk skills install --yes` when the LiveKit skills are missing instead
of only recommending it.

@JackNDwyer two things

  1. is this actually a demonstrated weakness or a theoretical weakness? the goal is that lk agent init would install the skills. I'm pretty hesistant to ask agents to install the skills themselves without asking the developer about it, at this time.

  2. claude code added native support for AGENTS.md last month https://x.com/trq212/status/2101009392611278961?s=20

Was a demonstrated weakness, but I may have been on an old copy of Claude Code. I ran a bunch of scenarios and all of them either explicitly told me they ignored the AGENTS.md or didn't see it to begin with.

I'll try updating and retesting @bcherry

Ok you're right @bcherry

Updated Claude Code and lk CLI.

AGENTS.md loads natively and the skills get used. My failures were on old versions. Closing this and livekit-examples/agent-starter-python#114 · Point Claude Code at AGENTS.md…. The real gap is empty-folder starts, which livekit-cli#1056 and livekit/livekit-cli#1057 cover.

@JackNDwyer this is an argument perhaps to keep CLAUDE.md around a little longer. i was a little aggressive in deleting it so quickly, i assumed everyone is getting auto-updated but maybe that was a bad assumption

Fair

My Claude Code was six months out of date (I seemingly had auto-updates turned off + I'd switched to Claude Desktop), but the bigger problem was my lk was too old to install skills. As you said, on current versions anyone starting from lk agent init natively installs AGENTS.md and the skills, which I verified is correct and worked fine with my auto-updating Claude Desktop.

The remaining issue is still someone who just asks Claude to “build a LiveKit agent” in an empty folder, which is covered by the DEVX-843 ticket I mentioned in the thread (livekit/livekit-cli#1056 · feat(skills): offer to install… and livekit/livekit-cli#1057 · feat(install): support macOS and….
