Split out of #1205 at review. Stacked on #1211; followed by #1205 (masternode sync policy), which is the first to send these requests, and #1206.

Basic explanation

Masternode requests are distributed round-robin over the peers whose measured latency is close to the fastest. A retry of a response we refused can therefore go straight back to the peer that sent it, and when that peer is the only fast one it gets every retry. This PR lets a request avoid given peers. Nothing sends such a request yet: #1205 uses it for mnlistdiff and QRInfo retries.

What changes

  • Requests that avoid peers. New NetworkRequest::SendMessageAvoiding, sent by the new RequestSender::request_mnlist_diff_avoiding and request_qr_info_avoiding, lets a request prefer, among the peers eligible for it, those outside a list. send_distributed_avoiding drops them, through distributed_peer, before the owing and latency filters and falls back to every eligible peer when none would remain, so avoiding never stops a request from going out. The helpers send the plain request when there is no peer to avoid.
  • One peer selection. The candidate selection of a distributed send moves into distributed_peer, which both the send and the routing tests call, so the tests check the selection production uses.

Breaking

dash_spv::network::NetworkRequest (public, exhaustive) gains SendMessageAvoiding.

Known limits

  • Avoidance is a preference, not a ban: when every eligible peer is avoided, down to a single connected peer, the request goes to an avoided one.

Tests

  • test_requests_carry_the_peers_to_avoid checks what the RequestSender helpers queue, and test_routing_avoids_the_given_peers_while_another_is_connected checks the selection through the test_route_avoiding helper, which calls distributed_peer.
  • Pinned by mutation: test_queued_request_avoiding_a_peer_goes_to_another_through_the_processor connects two peers over loopback TCP, makes the avoided one the fastest, and sends through the request processor: the request goes to the other peer, and still goes out when every peer is avoided, down to a single one. It fails with without_avoided removed from the selection and with SendMessageAvoiding sent through the plain send_distributed.

The changes add peer-avoidance routing for masternode-list diff and QRInfo requests. They also update SML engine header lookups and feed operations to propagate storage failures separately from refused messages, and add rollback for unsuccessful QRInfo feeds.

Changes: Peer-Avoidance Request Routing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Avoid-aware request API
dash-spv/src/network/mod.rs, dash-spv/src/sync/filters/manager.rs, dash-spv/src/network/tests.rs
Adds SendMessageAvoiding and avoid-aware methods for masternode-list diff and QRInfo requests. Empty avoid lists use the existing request variant. Request matching and sender tests support both variants.
Peer selection and request processing
dash-spv/src/network/manager.rs, dash-spv/src/network/tests.rs
The request processor routes avoid-aware messages. Routing excludes avoided peers when alternatives remain, then applies the existing request-owed filtering. Tests cover selection, queued delivery, and fallback when all peers are avoided.

SML Engine Error Propagation and Feed State

Layer / File(s) Summary
Storage-aware lookups and work-list scans
dash-spv/src/sml_engine.rs, dash-spv/src/sync/masternodes/sync_manager.rs, dash-spv/src/test_utils/mod.rs
Adds typed feed errors and fallible header lookups. Work-list scans expose read failures or omit unreadable entries in the readable-only variant. Synchronization callers and tests use the updated APIs.
QRInfo validation and rollback
dash-spv/src/sml_engine.rs
QRInfo feeds propagate storage failures, reject diffs without paired snapshots, and restore lists and cycles unless the feed succeeds. Tests cover refusal, storage errors, and cancellation.
Diff application and replay errors
dash-spv/src/sml_engine.rs, dash-spv/src/storage/masternode.rs
Diff application returns typed feed errors and requires readable base and target heights. Replay logs the application error and message height.
Known-height handling in pruning and consumers
dash-spv/src/sml_engine/helpers.rs, dash-spv/src/sml_engine/rotated_quorum_construction.rs, dash-spv/src/sml_engine/validation.rs, dash-spv/tests/dashd_masternode/tests_sync.rs
Pruning and quorum operations use known-height lookups. Sync test code handles fallible header reads.

A temporary local header-read failure during QRInfo handling can use up the retry budget quickly and skip masternode sync. The fix is small and local. The peer-avoidance routing itself shows no concrete problems.

dash-spv/src/sync/masternodes/sync_manager.rs:103-118
🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Do not count FeedError::HeaderStorage as a peer rejection.

HeaderStorage is a local failure. The current call marks it as rejected, so tick retries immediately and consumes the MAX_RETRY_ATTEMPTS budget. A transient storage failure can therefore skip masternode sync.

Restrict the rejection flag to FeedError::Refused, and borrow e so the later e.to_string() remains valid:

58-70: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Split the SML engine error-handling work from the peer-avoidance feature.

The PR objectives describe this PR as a peer-avoidance feature for distributed network requests. These are the new SendMessageAvoiding variant and the *_avoiding request helpers. This file adds a separate set of changes:

  • A new FeedError type that separates header-storage errors from refusals.
  • Rollback of QRInfo feeds through QRInfoRollback.
  • A new rule that refuses a QRInfo when a diff has no paired snapshot.
  • Replay error reporting.

These changes fix and harden QRInfo and diff handling, which is a different concern from peer routing. One PR title prefix cannot describe both concerns accurately. A feat title hides the fixes, and a fix title hides the new API.

Move the SML engine changes (sml_engine.rs, sml_engine/*, storage/masternode.rs, the sync-manager call sites, and tests_sync.rs) into a separate fix: PR. Keep the network-routing changes in the feat: PR.

As per path instructions: "If a PR mixes unrelated concerns (e.g., a bug fix bundled with a refactor or new feature), suggest splitting it into separate focused PRs."

Masternode requests are distributed round-robin over the peers whose
measured latency is close to the fastest. A retry of a response we
refused can therefore go straight back to the peer that sent it, and
when that peer is the only fast one it gets every retry.

`NetworkRequest::SendMessageAvoiding` carries the peers to avoid.
`send_distributed_avoiding` drops them from the candidates before the
owing and latency filters and keeps every candidate when none would
remain, so avoiding never stops a request from going out.
`RequestSender::request_mnlist_diff_avoiding` and
`request_qr_info_avoiding` send it, and send the plain request when
there is no peer to avoid.

Breaking: `NetworkRequest` is public and exhaustive, and gains the
`SendMessageAvoiding` variant.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The tests for requests that avoid peers stopped short of the code that
sends them. `test_route_avoiding` rebuilt the candidate selection
instead of calling it, and the `RequestSender` test only checked what
was queued. Dropping `without_avoided` from `send_distributed_avoiding`,
or handing `SendMessageAvoiding` to the plain `send_distributed`, left
every test green while retries went back to the refusing peers.

The candidate selection of a distributed send moves into
`distributed_peer`, which both the send and `test_route_avoiding` call,
so routing tests check the selection production uses. A new test
connects two peers over loopback TCP, measures the avoided one as far
faster, and sends through the request processor: the request goes to
the other peer, and still goes out when every peer is avoided, down to
a single one.

No behavior changes, so the red phase is a mutation of the production
path:
`test_queued_request_avoiding_a_peer_goes_to_another_through_the_processor`
✖ with `without_avoided` removed (the fast avoided peer got it), ✖ with
`SendMessageAvoiding` sent through `send_distributed`, ✔ on this
commit. With `without_avoided` removed,
`test_routing_avoids_the_given_peers_while_another_is_connected` passed
before this commit and fails on it.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The docs of `NetworkRequest::SendMessageAvoiding` and the
`RequestSender` avoiding helpers said a request goes to another
connected peer. It goes to one of the peers eligible for the request
and falls back to an avoided one when every eligible peer is avoided,
so they now say so. `distributed_peer` says in which order it prefers
peers.

No behavior changes, so no test.
