…t before it The red half of the protocol version gate. A 4.1 node answers the 13 methods protocol 14 added with UNIMPLEMENTED, and drops the fields protocol 14 added to existing requests (getDocuments `sub_queries` and `chained`, `token_id` on the six shielded pool requests), answering a different question. Either answer gets an honest node banned. Scaffolding only, no behaviour change: - `TransportRequest::needs_protocol_version`, `None` for every request, and a `needs_protocol_version:` key in `impl_transport_request_grpc!`; - `Error::ProtocolVersionNotActive`, `StaleNodeError::ProtocolVersion`, the wasm-sdk `ProtocolVersionNotActive` kind and the typed FFI arm; - the gate's decision function and test hooks, as no-ops. Tests, red until the next commit: - rs-sdk `sdk::protocol_gate_tests` (mock SDK, gate enforced, signed probe vectors): 14 of 16 fail, e.g. the 13 new methods are sent and answered UNIMPLEMENTED, composite/chained/token-pool requests are sent at verified 13, nothing asks the network for its version, an answer signed at 13 to a gated request is accepted, and caller metadata passed to `verify_response_metadata` ratchets the version; - rs-dapi-client `request_inventory`: every request field, oneof arm, enum value and method reachable from a request is either in the v4.1.1 baseline or declared with a verdict (passes), and the verdict checks against `needs_protocol_version` fail (2 of 5); - drive-abci `older_node_answers`: the emulated 4.1 answers to composite, chained and token-pool requests fail verification under protocol 13 and 14 rules (passes), and the requests declare 14 (all 3 fail); - drive-proof-verifier `protocol_gate`: generates and checks the signed vectors (genesis epoch signed at 13, 14 and 1000; contract range and latest-versions answers signed at 13). …nning nodes A 5.0 SDK on mainnet meets 4.1 and 5.0 nodes, all at protocol 13. A 4.1 node answers the 13 query methods protocol 14 added with UNIMPLEMENTED, and drops the fields protocol 14 added (getDocuments `sub_queries` and `chained`, `token_id` on the six shielded pool requests), proving the plain page, the inner query or the credit pool instead. The SDK bans the node either way, up to four per call. - rs-dapi-client: requests declare the protocol version every node serves them from (`needs_protocol_version`): 14 for the 13 new methods, for composite and chained documents queries, and for token pool requests. Credit pool and every other 4.1-shaped request: none. - rs-sdk: the Fetch, FetchMany and FetchUnproved paths refuse such a request with `Error::ProtocolVersionNotActive` (not retryable) unless a verified answer signed at that version or later has been seen and the SDK's own version is at least that (`min(stored, verified)`, the rule that already selects the non-unique lookup's V1). When the network may have moved, they first ask for the genesis epoch, proved whatever the SDK's proof setting, under the caller's settings. Pinned-below SDKs and SDKs without a context provider refuse without asking. Mock SDKs do not enforce the rule. An answer to such a request signed below the version is stale (`StaleNodeError::ProtocolVersion`) and retried elsewhere. - Both the gate and the non-unique V1 selector take their basis from `QuerySettings::network_protocol_basis`. An unpinned SDK on a network proven at a version newer than it knows encodes requests with the newest version it knows, the rules it already reads those answers with. - Protocol versions are learned only from answers the SDK verified: `Sdk::verify_response_metadata` now only checks freshness and changes neither the stored nor the verified version. Tests from the previous commit, red there, all pass here: ✖ before fix, ✔ after: - rs-sdk sdk::protocol_gate_tests: 14 failing -> 16/16 pass; - rs-dapi-client request_inventory: 2 failing -> 5/5 pass; - drive-abci older_node_answers: 3 failing -> 3/3 pass. BREAKING CHANGE: new `Error::ProtocolVersionNotActive` and `StaleNodeError::ProtocolVersion` variants; requests protocol 14 added are refused locally until the network has proven protocol 14, also on SDKs pinned or seeded at 14 and on SDKs without a context provider; `Sdk::verify_response_metadata` no longer learns protocol versions; `Sdk::query_settings` reports the newest known version for an unpinned SDK on a network proven newer than this build knows. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…it activates A book page (Features from Protocol Version 14) with the requests that need protocol 14, how the SDK decides, the error on each surface, and how a new request declares the version it needs; the fetch pipeline step; the rs-sdk new-query checklist step; the js-evo-sdk revalidation sample now catches `ProtocolVersionNotActive`; the latest-versions docs no longer describe an answer from protocol 13 nodes, which the SDK no longer asks; the getting-started pin example says a pin below 14 refuses protocol 14 features. No behaviour change; no test. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…nodes Folds in the multi-agent review of the protocol version gate. Behaviour: - `Error::ProtocolVersionNotActive` gains `pinned`: the SDK is pinned below the version, so no answer can lift the refusal. The message says so instead of "not verified yet". - When asking the network for its version failed, the refusal may be transient: wasm-sdk reports it retriable and rs-sdk-ffi as `NetworkError`. Otherwise it stays non-retriable / `ProtocolError`. `CanRetry` is unchanged either way, so no node is banned for it. - A proofs-off SDK's probe bans no node: with a context provider that cannot give quorum keys it fails on every node, which says nothing about them. The gated call is refused with that failure as its cause. - `FetchUnproved` reads answers with the version the request was encoded with (`query_settings`), as the proved paths already do. - The verified version is recorded with Release and read with Acquire, so a reader that sees it also sees the stored version ratcheted first. - `delegate_transport_request_variant!` forwards `needs_protocol_version`. - The public `verify_response_metadata` doc states again that only verified metadata should be passed: it still raises the height mark. Tests (each also fails against the code it pins, see the PR): - the 12 unproved new methods are not sent at verified 13; - a seed or pin of 14 still asks the network first; - the probe runs under the caller's request settings; - a proofs-off SDK whose provider gives no quorum keys bans no node, while a proved SDK still does; - the decision matrix also covers a version above 14; - the probe request is the one `current_epoch_probe_query` encodes; - the inventory also checks the 5.0 inventory (`v5.0.txt`): a later release's addition, inside a 5.0 addition or not, must be declared, with a version above 14; - the drive-abci harness checks each emulated 4.1 answer verifies as the plain page, inner query or credit pool it really answers; - wasm-sdk: the persistence test drives the observer directly, since unverified metadata no longer ratchets the version; the functional test pinned to 13 now expects the refusal, and an unpinned local client probes and succeeds. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The previous version counted probe attempts after a transport error. In the mock, a transport error is not retryable at the SDK level and the only node is the one answering, so the count was the same with the caller's settings or the defaults. Now the probe's answer cannot be verified (the context provider knows no quorum keys), a retryable failure that bans its node unless the caller asked not to ban. Mutation check: replacing the caller's settings with the defaults in the probe turns this test red; it stayed green with the previous version. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

decidereturnsGate::Probefor each unpinned SDK whose verified version is belowrequired. A probe that proves 13 does not change this result. On mainnet and testnet at protocol 13, each gated call therefore makes one extra provedgetEpochsInforound trip before the refusal. Gated calls include composite documents queries, chained documents queries and token-pool shielded queries. Concurrent gated calls on a fresh SDK each start a separate probe, and nothing deduplicates them. Under UI load or polling, this doubles the latency of each refusal and sends a burst of probe traffic to DAPI nodes.Consider these two measures:
- Keep a timestamp of the last probe result below

…earned `FetchUnproved` chose the version it reads answers with before asking the network for its version. On a fresh SDK seeded at 13, the probe learns 14 and the gated request goes out, but a contract only protocol 14 rules parse (e.g. ModerationCharters in a latest-versions answer with `include_contracts`) failed as a retryable proof error, banning the honest nodes that sent it on the first call. It is now chosen after the check, as the proved paths already do when they verify. Regression test: a fresh SDK's first unproved latest-versions call, answered with the real protocol 14 ModerationCharters contract after a signed protocol 14 probe, returns the contract with one probe, one request and no ban. ✖ before fix: "invalid contract structure: only byte arrays are supported now" (Error::Proof); ✔ after. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
… the probe
The unproved-parse regression test now also returns AppConnect, whose
indexes use protocol 14 keywords that protocol 13 rules reject ("value
wrong type error: unexpected property name"), next to ModerationCharters
(protocol 14 types). Each contract alone fails the test when the answer
is read with the version from before the probe, and passes with
0475eb8.

`StaleNodeError::ProtocolVersion` ("received an answer signed at protocol
version 13 to a request that needs 14; try another server") had no typed
arm, so its text fell through to the `protocol` substring and became
`ProtocolError`, which hosts read as "the network cannot serve this yet".
Right after activation, a gated FFI call whose attempts all reach nodes
still signing 13 would hide a feature the network already serves.
`StaleNode` now maps to `NetworkError`, like other failures another node
may not have.
Test: a protocol-version and a height stale node both map to
NetworkError.
✖ before fix: ProtocolError; ✔ after.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A refusal whose probe failed was reported as transient on every surface: wasm `isRetriable` true, FFI `NetworkError`. When the cause is this SDK's own setup, the request can never succeed: no context provider, or one that cannot give quorum keys at all (a non-trusted EvoSDK's WasmContext answers every key lookup with "Non-trusted mode is not supported"). An app following the README sample would retry such a call forever. `Error::is_transient_protocol_version_refusal` decides it once: true for a refusal whose cause can pass (nodes, a quorum source or a quorum not answering yet), false without a cause and for `ContextProviderNotSet` or a `Generic`/`Config` context provider error, also inside retry-exhaustion wrappers. wasm-sdk and rs-sdk-ffi use it. The wasm kind's doc states the retriable exception. Tests: rs-sdk classifies transient and permanent causes; wasm and FFI map a non-trusted provider's failure to not retriable / ProtocolError. ✖ before fix: retriable / NetworkError; ✔ after. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The gate's decision and the refusal's `pinned` flag computed the same expression separately; both now use one helper, so they cannot drift. The 5.0 version constant's comment says "no 4.x stable release", since prereleases are not what it speaks of. No behaviour change; covered by the gate tests (21 passed). Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The probe can reach a node that has not caught up with the activation yet; its answer signed at 13 refuses that call even though the network runs 14, until the next call asks again. The book says so, says that a stale answer is a network error on FFI, and that only failures that can pass make the refusal retriable. No behaviour change; no test. Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2
The protocol-version gate is generally sound and the relevant CI checks have passed, with no blocking correctness or security issue found. Six non-blocking issues remain around sibling-path coverage, version ownership, error classification, and test wiring. The Rust workspace test check is still in progress, so final CI coverage is not yet complete.

🟡 Suggestion: Route moderation-charter availability through the shared protocol gate
packages/rs-sdk/src/platform/moderation_charters/mod.rs:55-65
fetch_moderation_charters_contract still uses its own stored-version check, calls refresh_protocol_version, and returns Error::Generic when protocol 14 is unavailable. A pinned SDK below 14 refuses without the new typed error, while a proofs-disabled SDK's refresh is a no-op and cannot discover that the network has activated protocol 14. This leaves a protocol-14 feature with different probing and error semantics from the other gated queries, preventing consumers from handling it through ProtocolVersionNotActive. Use the shared network-basis gate and preserve the pinned and probe-cause fields; if this is deferred, add a tracking issue.

🟡 Suggestion: Forward protocol requirements from the manual transport wrapper
packages/rs-sdk/src/platform/identities_contract_keys_query.rs:93-111
The new TransportRequest::needs_protocol_version method is forwarded by the delegate macro and generated gRPC implementations, but this manual implementation forwards only names_nothing. Its current inner request declares no requirement, so there is no present behavioral failure; however, any future protocol-gated field or method added to GetIdentitiesContractKeysRequest would silently lose the declaration through this wrapper and bypass the SDK gate. Keep manual wrappers consistent with the generated and delegated implementations.

.ok()
.and_then(|request| request.needs_protocol_version())
}
source: muse-spark-1.3-contributor (phase1-reviewer: general, rust-quality)
🟡 Suggestion: Test persistence through the production observer wiring
packages/wasm-sdk/src/sdk.rs:809-816
The test invokes persist_protocol_version(Network::Testnet)(latest) directly, so it verifies only the storage helper. It does not verify that WasmSdkBuilder::build() installs the observer at line 522. A regression removing or misconfiguring .with_protocol_version_observer(...) would still pass while verified protocol-version ratchets would no longer persist for future SDK instances. Exercise a real ratchet through a built SDK or add a narrowly scoped test hook that verifies the builder-installed observer.

In `packages/rs-sdk/src/platform/fetch.rs`:
- [SUGGESTION] packages/rs-sdk/src/platform/fetch.rs:180-197: Gate protocol-dependent query validation before encoding
The gate runs only after both rich and wire queries have been encoded. The encoder performs protocol-dependent validation using the SDK's current version; for example, `contains` and `containsAny` clauses in a composite or chained query return `Error::Config` when the SDK is still using protocol 13. A fresh SDK therefore fails locally before `ensure_network_serves` can probe a network that may already run protocol 14, and the request is never retried with the version learned by the probe. Surface the request's protocol requirement before this validation and re-encode after a successful probe. The PR describes this as a follow-up, but no tracking issue is provided and it affects the stated composite/chained-query behavior.
In `packages/rs-sdk/src/platform/moderation_charters/mod.rs`:
- [SUGGESTION] packages/rs-sdk/src/platform/moderation_charters/mod.rs:55-65: Route moderation-charter availability through the shared protocol gate
`fetch_moderation_charters_contract` still uses its own stored-version check, calls `refresh_protocol_version`, and returns `Error::Generic` when protocol 14 is unavailable. A pinned SDK below 14 refuses without the new typed error, while a proofs-disabled SDK's refresh is a no-op and cannot discover that the network has activated protocol 14. This leaves a protocol-14 feature with different probing and error semantics from the other gated queries, preventing consumers from handling it through `ProtocolVersionNotActive`. Use the shared network-basis gate and preserve the pinned and probe-cause fields; if this is deferred, add a tracking issue.
In `packages/rs-dapi-client/src/transport/grpc.rs`:
- [SUGGESTION] packages/rs-dapi-client/src/transport/grpc.rs:303-305: Keep the protocol requirement in the versioning owner
`PROTOCOL_VERSION_OF_5_0` hardcodes protocol version 14 in the transport implementation. The repository's coding conventions state that version numbers belong in `packages/rs-platform-version`, and the canonical versioning code already defines protocol 14. Duplicating the activation threshold here allows a future protocol-version change to leave the request inventory and gate stale. Expose or consume the canonical protocol constant through the appropriate lightweight dependency instead of maintaining a second literal.
In `packages/rs-sdk/src/platform/identities_contract_keys_query.rs`:
- [SUGGESTION] packages/rs-sdk/src/platform/identities_contract_keys_query.rs:93-111: Forward protocol requirements from the manual transport wrapper
The new `TransportRequest::needs_protocol_version` method is forwarded by the delegate macro and generated gRPC implementations, but this manual implementation forwards only `names_nothing`. Its current inner request declares no requirement, so there is no present behavioral failure; however, any future protocol-gated field or method added to `GetIdentitiesContractKeysRequest` would silently lose the declaration through this wrapper and bypass the SDK gate. Keep manual wrappers consistent with the generated and delegated implementations.
In `packages/rs-sdk/src/error.rs`:
- [SUGGESTION] packages/rs-sdk/src/error.rs:204-214: Do not classify transient quorum-source failures as permanent setup failures
`cannot_verify_answers` treats every `ContextProviderError::Generic` under `QuorumKeyUnavailable` as permanently unable to verify answers. `TrustedHttpContextProvider::get_quorum_public_key` currently converts a failed quorum refetch, including temporary HTTP or source failures, into `Generic`. When refetching is enabled, the subsequent fetch method can return no future, leaving the original `QuorumKeyUnavailable(Generic)` error intact. The protocol refusal is then marked non-transient and is exposed as a permanent protocol error even though retrying the quorum source could succeed. Preserve a dedicated source-unavailable error through this path, or narrow the permanent classification to a genuinely non-recoverable provider configuration error.
In `packages/wasm-sdk/src/sdk.rs`:
- [SUGGESTION] packages/wasm-sdk/src/sdk.rs:809-816: Test persistence through the production observer wiring
The test invokes `persist_protocol_version(Network::Testnet)(latest)` directly, so it verifies only the storage helper. It does not verify that `WasmSdkBuilder::build()` installs the observer at line 522. A regression removing or misconfiguring `.with_protocol_version_observer(...)` would still pass while verified protocol-version ratchets would no longer persist for future SDK instances. Exercise a real ratchet through a built SDK or add a narrowly scoped test hook that verifies the builder-installed observer.

`is_transient_protocol_version_refusal` counted every `Generic` context provider error behind a missing quorum key as permanent. The trusted HTTP provider reports a failed refetch of the quorum lists (a quorum service not answering) as `Generic`, and so does the FFI callback provider for any failed host callback: those refusals were reported as not retriable / `ProtocolError` although a later call can succeed. Only `ContextProviderNotSet` and `ContextProviderError::Config` now count as permanent. A non-trusted wasm SDK's context, which can never give quorum keys, reports that as `Config` instead of `Generic`, so its refusals stay not retriable. Tests: a trusted provider's refetch failure is transient in rs-sdk, retriable in wasm and `NetworkError` on FFI; the wasm test now uses the error `WasmContext` really returns, and FFI's permanent case uses `Config`. ✖ before fix: "Failed to find quorum: HTTP 503" not transient / not retriable / ProtocolError; ✔ after. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
… keys query The hand-written `TransportRequest` for `IdentitiesContractKeysQuery` forwarded `names_nothing` but not `needs_protocol_version`, like the delegate macro and the generated impls now do. A field a later release adds to `GetIdentitiesContractKeysRequest` would otherwise lose its declaration behind this wrapper and skip the SDK's check. No behaviour change today: the wrapped request declares none. No test. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Matches the classification: only a missing context provider or one configured without quorum keys (a non-trusted EvoSDK) is permanent. No behaviour change; no test. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2
The protocol-version gate is broadly implemented correctly, with authenticated version learning, stale-answer handling, and transport declaration forwarding preserved. Three previously reported suggestions remain valid: the WASM persistence test bypasses production observer wiring, moderation-charter fetching bypasses the shared typed gate, and protocol-dependent document validation can fail before probing. CI checks covering the changed code were still in progress at this head.

🟡 Suggestion: Test persistence through the production observer wiring
packages/wasm-sdk/src/sdk.rs:809-816
The test calls persist_protocol_version(Network::Testnet)(latest) directly, so it verifies the storage helper but not that WasmSdkBuilder::build() installs the observer at lines 519-522. A regression that removes or miswires with_protocol_version_observer would still leave this test passing even though verified protocol-version ratchets would no longer persist for subsequent browser loads. Build the SDK through the public builder path and trigger a verified ratchet, or add a narrowly scoped test seam that exercises the same production construction path.

🟡 Suggestion: Route moderation-charter availability through the shared protocol gate
packages/rs-sdk/src/platform/moderation_charters/mod.rs:55-65
fetch_moderation_charters_contract still checks the stored protocol_version_number(), calls refresh_protocol_version(), and returns Error::Generic when the version is below 14. This protocol-14 feature therefore bypasses network_protocol_basis() and ProtocolVersionNotActive, producing different pinned, proofs-off, missing-provider, and transient-probe behavior from the other gated requests. Route this helper through the shared gate, or provide a separate tracked issue or pull request before deferring the change.

- [SUGGESTION] packages/rs-sdk/src/platform/identities_contract_keys_query.rs:107-117: Avoid a second deep conversion when forwarding the protocol requirement
`names_nothing` immediately converts and clones the complete wrapper into `GetIdentitiesContractKeysRequest`, and `needs_protocol_version` repeats the same deep conversion for every contract-key query. The generated request currently declares no protocol requirement, so this adds allocations and work without changing the result. Refactor the wrapper so the generated request is built once and reused for both metadata checks, while retaining forwarding behavior if the generated request later gains a protocol requirement.
In `packages/rs-sdk/src/platform/fetch.rs`:
- [SUGGESTION] packages/rs-sdk/src/platform/fetch.rs:213-223: Classify stale protocol answers before version-sensitive proof parsing
`ensure_answer_serves` runs only after `parse_proof_with_metadata_and_proof` has interpreted the response using the requested query shape. An older node that drops a protocol-14 field can return a response that is valid for the older query but cannot be parsed as the requested composite, chained, or token-pool response; parsing then fails with a generic proof error before the new `StaleNodeError::ProtocolVersion` classification is reached. This can produce a less specific terminal error and makes stale-node handling depend on the old response remaining parseable under the newer request. Inspect and authenticate response metadata at the proof boundary before shape-specific parsing, or otherwise preserve the stale-protocol classification for these responses.
- [SUGGESTION] packages/rs-sdk/src/platform/fetch.rs:180-197: Gate protocol-dependent query validation before encoding
(existing thread: https://github.com/dashpay/platform/pull/5561#discussion_r4364845472)
Both the rich query and wire request are encoded before `ensure_network_serves` runs. The document-query encoder rejects protocol-14 grammar such as `contains`/`containsAny`, time ranges, and integer ranges when a fresh SDK is still using protocol 13, including when those clauses are inside composite or chained queries. Such a valid protocol-14 query returns `Error::Config` before the SDK can probe a network already running protocol 14, and it is never re-encoded with the learned basis. Surface the protocol requirement before version-dependent validation or defer and repeat encoding after a successful probe.

Basic explanation
What this does: The SDK no longer sends a request that only protocol 14 nodes serve until it has proof that the network runs protocol 14. Before that, it refuses the request locally with a new error,
ProtocolVersionNotActive, and no node is banned. When the network may have moved on since the SDK last heard from it, the SDK first asks for the genesis epoch (one proved query) and then decides.Value: While mainnet runs protocol 13 with a mix of 4.1.2 and 5.0 nodes, a 5.0 SDK calling one of the 13 new query methods, a composite or chained documents query, or a token shielded pool query bans up to four honest nodes per call, for every method, for up to 24 hours. Apps (DET, wallets, dApps) can now detect the refusal by its kind and hide the feature until protocol 14 activates. Once it does, the same call works.
Risks: SDK behaviour only. No consensus, state or server change. Configurations that today send these requests unverified or with a pin now refuse them: an SDK pinned below 14, an SDK without a context provider, and a proofs-off SDK whose context provider cannot supply quorum keys (see Breaking Changes). Each gated call costs one extra proved
getEpochsInforound trip until the SDK has verified a protocol 14 answer.Issue being fixed or feature implemented
A 4.1.2 node does not know what protocol 14 added to the request side:
getIdentityKeysRemainingBudgets, getDataContractsLatestVersions, getDataContractsByRange, the contract group, moderation, team-action and fee-pot queries)UNIMPLEMENTEDgetDocumentsV1 withsub_queries(composite) orchainedError::Proof→ bantoken_idA protocol version does not identify a binary: at protocol 13 a node may be 4.1.2 or 5.0. Only an answer signed at 14, which no 4.1.2 node can produce, proves that every honest node serves these requests.
The server-side counterpart (5.0 nodes at protocol 13 answering "not active yet" with INVALID_ARGUMENT instead of UNKNOWN) is a separate PR. This one does not depend on it.
What was done?
rs-dapi-client: each request declares what it needs.
TransportRequest::needs_protocol_version()returns the lowest protocol version at which every node serves the request as asked, orNone. It is declared through a newneeds_protocol_version:key inimpl_transport_request_grpc!:GetDocumentsRequestV1 whenchainedis set orsub_queriesis not empty;token_idis set. Credit-pool requests are byte-identical to what 4.1 SDKs send, wallet shielded sync depends on them, and they stay ungated.delegate_transport_request_variant!enums forward the declaration of the request they wrap.rs-sdk: the check. It runs once per call in the
Fetch,FetchManyandFetchUnprovedpaths, after the wire request is encoded and beforeretry():min(stored version, verified version) >= required. The verified version is the highest protocol version of an answer whose proof, quorum signature and freshness were verified. It is never seeded, pinned or persisted. This is the rule that already selects the non-unique lookup's V1 (fix(sdk)!: version the non-unique identity lookup so 4.1 clients keep working #5515), and both now take it from one helper,QuerySettings::network_protocol_basis().required, or has no context provider.Answer side. An answer to a gated request signed below the version comes from a node behind the activation. It returns
StaleNodeError::ProtocolVersion, so the node is banned and the call is retried elsewhere.FetchUnprovedreads answers with the version the SDK speaks after the check, as the proved paths already do at verification time, so a contract that only protocol 14 rules parse is read correctly on the first call after a probe.New error.
Error::ProtocolVersionNotActive { method, required, network, pinned, cause }, not retryable.pinned: the SDK is pinned belowrequired, so no answer can lift the refusal.cause: the probe's error, when the probe failed.Error::is_transient_protocol_version_refusal(): true only when the probe failed for a reason that can pass (nodes, a quorum source or a quorum not answering yet), so the network may already serve the request. False for the SDK's own setup: no context provider, or one that cannot give quorum keys at all (e.g. a non-trusted EvoSDK).WasmSdkErrorKind::ProtocolVersionNotActive, appended so existing numbers stay stable.isRetriablefollowsis_transient_protocol_version_refusal.ProtocolError, or toNetworkErrorwhen the refusal is transient.StaleNodeerrors, including the newStaleNodeError::ProtocolVersion, now map toNetworkErrorinstead of falling through to the "protocol" substring.Protocol versions are learned only from answers the SDK verified.
Sdk::verify_response_metadata(public) now only checks freshness, and changes neither the stored nor the verified version. Since fix(sdk)!: version the non-unique identity lookup so 4.1 clients keep working #5515 it had recorded caller-supplied metadata as verified: the only way to open this gate, or the V1 selector, without a quorum signature.Tests and docs.
