Issue being fixed or feature implemented

The SDK rebuilds document queries (documents, counts, sums, averages and their split forms, ranked, having, composite and chained) with the rules of its own protocol version. A node that has not caught up to a protocol upgrade signs its answer with an older protocol version and built it with that version's rules. The SDK now refuses such an answer and retries the query on another node. Until a verified answer has shown the network running the SDK's protocol version, the node that sent it is not banned for it, and the SDK reports a configuration error only when no node answers at its version.

This only matters when the SDK is set to a newer protocol version than the answering node is on. That happens with a node that has not yet caught up to a protocol upgrade, or with an application that set the SDK to a protocol version newer than its network currently runs. Other queries, state-transition results (#5541) and identity lookups (#5515) are unchanged, and so are SDKs whose version matches the network. A later release will rebuild these queries with the answering node's version, so such answers verify instead of being retried.

What was done?

  • drive-proof-verifier: every verifier that rebuilds a document query from a GetDocumentsResponse proof (the generic Documents and DocumentCount impls and the 19 exported verify_*_proof functions) reads its proof bytes only through document_query_proof_bytes, which first checks the protocol version in the response metadata and then returns the validated GroveDB proof bytes. It accepts an answer named at the verifier's version, or at a version newer than this build knows when verifying with PlatformVersion::latest(). Otherwise it returns the new Error::ProofProtocolVersionMismatch { signed, verifier } before the proof is read. The version check is private to verify.rs, so a document verifier gets it by reading its proof. The exported functions' rustdoc says which version to pass.
  • dash-sdk: once a verified answer has shown the network running the SDK's protocol version, that error stays Error::Proof: retryable, so the request moves to another node, which is banned as for other unusable answers. Before that it becomes the new StaleNodeError::ProtocolVersion, also retryable: the request moves to another node, but the SDK's retry loop does not ban the one that answered (it takes the path a retryable failure takes when banning is disabled, which moves the node out of the rotation and leaves its ban state as it was). A request whose every attempt ends with that error fails with Error::Config, so an SDK set to a newer protocol version than its network runs still gets a configuration error and bans no node; if some attempts failed in other ways, the last error is reported as it is. An answer outside the SDK's height or time tolerance fails as stale (StaleNodeError::Height, StaleNodeError::Time) and its node is banned; its height is compared with the height mark as it was when the response arrived, without raising it. An answer naming no protocol version (0) is malformed whatever the network runs: it stays Error::Proof and its node is banned. The classification applies on the network and mock proof paths. Nothing is learned from a refused answer: the stored version, the verified version and the height mark stay as they were.
  • dash-sdk, verified versions: a verified fresh answer now records its protocol version as verified before it raises the stored version (and before the protocol-version observer runs). The stored version is raised with Release and read with Acquire, so a query that reads the raised version also sees the verified one.
  • Offline vectors: the recorded document vectors are signed at protocol 12, so the four rs-sdk and three rs-sdk-ffi tests that replay them now seed the SDK at 12. Config::setup_api_with_initial_version serves rs-sdk. A Rust-only, #[doc(hidden)] create_mock_handle_with_initial_version serves rs-sdk-ffi; it is not part of the C API, and cbindgen does not export it.
  • Fixture: rs-drive-proof-verifier/tests/vectors/document-outcome/pv14-documents-response.bin, a getDocuments answer signed by the test quorum at protocol 14, exported deterministically by an ignored test in tests/document_query_signature.rs, so the SDK tests have a node that answers at the SDK's version.
  • CI: the PR test job (tests-rs-workspace.yml) now also runs the drive-proof-verifier tests, in both the non-shielded and the shielded phase. Until now no CI job ran them; the nightly job only type-checks the crate. They are offline (vectors and locally signed fixtures).
  • Docs: book/src/sdk/fetch-traits.md (proof verification step) and book/src/sdk/put-operations.md describe the rule. Also, the js-evo-sdk README and the wasm withVersion doc no longer describe "latest" as the default protocol version: an SDK without a version follows the network's.

In-place changes to shipped generations: none (client-side only; no consensus, Drive or DAPI change).

How Has This Been Tested?

New tests:

  • rs-drive-proof-verifier/tests/document_query_signed_version.rs: a guard table with one row per guarded verifier (21). An answer named below, above, or without a version is refused. An answer at the verifier's version, or newer than this build at the latest rules, reaches proof verification. A source check splits the document verifier modules and the GetDocumentsResponse impls of proof.rs into functions and impls, and requires each to read proof bytes only through document_query_proof_bytes, once per signature check and before it.
  • rs-drive-proof-verifier/tests/document_query_signature.rs: a document answer signed by a test quorum verifies at its own version and is refused at a newer verifier version; changing its metadata version after signing fails the signature check.
  • rs-sdk/src/sdk/signed_version_tests.rs, on both proof paths:
    • classification: the retryable proof error once a verified answer has shown the SDK's version; StaleNodeError::ProtocolVersion, retryable and not banning, for pinned or seeded SDKs (fresh, or having verified only older answers); the stale height or time error for an answer outside the tolerance; and that nothing is learned in any case;
    • the retry loop, with one node per answer, each picked through the address list's rotation:
      • a fresh SDK, pinned or seeded, whose first node answers at an older version gets the documents from the next node, which sends an answer signed at the SDK's version, and neither node is banned;
      • when every node answers at an older version, all of them are asked, none is banned, and the query fails with Error::Config;
      • once the network has shown the SDK's version, the node answering at an older version is banned and the next one serves the query, and when every node answers so, every node is banned and the query fails with the retryable proof error;
      • a stale node answering at an older version is banned and the next one serves the query;
      • a node answering without a protocol version is banned and the next one serves the query;
    • the verified version is recorded before the stored version is raised.
  • rs-sdk/src/sync.rs: the Config conversion also applies when the request then finds no node left to ask, and does not apply when other attempts failed in other ways.

Red → green, shown locally only: with the version check turned into a no-op, the guard table (4 of 6 tests), the refusal at a newer verifier version, and both SDK classification tests fail; they pass once the check is restored. The stale-answer test failed before its fix (the answer got Error::Config), and the ordering test failed before its fix (the observer saw verified version 0). Mutation checks were also caught: an exact match weakened to >= or <=, a comparison against the latest version instead of the verifier's, the newer-version fallback removed, one guard removed, the classification always or never banning, and the classification dropped from either proof path.

For the retry handling, the new SDK tests run against the previous SDK code fail where they should: the query failed with Error::Config after the first node, so the next node was never asked; one node was asked instead of four; and a stale-height answer got Error::Config. The test where the network has shown the SDK's version passes on both, as that behaviour is unchanged. Mutations caught: never sparing the node, sparing every stale error, sparing it once the network has shown the SDK's version, sparing it without moving it out of the rotation, dropping the final Config conversion or applying it when other attempts failed in other ways, a height check that raises the height mark, and no height check. For the source check, an unchecked proof read, destructured proof bytes checked with verify_tenderdash_signature, an extra signature check before the accessor, and a signature check moved above the accessor with unchanged counts each fail it; the previous count-only check passed a guard moved below the signature check.

Unchanged and green: the #5541 and #5515 suites (signed_version_tests, identity_discovery_tests, tests/document_outcome.rs, tests/identity_discovery.rs) and tests/vectors_documents.rs.

Local runs (pasta, macOS arm64):

  • cargo fmt --all -- --check;
  • cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets --all-features --locked -- --no-deps -D warnings;
  • CI-equivalent tests with the CI profile env (RUST_MIN_STACK=4194304 CARGO_PROFILE_DEV_DEBUG=0 CARGO_PROFILE_DEV_CODEGEN_UNITS=256): cargo test --all-features --locked --lib --bins --tests --no-fail-fast -- --skip shield over the CI package list plus drive-proof-verifier and dash-platform-queries. Result: 20,236 passed, 0 failed, 67 ignored (shield-named tests skipped, as in CI).
  • After the review follow-up commits, the same env over dash-sdk, drive-proof-verifier, dash-platform-queries, rs-sdk-ffi, platform-wallet, platform-wallet-ffi and platform-wallet-storage: 4,178 passed, 0 failed, 37 ignored; the 8 shield-named drive-proof-verifier tests pass with the shielded phase's command.
  • After the retry-handling follow-up, the same env: fmt and workspace clippy as above; drive-proof-verifier with all features 404 passed, 0 failed, 3 ignored (the fixture exporters); dash-sdk lib 355 passed, 0 failed; dash-sdk document vectors 5 passed, 1 ignored; rs-sdk-ffi document tests 3 passed.

Breaking Changes

None at the protocol level. API changes: drive_proof_verifier::Error gains the ProofProtocolVersionMismatch variant, and dash_sdk::error::StaleNodeError gains the ProtocolVersion variant. Neither enum is #[non_exhaustive], so downstream exhaustive matches need a new arm. Direct callers of the document verify functions and of the generic Documents/DocumentCount FromProof impls must pass the protocol version named in the response metadata (or PlatformVersion::latest() when it names a newer one). Following the book's convention, ! is reserved for consensus-breaking changes, so the title has none.

Behaviour visible to SDK users: an SDK pinned or seeded to a newer protocol version than its network runs now gets Error::Config for document queries, once every attempt its retry settings allow has been answered below its version, until a verified answer shows the network at that version. With the default settings that is four requests per query instead of one, and the nodes asked leave the rotation without a ban. Other queries keep working, and no node is banned.

Follow-ups (not in this PR)

  • The mock SDK seed is reachable only from Rust tests (create_mock_handle_with_initial_version), not from C or Swift. A mock SDK that has used expectations raises its stored version without recording a verified one.
  • The new signed-answer test repeats Drive fixture setup from tests/document_outcome.rs; share it once those fixtures move.
  • dash-platform-queries tests still run in no PR CI job.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Document-query proofs are now checked against the protocol version recorded in the signed response. Responses with incompatible versions are rejected rather than verified under mismatched rules.
    • The SDK can retry requests against another node when it receives an older-version response. If no verified response establishes the network’s version and all attempts return older-version answers, the request reports a configuration error.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified that JavaScript and WebAssembly SDKs follow the network’s protocol version when no version is specified.
    • Updated guidance on protocol-version handling and document-query verification.

…ol version

Document query verifiers (documents, counts, sums, averages and their split
forms, ranked, having, composite and chained) rebuild the query with the rules
of the protocol version they verify with. They now check an answer only when
its metadata names that version, or a version newer than this build knows when
verifying with the newest rules, and otherwise return the new
drive_proof_verifier::Error::ProofProtocolVersionMismatch before reading the
proof.

The SDK retries such an answer on another node once a verified answer has shown
the network running the SDK's protocol version. Before that it fails the query
with Error::Config and excludes no node, which is what an SDK set to a newer
protocol version than its network runs gets. Nothing is learned from a refused
answer. Other queries, state-transition results and identity lookups are
unchanged.

The recorded offline document vectors are signed at protocol 12, so the rs-sdk
and rs-sdk-ffi tests that replay them now seed the SDK there; rs-sdk-ffi gains
a Rust-only, doc-hidden mock constructor that takes the seed. The PR test job
now also runs the drive-proof-verifier tests. The js-evo-sdk README and the
wasm withVersion doc no longer describe "latest" as the default protocol
version.

Test: an answer signed below the verifier's protocol version is refused
(✖ before, ✔ after). Shown locally by turning the version check into a no-op:
the guard table, the signed-answer refusal and both SDK classification tests
fail, and pass once the check is restored.

📝 Walkthrough

Document-query proof verification now checks signed protocol versions. The SDK classifies older-version responses using freshness and verified-version state, then applies retry and responder-ban rules. Test helpers support SDKs initialized at recorded protocol versions.

A shared proof-byte accessor checks the signed protocol version against the verifier version. Document, count, sum, ranked, having, composite, and chained verifiers use it. Tests cover signed-version behavior and signature validation. Both workspace test phases now include drive-proof-verifier.

The SDK separates response freshness checks from verified-version learning. It classifies lower-version mismatches using verified-version state and freshness metadata. Tests cover learning state and mock and network response paths.
Retry older-version responses
packages/rs-sdk/src/sync.rs, book/src/sdk/fetch-traits.md, book/src/sdk/put-operations.md
Retry handling can spare a responder for protocol-version errors. When every failed attempt spares its responder, exhaustion converts the final error to a configuration error. The documentation describes the retry behavior and freshness checks.
Initialize SDKs at recorded versions
packages/rs-sdk-ffi/src/sdk.rs, packages/rs-sdk-ffi/tests/integration_tests/*, packages/rs-sdk/tests/fetch/*, packages/js-evo-sdk/README.md, packages/wasm-sdk/src/sdk.rs
Test helpers accept an initial platform version, and document tests use recorded versions. JavaScript and WASM SDK documentation says an unset version follows the network protocol version.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 299c8

An answer that carries no protocol version is treated like an older-version answer, so the faulty node is not banned. If all nodes do this, the request fails with a configuration error that points at SDK settings instead of the nodes. This is a small edge case with a one-line fix, and merging is low risk.

…sion is verified

Before any verified answer has shown the network running the SDK's protocol
version, a document answer signed below it fails the query with Error::Config
and excludes no node. An answer whose time is outside the SDK's time tolerance
now fails as stale (StaleNodeError::Time) instead: it is retried on another
node, and the stale node is banned as for any other stale answer. Answers from
nodes keeping up with the network are fresh, so an SDK set ahead of its network
still fails at once without excluding nodes.

Test: a fresh SDK seeded above the answer's version gets a retryable stale
error for an answer outside the time tolerance, and Error::Config for a fresh
one, on both proof paths (✖ before: the stale answer got Error::Config;
✔ after).

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…red one

A verified fresh answer raised the stored protocol version, and ran the
protocol-version observer, before it recorded the version as verified. A
document query reading the raised stored version in between could then be
classified as if no answer had shown the network at that version, and fail at
once instead of moving to another node.

The freshness checks now run first, then the version is recorded as verified,
then the stored version is raised. The stored version is raised with Release and
read with Acquire, so a reader that sees the raised version also sees the
verified version recorded before it.

Test: the observer, which runs as the stored version is raised, sees the
verified version already recorded (✖ before: it saw 0; ✔ after).

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The non-shielded phase now runs the drive-proof-verifier tests, but its filter
leaves out the crate's shield-named tests, and the shielded phase did not list
the crate, so no job ran them. Add it to the shielded phase as well.

No behaviour change; the 8 tests pass locally with the phase's command.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…d remedy

The configuration error for a document answer signed below the SDK's
protocol version now also names seeding the SDK with the network's version
(with_initial_version), which fits an SDK that was given a version it did not
choose, such as a persisted seed or the devnet default.

The book now says which document answers are not verified, those signed at an
older version than the SDK's, rather than requiring every answer to be signed
at the verifier's version: an answer signed by a version newer than the build
knows is still verified with the newest rules. It also notes that a stale
answer is retried.

Message and documentation only; no test change.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…module content

The guard scan matched one spelling of the signature-check call, and only in
modules named after documents. It now checks every proof module that uses
document query types, matches any spelling or formatting of the call, and also
checks proof.rs, where each GetDocumentsResponse impl must carry the guard.

Test only. Removing the Documents guard in proof.rs, which the previous scan
did not see, now fails it (✖ with the guard removed, ✔ with it restored).

Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2

The document-query version guard is applied across the reviewed verifier paths, but the SDK now makes a non-retryable decision from response metadata before the quorum signature is verified. A malicious or malfunctioning DAPI node can therefore make a fresh SDK fail with Error::Config instead of retrying another node. Rust workspace tests and one browser test were still in progress in the supplied CI snapshot.

🟡 Suggestion: Synchronize verified-version evidence used for mismatch classification
packages/rs-sdk/src/sdk.rs:511-513

verified_protocol_version is shared across SDK clones and concurrent requests, but it is written and read with Ordering::Relaxed. In particular, a pinned SDK does not update protocol_version, so the Release/Acquire ordering on the separate stored-version atomic cannot publish the verified evidence. A concurrent document query can therefore observe an older verified version and return non-retryable Error::Config even though another request has already verified the SDK's version. Use an explicit Release/Acquire strategy for this evidence atomic, or otherwise make the classification read a value whose synchronization is guaranteed for both pinned and auto-detected SDKs.

  `ProofProtocolVersionMismatch` is returned by `ensure_proof_signed_at_verifier_version` before the proof bytes are interpreted and before `verify_tenderdash_proof` authenticates the quorum-signed metadata. The network path passes the response metadata directly into `classify_verifier_error`, so a malicious or malfunctioning DAPI node can set `protocol_version` below the SDK's version and cause this branch to return `Error::Config` while the SDK has no verified evidence at that version. `Error::Config` is non-retryable and does not ban the responder, allowing one endpoint to prevent the SDK from trying other configured nodes during bootstrap or when the SDK is seeded or pinned ahead of the network. Keep an unauthenticated mismatch retryable, or authenticate the response/version before using it to make the non-retryable configuration decision.
- [SUGGESTION] packages/rs-sdk/src/sdk.rs:575-579: Apply height freshness checks to refused document answers
  `freshness_criteria` can require height freshness independently of time freshness, but this mismatch path checks only `verify_metadata_time`. With a configured trusted initial height and no time tolerance, or when the response is far behind the observed height, an older-protocol answer is converted to `Error::Config` instead of `StaleNodeError::Height`; the node is consequently not retried or excluded. Add a non-mutating height comparison using the arrival height captured by `verify_fetching_quorum_key`, while ensuring that unverified metadata cannot advance the SDK's high-water mark.
- [SUGGESTION] packages/rs-sdk/src/sdk.rs:511-513: Synchronize verified-version evidence used for mismatch classification
  `verified_protocol_version` is shared across SDK clones and concurrent requests, but it is written and read with `Ordering::Relaxed`. In particular, a pinned SDK does not update `protocol_version`, so the Release/Acquire ordering on the separate stored-version atomic cannot publish the verified evidence. A concurrent document query can therefore observe an older verified version and return non-retryable `Error::Config` even though another request has already verified the SDK's version. Use an explicit Release/Acquire strategy for this evidence atomic, or otherwise make the classification read a value whose synchronization is guaranteed for both pinned and auto-detected SDKs.

In `packages/rs-drive-proof-verifier/src/verify.rs`:
- [SUGGESTION] packages/rs-drive-proof-verifier/src/verify.rs:72-85: Centralize the document-proof version guard at the proof-byte boundary
  Each document verifier manually calls `ensure_proof_signed_at_verifier_version` before obtaining proof bytes, and the PR relies on a source-text count test to detect omissions. A future verifier can compile while omitting the guard or placing it after proof interpretation, silently recreating the version-mismatch problem. Provide a shared checked-proof-bytes accessor that performs the version check and then returns the validated GroveDB proof bytes, and use it from the document verifier entry points so the trust invariant is enforced by construction rather than by repeated call-site discipline.

In `packages/rs-drive-proof-verifier/tests/document_query_signed_version.rs`:
- [SUGGESTION] packages/rs-drive-proof-verifier/tests/document_query_signed_version.rs:505-528: Make the guard-coverage test verify ordering, not only call counts
  `should_guard_every_document_query_signature_check` asserts that each document verifier has the same number of guard and `verify_tenderdash_proof` calls, but it does not assert that the guard precedes proof-byte access or signature verification. A future guard moved below `supported_grovedb_proof_bytes` or the query's proof interpretation would still satisfy this test. Until the checked-proof-bytes accessor is introduced, the test should validate guard ordering for every guarded verifier, not just equal counts.

…after the version check

Every verifier that rebuilds a document query from a GetDocumentsResponse
proof now reads its proof bytes through document_query_proof_bytes. That
accessor checks the protocol version in the response metadata, then returns
the validated GroveDB proof bytes. The version check is private to
verify.rs, so the 21 document verifiers get it by reading their proof, not
by a separate call at each site. No public signature changes.

The source check that covers every document verifier now splits the
verifier modules, and the GetDocumentsResponse impls of proof.rs, into
functions and impls. Each one must read proof bytes only through the
accessor, once per signature check (verify_tenderdash_proof or
verify_tenderdash_signature) and before it.

Test: the guard table and the signature tests pass unchanged. Each of these
mutations of a document verifier fails the new source check (✖):
- an unchecked proof read;
- destructured proof bytes checked with verify_tenderdash_signature;
- an extra signature check before the accessor;
- a signature check moved above the accessor, with the counts unchanged.
The previous count-only check still passed with the guard moved below the
signature check.

…ther node

Until a verified answer has shown the network running the SDK's protocol
version, a document query answer at an older version was a non-retryable
configuration error. That was decided from response metadata before its
signature was checked, so one node's answer could end the request while
other nodes would serve it.

Such an answer is now StaleNodeError::ProtocolVersion, which is retryable.
The SDK's retry loop moves the request to another node without banning the
one that answered. For this error it takes the path a retryable failure
takes when banning is disabled: the node leaves the rotation and its ban
state stays as it was. A request whose every attempt ends with this error
fails with the same Error::Config message as before. Once a verified answer
has shown the network running the SDK's version, the refusal stays
Error::Proof, retryable and banning.

The refused answer's height is now also checked against the height mark as
it was when the response arrived, and the mark is not raised. A stale height
fails as StaleNodeError::Height, retryable and banning, as a stale time
already failed as StaleNodeError::Time.

A deterministic getDocuments answer signed by the test quorum at protocol 14
(tests/vectors/document-outcome/pv14-documents-response.bin, exported by an
ignored test) gives the SDK tests a node that answers at the SDK's version.

Test would have caught this: ✖ against the previous SDK code, ✔ with this
change.
- A fresh SDK, pinned or seeded, whose first node answers at an older
  version and whose next node sends a signed answer at the SDK's version gets
  the documents from the next node, and neither node is banned. Before, the
  query failed with Config after the first node.
- When every node answers at an older version, every node is asked, none is
  banned, and the query fails with Error::Config. Before, one node was asked.
- A stale-height answer is StaleNodeError::Height, and its node is banned.
  Before, it got Config.
The tests where the network has already shown the SDK's version pass on
both, since that behaviour is unchanged.

Mutations caught:
- never sparing the node;
- sparing every stale error;
- sparing it once the network has shown the version;
- dropping the final Config conversion, or applying it when other attempts
  failed in other ways;
- sparing the node without moving it out of the rotation;
- a height check that raises the mark;
- no height check.

A document answer whose metadata names protocol version 0 is malformed,
whatever protocol version the network runs, so it says nothing about an
SDK set ahead of its network. It was spared like an answer at an older
version: its node was never banned, and a request whose every attempt got
it ended in a configuration error naming protocol version 0. It now stays
Error::Proof, so its node is banned as for any unusable proof and the
request moves on.

Test would have caught this: should_ban_nodes_answering_without_a_protocol_version
✖ before (StaleNode(ProtocolVersion { received_protocol_version: 0 })),
✔ after (Error::Proof, the node is banned and the next node serves the
query).

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2

The document-proof version guard, retry classification, freshness handling, and malformed-version handling are correct at this head. Three non-blocking issues remain: relaxed publication of verified-version evidence for pinned or already-seeded SDKs, loss of configuration-error classification across WASM/FFI retry envelopes, and unmarked public API-breaking error-enum additions. No changed-code CI check is failing; Kotlin SDK and policy/PR Hygiene checks are still pending.

packages/rs-sdk/src/sdk.rs:511-513

The verified protocol version is written with Ordering::Relaxed and read with Ordering::Relaxed by classify_verifier_error; query_settings also reads it with Relaxed. The Release/Acquire ordering on protocol_version only publishes this evidence when an unpinned SDK raises its stored version. Pinned SDKs and unpinned SDKs already seeded at the received version return from maybe_update_protocol_version before that release, so a concurrent query can still observe the old verified value and classify an older answer as an unverified bootstrap mismatch after another query has verified the SDK's version. Publish the verified-version update with Release semantics and pair every decision-making read with Acquire semantics, then add coverage for concurrent pinned or equal-seeded SDKs.

  When every attempt is a spared ProtocolVersion failure, this new retry path converts the final error to Error::Config, but it can then wrap that value in NoAvailableAddressesToRetry when the address rotation is exhausted. The WASM conversion at packages/wasm-sdk/src/error.rs:275-280 maps every such wrapper to DapiClientError, and the C FFI conversion at packages/rs-sdk-ffi/src/error.rs:246-258 maps it to NetworkError. Consequently JavaScript, Swift, and Kotlin callers can see a protocol-version configuration mismatch as a transport failure, while the direct Config path is classified differently again by the FFI string fallback. Inspect the nested error before the generic exhausted-address mapping and expose a consistent non-retryable configuration/protocol category across both bindings.

Neither enum is marked non_exhaustive, so downstream crates with exhaustive matches stop compiling. The PR documents the API impact but does not mark the change as breaking in the conventional commit or release metadata; repository precedent uses ! for public API-breaking changes as well as consensus changes. Record the break in the release metadata and handle the package release semver accordingly, or deliberately adopt non_exhaustive error enums.
