Issue being fixed or feature implemented

Cargo builds every top-level file in packages/rs-platform-wallet-storage/tests/ as its own test binary, and each binary statically links the crate's whole dependency graph: dpp, drive, grovedb, RocksDB, SQLite and the rest. The crate has 75 such files, 43 of them added by #3968, so the Rust workspace job builds and links 77 storage test binaries.

That's about half the job's test build. From a cargo --timings run of the CI test build on the Mac Linux ARM64 runner (8 vCPUs, 24 GiB):

Crate Test binaries Build time (unit-seconds)
platform-wallet-storage 77 3,887 (53% of the total)
platform-wallet-ffi 3 506
drive-abci 7 436
dpp 2 317
drive 8 268

With GNU ld, each of those links peaked at 2–3.3 GB of RSS, even for a 38 MB test binary. Eight of them at once pushed the 24 GiB machine into swap. A warm test build that recompiled 43 crates spent 70 s compiling and then about 14 minutes linking. The Ubuntu runners absorb the same 77 links with more cores and memory, but they pay for them too.

What was done?

  • The 75 files move to tests/integration/ as modules of one test crate (tests/integration/main.rs). The shared helpers become its common module, so mod common; in each file becomes use crate::common;.
  • Test bodies are unchanged. Each file keeps its #![cfg(feature = …)] and #![allow(…)] attributes, which now apply to its module.
  • The include_str! paths into src/ get one more ../. Docs and comments that name the moved files (SECRETS.md, src/secrets, src/sqlite/schema/dashpay.rs) now point at tests/integration/.
  • tests/fixtures/ stays where it is; tests reach it through CARGO_MANIFEST_DIR.

Visible changes:

  • Test names gain the file name as a module prefix, e.g. sqlite_delete_wallet::… under the integration binary. Run one file's tests with cargo test -p platform-wallet-storage --test integration sqlite_delete_wallet::.
  • Under plain cargo test, tests from different files now share one process. nextest still runs each test in its own process. None of these tests change process-wide state; they only change permissions on their own temporary directories.
  • A new test file must be declared in tests/integration/main.rs; main.rs says so.

How Has This Been Tested?

Before / after on the Mac Linux ARM64 runner (8 vCPUs, 24 GiB, GNU ld). Same machine and warm target/; each commit gets a warm-up build first. Then packages/rs-dpp/src/lib.rs is touched, as a new commit would, and cargo nextest run --no-run -p platform-wallet-storage --all-features --locked is timed:

Base (36c964f) This PR (65e85c4)
Storage test binaries built 77 3
Test build after touching dpp 4m 35s 42 s
Lowest free memory during the build (vmstat, 5 s samples) 182 MB 11.5 GB

That's this crate alone. In the full workspace job its 77 links run alongside every other crate's, which is where the machine went into swap.

  • cargo test -p platform-wallet-storage --all-features --test integration (macOS): 546 passed, 1 ignored (fixture_gen::regenerate_v4_2_dev_fixture, ignored by design).
  • The test list matches CI: all 540 storage integration tests that ran in today's Rust workspace job are present under their new names. The other 7 in the list weren't run by CI before this change either: the ignored one, and six whose names contain shield, which the nextest step's not test(~shield) filter excludes. This change doesn't alter which tests that filter selects.
  • cargo clippy -p platform-wallet-storage --all-features --all-targets -- -D warnings and cargo fmt --all -- --check are clean.
  • The test build now produces 3 executables for the crate (library, CLI, integration) instead of 77.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Updated test references and fixture-generation guidance to match the integration test layout.
  • Tests
    • Consolidated integration tests around shared helpers and a single test entry point. Existing test scenarios and runtime behavior remain unchanged.

Cargo builds every top-level file in tests/ as its own test binary, and
each one statically links the crate's whole dependency graph (dpp, drive,
grovedb, RocksDB, SQLite). With 75 such files, the 77 storage test
binaries were about half of the Rust workspace job's test build. On a
Linux runner with GNU ld, linking them eight at a time took about 3 GB of
memory per link and pushed a 24 GiB machine into swap.

The files move to tests/integration/ as modules of one test crate, with
the shared helpers as its `common` module. Test bodies are unchanged; test
names gain the file's name as a module prefix. The include_str!
paths into src/ and the docs and comments that name the files follow the
move.

Use --test integration for fixture regeneration.

fixture_gen.rs is now a module of the integration test binary, not a standalone Cargo test target. The documented --test fixture_gen selection therefore fails before the ignored generator runs.

…ration binary

fixture_gen is now a module of the integration test binary, so the
documented `--test fixture_gen` target no longer exists.

Fixed in 65e85c4: the regeneration command now reads cargo test -p platform-wallet-storage --test integration fixture_gen:: -- --ignored. The fixture_gen:: filter keeps it to that one ignored test; --list with that selection returns only fixture_gen::regenerate_v4_2_dev_fixture. No other file in the crate documents a per-file --test target.

Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2

Verified the exact head and confirmed that all 75 former integration-test files are registered in the consolidated binary, with test bodies, feature gates, and helper logic preserved. One documentation nitpick remains: a persister helper still references the old shared-helper path. Validation was static only; the supplied CI snapshot reports successful Rust wallet tests, skipped Rust workspace tests, and pending policy/hygiene checks.

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2

At head 7cd9e30, static verification confirms that all 75 integration-test files are declared in the consolidated binary, with test bodies and feature gates preserved apart from the intended import, path, and documentation updates. No actionable in-scope defects remain, and the prior shared-helper documentation finding is fixed. No builds or tests were run locally; the supplied exact-head CI snapshot reports successful Linux wallet tests, skipped Rust workspace tests, and pending PR Hygiene.

…to the integration binary

#5392 added tests/persisted_core_transactions.rs as its own test crate,
loading the shared helpers with `mod common;`. #5397, merged after it,
moved those helpers to tests/integration/common and built the
integration tests as one binary, so the file's `mod common;` no longer
resolves: `cargo fmt --check --all` fails on v5.0-dev and the test does
not compile.

Move the file into tests/integration as a module of that binary, declared
in main.rs, using `crate::common` like the other modules, with its
fixture read from ../fixtures.

…ntegration binary

v5.1-dev now builds the storage integration tests as one binary (#5397);
a test file outside tests/integration/ would link the whole dependency
graph again as a binary of its own.
