primitives%refac!: introduce getter CodeQL rule, impl_new! macro for constructor generation, gate all inner values of encodable crate types - #89
This pull request is the first in a two-part series to funnel programmatic construction of encodable types through new() and prohibit access to underlying members. The current approach allows constructing invalid states and reading values that might not even exist depending on the version or variant of the type.
We are using the getset crate to handle most of the boilerplate for us for trivial cases and the newly introduced impl_new! macro for the same on the constructor side. In later pull requests we intend to tighten both the getters (when no valid result can be emitted) and the setter (refusing invalid combination of values in new()), with an earlier revision of this expressed through the Signable trait introduced in base-sdk#61.
Additional Information
Payloads that carry a signature do not use impl_new! to avoid undermining the Signable trait (i.e. by setting arbitrary signature values, effectively bypassing all trait-level checks). As impl_new! has been propagated to existing codec macros, the @no_new arm of codec_payload! specifically exists to allow opting out for the autogenerated constructor in situations like these where a manual constructor needs to be written..
Vec<T> fields currently return &Vec<T> rather than &[T], this is due to a limitation in getset and will be addressed in the future. Alternative crates are either too new or have not committed to stable API for us to be able to adopt them instead.
While working on this pull request, shadowing became enough of a recurring problem that clippy::same_name_method has been sent to deny workspace wide. See renames done below for examples of adjustments needed
OutPoint.hash field has been renamed to txid (shadowing Hashable::hash())
NetInfoV2.entries has been renamed to groups (shadowing NITrait::entries())
NetInfoV1's getter is written manually as service() as getset names tuple field getters get() and this could cause reasonable confusion.
too-many-arguments-threshold has been raised to 15 in clippy.toml as field-wise constructors take every field.
The markdown linter now permits repeated headings under different parents, this was not caught before as we didn't have multiple versions to report in the changelog but since that's no longer the case, the linter was unhappy, requiring a narrowing of existing rules.

📝 Summary
Summary by CodeRabbit
API Changes
Primitive types now provide constructors and getter methods for accessing their data. Many fields that were previously public are no longer directly accessible.
NetInfoV2 now uses groups in place of entries.
Added impl_new! for declaring named-field structs with generated constructors.
New Features
DynBitset::new validates bit counts, data length, and padding bits, returning a specific error for invalid input.
DynBitsetError is now available from the crate root.
The changes add impl_new! and update codec macros to declare structs and generate constructors. Many primitive wire types now use private fields with public getters, and affected callers use accessors and constructors. DynBitset::new centralizes validation used by serde deserialization. A CodeQL query and policy check getter access in eligible wire structs.

codec_type! generates Hashable::hash(&self) for OutPoint. Before this change, outpoint.hash() called that trait method. The new inherent getter takes precedence and returns the TxHash field instead. Callers that only encode or compare the result can change behavior without a compile error.

Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2
The refactor introduces two concrete blocking regressions: the generated OutPoint::hash() getter shadows the existing Hashable::hash() method, and the documentation samples still use fields made private by this PR. The independent samples lockfile is also stale for the new getset dependency; additional non-blocking issues affect global clippy configuration, API consistency, test coverage, and the missing Breaking Changes section. The Build site check has already failed while several other CI checks remain in progress.

🔴 Blocking: Migrate documentation samples to private-field getters and constructors docs/samples/parser/parser.rs:49
Block::transactions is private after this PR, but the parser sample still accesses block.transactions.iter(), which produces the reported Build site E0616 failure. The solver sample has the same migration gap: docs/samples/solver/solver.rs:45-61 still constructs Transaction, TxIn, OutPoint, and TxOut with struct literals, and :96-103 still constructs BlockHeader directly even though their fields are now private. Update both samples to use generated new constructors and getters; otherwise the documentation build cannot pass.

The title marks this PR as breaking, and the change privatizes public primitive fields while adding constructor/getter APIs and renaming the Rust-facing NetInfoV2 storage field. Triage: critical by gpt-6.1-sol (effort low) — The large refactor changes consensus primitive encoding and peer-facing network deserialization across transaction, block, payload, and header types, including pkgs/primitives/src/codec.rs and pkgs/p2p_core/src/msg/headers.rs.
These findings are from an automated code review. Verify each finding against the current code and only fix it if needed.
In `pkgs/primitives/src/transaction.rs`:
- [BLOCKING] pkgs/primitives/src/transaction.rs:47-48: Do not let the `hash` getter shadow `Hashable::hash`
The `codec_type!` expansion provides `Hashable::hash(&OutPoint) -> Hash256`, which hashes the serialized outpoint including its output index. The new inherent getter generated for the `hash` field provides `OutPoint::hash() -> TxHash`; inherent methods take precedence over trait methods in method-call syntax. Existing downstream code that previously called `outpoint.hash()` can therefore compile while changing from the canonical outpoint digest to only the embedded transaction ID, causing different output indices from one transaction to collide. Rename the storage field to `txid` and preserve the wire/serde name with `serde(rename = "hash")`, then update `is_null`, `Display`, and field accesses.

- [SUGGESTION] pkgs/primitives/Cargo.toml:60: Regenerate the independent samples lockfile for `getset`
`getset` is now a direct dependency of `dash-primitives`, but `docs/samples/Cargo.lock` has no `getset` package entry and its `dash-primitives` dependency list does not include it. The samples are a separate Cargo workspace, so a locked build of the samples will reject this stale lockfile. Regenerate and commit `docs/samples/Cargo.lock`; the current documentation script's unlocked build only masks the inconsistency by rewriting it.
In `clippy.toml`:
- [SUGGESTION] clippy.toml:1: Avoid raising the global too-many-arguments threshold
This new repository-wide configuration raises `clippy::too_many_arguments` to 15 solely to accommodate the generated `ProRegTx::new` constructor. That suppresses warnings for every 8–14 argument function in the workspace, including future code unrelated to this refactor. Keep the default threshold and apply a scoped `#[expect(clippy::too_many_arguments, reason = "...")]` to the one constructor that requires the flat generated signature.
In `pkgs/primitives/src/payload/quorum.rs`:
- [NITPICK] pkgs/primitives/src/payload/quorum.rs:144-146: Use a copy getter for `FinalCommitment::height`
`FinalCommitment::height` uses `#[getset(get = "pub")]` and therefore returns `&BlockHeight`, while the same `bitcoin_units::BlockHeight` type in `CoinbaseCommitment` uses `get_copy` and returns by value. Use `get_copy` here as well for a consistent scalar getter API.
In `pkgs/primitives/src/support.rs`:
- [SUGGESTION] pkgs/primitives/src/support.rs:150-170: Add direct tests for `DynBitset::new` validation errors
The new public constructor adds separate `NumBitsTooLarge`, `LengthMismatch`, and `PaddingSet` rejection paths, but the crate has no direct tests for them. Existing valid corpus decoding does not exercise these branches. Add focused tests for oversized counts, short and long byte images, and nonzero padding bits, including the serde error mapping that now delegates to this constructor.
