primitives%feat!: decode v24 special transactions as the reference implementation does - #88
The reference implementation (dashpay/dashv24.0.0-rc.3) reads several special transactions that dash-primitives refuses or reads differently:
Output values: the reference implementation reads an output value as any signed 64-bit amount, and the transaction check rejects a negative one or one above the money range with a reason for each. dash-primitives refused to decode such a transaction, so it could not report the reason.
Asset locks, asset unlocks and CbTx: the reference implementation accepts version 2 asset locks (whose credits may pay to a script hash) and version 2 asset unlocks. It gives a version 2 asset unlock a txid that leaves out its quorum signing info, and reads a version 4 CbTx that ends with a merkle root of the instance hashes of those asset unlocks, which its block check compares with the block. dash-primitives refused all of them and hashed version 2 asset unlocks in full, so the merkle root of a block holding one did not match.
Provider transactions: from version 3 the reference implementation reads a ProRegTx or ProUpRegTx with a list of owner payouts where the payout script was, and a ProRegTx with the shares of a shared collateral, a consent signature per share and the terms of an early dissolution. It checks both lists, puts the payouts in the message the collateral key signs, and reads three new provider transactions for shared masternodes: a dissolution (type 10), a share reward update (type 11) and a shared registrar update (type 12). dash-primitives read version 3 payloads in a layout the reference implementation refuses, so it refused the reference implementation's version 3 payloads and accepted bytes the reference implementation does not read. It carried types 10 to 12 as bytes, and its transaction check refused them as unknown.
This pull request reads each of them as the reference implementation does and checks them with its rules that need no chain context, in its order. Every claim comes with a corpus section generated by running a program against the reference implementation at the pin above. Each section is embedded with its program.

Decode output values as signed amounts
TxOut::value is an i64, as the reference implementation's amount is. Every value decodes, and Transaction::check rejects a negative value with bad-txns-vout-negative and one above MAX_MONEY with bad-txns-vout-toolarge, in the reference order. The asset lock credit range check reads the same range.
The txid of an asset unlock whose payload has the size of a valid one (145 bytes) and a version of 2 or above is the hash of its serialization with the last 132 bytes zeroed. Those bytes are the requested height, quorum hash and quorum signature, so re-signing keeps the txid. The rule reads the payload bytes only, before any validation and whatever the deployment state. The block merkle root uses this txid. Transaction::instance_hash returns the hash of the whole serialization, and Transaction::has_stable_txid tells the two apart.
A version 2 credit pays to a public key hash or a script hash, and any other script fails with bad-assetlocktx-script-pubkey. Version 1 keeps bad-assetlocktx-pubKeyHash. Refusing version 2 before v24 is active needs the chain and is left to the caller.
Version 4 ends with the merkle root of the instance hashes of the block's asset unlocks with a stable txid. Versions 1 to 4 pass the check, and 0 and 5 fail it. The version a block must use depends on the active deployments and is left to the caller.
After the merkle root and duplicate transaction checks, Block::check reads the payload of a first transaction of the coinbase type. If it decodes as a CbTx of version 4 or above, its asset unlock root must equal the merkle root of the instance hashes of the block's asset unlocks with a stable txid, in block order, or the block fails with bad-cbtx-assetunlockmerkleroot. The reference implementation reports this as a mutated block, as it does the two checks before it. The rule runs before the size and coinbase checks. Block::asset_unlock_merkle_root computes the root.
Read version 3 ProRegTx and ProUpRegTx in the v24 layout
From version 3 a list of owner payouts, each a script and its part of the owner reward in basis points, takes the place of the payout script, which is then empty. A version 3 ProRegTx follows it with its collateral shares (amount, refund script, reward script, owner key id), one 65-byte consent signature per share with no count of its own, the early dissolution period in blocks and the early penalty in duffs. Each list starts with a one-byte count. Encoding writes the consent signatures as held, so a ProRegTx with a signature count other than its share count does not read back. The rejected section holds three version 3 Evo registrations the reference implementation does not read as a ProRegTx; they fail to decode here too.

Check version 3 payout and share lists as the reference implementation does
Owner payouts number one to eight. Each takes 100 to 10000 basis points, the parts sum to 10000, and each script is a distinct P2PKH or P2SH. A P2PKH payout may not pay the owner or voting key; a P2SH payout is not compared with them. A version 1 or 2 payout script is checked as a single payout of 10000. A shared ProRegTx has its collateral among its own outputs, no owner key and no payouts. Its two to eight shares each hold 100 DASH up to the collateral of the masternode type (1000 DASH, or 4000 DASH for Evo) and sum to it. Owner keys are non-null and distinct, refund scripts are distinct, and the refund and reward scripts are P2PKH or P2SH, and a P2PKH one pays neither the voting key nor any share's owner key; an empty reward script is not checked. The early period is at most 420480 blocks, and the penalty is below the smallest share and zero without an early period. An unshared ProRegTx has no early terms. These rules run before the network info checks, in the reference order. A ProUpRegTx payout may not pay the voting key either.
ProRegTx::check refuses a payload whose join signatures are not one per share with JoinSigCountMismatch, and one with shares below version 3 with SharesVersionTooLow, before the share checks. The layout writes the shares and their signatures under one count, and only from version 3, so neither payload round-trips through its encoding. The reference implementation refuses to write a payload whose signatures are not one per share. Neither variant has a reason in the reference implementation.
ProRegTx::check and ProUpRegTx::check refuse a payload that sets a payout script from version 3, or payouts below it, with PayoutVersionMismatch, before the payout checks. The layout carries the payout list from version 3 and the payout script below it, so such a payload does not round-trip through its encoding. The variant has no reason in the reference implementation.
Build the version 3 ProRegTx sign string over its payouts
From version 3 the first field of the message the collateral key signs lists the payouts as address:reward, separated by commas, with the script in hex where it has no address.
Type 10 dissolves a shared masternode. It holds the ProTx hash, the index of the acting share and, after a one-byte count, 65-byte signatures: one by the acting share's owner, or one per share in share order. The check refuses none or more than eight.
Type 11 changes where one share's rewards go. It holds the ProTx hash, the share index, the reward script, the inputs hash and the share owner's signature, which must be 65 bytes; the script must be P2PKH or P2SH. Type 12 replaces the operator key (basic scheme) and the voting key of a shared masternode. Neither key may be null, and it carries one to eight 65-byte signatures after a one-byte count, one per share in share order.
ProDisTx, ProUpShareTx and ProUpSharedRegTx read their version as an integer, with the same layout at every version. Their checks first refuse any version but 1, with bad-prodis-version, bad-proupshare-version and bad-proupsharedreg-version, before their other rules.
The reference implementation's bad-protx-payee-dest and bad-protx-shares-payee-dest follow a check that the script is P2PKH or P2SH, and every such script has a destination, so neither reason has a variant here.
Breaking Changes
Changes below for dash-primitives.
TxOut::value is an i64 (duffs) instead of an Amount. Its serde form is that integer. A value in coins is no longer read, and a negative or oversized value is.
Transaction::check returns the new TxInvalid::OutputNegative for a negative output value. TxInvalid::OutputTooLarge and TxInvalid::OutputTotalTooLarge carry an i64.
Transaction::hash of an asset unlock with a 145-byte payload of version 2 or above is its stable txid. The leaf of that transaction in Block::check's merkle root is therefore the stable txid too.
AssetLock::check accepts version 2 and returns the new AssetLockInvalid::CreditBadScript.
AssetUnlock::check accepts version 2.
CoinbaseCommitment has the new public field merkle_root_asset_unlocks, read for version 4 and above, and CoinbaseCommitment::check accepts version 4. Its JSON gains merkleRootAssetUnlocks, which is null below version 4.
Block::check returns the new BlockInvalid::BadAssetUnlockMerkleRoot for a block whose version 4 CbTx does not commit to the instance hashes of its asset unlocks with a stable txid, right after the duplicate transaction check. The new Block::asset_unlock_merkle_root returns that root.
ProRegTx has the new public fields payouts, shares, join_sigs, early_period_blocks and early_penalty, and ProUpRegTx has payouts. They are read for version 3, where script_payout is not read and stays empty. Their JSON gains the matching fields, which default to empty or zero when absent. A version 3 payload that does not fit this layout no longer decodes.
ProRegTx::check and ProUpRegTx::check apply the payout and share list rules and return the new ProTxInvalid variants BadPayoutCount, BadPayoutReward, DuplicatePayout, BadPayoutRewardSum, ExternalSharedCollateral, SharedOwnerKey, SharedPayouts, UnsharedEarlyTerms, BadShareCount, BadEarlyPeriod, BadShareAmount, NullShareKey, DuplicateShareKey, DuplicateShareRefund, BadShareScript, ShareKeyReuse, BadShareAmountSum and BadEarlyPenalty. A ProRegTx payout that pays the owner or voting key fails with PayoutKeyReuse before the network info checks, and a ProUpRegTx payout that pays the voting key fails with it too.
ProRegTx::check returns the new ProTxInvalid::JoinSigCountMismatch for a payload whose join signatures are not one per share, and the new ProTxInvalid::SharesVersionTooLow for one with shares below version 3, before the share checks.
ProRegTx::check and ProUpRegTx::check return the new ProTxInvalid::PayoutVersionMismatch for a payload that sets a payout script from version 3, or payouts below it, before the payout checks.
The Signable::payload of a version 3 ProRegTx covers its payout list.
TxType and SpecialPayload have the new variants ProviderDissolve, ProviderUpdateShare and ProviderUpdateSharedRegistrar, carrying the new ProDisTx, ProUpShareTx and ProUpSharedRegTx, where types 10 to 12 were Unknown. A payload of these types that does not decode as its type is refused. Transaction::check checks them instead of returning bad-txns-type, and their checks return the new ProTxInvalid variants BadDissolveSigCount, BadShareUpdateSigSize, BadShareUpdateScript and BadSharedRegistrarSigCount.
ProDisTx, ProUpShareTx and ProUpSharedRegTx read their version as a u16, and their checks return the new ProTxInvalid variants BadDissolveVersion, BadShareUpdateVersion and BadSharedRegistrarVersion for any version but 1, before their other rules.

An output value that is negative or above the money range failed to
decode. The reference reads any amount and rejects it in the check, so
`TxOut::value` is an `i64` and the negative value has its own reason.
Version 2 shares the version 1 layout, and the reference accepts it in
its context-free check. Refusing it before v24 is active needs the chain
and is left to the caller.
The txid of an asset unlock with a version 2 payload zeroes its quorum
signing info, as the reference does, so re-signing keeps it. The hash of
the whole serialization is `instance_hash()`.
Version 2 credits may pay to a script hash; other scripts fail with the
new `CreditBadScript`. Refusing version 2 before v24 is active needs the
chain and is left to the caller.
Version 4 ends with the merkle root of the block's asset unlocks with a
stable txid. It is read into `merkle_root_asset_unlocks`, and the check
accepts versions 1 to 4 as the reference does.
From version 3 both carry a list of owner payouts in place of the payout
script. ProRegTx then carries the collateral shares, their consent
signatures and the early dissolution terms.
Owner payouts and collateral shares are checked for count, rewards or
amounts, scripts and key reuse before the network info. ProUpRegTx also
refuses a payout to its voting key in versions 1 and 2.
Type 10 dissolves a shared masternode. It is read with one signature
per share, or one by the acting share's owner, and the check refuses
none or more than eight.
Type 11 moves a share's rewards to a key or script hash under the share
owner's signature. Type 12 replaces the operator and voting keys of a
shared masternode with one to eight share owner signatures.
A block whose version 4 coinbase payload does not commit to the
instance hashes of its version 2 asset unlocks now fails its check,
as in the reference implementation.
Added support for shared masternode registration, updates, reward changes, and dissolution.
Added version 2 asset-lock and asset-unlock payload support, plus version 4 coinbase commitments containing an asset-unlock Merkle root.
Added payout and collateral-sharing options for masternode registrations and updates.
Bug Fixes
Blocks are now rejected when a version 4 or later coinbase commitment contains an asset-unlock root that does not match the block.
Transaction output values and totals are checked against valid monetary limits.
Transaction outputs now use signed satoshi values, and stable asset-unlock transactions expose a full-serialization instance hash. Asset payload validation accepts version 2 under defined rules, and version 4 coinbase commitments carry an asset-unlock Merkle root that block validation checks. Provider payloads add shared payouts and collateral shares, update registration payload formats, and support transaction types 10–12 for dissolution and share updates.
This change aligns v24 special-transaction decoding and checks with the reference implementation. One edge case remains: a registration payload built in memory, not decoded from the wire, can pass validation with mismatched share signatures and then encode to bytes that do not decode back to the same value. It is low risk and can be fixed or accepted before merge.

Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2
Updated after discussion: 1 finding(s) of this review were settled in the inline threads; 2 blocking finding(s) still stand.
✅ Withdrawn: 🔴 Shared-registration mode is inferred from the share list
The v24 wire-format changes are broadly aligned with the pinned Dash Core layouts, and all supplied build, test, lint, and platform checks passed. However, the new shared-masternode validators still accept unsupported provider versions, malformed operator keys, and a malformed shared-registration shape that Core rejects; additional public in-memory states can also pass validation without round-tripping through the codec.
Triage: critical by gpt-6.1-sol (effort low) — This large, intricate diff changes consensus-critical transaction and block deserialization and validation, including signed output amounts, asset-lock/unlock hashing, CbTx merkle roots, provider transaction layouts, and signature-related payloads in files such as pkgs/primitives/src/transaction.rs, block.rs, and provider/*.rs.
These findings are from an automated code review. Verify each finding against the current code and only fix it if needed.
In `pkgs/primitives/src/provider/prodistx.rs`:
- [BLOCKING] pkgs/primitives/src/provider/prodistx.rs:61-65: New shared-masternode payloads accept versions that Core rejects
`ProDisTx`, `ProUpShareTx`, and `ProUpSharedRegTx` all decode their version as `ProTxVersion`, which admits versions 1, 2, and 3, but none of their `check()` methods enforces the payload-specific `CURRENT_VERSION = 1` rule. A structurally valid type 10, 11, or 12 payload with version 2 or 3 therefore passes `Transaction::check()` here while pinned Dash Core rejects it with `bad-prodis-version`, `bad-proupshare-version`, or `bad-proupsharedreg-version`. The shared enum also rejects versions 0 and 4 during decoding rather than preserving the raw version for the payload check. These three payloads need to decode the raw version and explicitly require version 1, or otherwise apply equivalent validation while preserving the reference rejection behavior.
In `pkgs/primitives/src/provider/proupsharedregtx.rs`:
- [BLOCKING] pkgs/primitives/src/provider/proupsharedregtx.rs:70-76: Shared registrar updates accept malformed operator keys
`BlsPkBytes` is an unvalidated, scheme-less 48-byte bag, but this check only rejects the all-zero value. Any nonzero byte sequence that is not a valid basic/IETF BLS public key therefore passes when the voting key and signature count are valid. Dash Core validates the operator key and rejects malformed or wrong-scheme encodings. Validate the non-null key with `BlsScIetf` before accepting the payload, returning the existing `OperatorKeyMismatch` error for a non-canonical key.
In `pkgs/primitives/src/provider/proregtx.rs`:
- [BLOCKING → WITHDRAWN in discussion; do not fix] pkgs/primitives/src/provider/proregtx.rs:292-315: Shared-registration mode is inferred from the share list
The reference uses a null `collateral_hash` as the shared-collateral marker, but this check sets `shared` only from `!self.shares.is_empty()`. A version-3 value with a null collateral hash, a non-null owner key, valid unshared payouts, and zero shares therefore enters the unshared path and can pass validation. The same malformed payload can be decoded from wire bytes because a zero share count is representable. Core treats the null collateral marker as shared and rejects the missing-share/owner-key shape. Derive shared mode from the collateral marker and enforce the shared share-count and field invariants consistently in `check()` and `check_owner_rewards()`.
- [SUGGESTION] pkgs/primitives/src/provider/proregtx.rs:292-315: ProRegTx validation does not enforce version-dependent field invariants
`check()` does not require `join_sigs.len() == shares.len()` and does not reject fields that are inactive for the selected version. A serde- or directly constructed value can therefore pass validation with mismatched share/signature counts, shares or early terms below version 3, payouts below version 3, or a non-empty `script_payout` at version 3. `encode()` branches only on `version`: it writes the share count followed by every join signature and silently drops inactive fields. Such values either fail to decode or decode to a different payload, so successful validation does not guarantee a stable wire representation. Add an explicit version/shape validation error before the owner-reward checks.
- [SUGGESTION] pkgs/primitives/src/provider/proregtx.rs:484-487: Provider validation tests discard structured error details
`check_matches_vectors` compares only the text before the first colon, so the counts, totals, amounts, and penalties carried by the new `ProTxInvalid` variants are not asserted. A regression could return the correct error category with an incorrect payload and still pass the corpus tests. Add direct constructed-value assertions for representative structured errors, or preserve and compare the complete expected error text in the corpus.
In `pkgs/primitives/src/provider/proupregtx.rs`:
- [SUGGESTION] pkgs/primitives/src/provider/proupregtx.rs:142-149: ProUpRegTx silently drops fields from the inactive version layout
For version 3 and later, validation checks only `payouts` while `encode()` ignores `script_payout`; for earlier versions, validation checks only `script_payout` while `encode()` ignores `payouts`. Both fields are publicly constructible and `payouts` is serde-defaulted, so a value can pass `check()` while its signed payload and wire encoding omit populated data. Reject fields that do not belong to the selected version, or enforce a single normalized representation before signing and encoding.

🔴 Blocking: New shared-masternode payloads accept versions that Core rejects
ProDisTx, ProUpShareTx, and ProUpSharedRegTx all decode their version as ProTxVersion, which admits versions 1, 2, and 3, but none of their check() methods enforces the payload-specific CURRENT_VERSION = 1 rule. A structurally valid type 10, 11, or 12 payload with version 2 or 3 therefore passes Transaction::check() here while pinned Dash Core rejects it with bad-prodis-version, bad-proupshare-version, or bad-proupsharedreg-version. The shared enum also rejects versions 0 and 4 during decoding rather than preserving the raw version for the payload check. These three payloads need to decode the raw version and explicitly require version 1, or otherwise apply equivalent validation while preserving the reference rejection behavior.

Agreed. The reference implementation reads the full layout of these three payloads whatever the version, then rejects any version other than 1 when it checks them. The fix decodes their version as a plain integer and makes check() require version 1, with tests for each payload at versions 0 and 2. It comes as a new commit on this PR; ETA about 16:00Z.

Agreed—using a raw u16 for these payloads preserves versions such as 0 and 4 so the full layout can be read before check() returns the payload-specific bad-version error. Requiring version 1 for all three types, with the proposed v0/v2 cases, resolves this finding; I’ll treat it as pending until that commit is on the reviewed head.
The finding stands on this commit until that change is pushed; the push gets a full review.

Resolved (re-reviewed at 550ba1b2): All three new payloads now decode their versions as raw u16 values and reject every version other than 1 before applying their remaining validation rules.

Any nonzero byte sequence that is not a valid basic/IETF BLS public key therefore passes when the voting key and signature count are valid. Out of scope for this PR. No provider payload in this crate validates its operator key today: ProRegTx and ProUpRegTx carry the same BlsPkBytes field and also reject only the null value, as this payload does. Checking BLS key validity at this layer is a separate change, and it should cover every provider payload at once rather than one of them.

I understand the consistency concern, but this does not predate the PR: ProUpSharedRegTx and its check() implementation are new here. A shared helper can be added to all provider payloads, but leaving this new type’s non-null operator key as an unchecked 48-byte bag still accepts arbitrary non-canonical keys that Core rejects. This remains outstanding for this PR.

Understood: the type is new in this PR. I'm still leaving the key-validity check out on purpose, because validating BLS keys at this layer should arrive as one change covering every provider payload, not one type at a time. This payload therefore stays consistent with the other provider payloads for now. I'll leave this thread open for the maintainer to decide.

The consistency argument does not make this new payload correct: ProUpSharedRegTx::check() is newly introduced here, and its own field documentation says the operator key uses the basic scheme. The existing BlsPkBytes::is_canonical::<BlsScIetf>() check can be applied to this payload without changing the older provider checks; those pre-existing omissions can still be addressed separately. Since this PR claims to check the new shared-provider transactions with Core's rules, accepting arbitrary nonzero 48-byte keys remains outstanding.

This matches the reference implementation, which treats a registration as shared exactly when its share list is non-empty (src/evo/providertx.h:230 at v24.0.0-rc.3). A null collateral hash with no shares is an ordinary registration whose collateral is an output of the same transaction. That path still requires a non-null owner key, rejects early terms, and checks the payouts, as here. So shared mode stays derived from the share list.

You’re right; I conflated the null collateral outpoint used for same-transaction collateral with the shared-mode marker. In Core, shared mode is determined by a non-empty share list, so the current shared = !self.shares.is_empty() behavior is correct and I withdraw this finding.

Withdrawn (re-reviewed at 550ba1b2): The current !self.shares.is_empty() rule matches pinned Core's IsShared() definition. A null collateral hash with no shares is the ordinary internal-collateral registration path, not a shared registration.

🟡 Suggestion: ProRegTx validation does not enforce version-dependent field invariants
check() does not require join_sigs.len() == shares.len() and does not reject fields that are inactive for the selected version. A serde- or directly constructed value can therefore pass validation with mismatched share/signature counts, shares or early terms below version 3, payouts below version 3, or a non-empty script_payout at version 3. encode() branches only on version: it writes the share count followed by every join signature and silently drops inactive fields. Such values either fail to decode or decode to a different payload, so successful validation does not guarantee a stable wire representation. Add an explicit version/shape validation error before the owner-reward checks.

Covered by two new commits, which will be pushed together with the fix for the version finding: 5e3f406 rejects mismatched share and signature counts and shares below version 3, and c29d9ed rejects a payout form that doesn't match the version. Early terms are already refused on the unshared path (UnsharedEarlyTerms).

The described checks cover the representation gaps I raised: signature/share cardinality, rejecting share data before version 3, and rejecting inactive payout forms on each side of the version boundary. That makes a value accepted by check() stable under the version-selected codec; I’ll treat this as pending until 5e3f406 and c29d9ed are on the reviewed head.
The finding stands on this commit until that change is pushed; the push gets a full review.

Resolved (re-reviewed at 550ba1b2): ProRegTx::check now enforces matching share and join-signature counts, rejects shares below version 3, and rejects payout fields that do not match the selected version; its existing unshared early-term check covers the remaining invariant.

🟡 Suggestion: ProUpRegTx silently drops fields from the inactive version layout
For version 3 and later, validation checks only payouts while encode() ignores script_payout; for earlier versions, validation checks only script_payout while encode() ignores payouts. Both fields are publicly constructible and payouts is serde-defaulted, so a value can pass check() while its signed payload and wire encoding omit populated data. Reject fields that do not belong to the selected version, or enforce a single normalized representation before signing and encoding.

Covered by c29d9ed, which will be pushed with the next round: ProUpRegTx::check now rejects a payout script from version 3 on, and payouts below version 3, so a value that passes check() encodes without dropping fields.

The stated c29d9ed checks cover both directions: payouts are rejected before version 3, and a payout script is rejected from version 3 onward. That prevents check() from accepting a value whose inactive field would be silently omitted by encoding; I’ll treat it as pending until the commit is on the reviewed head.

Resolved (re-reviewed at 550ba1b2): ProUpRegTx::check now rejects a payout script at version 3 or later and a payout list below version 3, preventing accepted values from silently losing fields during encoding.
check_matches_vectors compares only the text before the first colon, so the counts, totals, amounts, and penalties carried by the new ProTxInvalid variants are not asserted. A regression could return the correct error category with an incorrect payload and still pass the corpus tests. Add direct constructed-value assertions for representative structured errors, or preserve and compare the complete expected error text in the corpus.

Agreed. The next round adds direct assertions on constructed values for representative structured errors, so their counts, totals and amounts are checked, not only the error category.

Direct constructed-value assertions for representative structured ProTxInvalid variants address the specific gap I raised: the tests will verify counts, totals, and amounts rather than only the error category. I’ll treat this as pending until those assertions are present on the reviewed head.
The finding stands on this commit until that change is pushed; the push gets a full review.

Resolved (re-reviewed at 550ba1b2): The new constructed-value tests compare complete ProTxInvalid values, including counts, totals, amounts, and penalties, so the structured fields are now covered directly.
ProDisTx, ProUpShareTx and ProUpSharedRegTx read their version as
an integer, and their checks refuse any version but 1 with the
reference implementation's reasons.
The check vectors compare the reason only. Checks on constructed
payloads now pin the counts, totals, reward, amount, period and
penalty that the errors carry.

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2
The PR substantially improves v24 consensus-parity handling, and the previously reported version, layout, structured-error, and shared-mode issues are resolved or withdrawn. One blocking gap remains: the new type-12 shared registrar check accepts arbitrary nonzero malformed BLS operator-key bytes, while pinned Dash Core validates the key before accepting the payload. Several CI jobs, including lint and platform builds, were still pending at the captured head.
🔴 1 blocking
1 carried-forward finding(s) already raised on this PR; not re-posting as new inline comments.
Triage: critical by gpt-6.1-sol (effort low) — This is a large, intricate change to consensus-critical transaction and block deserialization and validation, including peer-facing parsing, asset-lock handling, provider signatures, and transaction checks in files such as transaction.rs, block.rs, and the provider payload modules.
These findings are from an automated code review. Verify each finding against the current code and only fix it if needed.
In `pkgs/primitives/src/provider/proupsharedregtx.rs`:
- [BLOCKING] pkgs/primitives/src/provider/proupsharedregtx.rs:77-78: Shared registrar updates accept malformed operator keys
(existing thread: https://github.com/dashpay/base-sdk/pull/88#discussion_r4370776063)
`BlsPkBytes` is an unvalidated 48-byte bag, but this check rejects only the all-zero value. Any nonzero malformed encoding therefore passes when the voting key and signature count are valid, and `Transaction::check()` accepts a type-12 payload that pinned Dash Core rejects. At the pinned Core implementation, `CProUpSharedRegTx::IsTriviallyValid` calls `pubKeyOperator.Get().IsValid()` before accepting the payload and returns `bad-protx-key-null` for an invalid key. The wire wrapper uses `legacy=false`, so the concrete local requirement is canonical validation under the IETF/basic scheme; existing null-only checks in older payloads do not justify introducing the same acceptance gap in this newly supported payload.
Out-of-scope follow-up suggestions (1)
These are valid observations, but they are outside this PR's scope and should be handled in separate issues or author/maintainer-requested PRs rather than blocking this review.
Validate operator keys consistently across existing provider payloads — The pre-existing ProRegTx and ProUpRegTx checks also reject only null operator keys rather than validating canonical BLS encodings. Applying the same validation to those payloads is a concrete security and consensus-parity follow-up, but it predates this PR and should be handled as one cross-payload change rather than expanding this fix selectively.
Follow-up: Create a separate primitives change that validates canonical basic/IETF operator keys across all provider payload checks.

Motivation
The reference implementation (
dashpay/dashv24.0.0-rc.3) reads several special transactions thatdash-primitivesrefuses or reads differently:dash-primitivesrefused to decode such a transaction, so it could not report the reason.dash-primitivesrefused all of them and hashed version 2 asset unlocks in full, so the merkle root of a block holding one did not match.dash-primitivesread version 3 payloads in a layout the reference implementation refuses, so it refused the reference implementation's version 3 payloads and accepted bytes the reference implementation does not read.
