Summary

Stacked on #1214. This PR gives a binding what ADR-0009 gives a Rust caller: a query named by operator, the term back with its query domain, and a probabilistic term's verify and target_limit, all through the engine. It is the binding half of ADR-0009 that the Go SDK (#1189) builds on.

  • A query names a field, an operator and its input (stack_encrypt::dynamic::query_term). The operator crosses as its name (eq, lt, lte, gt, gte, between, matches; dynamic::OpSpec), the input as one value or, for between, a list of two. The engine reads the input as the field's declared type (dynamic::read, which stack-encrypt: one chained plan builder as the single front door, so writes, queries and reads cannot drift #1057 asked to be wired into the query path), finds the index that answers by the typed path's DefaultIndex table written over a type (OpSpec::answered_by), and derives the same bytes the typed query chain derives for the same query. A field that names an EQL type answers through the type's query twin.
  • An operator the field does not answer is refused as a mistyped value is: dynamic::Error::Source naming the field, with the reason operator_not_answered (or unknown_operator, not_a_range). The typed path's own refusals before a term exists, a range the wrong way round and match text that cuts no token, are term errors. dynamic::check_query makes every refusal without a cipher.
  • verify and target_limit without a tokenizer in the host (dynamic::verify, dynamic::target_limit). Both run the code the typed MatchQuery runs, now taking the match options as a value (QueryTokens::verify, sem::match_limit), so a field's own options decide. verify takes the query as it was derived and cuts the input's tokens again, because the tokens are plaintext and no term carries them. target_limit reads the bits the query sets from the term's bytes. Neither uses a key. Stats::from_value reads statistics as data.
  • The catalog reports each EQL type's operators and their fidelity. TargetDescriptor::to_value gains operators: [{"operator", "fidelity", "arity", "index"}], computed from the type's row by the same table. TextEq answers eq, exactly. A type answers no probabilistic operator and no between yet: the catalog does not carry a type's match options, and a twin is one value (both wait for the EQL v4 types, EQL bindings: generate the v4 Rust types, and derive Stack Encrypt's traits on v4 only #1179).
  • Three guest exports: se_query_term(input, plan, field, operator, options), se_verify(input, values, plan, field, operator) and se_target_limit(term, stats, plan, field, operator, want). The first validates every input before the cipher is consulted; the other two need no cipher, like se_plan_check. Every plaintext buffer (the input, the page of values) is wiped in place.
  • Go: Cipher.QueryTerm, Cipher.Verify and Cipher.TargetLimit wrap the exports for generated code, with encrypt.QueryTerm, Stats, Bucket and Limit. record.Target gains Operators (record.TargetOperator, record.Fidelity), and the se_targets reader requires the key. Cipher.Derive and Cipher.QueryTerm share one rule for a plan that takes its context from a field.
  • ADR-0007 amended, marked proposed: ADR-0009 is still proposed, so the amendment says it takes effect when ADR-0009 is accepted and changes with it. It records the operator and its input in the data grammar, the term and its domain back, verify and target_limit as engine exports, and the catalog's operators and fidelity.

What waits

  • Generated code per operator is Go SDK: generate one query method per operator, with Verify and TargetLimit on probabilistic terms #1189. se_query (a target field's twin with no operator) and se_term (a term by index) stay until the generated code names operators, and go then.
  • A probabilistic operator or between through an EQL type. On top of next, TextMatch is produced and has a query twin, but answers no operator: the catalog does not carry its match options, which verify cuts tokens by, nor one query domain per operator (ADR-0009, decision 8). Tests pin that it answers nothing until then.
  • An expected_tokens prior for a match index declared as data. None has a data form yet, so target_limit on such a field is unbounded unless the statistics carry a measured histogram.
  • Block ORE is out of scope across the chain. Nothing here needs it: the orderings answer through CLLW ORE or OPE, as the typed path does.
  • ADR-0009's acceptance (Tracking: implement ADR-0009, operator-typed query terms for Stack Encrypt #1178's last item) flips the amendment from proposed.

Tests

  • dynamic::query unit tests: the operator names and the answering table; each operator's term equal to the typed chain's (Eq, Lt read from a float and an i64, Between over ORE and over OPE, Matches); every refusal, from query_term and check_query alike; verify equal to MatchQuery::verify value for value, under a case-folding and a case-keeping index; target_limit equal to MatchQuery::target_limit under measured, lower-confidence and declared statistics; bad term bytes and bad statistics; the wire forms of a term, a limit and the catalog's operators; a target field answering through a resolver.
  • tests/query_operators.rs writes tests/fixtures/query_operators.json: every term, a verified page and six limits, each checked against the typed chain. The Go tests read the same file.
  • Guest native tests: each query term equal to se_term's bytes for the answering index; validation refusing what the operation refuses, with the same status; verify and target_limit over the wire; the eql build's catalog. Seven new leak scenarios put a marker plaintext in each new error path.
  • Go: the fixture's terms, verified page and limits through the deterministic guest; the refusals with their Diagnostic field and reason; Verify and TargetLimit on a guest with no cipher; the catalog's operators; the strict se_targets reader.
  • The five op_* trybuild snapshots are re-recorded: OpSpec's variants share names with the operator types, so rustc now prints stack_encrypt::op::Lt where it printed Lt. Nothing else in them changed.

Test plan

  • cargo fmt --all --check, cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets --all-features -D warnings (Rust 1.94.1).
  • cargo nextest run --workspace --all-features: 1154 passed.
  • mise run test:doc, mise run doc.
  • mise run wasm:guest:test (fmt, clippy on host and wasm32-wasip1 for all four feature sets, rustdoc, nextest with and without eql).
  • mise run wasm:guest:build, :deterministic, :eql, :eql:deterministic, then mise run go:test and mise run go:lint.
  • cargo check -p eql-bindings --features stack-encrypt (a doc comment changed there).
  • cargo-mutants --in-diff over stack-auth and stack-encrypt: 102 mutants, every viable one caught once the tests for the integer kinds and the Float32 confidence were in, and one equivalent guard removed.
  • CI.

Closes #1188. The ADR-0007 amendment is written and marked proposed until ADR-0009 is accepted, as the issue's first item asks it to follow ADR-0009.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added operator-based encrypted queries, including query-term generation, verification of probabilistic match results, and fetch-limit estimates based on query statistics.
    • Query targets now report supported operators, their fidelity and value arity, and the index used to answer them.
    • Added equality and range query support, alongside probabilistic matching where supported.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved handling of unsupported operators, invalid query inputs, malformed query terms, and invalid query statistics.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 3a8b7

The operator-based query APIs look ready to merge with one minor follow-up. For an unbounded match query, the Go fetch helper can ask for more rows than the Rust engine would. Aligning that cap is a small change.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 3a8b7

The new query operations preserve field, type, context, and keyset controls in the inspected paths. No concrete security bypass was established. The main design sensitivity is keeping the Go API and guest contracts aligned; incomplete coverage prevents a minimal-risk assessment.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — QueryTerm uses the calling cipher’s selected keyset through the existing guest instance. Verify and TargetLimit use no key and process supplied values or statistics; they do not fetch or decrypt stored records themselves.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Caller-supplied names and values cross the Go-to-guest boundary, but Rust rechecks field existence, operator support, type, and derivation context against the supplied plan. These are semantic and context-binding controls, not an authorization policy for arbitrary untrusted plans.
  • observed — TargetLimit checks that supplied match-term positions are nonempty, correctly encoded, in range, and strictly increasing. This is structural validation under the field’s options, not cryptographic authentication of the term’s originating field or keyset.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The new calls reuse mutex-serialized instance access and staged-buffer cleanup. Cancellation or a guest trap makes the instance unavailable for subsequent calls. QueryTerm and Verify defer wiping their encoded plaintext copies; Verify takes both guest plaintext buffers before acting on either validation result.

Explanation

Issue #1188 coding requirements are met. The PR adds the proposed ADR-0007 amendment with the required operator grammar, returned query terms and domains, verify, and target_limit. It adds the three guest exports, EQL operator and fidelity catalog metadata, Go wrappers and types, and Rust and Go-through-guest tests. The amendment correctly remains proposed because ADR-0009 is not accepted.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within issue #1188. ABI wiring, validation, parsing, context handling, shared query helpers, fixtures, leak tests, documentation, and diagnostic updates support the requested exports, catalog data, or cross-language tests. No unrelated product change is demonstrated. The PR keeps generated per-operator code, probabilistic EQL operators, EQL between, and Block ORE out of scope.

Review attestation: automated code review (/code-review medium, then a cross-check of the findings) of head 399a5ec.

Result: no critical or blocking issues found. No inline comments.

Read in full:

  • packages/stack-encrypt/src/dynamic/query.rs (non-test code)
  • dynamic/target.rs
  • sem/mod.rs
  • Guest abi.rs and ops.rs (new exports, validation order, wipe documentation)
  • Go checker.go (targetOperators)

Checked and found sound:

  • verify and target_limit call the same code as the typed MatchQuery (QueryTokens::verify, match_limit). The refactor of sem/mod.rs keeps the typed path's behaviour.
  • se_query_term validates every input via validate::query_term before the keyset is resolved.
  • se_verify and se_query_term take their plaintext through take_plaintext, so the buffers are wiped in place as documented.
  • The query_bits term check rejects empty, odd-length, out-of-filter and non-ascending terms.
  • Stats::from_value rejects duplicate keys, negative integers and unknown keys.

Not reviewed:

  • The Go query.go wrappers and the Go and Rust test bodies. I did not run the suite either.
  • The fixture JSON and the re-recorded tests/ui snapshots.
  • CI status, which the PR body lists as unchecked.

Non-blocking observations:

  • Stats::from_value accepts a NaN or out-of-range confidence and passes it on to with_confidence. I did not confirm whether that method clamps it. If it doesn't, a host-supplied value could skew the limit.
  • ADR-0007 is amended but marked proposed. It should be re-checked when ADR-0009 is accepted.

An independent review of this PR found no blocking issues; fixed in 51dc986:

  • ADR-0007 amendment: it said no type but TextEq is produced. On next, TextMatch is produced and has a twin but answers no operator; the amendment and the module docs now say that.
  • Missing test: nothing pinned it. The guest and Go catalog tests now require every type but TextEq to answer nothing, and a guest test refuses matches and eq on a TextMatch field.

Copilot's three findings are fixed in 02746cf.

Rebased onto #1213's CI fix, so the commits cited above have new IDs: the TextMatch docs and tests are c0f3e3a (was 51dc986), and Copilot's three fixes are 93eec11 (was 02746cf). Also, 744d5ff excludes the generated query_operators.json from Biome, as record_lowering.json is: the fixture is written by serde_json's pretty printer and compared byte for byte, so Biome's JSON formatting failed Lint (Biome).

  • languages/golang/encrypt/checker.go:214: targetOperators accepts any non-empty operator name, but its fidelity, arity and index fields only take the values the engine writes. That makes the doc's claim "every value one the engine writes" false. A guest or catalog that writes "like" or "Eq" parses cleanly, and the error only shows up later, as unknown_operator from Cipher.QueryTerm. Limit names to eq/lt/lte/gt/gte/between/matches, the same set OpSpec::parse accepts.
  • languages/golang/encrypt/query.go:165,174: parseQueryTerm stores any operator and index string from se_query_term. The catalog reader rejects an index outside eq/match/ore/ope with ErrInternal, so the same bad value is accepted here and refused there. The fidelity check is also copied from checker.go. One shared parser for operator, fidelity and index would close this.
  • languages/golang/encrypt/query_test.go:76: queryPlan is hard-coded, and the test ignores the "plan" that query_operators.json records. If the Rust test changes its plan and the fixture is regenerated, this Go test fails with byte-mismatched terms and no clear reason. Decode the fixture's plan, or at least assert that it equals queryPlan.

Second review round, fixed in 6701652:

  • checker.go:214, operator names (tobyhede): fixed. targetOperators now reads a name through parseOperatorName, which accepts only eq, lt, lte, gt, gte, between and matches, the set OpSpec::parse accepts. A catalog that writes "like" or "Eq" is refused when it is read, as ErrInternal, instead of failing later as unknown_operator from Cipher.QueryTerm. targets_test.go adds both cases to the refusal table.
  • query.go:165,174, parseQueryTerm (tobyhede): fixed. The catalog reader and parseQueryTerm now share parseOperatorName, parseFidelity and parseOperatorIndex, so the duplicated fidelity check is gone and an operator or index the catalog refuses is refused from se_query_term too. TestParseQueryTermTakesOnlyWhatTheEngineWrites feeds every name the engine writes through both readers and checks each refusal.
  • query_test.go:76, the hard-coded queryPlan (tobyhede): fixed. readQueryFixture now decodes the fixture's "plan" and checks that it equals queryPlan.Wire(). If the Rust test's plan changes and the fixture is regenerated, every fixture test fails with "the fixture's plan is not queryPlan" and both plans printed, not with mismatched term bytes. I checked that it fires by changing queryPlan locally.
  • Stats::from_value and a NaN or out-of-range confidence (attestation note): no change needed. with_confidence stores the value as given, and target_limit promises a finite limit only when 0 < confidence < 1. NaN fails both comparisons, so anything outside the open interval, NaN included, answers Limit::Unbounded, which is a full scan and not a skewed limit. op/stats.rs's a_confidence_outside_the_open_interval_is_unbounded pins 0, 1, −0.5, 1.5 and NaN.
  • ADR-0007 marked proposed (attestation note): as intended. It stays proposed until ADR-0009 is accepted and gets re-checked then.

Checked locally with all five guests built: mise run go:test (gofmt, vet, every Go package, the fixture tests included).

Cap FetchOr's fallback page at the engine's MAX_ROWS, as the Rust Limit::fetch_or does.

The Rust Limit::fetch_or (packages/stack-encrypt/src/op/stats.rs:219-221) returns page.min(MAX_ROWS) for Limit::Unbounded. The documentation says it is "Never more than MAX_ROWS." The Go FetchOr returns page unchanged. A Go caller that passes a large page therefore issues a larger LIMIT than a Rust caller does for the same unbounded query. ADR-0007 asks bindings to match the engine. Expose the cap as a constant and apply it here, or document that the Go method does not cap.

…d verify and size a probabilistic query with no key

A binding names a query by field, operator and input, as ADR-0009 has a
Rust caller name it by operator type: dynamic::query_term reads the input
as the field's declared type, finds the index that answers by the typed
path's default table (OpSpec::answered_by), and derives the bytes the typed
query chain derives. An operator the field does not answer is refused as a
mistyped value is, naming the field. dynamic::verify and
dynamic::target_limit run the typed MatchQuery's code under the field's own
match options, and the catalog entry of each EQL type lists the operators
the engine answers for it with their fidelity.

tests/fixtures/query_operators.json records each term, a verified page and
fetch limits, checked against the typed chain, for the Go SDK's tests.

Part of #1188
…the Go SDK can query by operator without a tokenizer of its own

The encrypt guest derives a query term from a plan, a field, an operator
name and its input, verifies a page of decrypted values in one call, and
sizes a probabilistic query's fetch from its term and the table's
statistics; the last two use no key and run with no cipher. se_targets
entries carry the operators each EQL type answers, and the Go reader
requires them. Cipher.QueryTerm, Cipher.Verify and Cipher.TargetLimit wrap
the exports for generated code, and the Go tests hold them to the Rust
query fixture through the deterministic guest.

Part of #1188
…oposed until ADR-0009 is accepted

The data grammar gains the operator and its input, the term comes back with
its query domain, verify and target_limit become engine exports, and the
catalog reports each EQL type's operators and their fidelity. The amendment
rests on ADR-0009, which is proposed, and takes effect when it is accepted.

Part of #1188
…r yet, and pin it

Review follow-ups. On top of next the EQL v4 catalog produces Integer,
Bigint, Text, TextEq, TextMatch, Boolean, Real and Double, so the
ADR-0007 amendment's "today TextEq answers eq and no other type is
produced", and its "both wait for the EQL v4 types", were wrong. TextMatch
is produced and has a query twin but answers no operator, because the
catalog does not carry the match options `verify` cuts tokens by; the
amendment and the `dynamic::query` module docs now say so, and say the
gate is that catalog work.

Nothing held that in place: the catalog tests checked TextEq and the types
not produced, so a produced type starting to answer `matches` would have
passed. The guest and Go tests now require every type but TextEq to answer
nothing, and a guest test refuses `matches` and `eq` on a TextMatch field
as not answered.

The module docs no longer call the dynamic ordering rule the typed path's
default: the typed default is ORE, and a field declaring only OPE is
answered through it here, which the typed path spells `.via(Ope)`. The
`Reason` docs count five inputs, not four.
… a cipher, wipe both verify buffers, and name the field on bad stats

Copilot review.

An `eq` query on text with a code point unassigned in Unicode 16 passed
`check_query`, which validated ranges and match text but not equality
normalization, so `se_query_term` consulted the cipher (and could load a
keyset) before derivation refused it; a guest with no cipher reported
STATUS_STATE where the refusal is a term failure. `check_input` now runs
the equality normalization the derivation runs, keylessly; a test in the
engine and one at the guest boundary pin both the check and the op.

`se_verify` took the query and the values buffers one after the other
with `?`, so a bad query pointer returned before the page of decrypted
values was taken and wiped. Both are taken before either result is used.
(The Go host wipes every staged buffer after the call regardless.)

Statistics are parsed with no field to hand, so a malformed `stats` in
`se_target_limit` was refused naming no field; it now names the query's,
as every other query refusal does.
The fixture is written by serde_json's pretty printer when
STACK_ENCRYPT_UPDATE_FIXTURES is set, and the test compares the file with
what the engine derives, so Biome's JSON formatting would make every
regeneration a diff. It joins record_lowering.json and the other
generated fixtures in biome.json's excludes.
…tokens

FieldPlan::new is public and does not check the MatchOptions of a match
output, so a plan built by hand can carry an n-gram length of zero. The
term derivation validates them, but check_query and query_term reach the
tokenizer first through check_input, and verify calls it directly, so
such a plan panicked in the tokenizer rather than returning
InvalidOptions. query_tokens now validates the options first.
- The catalog reader and se_query_term's reader share one parser each for
an operator's name, fidelity and index. A name is one of eq, lt, lte,
gt, gte, between and matches, the set the engine's OpSpec::parse
accepts. The catalog took any non-empty name, so "like" or "Eq" parsed
and failed later as unknown_operator from Cipher.QueryTerm, and
se_query_term took any operator and any index, which the catalog
refused. Both now refuse the same values, and a test feeds every name
  the engine writes through both.
- The query fixture test checks that query_operators.json was recorded
under queryPlan, so a fixture regenerated under another plan fails by
name rather than as mismatched term bytes.
