Summary

Stacked on #1191. This PR implements ADR-0009 decision 5: a probabilistic query says how many rows to fetch to expect want real matches.

use stack_encrypt::op::{self, Limit, Probabilistic, Stats};

let stats = Stats::measured(reltuples, histogram);        // or Stats::declared(reltuples)
let query = cipher.query(op::Matches, "ali").on(&name_plan).await?;
let fetch = query.target_limit(10, &stats).fetch_or(50); // LIMIT for the SQL
  • The method. Probabilistic::target_limit(&self, want, &Stats) -> Limit returns want + Poisson_quantile(λ = p·N, confidence). Here p is the mean over stored filters of f^b, and b is the number of bits the query sets.
  • Two sources for the fill.
    • Stats::declared(rows) uses a new MatchConfig::expected_tokens() prior. It is a default method returning None, so existing configurations compile unchanged. It is not part of the index's identity and changes no term.
    • Stats::measured(rows, histogram) takes (set bits, rows) buckets, which one sampled aggregate over the column gives. It takes the mean of the power, never the power of the mean fill. That was the review finding on docs(adr): ADR-0009, operators select the index and a query term is not the stored term #1177, and a test pins it. An empty histogram falls back to the prior.
  • Limit. It is Rows(n), or Unbounded when nothing is known of the stored filters or the confidence is not in (0, 1). fetch_or(page) reads either as a fetch size.
  • The Poisson quantile. It is a bounded, normalised sum over [λ − 10√λ, λ + 12√λ + 50], which holds all but about 1e-23 of the mass. Each term is kept as a log relative to the first, and the sums run from the top, so it matches an exact reference to within one up to a confidence of 1 − 1e-12. That costs about 22√λ terms. Past λ = 1e7 it returns the conservative λ + 8√λ.
  • Limits fit SQL. A Limit never exceeds op::MAX_ROWS (i64::MAX).
  • The independence assumption is stated. A row sharing tokens with the query passes more often, so the confidence is nominal on natural text.

Tests

  • Unit tests in op::stats:
    • The quantile matches reference values computed with math.lgamma, from λ = 0.034 to 1e6.
    • ADR-0009's worked table reproduces: want + 1, want + 7805 and want + 3.
    • The mixed-length column gives λ ≈ 3,800, where the mean fill would give under 300.
    • The edge cases are covered: no prior, an empty histogram, out-of-range confidence, a count above m, and overflow of want.
  • Integration tests in tests/op.rs:
    • A three-letter query against a 200-token prior asks for thousands of rows, while a long one asks for under 20.
    • A stricter confidence asks for more rows.
    • With no prior, target_limit is Unbounded until the column is measured from real stored filters.

Test plan

  • cargo nextest run -p stack-encrypt --all-features: 575 passed. The review fixes are in a second commit; see the review comment.
  • Doctests, clippy with -D warnings with and without --all-features, and rustdoc with warnings as errors.
  • CI, including wasm32 clippy and mutants.

The ADR examples now use fetch_or(page). ADR-0009 stays proposed. #1178 says to mark it accepted once this pins Stats and Limit, and that call is a human's.

Closes #1184

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added confidence-based estimates for how many candidate rows to fetch, using declared or measured filter statistics when available.
    • Added a page-size fallback when estimates are unavailable, plus safeguards for zero-row requests and maximum row limits.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified that estimates are probabilistic: candidate rows are verified individually, and reaching the limit may mean results are incomplete.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 2ec53

The documented example needs a fallback for unavailable statistics before readers can use it as shown. This is a bounded documentation issue, not a blocker to the library’s runtime behavior.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 2ec53

The new API supplies fetch-size estimates without changing query identity or per-row verification. Its confidence is nominal, and applications remain responsible for verification, pagination, and practical resource limits. No introduced security vulnerability was established in the reviewed implementation.

No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated exposure is application-side candidate sizing and its potential effect on database fetch volume. The reviewed path returns a number or Unbounded; it does not itself grant access to additional tenants, stores, credentials, or services. Effective exposure through external application consumers remains unverified.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Candidate results remain probabilistic. The public contract assigns decrypted-row verification to the caller and states that the library does not execute queries. Statistics affect sizing rather than replacing that existing verification boundary.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The statistical estimate is not a resource-enforcement boundary. MAX_ROWS represents PostgreSQL's integer range, while histogram allocation follows the caller's iterator. Practical memory, fetch, and pagination budgets therefore remain application responsibilities; no newly reachable attacker-controlled production consumer was established.

Review (high effort): findings and how each was addressed

An independent review checked 5,220 (λ, confidence) pairs against an exact mpmath reference, plus a port of the mutants. The fixes are in b3dd1f78f, rebased onto #1191's review fix.

  1. Some mutants would hang poisson_quantile, and CI counts a hang as a survivor. This was confirmed locally: || → && timed out, and the λ = 1e7 threshold's > → >= survived. Fixed:
    • The quantile is now a bounded sum over [λ − 10√λ, λ + 12√λ + 50], so no mutation can loop.
    • A test at exactly λ = 1e7 kills the threshold mutant.
  2. "Exact" was false at high confidence for large λ. Cancellation in −λ + s·ln λ − ln s! cost about 1e-8 in the log. At λ = 4.75e6 and 1 − 1e-12 the answer was low by about 3,000. Fixed:
    • Each term is kept relative to the window's first term, and the sums are normalised.
    • Sums run from the top, where terms are smallest, so the tail a high confidence compares against is not lost to rounding.
    • It now matches the exact reference to within one at 1 − 1e-12, at 0.9999 for λ = 3.4e6, and at λ = 1e7.
    • ln_factorial is gone.
  3. A Limit could exceed any SQL LIMIT. reltuples is −1 for a table never analysed, which reads as u64::MAX. Fixed:
    • Limit is capped at op::MAX_ROWS (i64::MAX).
    • The ADR's statements use greatest(reltuples, 0).
  4. The model assumes a non-matching row shares no token with the needle. "police" holds two of "alice"'s 3-grams, so it passes at f^6 rather than f^18. Documented in decision 5 and on target_limit: the confidence is nominal on natural text, and verify and the candidate count still decide correctness.
  5. Doc fixes.
    • The stats SQL now filters NULL values.
    • target_limit says a fetch that returned the limit is a page only when fewer than want rows verified.
    • expected_tokens counts distinct tokens.
  6. API.
    • Histogram counts are summed as floats, so huge counts cannot overflow.
    • The measured-column test now bounds the fetch against the λ computed from its own histogram. The old 1..=4 bound was weak.
    • 15 runs with random keys did not flake.

The reviewer also confirmed these were fine:

  • The skipped mass below λ − 10√λ is under 1e-23.
  • The conservative branch past 1e7 holds.
  • The worked table reproduces, and the mixed-length column gives 3,800 where the mean fill gives 245.
  • Edge cases (rows = 0, expected_tokens = 0, a count above m) behave.
  • The integration thresholds cannot flake whatever the keys.

575 tests pass locally, with doctests, clippy and rustdoc clean. cargo mutants --in-diff is running over the whole stack.

Follow-up: the CI mutants gate on b3dd1f78f found one survivor and three timeouts in poisson_quantile. They are fixed in 850e345c8.

  • The survivor. Shifting each log term by the window's peak was never needed: relative to the window's first term no term exceeds about e^100. That made - → + there equivalent, so the shift is gone.
  • The timeouts. A mutated threshold or window bound sent the MAX_ROWS test's λ of about 9e18 into a window of billions of terms. The window is now 22√λ + 50 wide, capped at 2^20 terms whatever the input.
  • A new test pins the window's end as the answer when the confidence allows no mass.

A focused cargo mutants run over op/stats.rs caught everything else. That run left one survivor, the initial answer, and the new test is aimed at it; it was written after the run, so that run has not checked it.

Another survivor came up from the CI mutants gate on 850e345c8: start..=start + width → start * width. The loop's range bypassed the width cap, so that mutation ran for billions of terms instead of failing.

Fixed in 026759a57: the loop now runs over the capped width and works out each k from its offset.

A focused cargo mutants run over op/stats.rs tested 91 mutants: 87 caught, 4 unviable, none missed, no timeouts.

Rebased onto #1190's chain rework (operator first, .via(..).on(&plan), op::Matches as a value, CaseSensitive/CaseInsensitive, Match as a value). On this PR that also renames sem::Needle to sem::QueryTokens and takes "needle" out of the prose: a match query is a filter over the query's value.

Attestation of review — automated /code-review medium + cross-check of findings, head 8aed9a6.

Critical / blocking: none.

Checked:

  • poisson_quantile: window bounds, log-relative terms, top-down tail sum, and the edge cases (λ ≤ 0, NaN, confidence ≥ 1, λ > 1e7) all behave as the tests state. No overflow or underflow of the weights.
  • pass_rate / limit: it uses the mean of f^b, not the power of the mean, and an empty histogram falls back to the prior. Limit is clamped to MAX_ROWS and want saturates.
  • MatchQuery::target_limit: positions() is deduplicated, so b is the bit count the model needs. The test's hardcoded 256 matches MatchOptions::default().m.
  • ADR SQL (WHERE after TABLESAMPLE, greatest(reltuples, 0), i32 for cardinality) is valid, and the op.rs → op/mod.rs rename is reflected in the trybuild snapshots.

Non-blocking notes (inline):

  1. fetch_or(page) doesn't clamp page to MAX_ROWS.
  2. Probabilistic::target_limit is a new required method on an unsealed public trait.

Minor, no action needed: bits as i32 in pass_rate and mean_power would wrap for a count above i32::MAX. That is unreachable, since m is a u16 range.

Not run here: CI, including wasm32 clippy and mutants, is still pending per the PR checklist.

  • packages/stack-encrypt/src/op/stats.rs:57: the documented greatest(reltuples, 0) recipe turns an unknown row count into rows = 0. For a populated table that has never been analysed (for example, straight after a bulk load), λ = 0, so target_limit(want, ..) returns a confident Limit::Rows(want) when the count is actually unknown and the answer should be Unbounded. The same recipe is in ADR-0009 at lines 384, 744 and 1077. Stats has no way to say "row count unknown". The test comment at line 421 shows the other extreme: −1 read as u64 becomes MAX_ROWS, a full scan.
  • packages/stack-encrypt/src/op/stats.rs:82 and :138: the histogram SQL filters WHERE name IS NOT NULL, so p is the pass rate over non-NULL rows only. rows comes from reltuples, which counts every row. λ = p·rows therefore charges NULL rows, which can never match, at the non-NULL pass rate. On a column that is 90% NULL the false-positive budget is 10× too large and every fetch over-fetches. Either scale rows by the non-NULL fraction (the histogram's count(*) total gives it), or say in the docs that rows must count only non-NULL rows.

Generated by Claude Code

ADR-0009 decision 5: a caller who wants `want` real matches from a
probabilistic query fetches `want + Poisson_quantile(λ = p·N, confidence)`
rows, where `p` is the mean over stored filters of `f^b`, `f` a filter's
fill and `b` the bits the query sets.

- `Probabilistic::target_limit(&self, want, &Stats) -> Limit`.
- `op::Stats::declared(rows)` uses a new `MatchConfig::expected_tokens()`
  prior, a default method returning `None`, so existing configurations
  compile unchanged; it is not part of the index's identity.
- `op::Stats::measured(rows, histogram)` takes `(set bits, rows)` buckets
  from one sampled aggregate over the column, and takes the mean of the
  power, never the power of the mean fill. An empty histogram falls back
  to the prior.
- `op::Limit` is `Rows(n)` or `Unbounded`, the latter when nothing is known
  of the stored filters or the confidence is not in (0, 1). `fetch_or(page)`
  reads either as a fetch size.
- The quantile sums the Poisson mass exactly in log space from
  `λ − 10√λ`, so it costs about `12√λ` terms; past `λ = 1e7` it is the
  conservative `λ + 8√λ`.

Unit tests reproduce the ADR's worked table and its mixed-length column,
and pin the quantile to reference values computed with `lgamma`.

Closes #1184

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01VYKAWbd361xDLmqBdLoUcB
- The Poisson quantile is a bounded, normalised sum over
  `[λ − 10√λ, λ + 12√λ + 50]`. Each term is a log relative to the
  window's first, so a large `λ` no longer loses the starting term to
  cancellation, and the sums run from the top, where the terms are
  smallest, so a confidence near 1 is compared against a tail rounding did
  not swallow. It matches an exact reference to within one up to
  1 − 1e-12 (was off by thousands at λ ≈ 4.75e6), and no mutation of it
  can loop forever. `ln_factorial` is gone.
- A `Limit` never exceeds `op::MAX_ROWS` (`i64::MAX`), the largest SQL
  `LIMIT`; `reltuples` of −1 read as a `u64` no longer overflows a bind.
  The ADR's statements use `greatest(reltuples, 0)`.
- Histogram counts are summed as floats, so huge counts cannot overflow.
- The independence assumption is stated in ADR-0009 decision 5 and on
  `target_limit`: a row sharing tokens with the needle passes more often,
  so the confidence is nominal on natural text; `verify` still decides.
- Docs: the stats SQL filters NULL values; `target_limit` says a fetch
  that returned the limit is a page only when fewer than `want` verified;
  `expected_tokens` counts distinct tokens; decision 4's code shows
  `target_limit` on `Probabilistic`.
- Tests: exact references at high confidence and at λ = 1e7 (which kills
  the threshold mutant), the `MAX_ROWS` cap, float-summed counts, and the
  measured-column test bounds the fetch against the histogram's own λ.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01VYKAWbd361xDLmqBdLoUcB
CI's mutants gate found one survivor and three timeouts in
`poisson_quantile`:

- Shifting each log term by the window's peak never mattered: relative to
  the window's first term no term exceeds about e^100, so `-` → `+` there
  was equivalent. The shift is gone.
- A mutated threshold or window bound sent the `MAX_ROWS` test's λ of
  about 9e18 into a window of billions of terms. The window is now
  `22√λ + 50` wide from its start, capped at 2^20 terms whatever the
  input, so no mutation can hang a test.
- The window's end is the answer when the confidence allows no mass
  (above 1), now pinned by a test.

A focused `cargo mutants` run over `op/stats.rs` leaves no survivor and no
timeout.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01VYKAWbd361xDLmqBdLoUcB
CI's mutants gate found `start..=start + width` → `start * width`
surviving: the loop's range sat outside the cap on the window's width,
so the mutation ran for billions of terms instead of failing. The loop
now runs over `0..=width`, the capped width itself, and derives each
`k` from it.

A focused `cargo mutants` run over `op/stats.rs`: 91 mutants, 87
caught, 4 unviable, none missed, no timeouts.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01VYKAWbd361xDLmqBdLoUcB
- A `want` of 0 is `Limit::Rows(0)`. The quantile was added anyway, so a
  dense column turned a zero-row request into a large fetch.
- `Limit::fetch_or(page)` cuts `page` to `MAX_ROWS`, as the type
  promises, so `Unbounded.fetch_or(u64::MAX)` cannot wrap an `i64` bind.
- Past ten million expected false positives the `λ + 8√λ` bound covers a
  confidence up to `1 − 1e-15` and no more. A higher one is now
  `Limit::Unbounded`; `poisson_quantile` returns `None` for it.
- The row-count recipe no longer clamps `reltuples` to 0. A table never
  analysed has an unknown count, not an empty one, and 0 gave a confident
  fetch of exactly `want`. The catalog read now returns no row then, and
  the docs say to build no `Stats` and page, or run `ANALYZE`.
- `rows` counts the non-NULL rows, since the histogram's pass rate is
  over those: the recipe scales `reltuples` by `pg_stats.null_frac`.
  Charging NULL rows at the non-NULL pass rate over-fetched in proportion
  to the column's NULLs.

The rustdoc, ADR-0009 decision 5 and its examples, and the CHANGELOG say
all of this.

@tobyhede thanks, both fixed in 2ec5306. Both are fixed in the documented recipe; the API has not changed.

  • An unknown row count. You're right that greatest(reltuples, 0) turns "never analysed" into "empty", which gives λ = 0 and a confident Rows(want). The recipe in Stats::declared's rustdoc, and ADR-0009 decision 5 with its sqlx and TypeScript examples, now filters WHERE c.reltuples >= 0, so it returns no row while the count is unknown. The docs say that with no row the application builds no Stats and pages with a cursor, as for Unbounded, or runs ANALYZE first. The sqlx example reads the count with fetch_optional and builds Option<Stats>. I left Stats without an "unknown" state. A Stats that can only ever answer Unbounded adds nothing over not calling target_limit, and adding the state would change Stats::from_value in the guest ABI (feat(stack-encrypt): query a plan field by operator through the guest, with verify and target_limit as exports #1215). The test comment at the old line 421 now says that u64::MAX is what a caller who casts −1 gets, not a reading the docs recommend.
  • NULL rows in rows. Also right: the histogram's pass rate is over non-NULL rows, and rows counted every row. The recipe now gives the non-NULL count, reltuples * (1 - coalesce(pg_stats.null_frac, 0)). The docs say rows must count the rows the predicate can match, and explain why. When pg_stats has no row for the column yet, the coalesce falls back to every row. That over-fetches, which is the safe direction. The CHANGELOG entry says both.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Handle the None row count in the example.

stats is now Option<Stats>. The later examples call term.target_limit(10, &stats), and that call does not compile with an Option. Show the fallback explicitly. For example, use stats.as_ref().map_or(Limit::Unbounded, |s| term.target_limit(10, s)).fetch_or(50), or use the declared prior.
