feat(workflows): ship the script API reference with the workflows skill - #440
The workflows skill only taught a harness how to run workflows. When ChatGPT or Claude Code was asked to write one, nothing it could see described the script API: the primitives, the meta rules, and the sandbox limits lived only on the website, which isn't in the package. So it guessed.
This adds skills/workflows/reference.md beside SKILL.md: the sandbox (QuickJS, only the listed globals), the script shape (top-level await and return, literal-only meta with its exact fields and limits), every primitive's behavior including per-item outcomes from parallel and pipeline, the full set of agent options with the ones the runtime rejects, structured-output schema rules, how write mode and worktree isolation work, what --resume reuses, and the run limits. Each claim was checked against the runtime rather than copied from the docs, which caught that args defaults to {} and that --resume rejects --args (the old SKILL.md example passed it, so that's fixed too). SKILL.md now tells the harness to read the reference before writing a script, and stays short for harnesses that only run workflows.
It also adds skills/workflows/patterns.md: complete scripts for the engineering loops a harness is most likely to need, namely plan with a critic, implement-review-fix until approved, a QA gate that loops until tests pass, explore-then-synthesize, multi-lens review with verified findings, bake-offs between agents, mapping one change over many units, debugging with competing hypotheses, and composing named workflows. A short design section covers the rules that keep these safe: schemas for every decision, bounded loops, explicit writeMode: "read_only" for readers inside writing runs (they otherwise inherit write access), and which workspace each step should use. The reference now also spells out that a named workspace is created by its first call with isolation: "worktree" and reused after that, which the sequential loops depend on.
For ChatGPT, managed skills are copied from the package into ~/.devspace/skills, but the sync only copied SKILL.md, so the reference would never have arrived. It now copies every file in the bundled skill folder, and the skills test checks the reference is synced and isn't loaded as a separate skill. Coding agents that add the skill with npx skills add get the whole folder already.
Every complete script in both files runs unmodified through the real QuickJS runner with stubbed agents. That check also compiles each schema with the runtime's schema compiler, checks every agent() call's options against the runtime's allowed set and the create-before-reuse rule for workspaces, and alternates stub verdicts so the fix and retry loops actually iterate. The docs page still carries its own copy of the primitives table; making it render from reference.md is a separate change.
The workflows skill only taught harnesses how to run workflows, so a
model asked to write one had to guess the API. Add reference.md beside
SKILL.md covering the sandbox, meta rules, primitives (agent, phase,
parallel, pipeline, workflow, log, args), agent options, schemas,
edits, resume, and limits, all checked against the runtime. SKILL.md
points to it before authoring, and the resume example no longer passes
--args, which resume rejects.
Managed skill sync copied only SKILL.md into ~/.devspace/skills, so it
now copies every file in the bundled skill folder.

Walkthrough
The workflow skill now covers authoring, running, and inspecting workflows. New reference and patterns guides describe workflow syntax, behavior, limits, and examples. Managed skill synchronization now processes every top-level bundled file, and a test checks for the workflow reference.
Changes: Workflow Authoring

Summary
Authoring and execution reference skills/workflows/SKILL.md, skills/workflows/reference.md
The skill guide separates writing from running workflows and directs authors to the reference and patterns guides. The reference documents workflow structure, primitives, agent options, response validation, write and worktree behavior, resume rules, and execution limits.
The new guide provides workflow design rules and examples for planning, implementation and review, QA, exploration, migrations, debugging, and pipeline composition.
Synchronization now processes each top-level bundled skill file. The test checks that the workflow reference exists and that only the workflows skill is discovered under the workflows directory.
Waishnav/devspace#409: Adds the persisted workflow runtime, CLI, and initial workflow skill documented here.
Waishnav/devspace#420: Documents the same workflow primitives and design patterns on the website.
Waishnav/devspace#421: Updates website workflow documentation and contract details for the same persisted workflow behavior.
Merge Risk: Low · up to 5d7dd
The guides still omit resume restrictions and misdescribe catchable sandbox limits. Skill synchronization can also prevent workspace opening when a supporting-file path is already a directory. These bounded issues warrant correction or explicit owner acceptance, but do not indicate broad production failure.

Add patterns.md: complete, runnable scripts for plan-with-critic,
implement-review-fix loops, a QA gate, explore-then-synthesize,
multi-lens review with verified findings, bake-offs, mapping a change
over many units, debugging with competing hypotheses, and composing
named workflows, plus design rules (schemas for decisions, bounded
loops, read-only readers in writing runs, workspace choice).
Clarify in reference.md that a named workspace is created by its first
call with isolation: "worktree" and reused by later calls.

Give the bake-off judge test evidence, or verify the winning worktree before returning it.
The judge prompt asks the judge to weigh tests, but it receives only each implementer's summary. The judge runs read-only in the checkout, which does not contain the candidate changes. The script returns the pick without checking the winning worktree. A candidate that claims passing tests without running them can win. Run each candidate's tests in its own worktree and pass those results to the judge.

Found while testing on beta.6: a workflow() nested past one level failed
the whole run even inside try/catch, by design.

Workflow skill (Waishnav#440):
- Resume docs now state the RECOVERY_REQUIRED refusal for runs whose
calls used allowed write mode, isolation, or workspace (read-only
ones included) and the RECOVERY_CONTEXT_CHANGED refusal.
- The limits note now says stack overflow ends the run but heap
exhaustion is a catchable InternalError, as verified in the sandbox.
- The QA-gate pattern no longer applies a final fix it never tests.
- A directory at a supporting skill file path is skipped instead of
failing every workspace open; SKILL.md stays strict.
agents models (Waishnav#441):
- A built-in provider left out of config can still be listed by name.
- providerErrorDetail reads the agent's stderr from process-launch
causes ({ error, stderr }), which also fixes ACP init errors in runs.
- ACP session/new and Codex model/list are bounded at 30s so one hung
harness cannot stall the whole command.
- opencode models launches through cross-spawn, so Windows .cmd shims
work like the server launch.
- Pi resolves the listed provider/id before a gateway's bare model id.
