Count the cloud work each install asks for, anonymously - #351
Conversation
Convex bills the database bytes each call reads. The cost harness measures what each action reads; what's missing is how often real users take those actions. CloudUsageMeter counts edit batches and ops sent, pages watched and their size, and offline-copy passes, full reads and rows read, and sends them as one anonymous cloud_usage event at most every 30 minutes through the existing AnalyticsService (no ids, names or content; off when analytics is off). Unreported counts are kept in the analytics box and sent on the next start, so short sessions aren't lost. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

A timer left pending failed a widget test (strategy_save_toast_test). The counts are now written to disk as they change and sent with the first count once the interval has passed, or on the next start. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Handle failures from the background Hive save.
Production meter calls schedule this timer, and _saveToDisk awaits Box.put. If Hive reports a storage error, the unawaited future rejects and reaches main.runZonedGuarded, whose default error handler shows an interactive notification. AnalyticsService.capture does not catch this storage operation.

Contain reportLeftover() when Hive clearing fails.
Startup calls this method without awaiting it. If box.delete(_pendingKey) rejects, the error bypasses _send and reaches runZonedGuarded's global error reporter. Catch the clearing failure and return before sending. Do not continue to _send, or an uncleared leftover can be reported again.

await _send(leftover, leftover: true);A handler for the background save timer or report() does not cover this separate reportLeftover() call.

Serialize all pending saves before deleting the stored counts.
_count() starts an unawaited Hive put, while report() starts a delete. Hive does not order concurrent put and delete operations. An earlier put can therefore resurrect old counts after the delete, or a later put can be deleted by the report. Awaiting earlier saves before the delete does not protect counts that arrive while the delete is pending. Serialize every pending save through one queue so later puts run after the delete.
This can make the anonymous cloud_usage telemetry inaccurate. It does not cause loss of the user's library data, so this is a minor telemetry-integrity issue rather than a major data-integrity incident.

Restore counts when report cleanup fails.
report() clears _counts before _save(null). If the underlying box.delete(_pendingKey) rejects, _send does not run, the unawaited timer future can reach the global error reporter, and the current in-memory counts are removed. What a real web build sent, after 5 drags on an 87-element page and a reload (PostHog pointed at a local capture server; the app was signed in against a local backend with dev data):
{"event":"cloud_usage","properties":{"distinct_id":"ce50dac7-…","$process_person_profile":false,"$geoip_disable":true,"app_version":"5.0.0","build_number":104,"release_channel":"stable","analytics_environment":"gt","platform":"web","pages_watched":1,"page_rows_watched":89,"batches_sent":5,"ops_sent":5,"interval_minutes":30,"from_last_session":true}}page_rows_watchedis 89 because the page holds 87 elements plus 2 tombstones. With analytics turned off in Settings → Privacy, a further drag and reload sent nothing. The drags stayed where they were dropped. We're moving to Convex Professional and deciding later what cloud should cost, and both need real per-user numbers. The cost harness already measures what each action reads from Convex (an edit batch, a page watch, an offline-copy full read). What we don't know is how often real users do those things. This adds one anonymous PostHog event that counts them.
What it sends. One
cloud_usageevent at most every 30 minutes, through the existingAnalyticsService. That service has no person profiles, no GeoIP, and is off when the user turns analytics off. The event carries counts only:batches_sent,ops_sentops:applyBatchthe op queue sendspages_watched,page_rows_watchedcopy_passes,copy_strategies_listedcopy_full_reads,copy_rows_readinterval_minutes,from_last_sessionNo ids, names or content.
No timers. The counts are written to the analytics Hive box as they change (at most once per edit batch). They're sent with the first count once 30 minutes have passed since the first one, or on the next start (
from_last_session: true) when the session ends sooner. Window closing isn't reliably interceptable, and an HTTP call during exit can't be trusted to finish. A first version used timers, and CI caught one left pending in a widget test, so there are none now.Turning counts into cost. For example,
page_rows_watched / pages_watchedgives the average page size, and each batch costs about 4.6 KB plus one page re-read (~0.67 KB per row) per the harness. The weekly Convex usage page on Pro gives the totals to check that model against.Checked so far
