  • harden: hashed root requirements lock, env-passed inputs instead of
interpolated expressions, abort job no longer discards a publish whose
outcome is unknown, cert audit failures are no longer swallowed
  • modernize: pyproject.toml with ruff/mypy/pytest config, actionlint
workflow, CodeQL actions language and re-pinned action, dependabot
covers the hashed CI requirements, job summaries
  • simplify: single Python pin, shared setup-ci-scripts action, ESP-IDF
activation moved to a script, per-event gate decisions, trimmed comments
    and dead modes
  • move tests of scripts/ into scripts/tests, keep CI-script tests under .github/scripts/tests
  • add tests for get_vars inputs, repo server upload/init/discard paths,
    merge_one, gen_staticfs, gen_env_header and cert_bundle

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Build Improvements

    • Firmware builds now provide clearer summaries of selected versions, channels, boards, and build decisions.
    • Static filesystem images and firmware packages use hash-verified dependencies.
  • Release Management

    • Publishing now reports when the result of a release operation is unknown and handles cleanup outcomes more clearly.
    • The dry-run publishing option is no longer available.
  • Certificate Management

    • Certificate checks now report expiry alerts and identify pins that can be safely retired.

📝 Walkthrough

This PR updates CI build planning, firmware packaging and publishing, certificate bundle generation and auditing, and Python build tooling. It also adds or revises tests, dependency locks, workflow checks, and lint and type-check configuration.

Changes: CI build and publishing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Build action setup and caching
.github/actions/build-*, .github/actions/setup-*, .github/dependabot.yml
Actions share Python setup, use hash-verified requirements, and update cache-key handling. The compilation-database action accepts a build target, and firmware build steps update their cache and staging inputs.
Build planning and event decisions
.github/scripts/ci_build_gate.py, .github/scripts/get_vars.py, .github/scripts/gha.py, .github/scripts/github_api.py, .github/scripts/repo_server_policy.py, .github/scripts/tests/*
The gate routes supported events through separate decision helpers. Planning extracts version, channel, and board selection, and writes workflow summaries. Shared GitHub API and Actions helpers support the scripts.
Repository server publishing lifecycle
.github/actions/repo-server-publish/action.yml, .github/scripts/repo_server_publish.py, .github/scripts/repo_server_token.py, .github/scripts/tests/test_repo_server_*, .changes/ci-repository-server-only-deploy.md
Publishing removes dry-run and reports an unknown publish outcome. Discard results distinguish discarded, already-closed, and failed releases. The workflow-facing action and tests reflect these states.
Workflow integration and analysis
.github/workflows/ci-build.yml, .github/workflows/codeql.yml, .github/workflows/*
The CI workflow uses shared setup and publishing outputs, adds tag-build attestations, and updates job conditions. Other workflow updates include CodeQL language coverage, workflow linting, and shell defaults.

Certificate bundle generation and audit

Layer / File(s) Summary
Certificate loading and bundle generation
certificates/cert_bundle.py, scripts/tests/test_cert_bundle.py
Certificate loading uses script-relative paths and shared validation. Generation checks pinned-certificate expiry, deduplicates certificates, and writes output files atomically.
Certificate audit and workflow reporting
certificates/cert_bundle.py, .github/workflows/pinned-cert-audit.yml
The audit reports expiry alerts and removable pins. The workflow writes an audit summary, uses a GitHub App token for retirement pull requests, and handles audit failures.

Firmware build tooling and validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Board, image, and partition data
scripts/utils/boards.py, scripts/utils/espimage.py, scripts/utils/partitions.py, scripts/utils/stamping.py, scripts/tests/*
Board parsing uses extracted validation helpers and descriptor-based limits. Image parsing uses named constants, and partition records use a TypedDict. Tests share an empty-descriptor helper.
Build and generation command-line tools
scripts/build.py, scripts/fetch_flatc.py, scripts/gen_dep_graph.py, scripts/gen_env_header.py, scripts/generate_schemas.py, scripts/merge_image.py, scripts/tests/test_gen_env_header.py, scripts/tests/test_merge_image.py
Build and generation scripts use shared repository paths, optional argument lists, and explicit return codes. Environment-header construction is split into board and version helpers.
Static filesystem generation and tests
scripts/gen_staticfs.py, scripts/tests/test_build_scripts.py
Static filesystem generation uses Path operations and a shared lookahead constant. Tests cover asset compression, missing index files, packed image contents, and size validation.
Python dependency and quality checks
pyproject.toml, requirements.in, requirements.txt, .github/scripts/requirements-dev.txt, .github/workflows/script-tests.yml, README.md, CMakeLists.txt
The PR adds Python project configuration and hash-locked requirements. The script-test workflow installs the configured dependencies and runs Ruff, mypy, and pytest.

No production behavior breaks, but the new workflow-lint check fails on a ShellCheck diagnostic in host-tests.yml, and a few docs and test hygiene items need fixing. Staged firmware assets could also differ byte-for-byte across Python versions. These are small fixes that can be made before or shortly after merge.

Scope the App token to the permissions this job needs.

actions/create-github-app-token creates a token with all permissions of the App installation by default. zizmor reports this as github-app. This job only pushes a branch and opens a PR. The token is also persisted in .git/config by actions/checkout and stays available to later steps, including pip install.

Set the permission-* inputs so the token has only the write access that the retire-pin step needs.

Review comments at @.github/scripts/requirements-dev.txt:

the root requirements with hash verification before running tests, so
dependencies needed by tests under scripts/tests are available in a fresh
virtual environment.

Review comments at @.github/scripts/requirements.txt:

to also clear GITHUB_STEP_SUMMARY, preventing test calls from writing to the
runner’s job summary.

Review comments at @.github/workflows/workflow-lint.yml:
- Around line 30-32: In the host-tests workflow, store the expanded host-test
executable wildcard in an array before invoking it, and execute the array so
ShellCheck no longer flags the wildcard used directly as a command.

Review comments at @scripts/gen_staticfs.py:
- Around line 92-93: Update the gzip generation in the staging flow to preserve
identical header bytes across supported Python versions. Use gzip.GzipFile with
an empty filename and mtime=0, or normalize the OS header byte before writing;
keep the output deterministic for identical asset content.
