Summary

Makes the firmware buildable from any editor or terminal without the VS Code ESP-IDF extension
and without sourcing an export script first, and documents the whole local workflow.

Build fixes

  • A build without a board fragment fell back to ESP-IDF's stock 2 MB flash and 1 MB single-app
table. The app overflowed it and the table had no static0, which the staticfs target then
tried to size from an unset variable because its guard compared an undefined CMake variable
name to "". sdkconfig.defaults now carries the 4 MB flash and partitions/ota_4mb.csv
that every board already uses, and the guard is quoted so a missing static0 skips the target
    with the intended warning.
  • dependencies.lock picks up json_generator 2.1.0.

ESP-IDF activation

  • scripts/utils/idfenv.py finds an ESP-IDF registered by the Espressif installer
(eim_idf.json) and applies its activation environment. scripts/build.py uses it when
IDF_PATH is unset and sets PYTHONUTF8 for the idf.py it launches, so builds work from a
    plain Windows terminal.
  • scripts/idfenv.sh and scripts/idfenv.bat export the same environment for a shell, and
double as a CLion toolchain environment file.

CMake presets and CLion

  • CMakePresets.json has a configure and a build preset per board, generated by
scripts/gen_cmake_presets.py with a test that fails on drift.
  • Given only OPENSHOCK_BOARD, the root CMakeLists.txt derives the chip and sdkconfig layers
from boards/<board>.defaults the way the build script does, activates ESP-IDF itself when
the shell did not, and hands ninja and the compiler directory to the bootloader's nested
configure. cmake --preset <board> and cmake --build --preset <board> work from a bare
shell. Preset builds land in build/<board>/, shared with scripts/build.py.

VS Code

  • .vscode/ is tracked: tasks that call scripts/build.py (build, app only, flash, monitor,
menuconfig, full clean, update managed components, Python checks, frontend), clangd settings,
and extension recommendations with the ESP-IDF extension, cpptools and PlatformIO marked
unwanted. launch.json and c_cpp_properties.json stay local.
  • .clangd reads build/compile_commands.json, which the build script refreshes from the last
board or variant it built. Requires Espressif's esp-clangd; clangd.path goes in user settings.

Docs

  • docs/DEVELOPING.md: toolchain setup, activation, building boards and variants, board file
layout, VS Code, CLion first-time setup, plain CMake, frontend and staticfs, packaged and merged
images, host and script tests, and every dependency update path (managed components, ESP-IDF,
Python, frontend, FlatBuffers schemas, TLS trust store).
  • README's Contribute section links to it instead of the PlatformIO-era instructions.

Verification

  • cmake --preset OpenShock-Core-V1 then --build --target app from a PowerShell with no
ESP-IDF variables: configures, builds the nested bootloader, produces a stamped S3 image.
  • python scripts/build.py OpenShock-Core-V2 reconfigure with no ESP-IDF variables: activates
    and refreshes build/compile_commands.json.
  • scripts/idfenv.sh under bash and sh, scripts/idfenv.bat under cmd.
  • 141 script tests pass, ruff clean, mypy unchanged.

Notes

  • Preset builds run without ccache (idf.py turns it on) and the bootloader configure prints a
harmless ESP_ROM_ELF_DIR warning when the shell is not exported. Both are documented.
  • dependencies.lock's target line flipped from esp32s3 to esp32 as a side effect of a
fragment-less update-dependencies; it does not affect the resolved components.
  • Not tested inside CLion itself; the preset flow was verified from the command line.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added board-specific build presets and VS Code tasks for building, flashing, monitoring, and configuring firmware, plus frontend development and checks.
    • Builds can now discover and activate a registered ESP-IDF installation when one is not already configured.
    • Firmware defaults now use a shared 4 MB flash layout with OTA support.
  • Documentation

    • Added a development guide covering setup, builds, flashing, testing, and dependency updates.
  • Improvements

    • Updated editor recommendations and settings for C++, Python, and frontend development.

A plain idf.py build (no board fragment) fell back to ESP-IDF's stock 2 MB
flash and 1 MB single-app partition table. The 1.24 MB app overflowed it and
the table had no static0 partition, which the staticfs target then tried to
size from an unset variable because the guard compared an undefined CMake
variable name to the empty string.

Set the 4 MB flash and the ota_4mb.csv table in sdkconfig.defaults, which
every board already uses, and quote the guard so a missing static0 skips the
target with the intended warning. dependencies.lock picks up json_generator
2.1.0 from idf.py update-dependencies.
- scripts/utils/idfenv.py finds an ESP-IDF registered by the Espressif
installer (eim_idf.json) and applies its activation environment.
scripts/build.py uses it when IDF_PATH is unset and sets PYTHONUTF8 for
idf.py, so builds work from a plain Windows terminal.
- The root CMakeLists.txt derives chip and sdkconfig layers from
  boards/<board>.defaults when given only OPENSHOCK_BOARD, activates ESP-IDF
itself when the shell did not, and hands ninja and the compiler directory
to the bootloader's nested configure. CMakePresets.json (generated by
  scripts/gen_cmake_presets.py, drift-tested) has a configure and build
preset per board for CLion and `cmake --preset`.
- scripts/idfenv.sh and scripts/idfenv.bat export the same environment for
a shell or as a CLion toolchain environment file.
- .vscode/ is tracked: tasks through scripts/build.py, clangd settings and
extension recommendations. .clangd reads build/compile_commands.json, which
the build script refreshes from the last build.
- docs/DEVELOPING.md documents toolchain setup, building, testing, editor
setup and every dependency update path; README's Contribute section links
  to it.
requirements.txt pins cryptography above what ESP-IDF 6.1 constrains, so
installing it into the IDF venv breaks activation. Point developers at a
separate venv and note littlefs-python as the one package staticfs needs in
the IDF venv.

📝 Walkthrough

This PR adds ESP-IDF environment discovery for CMake and build scripts, board-specific CMake presets and default partition settings, compilation database publication, and VS Code tasks and settings. It also adds developer setup, build, test, and dependency-update documentation.

Changes: Firmware development workflow

Layer / File(s) Summary
ESP-IDF activation and CMake setup
CMakeLists.txt, scripts/utils/idfenv.py, scripts/idfenv.*, scripts/build.py, scripts/tests/test_idfenv.py
CMake and build scripts can locate and activate ESP-IDF environments. Shell wrappers expose the activated environment. Tests cover environment discovery, activation, and environment-dump handling.
Board configuration and presets
CMakeLists.txt, CMakePresets.json, scripts/gen_cmake_presets.py, scripts/tests/test_cmake_presets.py, sdkconfig.defaults
CMake presets define configure and build presets for each board. The generator and tests check the preset data. The default SDK configuration selects the 4 MB OTA partition table.
Build execution and compilation database
scripts/build.py, scripts/tests/test_build_cli.py, .clangd
Successful builds publish the compilation database to the shared build directory. clangd uses that database and applies the configured diagnostic and compiler-flag settings. Tests cover build environment variables, activation, errors, and database publication.
Editor workspace and tasks
.gitignore, .vscode/*
VS Code settings configure language tools, formatting, and file exclusions. Tasks prompt for a board and serial port, and provide firmware, script-check, and frontend commands.
Developer guide and contribution requirements
README.md, docs/DEVELOPING.md
The guide covers tool setup, board builds, IDE workflows, frontend and image generation, testing, and dependency updates. The README links to the guide and lists development requirements.

Replace or document the remaining PlatformIO workflow.

The README still directs contributors to flash through PlatformIO in VS Code, while docs/DEVELOPING.md documents scripts/build.py, VS Code tasks, and CMake presets instead. If PlatformIO remains supported, document its setup and dependencies in docs/DEVELOPING.md; otherwise replace this sentence with the documented workflow.

idf.py in ESP-IDF 6.1 configures with a CMake preset whenever a
CMakePresets.json exists: the one named 'default', else the first in the
file. The first was the hidden 'openshock' base, which CMake refuses, so
every build through scripts/build.py failed in CI and locally.

Rename the base preset to a visible 'default' with no board; the script's
-B and -D arguments override its binaryDir and cache, so idf.py builds
are unchanged and `cmake --preset <board>` still inherits from it. A test
pins the name and visibility so the failure cannot come back silently.
- Publish build/compile_commands.json from the build itself, so a
`cmake --build --preset <board>` feeds clangd like scripts/build.py does
- Drop the absolute --compile-commands-dir from .vscode/settings.json;
.clangd already names the directory relative to the repo
- Split the check tasks into sequenced dependencies instead of `&&`,
which Windows PowerShell 5.1 cannot parse
- Document venv activation and ESPPORT for PowerShell and cmd
- Replace the README's PlatformIO flashing sentence with the current flow
idf.py configures with CCACHE_ENABLE, and ESP-IDF then sets the compile
launcher to the bare word `ccache` although it found the program at an
absolute path. Outside an exported shell, CLion and a plain
`cmake --build --preset <board>` on that tree failed every compile with
"CreateProcess failed: The system cannot find the file specified".

Set RULE_LAUNCH_COMPILE to CCACHE_FOUND after project(), so the rules
carry the full path and the same tree builds from any editor.
One change file per change on the branch: the editor-independent build
setup (added), the partition table for a build without a board fragment
(fixed) and the json_generator bump (chore). The guide now says that
every build publishes the compile database and that a script-configured
tree keeps ccache when CLion or a bare shell builds it.
