launch --background: honor --log-file and COMFY_CLI_BACKGROUND_LOG for the log path - #1059
background_launch() hardcodes the log to <workspace>/user/comfyui_<port>.log. comfy-cli is increasingly started by a supervisor (project launchers, dev scripts, systemd units) whose other services log where the supervisor says, not where the workspace says.
comfy launch --background --log-file <path> and the COMFY_CLI_BACKGROUND_LOG env var (for children comfy-cli cannot be given flags) replace the path verbatim: a supervisor that names the file owns the naming too, so the <port> suffix logic does not apply.
The chosen path is recorded under CONFIG_KEY_BACKGROUND_LOG exactly like the default, so comfy logs and comfy stop resolve a redirected log with no further changes.
Tests pin the flag threading down to the monitor, the override, the env var, and the unchanged default.
16 launch tests pass locally.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Background launches can now write logs to a selected file using --log-file or the COMFY_CLI_BACKGROUND_LOG environment variable. An explicit file selection takes precedence; otherwise, logs use the existing default location.
Bug Fixes
Launch commands now recognize both --port VALUE and --port=VALUE formats and validate that the selected port is within the supported range.
Documentation
Updated the background-launch guide with the available log-file options.
Background launch now accepts a log-file option or environment setting. It resolves the selected path, records it in configuration, and documents the available settings.
Changes: Background launch log paths
Layer / File(s)
Summary
CLI option and launch wiring comfy_cli/cmdline.py, comfy_cli/command/launch.py, README.md
The CLI adds --log-file and forwards its value through background launch to the monitor. The README documents the option and COMFY_CLI_BACKGROUND_LOG.
Path selection and configuration comfy_cli/command/launch.py, tests/comfy_cli/command/test_launch_background.py
The monitor uses an explicit override or environment setting as an absolute path, or the workspace default. Configuration writes escape %, and log-path lookup reverses that escaping. Tests cover forwarding and path selection.
Background launches can fail when the CLI is not on PATH, and some valid configured log paths cannot be resolved by comfy logs or comfy stop.

Full details: Architecture Decision Compliance
Explanation
The standing failure remains. The diff adds a durable compatibility and data-ownership contract: comfy_cli/cmdline.py:2568-2584 adds public --log-file; comfy_cli/command/launch.py:587-596 defines supervisor path ownership and environment-variable behavior; and comfy_cli/command/launch.py:664-672, 704-709, and 871-872 persist and consume the selected path. No ADR is added or amended. The Accepted ADRs cover machine output, dependency resolution, and workflow operations, so none governs this contract. The PR description explains the operational need but does not explain why the contract is local and reversible.
Resolution
Add or amend an ADR for the background log-path contract. Record the precedence of --log-file, COMFY_CLI_BACKGROUND_LOG, and the default; the absolute-path and port-suffix rules; the CONFIG_KEY_BACKGROUND_LOG persistence and consumer invariant; and compatibility or revisit conditions. Alternatively, document in the PR and implementation why this public compatibility and data-ownership contract is intentionally local and reversible.

Resolve the invoked executable before changing directories.
If a user invokes ./venv/bin/comfy --workspace=/other/workspace launch --background, launch() changes directories before this check. The relative sys.argv[0] no longer identifies the invoked executable. The code then falls back to PATH, so the background launch can fail when that virtual environment is not on PATH. Capture the invocation path before os.chdir(), and resolve bare command names through PATH rather than against the workspace.

Replace the read-only property patches in both tests.
ConfigManager.__init__ assigns self.background = None. These patches make background a property without a setter, so both tests raise AttributeError before background_launch selects an executable. Mock the ConfigManager constructor with an instance whose background value is None.

…r the log path
background_launch hardcodes the log to <workspace>/user/comfyui_<port>.log.
comfy-cli is increasingly started by a supervisor (project launchers,
systemd units) whose other services log where the supervisor says, not
where the workspace says (GitHub Comfy-Org#692).
--log-file (and the COMFY_CLI_BACKGROUND_LOG env var for children comfy-cli
cannot be edited to pass flags) replaces the path verbatim: a supervisor that
names the file owns the naming too, so the <port> suffix logic does not apply.
The chosen path is recorded under CONFIG_KEY_BACKGROUND_LOG, so comfy logs
and comfy stop resolve it like any other background log. Tests pin the
threading, the override, the env var and the unchanged default.
A --log-file like /tmp/run%20.log made every later cfg.get of the
recorded key raise InterpolationSyntaxError, killing the monitor before
the child starts. The path is stored with %% escaping and unescaped on
the single read site.

Remove the second percent unescaping.
ConfigManager.get() already applies ConfigParser interpolation, so %% is returned as %. The extra replacement corrupts valid paths containing adjacent percent signs. For example, /tmp/run%%.log is stored as %%%%, read as %%, then changed to %.comfy logs cannot resolve the recorded path.

The argv finding is real on this branch's base — it is fixed by #1058 (_resolve_comfy_exec anchors sys.argv[0] before the chdir), which this PR is stacked behind; I will rebase onto it as soon as it merges so the diff stays single-purpose.
