launch --background: re-exec the invoked binary, not PATH's comfy - #1058
background_launch() re-execs the CLI as a bare "comfy" through subprocess.Popen, so the child is resolved via PATH. When comfy-cli is invoked by its own path from a project-local venv that isn't on PATH (/path/to/.venv/bin/comfy launch --background, the normal way a launcher calls a console script it installed), the spawn raises FileNotFoundError and the launch dies with an unhandled traceback.
The fix re-execs sys.argv[0], absolutized. sys.argv[0] is exactly the invoked console-script path in both the PATH and by-path cases; the old shutil.which("comfy") lookup stays as the fallback for module invocations (python -m comfy_cli), where argv[0] is __main__.py and must not be re-exec'd.
Two regression tests pin both paths, alongside the existing launch resolution tests. 66 launch-adjacent tests pass locally.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Background launches now reuse the executable used to start the command when it is available, helping installations outside the system path relaunch correctly. If that executable cannot be used, the command is resolved from the system path, with a default command as a fallback. Module-style launches continue to use the available command resolution behavior.

Walkthrough
Background launches now use the invoked executable path when it is an existing non-.py file. Otherwise, they resolve comfy through PATH or use the bare command. Tests cover direct executable invocation and fallback resolution.
Changes: Background Launch
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Resolve and test the relaunch executable comfy_cli/command/launch.py, tests/comfy_cli/test_launch_python_resolution.py
launch captures the absolute invocation path before changing directories and passes it to background_launch. Background relaunch uses that path when it is an existing non-.py file. Otherwise, it uses shutil.which("comfy") or falls back to "comfy". Tests cover direct executable invocation, module-style invocation, and missing paths.
Background launch now works when the CLI is invoked by path from a virtual environment that is not on PATH. One narrow edge case remains: a bare command name could be resolved against the current directory instead of PATH. Fix this before or soon after merge; the risk is small.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue [#691] requires comfy launch --background to work when the CLI is invoked by its own path and that path is not on PATH. launch() captures os.path.abspath(sys.argv[0]) before changing directories. background_launch() passes that path to _resolve_comfy_exec(), which re-execs an existing non-.py file. Module invocation falls back to shutil.which("comfy"). The added tests cover the by-path and module-invocation cases. The issue's clearer FileNotFoundError message is a secondary note, not a required objective.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes are within issue [#691]. The production changes resolve the background re-exec executable and preserve the module-invocation fallback. The tests verify both resolution paths and the helper behavior. No unrelated functional changes appear in the whole-PR diff.
Full details: Architecture Decision Compliance
Explanation
PASS. The diff changes background relaunch executable resolution in comfy_cli/command/launch.py (lines 443-478 and 545-553). It does not change machine-output, dependency-resolution, or workflow-operation architecture covered by the Accepted ADRs docs/adr/AUTOMATION-0003-one-versioned-machine-output-dialect.md, docs/adr/DEPENDENCIES-0001-delegate-unified-resolution-to-comfyui-manager.md, and docs/adr/OPERATIONS-0002-version-structured-workflow-operations.md. The new executable selection is a local, reversible implementation detail, and the PR description explains its scope and rationale. No ADR conflict or unrecorded durable architectural decision applies.

background_launch spawns the child as a bare "comfy", resolved
through PATH. When comfy-cli is invoked by its own path from a
project-local venv that isn't on PATH (the normal way a launcher or
script calls a console script it installed), the spawn dies with
FileNotFoundError and the launch crashes (GitHub Comfy-Org#691).
Re-exec sys.argv[0] instead, absolutized in launch() BEFORE the chdir
into the workspace, so a relative invocation (./venv/bin/comfy)
anchors to the caller's cwd and not to the workspace; the old PATH
lookup stays as the fallback for module invocations (python -m
comfy_cli) via _resolve_comfy_exec. Regression tests pin all paths.

Preserve bare command names for PATH lookup.
If an entrypoint provides bare sys.argv[0] == "comfy", os.path.abspath points to <caller cwd>/comfy. _resolve_comfy_exec then selects that file when it exists and is not a .py file. A background launch can execute an unrelated local file.
Make only explicit paths absolute before chdir; pass bare names to shutil.which.

Review comment at @comfy_cli/command/launch.py at line 449:
Update how `invoked` is assigned in the launch flow: make `sys.argv[0]` absolute
only when it is an explicit path, and preserve bare command names so
`_resolve_comfy_exec` can resolve them through `PATH` with `shutil.which`.

Fixes #691.
background_launch()re-execs the CLI as a bare"comfy"throughsubprocess.Popen, so the child is resolved viaPATH. When comfy-cli is invoked by its own path from a project-local venv that isn't on PATH (/path/to/.venv/bin/comfy launch --background, the normal way a launcher calls a console script it installed), the spawn raisesFileNotFoundErrorand the launch dies with an unhandled traceback. The fix re-execs
sys.argv[0], absolutized.sys.argv[0]is exactly the invoked console-script path in both the PATH and by-path cases; the oldshutil.which("comfy")lookup stays as the fallback for module invocations (python -m comfy_cli), whereargv[0]is__main__.pyand must not be re-exec'd.Two regression tests pin both paths, alongside the existing launch resolution tests. 66 launch-adjacent tests pass locally.
