Summary

Fixes #1098 where exports stall indefinitely at ~2% on timelines containing split/trimmed clips or when hardware encoders buffer frames.

Root Causes

  1. Demuxer Reader Drain Stall (streamingDecodePipeline.ts):
During multi-segment clip timelines, each clip run was previously drained with while (!decodeDone) before calling reader.cancel(). This forced the background feedPromise to demux and decode all remaining chunks of the file to EOF on every cut.
  2. Hardware Encoder Backpressure Deadlock (ModernVideoExporter.ts):
When nativeH264Encoder.encodeQueueSize >= 64, encodeRenderedFrameNative paused input until capacity was notified. Because capacity notifications were only triggered when flushPendingNativeWriteBatch collected 12 chunks, hardware encoders (QuickSync, NVENC, AMF) holding GOP/lookahead frames caused an indefinite mutual wait (exporter waiting on encoder output, encoder waiting on new input frames).

Changes

  • streamingDecodePipeline.ts:
    • Added readerCancelled = true flag to abort the background demuxer loop immediately once a run segment completes.
    • Cancelled the reader and notified backpressure before draining leftover decoded frames.
  • modernVideoExporter.ts:
    • Invoked notifyEncodeCapacityAvailable() immediately on each emitted output chunk.
    • Force-flushed pending write chunk batches before awaiting capacity when encodeQueueSize >= 64.
    • Added a 50ms safety timeout to waitForEncodeCapacity() to permanently prevent deadlocks from hardware encoder lookahead buffering.
  • Tests:
    • Added tests in streamingDecoder.test.ts verifying prompt reader cancellation upon run completion and multi-run timeline decoding.
    • Added tests in modernVideoExporter.fallback.test.ts verifying backpressure unblocking, timeout recovery, queue-limit batch flushing, and end-to-end clip export progressing to 100% and finalizing.

Test Verification

All 53 tests passed:

  • streamingDecoder.test.ts (26 tests)
  • modernVideoExporter.fallback.test.ts (18 tests)
  • audioEncoder.test.ts (9 tests)

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved video export reliability across multiple clip regions, with more consistent frame progress and completion reporting.
    • Improved handling of encoder capacity and pending output, helping exports continue smoothly when processing queues are full.
    • Improved streaming of short clips and clips with reordered source ranges by stopping unnecessary reads and handling decoded frames more consistently.
    • Applied the configured write limit when native export starts, for more consistent export behavior across supported export settings.

📝 Walkthrough

The video export pipeline now applies native write limits after deferred startup and manages encode-capacity waits. The streaming decode pipeline stops feed work after reader cancellation and awaits cancellation before draining decoded frames. Tests cover encoder capacity, export progress, and reader cancellation.

Changes: Video export pipeline

Layer / File(s) Summary
Native encoder capacity handling
src/lib/exporter/modernVideoExporter.ts, src/lib/exporter/modernVideoExporter.fallback.test.ts
Deferred native export sets the native write limit. When encoder capacity is full, the exporter flushes pending write chunks before waiting. Capacity waiters resolve after notification or a 50 ms timeout. Tests cover these behaviors and verify export progress through 30 frames to finalization.
Streaming decoder reader cancellation
src/lib/exporter/streamingDecodePipeline.ts, src/lib/exporter/streamingDecoder.test.ts, vitest.config.ts
The decode pipeline stops feed and backpressure work after reader cancellation, skips flushing and error recording, then awaits cancellation before draining in-flight frames. Tests cover short clips and reordered source ranges. Vitest CSS configuration sets PostCSS plugins to an empty array.

An export can still stall indefinitely when the native encoder stops draining its queue without reporting an error. Bound the total wait before merging.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #1098 requires video export to complete. The decoder now cancels the reader before draining remaining frames. The native exporter now flushes pending batches, wakes capacity waiters for output chunks, and times out capacity waits. Tests cover reader cancellation, multi-run decoding, backpressure recovery, and clip export finalization.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes remain within issue #1098. Production changes address decoder stalls and encoder backpressure. New tests verify these changes. The Vitest PostCSS configuration supports the test setup. No unrelated product behavior is demonstrated.

Exercise the native output callback in this test.

This test calls notifyEncodeCapacityAvailable() directly. It still passes if the notification is removed from the native VideoEncoder output callback. Capture that callback with a mock encoder, deliver a chunk through it, and assert that the waiter resolves while the chunk remains queued.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Bound the total native capacity wait.

If the native encoder stops reducing encodeQueueSize without reporting an error, each 50 ms timeout restarts the loop in encodeRenderedFrameNative(). The export still waits indefinitely. Add a total stall deadline. If the deadline expires, throw an encoder error so export() can attempt its WebCodecs fallback.
