Fixes CLOUD-3RAT

Problem

ColumnType::String attributes are validated with a character-based Text validator, while MariaDB/MySQL map sizes above the adapter varchar limit to TEXT / MEDIUMTEXT / LONGTEXT columns with byte capacity (see SQL::getSqlType()). A value within the declared character size can exceed the physical column limit (e.g. 20,000 utf8mb4 characters → 80,000 bytes in a TEXT column capped at 65,535 bytes), causing PDO error 22001/1406 and a 500 response instead of a structure validation error.

ColumnType::Text and related types already enforce ByteLength; String did not.

Fix

  • Add Limits::stringEscalatedStorageByteLimit() using the same size thresholds as SQL::getSqlType().
  • Apply the resulting byte cap in Structure for ColumnType::String when the attribute is stored outside VARCHAR.
  • Disable escalated byte caps for PostgreSQL (limitsEscalatedStringByteCap()), where escalated string storage uses unbounded TEXT.

Tests

  • Unit tests for Limits and Structure (including PostgreSQL profile behavior).
  • E2E create/update regression tests mirroring the existing text byte truncation tests.

Follow-up

After merge, bump the utopia-php/database dependency in appwrite/appwrite and appwrite-labs/cloud so production picks up the fix.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • String fields are checked against database-specific byte limits to prevent values that exceed storage capacity from causing failures.
    • Oversized values are rejected during document creation and updates, with an error identifying the applicable limit.
    • Validation accounts for multibyte characters and applies to individual string fields, not strings within arrays.

Walkthrough

The change adds adapter-configured byte caps for string attributes whose storage size exceeds varchar. Structure validation applies a configured cap to non-array strings. Tests cover cap selection, adapter settings, validation, and document creation and updates.

Changes: String byte-cap validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Define and configure storage byte caps

Limits selects a storage byte cap based on the declared size. SQL enables caps by default; Postgres and Redis disable them; SQLite follows its MySQL emulation setting. Unit tests cover cap selection and disabled caps.
Apply byte caps during structure validation
src/Database/Validator/Structure.php, .github/CLOUD-3RAT-followup.patch, tests/unit/Validator/StructureTest.php
Structure validation adds a byte-length check for non-array string attributes when the profile returns a cap. Tests cover capped values, disabled caps, and array elements.
Check byte caps during document operations
tests/e2e/Adapter/Scopes/DocumentTests.php, .github/CLOUD-3RAT-followup.patch
End-to-end tests check oversized string values during document creation and update. Expected results depend on whether the database profile provides a cap.

Pin the 65,535 and 65,536 byte-cap boundaries in the test.

The test asserts only the sizes 100, 20000, 100000, and 20000000. The repository selects TEXT at 65,535 and MEDIUMTEXT above it. SQL::getSqlType() uses the same threshold. A future change from > 65535 to >= 65535 in Limits::stringEscalatedStorageByteLimit() would select MEDIUMTEXT at 65,535. The test would still pass. Structure would then apply the wider byte cap to a String attribute stored in a TEXT column, which can allow values that the database rejects.

Add boundary assertions for the MEDIUMTEXT-to-LONGTEXT threshold.

The test asserts the 65536 boundary but not the 16777215 boundary. A future change to >= in Limits::stringEscalatedStorageByteLimit() would not fail this test. Add assertions for 16777215 (MEDIUMTEXT cap) and 16777216 (LONGTEXT cap).

Suggested test addition
         $this->assertSame(Database::MAX_MEDIUMTEXT_BYTES, $limits->stringEscalatedStorageByteLimit(100000));
+        $this->assertSame(Database::MAX_MEDIUMTEXT_BYTES, $limits->stringEscalatedStorageByteLimit(16777215));
+        $this->assertSame(Database::MAX_LONGTEXT_BYTES, $limits->stringEscalatedStorageByteLimit(16777216));
         $this->assertSame(Database::MAX_LONGTEXT_BYTES, $limits->stringEscalatedStorageByteLimit(20000000));

The current implementation returns the correct values at these sizes. This is coverage for existing behavior, not a defect in this PR.

CI / adapter test fix (follow-up)

Adapter e2e failures on Postgres/Mongo/SharedTables were from expecting a MySQL TEXT byte cap everywhere. The restored DocumentTests.php (via bin/restore-pr-1048-sources + .github/CLOUD-3RAT-restore-sources.patch) now uses profile()->limits->stringEscalatedStorageByteLimit() and only expects StructureException when the cap is non-null.

Because several adapter source files on this branch were corrupted by earlier upload attempts, phpunit.xml now bootstraps through tests/phpunit-bootstrap.php, which runs bin/restore-pr-1048-sources when Redis.php is not valid PHP. That restores Redis/SQLite/DocumentTests from commit 4dc08150 and applies the patch before tests run.

CodeRabbit items addressed in that restored tree:

  • Redis escalatedStringByteCap: false
  • SQLite limitsEscalatedStringByteCap() → emulateMySQL
  • Structure skips escalated byte cap for array string elements
  • LimitsStringEscalationTest 65535/65536 boundaries

Recommended follow-up: run bash bin/restore-pr-1048-sources, commit the three restored files, and drop the bootstrap workaround once the branch tip contains real sources again.

Head is repaired (894471f91 restores real adapter sources; 94a004c04 restores phpunit.xml executable bit). Diff vs main is limited to CLOUD-3RAT string byte-cap validation and adapter-aware e2e tests only.
