What

Three problems in the watsonx instrumentation:

  1. _wrap calls _handle_input(span, event_logger, name, instance, args, kwargs) but the function takes an extra, unused response_counter before args. The TypeError is swallowed by @dont_throw, so the request model, decoding parameters and prompt are never recorded on watsonx spans.
  2. If the wrapped call raises, the span is never ended and no error is recorded (only the exception counter is bumped).
  3. _build_and_set_stream_response ends the span only after the stream has been consumed to the end, so a stream that fails part-way or is closed early leaks the span.

Change

  • Drop the unused response_counter parameter from _handle_input.
  • When the wrapped call raises, set error.type, record the exception, set the ERROR status and end the span before re-raising (same shape as the mistralai/together instrumentations).
  • Run the stream generator's loop and response handling inside try/finally: if the stream raises, record the exception and set the ERROR status; the span is always ended in finally. Most of the diff there is re-indentation (git diff -w is small).

Tests

New tests/traces/test_failure_paths.py (4 tests, no cassettes): request attributes recorded, span finished with ERROR when the call raises, span finished with ERROR status and error.type when the stream raises, span finished when the stream is closed early. All 4 fail on main and pass with the change. The existing watsonx tests skip themselves when ibm_watsonx_ai is not installed, which is why the first problem went unnoticed, so the new tests call the wrapper directly.

packages/opentelemetry-instrumentation-watsonx tests: 12 passed. ruff check clean. Run with uv sync --frozen --group test --group dev in the package and .venv/bin/python -m pytest tests -p no:sugar.

This PR was made with Claude Code (Anthropic); the tests above were run on main and on this branch.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved Watsonx tracing for failed synchronous and streaming requests.
    • Failed operations now record exception details, error types, and failure status.
    • Spans are reliably completed even when streaming responses fail or are abandoned.
    • Successful streaming responses continue to record existing response and metric information.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for synchronous failures, streaming failures, abandoned streams, and associated span attributes.

…or stream fails

_wrap called _handle_input with six arguments although it takes seven (an
unused response_counter sat in the middle). The resulting TypeError was
swallowed by @dont_throw, so the request model, decoding parameters and
prompt were never recorded on watsonx spans. Drop the unused parameter.

The span was also never ended when the wrapped call raised, and the
streaming generator only ended it after the stream had been consumed to the
end, so a stream that failed mid-way or was closed early leaked the span.
End the span with an error status when the call raises, record the error when the stream raises, and end it in a
finally block in the stream generator.

Tests: request attributes are recorded, and the span is finished when the
call fails, when the stream fails and when the stream is closed early. They
use the wrapper directly because the existing tests skip when
ibm_watsonx_ai is not installed.

📝 Walkthrough

Watsonx instrumentation now records synchronous and streaming exceptions on spans, sets error status, and ends spans. Added tracing tests cover request attributes, failure handling, and closing an incompletely consumed stream.

Changes: Watsonx span failure handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Record failures and finish spans
packages/opentelemetry-instrumentation-watsonx/opentelemetry/instrumentation/watsonx/__init__.py, packages/opentelemetry-instrumentation-watsonx/tests/traces/test_failure_paths.py
Synchronous and streaming failures now record exception type and exception details, set error status, and end spans. Tests cover request attributes, failure propagation, and incomplete stream closure. The unused response_counter parameter was removed from _handle_input.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~12 minutes

Change: Bug fix

Suggested reviewers: huang-cn

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 03f73

Requests using supported Watsonx parameter objects still lose prompt and event attributes. This is a bounded instrumentation gap that can be fixed before merging or accepted as a follow-up.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 03f73

The change improves failure visibility and span cleanup without adding a public endpoint or expanding execution privileges. Prompt-capture controls remain in place. Exception details are newly recorded without those controls, but the available evidence does not establish that they contain sensitive request data.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The affected security surface is telemetry produced by instrumented Watsonx calls. Exposure depends on application inputs, exception contents, and configured telemetry recipients; deployment-specific recipients and tenant boundaries are not established by the inspected source.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — TRACELOOP_TRACE_CONTENT defaults to enabled. Setting it to false disables prompt attributes and removes message-event content unless the existing context override enables capture. The new exception-recording paths do not consult this control. Available Watsonx tests use benign exception messages and do not demonstrate sensitive-data disclosure.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Consider a separate exception-detail redaction policy that preserves error type and status while limiting sensitive exception text. Validate it against representative Watsonx failures before treating exception messages as safe for unrestricted telemetry capture.

async achat(messages, params=None, tools=None, tool_choice=None, tool_choice_option=None, context=None, crypto=None)[source]¶

Given a list of messages comprising a conversation with a chat model in an asynchronous manner.

Parameters:

  * messages (list[dict]) – The messages for this chat session.

  * params (dict, TextChatParameters, optional) – meta props for chat generation, use `ibm_watsonx_ai.foundation_models.schema.TextChatParameters.show()`

Generates a completion text as generated_text after getting a text prompt as input and parameters for the selected model (model_id) or deployment (deployment_id). For prompt template deployment, prompt should be None.

Parameters:

  * params (dict, TextGenParameters, optional) – MetaProps for text generation, use `ibm_watsonx_ai.metanames.GenTextParamsMetaNames().show()` to view the list of MetaNames

  * concurrency_limit (int) – number of requests to be sent in parallel, max is 10

  * prompt ((str | list | None), optional) – prompt string or list of strings. If list of strings is passed, requests will be managed in parallel with the rate of concurency_limit, defaults to None

  * guardrails (bool) – If True, the detection filter for potentially hateful, abusive, and/or profane language (HAP) is toggle on for both prompt and generated text, defaults to False

  * guardrails_hap_params (dict) – MetaProps for HAP moderations, use `ibm_watsonx_ai.metanames.GenTextModerationsMetaNames().show()` to view the list of MetaNames

# `ModelInference` for Deployments¶

This section shows how to use the ModelInference module with a created deployment.

You can infer text in one of two ways:

  * the deployments module

  * the ModelInference module

## Infer text with deployments¶

You can directly query `generate_text` using the deployments module.

    client.deployments.generate_text(
        prompt="Example prompt",
        deployment_id=deployment_id)

## Creating `ModelInference` instance¶

Start by defining the parameters. They will later be used by the module.

    from ibm_watsonx_ai.metanames import GenTextParamsMetaNames as GenParams

    generate_params = {
        GenParams.MAX_NEW_TOKENS: 25,
        GenParams.STOP_SEQUENCES: ["\n"]
    }

Create the ModelInference by using credentials and `project_id` / `space_id`, or the previously initialized APIClient (see APIClient initialization).

# `ModelInference` for Deployments#

This section shows how to use ModelInference module with created deployment.

There are two ways to infer text using the deployments module or using ModelInference module .

## Infer text with deployments#

You can directly query `generate_text` using the deployments module.

    client.deployments.generate_text(
        prompt="Example prompt",
        deployment_id=deployment_id)

## Creating `ModelInference` instance#

At the beginning, it is recommended to define parameters (later used by module).

    from ibm_watson_machine_learning.metanames import GenTextParamsMetaNames as GenParams

    generate_params = {
        GenParams.MAX_NEW_TOKENS: 25,
        GenParams.STOP_SEQUENCES: ["\n"]
    }

Create the ModelInference itself, using credentials and `project_id` / `space_id` or the previously initialized APIClient (see APIClient initialization).

    from ibm_watson_machine_learning.foundation_models import ModelInference

    deployed_model = ModelInference(
        deployment_id=deployment_id,
        params=generate_params,
        credentials=credentials,
        project_id=project_id
    )

    # OR

    deployed_model = ModelInference(
        deployment_id=deployment_id,
        params=generate_params,
        api_client=client
    )

You can directly query `generate_text` using the `ModelInference` object.

    deployed_model.generate_text(prompt="Example prompt")

## Generate methods#

The detailed explanation of available generate methods with exact parameters can be found in the ModelInferece class.

With previously created `deployed_model` object, it is possible to generate a text stream (generator) using defined inference and `generate_text_stream()` method.

    for token in deployed_model.generate_text_stream(prompt=input_prompt):
        print(token, end="")
    '$10 Powerchill Leggings'

And also receive more detailed result with `generate()`.

    details = deployed_model.generate(prompt=input_prompt, params=gen_params)
    print(details)
    {
        'model_id': 'google/flan-t5-xl',
        'created_at': '2023-11-17T15:32:57.401Z',
        'results': [
            {
            'generated_text': '$10 Powerchill Leggings',
            'generated_token_count': 8,
            'input_token_count': 73,
            'stop_reason': 'eos_token'
            }
        ],
        'system': {'warnings': []}

Handle supported Watsonx parameter objects.

ibm_watsonx_ai.ModelInference accepts TextGenParameters and TextChatParameters. These dataclass objects do not provide .get(...). After this change, _handle_input reaches set_model_input_attributes, where the call raises. @dont_throw suppresses the exception and prevents prompt and event attributes from being recorded.

use it for every model parameter passed to _set_span_attribute, preserving the
existing attribute mappings and defaults.
