What

_build_from_streaming_response (the generator returned by replicate.stream / run with a streaming response) only calls span.end() after the stream has been consumed to the end. If the stream raises part-way (dropped connection, timeout) or the caller stops iterating and closes the generator, the span is never ended, so it is never exported and the failure does not show up in traces.

Change

Wrap the loop and the response handling in try/finally: if the stream raises, record the exception and set the ERROR status; the span is always ended in finally. The success path is unchanged: the response attributes and OK status are still set before the span ends.

Tests

New tests/test_stream_span.py: a stream that raises ConnectionError after one event, and a stream closed after one event. Both must leave one finished replicate.stream span, and the failing stream must carry the ERROR status and the exception event. Both fail on main and pass with the change.

packages/opentelemetry-instrumentation-replicate tests: 11 passed. ruff check clean. Run with uv sync --frozen --group test --group dev in the package and .venv/bin/python -m pytest tests -p no:sugar.

This PR was made with Claude Code (Anthropic); the tests above were run on main and on this branch.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Streaming requests now properly record failures, mark spans as errors, and complete span tracking when streams fail.
    • Span tracking is also completed when a streaming response is abandoned or closed early.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for failed and abandoned streaming responses.

…bandoned

_build_from_streaming_response only called span.end() after the stream had
been consumed to the end. If the stream raised mid-way (dropped connection,
timeout) or the caller stopped iterating and closed it, the span was never
ended, so it was never exported and the failure was invisible in traces.

Wrap the loop and the response handling in try/finally. When the stream
raises, record the exception and set the ERROR status; the span is always
ended in the finally block.

Test: a stream that raises after one event must leave one finished span with
the ERROR status and the exception event, and a stream closed after one
event must leave one finished span (both failed before the change).

📝 Walkthrough

The Replicate streaming response handler now records iteration errors, sets the span status to ERROR, re-raises the error, and ends the span in a finally block. Tests cover failures and stream abandonment.

The handler records iteration errors, sets the span status to ERROR, re-raises errors, and ends the span in a finally block. Tests check error propagation, exception recording, and span completion after failure or abandonment.

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 2059b

Streams closed before their first item can still leave unfinished tracing spans. This narrow gap should be fixed or explicitly accepted before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 2059b

The change is narrow and improves trace completion without changing request authorization or caller-visible error propagation. Error details now become trace data; their sensitivity and downstream filtering are not established.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The supported exposure change is additional error data on recorded Replicate streaming spans. No wider tenant, service, environment, credential, or data-store authority expansion is demonstrated; downstream telemetry readership and filtering are unknown.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The tests demonstrate a fixed ConnectionError reaching span telemetry, not confidential production content or an attacker-controlled disclosure path. The documented Replicate content opt-out names prompts, completions, and embeddings; its applicability to exception details is not established.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define whether error details belong to the content-capture policy. If they may contain protected content, retain error classification while redacting or gating exception text and status descriptions. This is a conditional hardening proposal, not a verified disclosure finding.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

End the span when the stream closes before its first item.

If a caller closes the generator returned by _wrap without calling next, Python never enters this try/finally. _wrap has already started the span, so the span remains unfinished. Give the returned stream a close() path that ends the span even when iteration has not started, and test that case.
