📝 Walkthrough

This change adds a command-line Aleph Alpha tracing demo. It supports live requests and a canned offline adapter. The demo captures instrumented spans in memory, tests the trace data, and prints the completion result and trace hierarchy.

Changes: Aleph Alpha tracing demo

Layer / File(s) Summary
Tracing setup and request
packages/sample-app/pyproject.toml, packages/sample-app/sample_app/alephalpha_tracing_demo.py, packages/sample-app/tests/test_alephalpha_tracing_demo.py
Adds Aleph Alpha and OpenTelemetry dependencies. Configures in-memory span capture and client instrumentation. Wraps completion requests in an application span and validates nested span metadata, token data, trace data, and answer length.
Client selection and CLI execution
packages/sample-app/sample_app/alephalpha_tracing_demo.py
Adds a canned offline adapter. Selects offline mode when requested or when AA_TOKEN is absent. Adds options for the question, model, host, offline mode, and raw span output.
Span hierarchy output
packages/sample-app/sample_app/alephalpha_tracing_demo.py
Groups captured spans by parent and prints timing, status, attributes, trace identifiers, and the completion result. Adds the executable entry point.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to c9e46

The demo lets a user point live mode at a non-HTTPS host, which would send their API token unencrypted. The default is safe and this is a sample app, so it is mergeable once a scheme check is added or the risk is accepted.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to c9e46

The live demo can send an API credential to a user-selected host without restricting the destination. Exploitation requires influencing the host configuration of a run that has a real token. Offline mode uses a dummy token, and the default destination is the official HTTPS API, limiting the exposure compared with a remotely accessible service.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · observed: The new live flow binds AA_TOKEN to an unrestricted --host destination. Someone able to influence that configuration can cause a token-bearing completion request to target an attacker-controlled authority; the demo does not enforce an approved host or HTTPS scheme.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The credential exposure is bounded by the AA_TOKEN available to the invoking process and its granted API authority. An attacker must influence the live destination configuration. The supplied evidence does not establish broader tenant, infrastructure, or deployment privileges, and does not demonstrate an unauthenticated incoming network attack surface.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The retained finding traces caller-selected --host through make_client to a client carrying AA_TOKEN, followed by complete. Supplied static verification reports that the client sends bearer authentication to the configured host. This caller and credential-binding path is introduced by the new demo, although the dependency's transport behavior is not new.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The default host is the official HTTPS endpoint. Missing AA_TOKEN or explicit --offline selects a dummy-token client with fake adapters for both HTTP schemes. Those controls protect offline execution but do not constrain the destination when a real token activates live mode; live mode is selected automatically when that environment variable is present.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Tracing setup registers process-global instrumentation and retains finished spans without explicit demo teardown. Tests explicitly uninstrument after use. The unchanged client wrapper ends its span only on the normal return path, so completion failures can leave incomplete trace evidence. These are lifecycle limitations, not proof of additional credential exposure; persistence beyond the intended CLI run would require a reused host process.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Bind live credentials to explicitly approved HTTPS authorities before constructing the client. If custom endpoints are required, make their credential association explicit rather than silently reusing AA_TOKEN for any host.

Add a beginner-friendly sample that traces an Aleph Alpha completion with
OpenTelemetry, including an offline mode backed by a fake HTTP adapter so
it runs without an API key. Add aleph-alpha-client and the alephalpha
instrumentation to the sample-app dependencies, plus an offline test that
checks the completion span is nested under the app span with model and
token-usage attributes.

## 9.0.0

  * Remove deprecated QA and Summarization functionality
  * Remove references to luminous-extended model

## 8.1.0

### Python support

  * Minimal supported Python version is now 3.9

## 8.0.0

  * Remove default value for `host` parameter in `Client` and `AsyncClient`. Passing a value for the `host` is now required.

## 7.6.0

  * Add `instructable_embed` to `Client` and `AsyncClient`

## 7.5.1

  * Add fallback mechanism for figuring out the version locally.

## 7.5.0

  * Add support for chat endpoint to `Client` and `AsyncClient`

## 7.4.0

  * Add `complete_with_streaming` to `AsyncClient` to support completion endpoint with streaming

## 7.3.0

  * Maximum token attribute of `CompletionRequest` defaults to None

## 7.2.0

### Python support

  * Minimal supported Python version is now 3.8
  * Dependency `aiohttp` is specified to be at least of version `3.10`.

## 7.1.0

  * Introduce support for internal feature 'tags'
  * Export BusyError

## 7.0.1

  * Fixed a bug in pydoc for Prompt and Token

## 7.0.0

  * Added `num_tokens_prompt_total` to `EvaluationResponse`
  * HTTP API version 1.16.0 or higher is required.

## 6.0.0

  * Added `num_tokens_prompt_total` to the types below. This is a breaking change since `num_tokens_prompt_total` is mandatory.
    * `EmbeddingResponse`
    * `SemanticEmbeddingResponse`
    * `BatchSemanticEmbeddingResponse`
  * HTTP API version 1.15.0 or higher is required.

## 5.0.0

  * Added `num_tokens_prompt_total` and `num_tokens_generated` to `CompletionResponse`. This is a breaking change as these were introduced as mandatory parameters rather than optional ones.
  * HTTP API version 1.14.0 or higher is required.

## 4.1.0

  * Added `verify_ssl` flag, so you can disable SSL checking for your sessions.

## 4.0.0

  * Turned all NamedTuples into Dataclasses. Even if this is technically a breaking change probably not much source code is actually affected as constructing instances still behaves the same.

## 3.1.0

### Features

### New `.explain()` method 🎉

Better understand the source of a completion, specifically on how much each section of a prompt impacts the completion.

To get started, you can simply pass in a prompt you used with a model and the completion the model gave and generate an explanation:

    from aleph_alpha_client import Client, CompletionRequest, ExplanationRequest, Prompt

    client = Client(token=os.environ["AA_TOKEN"])
    prompt = Prompt.from_text("An apple a day, ")
    model_name = "luminous-extended"

    # create a completion request
    request = CompletionRequest(prompt=prompt, maximum_tokens=32)
    response = client.complete(request, model=model_name)

    # generate an explanation
    request = ExplanationRequest(prompt=prompt, target=response.completions[0].completion)
    response = client.explain(request, model=model_name)

To visually see the results, you can also use this in our Playground.

We also have more documentation and examples available for you to read.

Bases: `object`

Construct a context object for asynchronous requests given a user token

Parameters:

token (string, required):

The API token that will be used for authentication.

host (string, required):

The hostname of the API host.

hosting(string, optional, default None):

Determines in which datacenters the request may be processed. You can either set the parameter to “aleph-alpha” or omit it (defaulting to None).

Not setting this value, or setting it to None, gives us maximal flexibility in processing your request in our own datacenters and on servers hosted with other providers. Choose this option for maximal availability.

Setting it to “aleph-alpha” allows us to only process the request in our own datacenters. </excerpt>

Reject non-HTTPS hosts in live mode.

When AA_TOKEN is set, make_client passes --host and the token to the live client. Aleph Alpha client 7.1.0 sends the token as a bearer Authorization header. An on-path observer can read it when the host uses HTTP.

Update make_client to reject any non-HTTPS host before creating the live client
