Summary

_transport_wrapper detects whether a transport yields two streams or three by unpacking the returned tuple inside a try that also contains the yield. When code using the transport raises, the exception is thrown back in at the yield and caught by those except clauses, which then yield result a second time. contextlib does not allow that, so the caller receives

RuntimeError: generator didn't stop after athrow()

instead of the original failure. This affects every exception raised inside an MCP client session using SSE, stdio, or streamable HTTP, and hides the error that would explain a failed connection.

The wrapper now wraps the streams before yielding and keeps the shape check/fallback outside the code that runs while the caller owns the context. Failures from the caller pass through unchanged. The fallback for an unexpected result is preserved: the raw result is yielded with the same warning when it cannot be wrapped.

Tests

Added tests/test_transport_wrapper.py:

  • both tuple shapes (two streams, and three with a session-id callback) still yield instrumented reader/writer objects;
  • an application ValueError raised inside the wrapped transport context reaches the caller as the same exception object. Both assertions fail on the base commit (RuntimeError: generator didn't stop after athrow()) and pass with the change.

Validation in the package's locked environment (uv sync --frozen --all-groups, Python 3.12):

  • pytest tests -> 53 passed.
  • ruff check on both changed files -> clean.

Checklist

  • I have added tests that cover my changes.
  • If adding a new instrumentation or changing an existing one, I've added screenshots from some observability platform showing the change.
  • PR name follows conventional commits format: feat(instrumentation): ... or fix(instrumentation): ....
  • (If applicable) I have updated the documentation accordingly.

The emitted spans do not change, so there is no observability screenshot for this one: the fix is that the caller's own exception is no longer replaced, as covered by the tests above.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved handling of transport results with two- or three-part responses.
    • Preserved application exceptions without replacing them with unrelated transport errors.
    • Returned original transport results when stream processing fails, while logging a warning.
    • Improved compatibility with unsupported or malformed transport results through safe passthrough behavior.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for exception propagation and instrumentation across supported transport response shapes.
    • Added verification that original results and exceptions remain unchanged in fallback scenarios.

📝 Walkthrough

The MCP transport wrapper now supports two- and three-element results, instruments the first two streams, preserves an optional third value, passes through unsupported results, and preserves exceptions raised by transport consumers.

Checked this out locally in the package's locked env. tests/test_transport_wrapper.py passes on this head (4 tests), and with the instrumentation file swapped back to main the two 'application exception reaches the caller' cases fail with the RuntimeError described here. I also tried a few extra cases against the new wrapper: KeyboardInterrupt and CancelledError raised inside the block, and a transport that yields a non-tuple or a one-element tuple. All of them behave (the raw result is yielded and a ValueError inside still reaches the caller), so the shape fallback looks right. It isn't covered by a test in this PR, so a small test for it might be worth adding. I didn't run the full package suite or a real MCP client.

Thanks for checking this against the locked env and for trying the extra shapes. Added 6f1f49c: a parametrized test for a transport that yields a non-tuple (_Stream()) and a one-element tuple. It asserts the wrapper yields the raw result unchanged and that a ValueError raised by the caller still reaches them, so the fallback stays inside the yield rather than turning into a second one.

Local on 6f1f49c: pytest tests/test_transport_wrapper.py -q → 6 passed; ruff check clean. I also did not run the full package suite or a live MCP client.

Preserve transport results with more than three elements.

When a transport yields four elements, read_stream, write_stream, *rest = result succeeds, and *rest[:1] drops the fourth element. Reject results with more than three elements so the raw-result fallback returns the original result. Add a four-element case to test_unknown_transport_shapes_fall_back_to_the_raw_result.

Good catch — a result with more than three elements was being partially instrumented instead of falling back, because the extra elements were kept after wrapping the first two. Fixed in 8d48866: the wrapper now rejects more than one extra element so the raw result is returned untouched, and the fallback test includes a four-element tuple. The assertion is now identity (is), because wrapt proxies compare equal to their wrapped stream and equality could not prove the raw value survived.

Local on 8d48866: pytest tests/test_transport_wrapper.py -q → 7 passed; ruff check clean. The four-element case is red if the arity check is removed.
