For Nova models, invoke_model_with_response_stream sends Converse-style events (contentBlockStart, contentBlockDelta, messageStop, metadata). StreamingWrapper._accumulate_events only handles text deltas, so a streamed Nova response loses two things on the span:

  • Tool calls.
    • A contentBlockDelta with toolUse makes outputText None and then raises TypeError on None += str. @dont_throw swallows that.
    • contentBlockStart is stored raw and never read.
    • The span ends up with gen_ai.output.messages = [{"role": "assistant", "parts": [{"type": "text", "content": null}], "finish_reason": ""}] for a response that was a single get_weather call.
  • Finish reason. messageStop is stored as stop_reason, but the amazon branches in span_utils.py read only Titan's completionReason. So gen_ai.response.finish_reasons is unset and the output message has finish_reason: "" for every streamed Nova response, text or tool.

Token usage was already right (read from metadata.usage). Non-streamed Nova invoke_model goes through the "output" branch and isn't affected.

No issue exists for this. It's separate from #4560, which covers Anthropic input_json_delta in _process_event in the same file.

Changes

  • streaming_wrapper.py (sync and async _accumulate_events): collect toolUse blocks from contentBlockStart and append their input deltas. Text deltas are accumulated as before. This mirrors what the converse_stream handler in __init__.py already does.
  • span_utils.py:
    • The streamed amazon body now emits a text part (when there is text) plus one tool_call part per block.
    • Finish reasons fall back to stop_reason when completionReason is absent.
    • The streamed tool-call part conversion moved into _streamed_tool_call_part, which is now shared with set_converse_streaming_response_span_attributes.

Tests

  • test_nova_invoke_stream_tool_use (new, with cassette). It's a real amazon.nova-lite-v1:0 stream with a get_weather tool: 43 content blocks (the <thinking> text, one token per block, then the toolUse), stopReason: tool_use. It asserts the text part, the tool_call part with parsed arguments, and finish reason tool_call.
  • test_nova_invoke_stream: now also asserts finish reason stop. Its existing cassette already ends with messageStop: end_turn.
  • test_aioboto3_invoke_stream_tool_use (new): the same check for the async wrapper, using a mocked stream like the rest of test_aioboto3.py.
$ cd packages/opentelemetry-instrumentation-bedrock && pytest tests -q    # this branch
386 passed
# base 94d3f04: 384 passed. Source files reverted, new tests kept: 3 failed, 16 passed (-k "tool_use or test_nova_invoke_stream")
#   test_nova_invoke_stream_tool_use: assert '' == 'tool_call'
#   test_nova_invoke_stream: assert '' == 'stop'
# test_aioboto3_invoke_stream_tool_use: parts [{'type': 'text', 'content': None}], finish_reason ''
# (expected a get_weather tool_call part and 'tool_call')
$ ruff check .
All checks passed!

The new cassette's only interaction is the invoke-with-response-stream call. It has no Authorization or signature headers (the request used a Bedrock API key, and authorization is in filter_headers).

  • I have added tests that cover my changes.
  • If adding a new instrumentation or changing an existing one, I've added screenshots from some observability platform showing the change. (No screenshot; the before/after span attributes are above.)
  • PR name follows conventional commits format: feat(instrumentation): ... or fix(instrumentation): ....
  • (If applicable) I have updated the documentation accordingly. (Not applicable.)

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Amazon Bedrock streaming responses now capture tool-use requests, including tool names and arguments, alongside response text.
    • Tool arguments are parsed when possible; original input is preserved when parsing fails.
    • Streamed response details now include finish reasons and token usage, with improved support for alternate response formats and completion-reason fields.

…ke_model

For Nova, invoke_model_with_response_stream sends Converse-style events.
StreamingWrapper._accumulate_events only read contentBlockDelta text, so:

- a toolUse delta turned outputText into None and raised a TypeError that
@dont_throw swallowed, and contentBlockStart toolUse blocks were stored raw
and never reached the span. A streamed tool call showed up as a text part
  with null content.
- messageStop is stored as stop_reason, but the amazon span code only read
Titan's completionReason, so finish reasons were empty for every streamed
  Nova response.

Accumulate toolUse blocks (start + input deltas) in both the sync and async
wrappers, emit them as tool_call parts, and fall back to stop_reason for the
finish reason. The tool-call part conversion is shared with the Converse
streaming path.

📝 Walkthrough

Bedrock streaming instrumentation now accumulates tool-use input alongside text and converts tool blocks into assistant tool-call output in spans. Tests cover Nova streaming responses and legacy aioboto3 instrumentation.

Changes: Bedrock streaming tool-use tracing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Accumulate streamed tool-use events
packages/opentelemetry-instrumentation-bedrock/opentelemetry/instrumentation/bedrock/streaming_wrapper.py
Synchronous and asynchronous event accumulation now creates tool blocks from tool-use starts and appends input deltas to the latest tool block. Text deltas continue to accumulate in outputText.
Convert streamed output into span data
packages/opentelemetry-instrumentation-bedrock/opentelemetry/instrumentation/bedrock/span_utils.py, packages/opentelemetry-instrumentation-bedrock/tests/traces/cassettes/test_nova/*, packages/opentelemetry-instrumentation-bedrock/tests/traces/test_aioboto3.py, packages/opentelemetry-instrumentation-bedrock/tests/traces/test_nova.py
Amazon response mapping now accepts tool blocks, falls back from completionReason to stop_reason, and parses streamed tool inputs as JSON when possible. Tests check tool-call output, finish reasons, and token usage.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to e54cd

Mixed text and tool-call traces may show the wrong content order. This is a bounded tracing limitation that can be followed up separately.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to e0166

Newly captured tool arguments can appear in diagnostic logs even when content tracing is disabled. Exposure requires debug logging to be enabled and collected; normal response-content export remains protected by the existing setting.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · observed: Synchronous streaming can disclose newly accumulated tool arguments through debug logs even with TRACELOOP_TRACE_CONTENT=false and no content-tracing override. The logger prints the accumulator before each event, so events following an input delta expose previously accumulated arguments. The logging statement predates this PR, but its tool-argument exposure is newly introduced. Actual disclosure requires DEBUG logging and collection of these records.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The diagnostic-log exposure covers accumulated tool arguments processed by synchronous wrappers in a DEBUG-enabled process. Confidentiality impact depends on argument sensitivity, log collection, and reader access. The asynchronous accumulator has no corresponding debug statement, and the inspected path does not execute tools or grant additional authority.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — Tool-use input arrives in provider response chunks, is decoded and appended to tool_blocks, and is included in the next synchronous accumulator debug record. This route does not consult the content-tracing setting or require a recording span. The base retained neither these input deltas nor their accumulated arguments, although it already logged text and other accumulator fields.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The strongest counterevidence is that disabling content tracing still prevents tool arguments from entering response-message span attributes. The inspected response-event emitter also does not serialize tool_blocks. The identified control gap is the separate synchronous diagnostic-log sink, not the normal gated span-output path.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Each wrapper initializes its own accumulator. Async iteration guards completion against duplicate callbacks and uses finally; synchronous completion occurs on iterator exhaustion. These existing lifecycle differences do not establish cross-stream leakage or additional tool authority, but interrupted and repeated tool-use sequences remain incompletely covered.

Preserve content-block order when accumulating tool calls.

If Nova emits text between two tool calls, both accumulators retain the tool calls in tool_blocks but merge all text into outputText. The Amazon span mapper then places that merged text before both tool calls. The exported message no longer represents the response order. Retain ordered content blocks, using contentBlockIndex to associate deltas with their blocks, and emit parts in that order. AWS documents multiple tool calls and content-block indices. This follows the Converse streaming path, which already emits the joined text before the tool calls (set_converse_streaming_response_span_attributes). Keeping each block in stream order would change both paths, so I would rather do it in a separate PR if you want it.

@pcbeingused333 Thanks for clarifying. This matches the existing set_converse_streaming_response_span_attributes behavior, so I agree that preserving content-block order belongs in a separate PR covering both paths. The ordering concern remains valid, but it should not block this fix.

Would you like me to open a follow-up issue?

Learning: In packages/opentelemetry-instrumentation-bedrock/opentelemetry/instrumentation/bedrock/span_utils.py, set_converse_streaming_response_span_attributes emits joined text before tool calls. The Nova invoke_model streaming path follows this existing convention. Changes to preserve content-block order should cover both paths consistently.
