What and why

Stack: #2327 -> #2329 -> this PR. Base: refactor/zk-request-execution; review/merge in order and retarget each child to main after its parent lands. Refs #2321 (implementation completion across the stack; do not close before qualification/merge).

  • Give TrBFVRequest its own synchronous execute, diagnostic operation_name, and typed failure boundary in trbfv. It delegates to the existing five calculations, preserves caller-owned RNG/cipher behavior and recovers the same poisoned RNG state rather than reseeding.
  • Remove native calculation dispatch and duplicated failure-variant mapping from multithread. The runtime retains resource admission, replay, retry/deadline policy, cancellation, timing, correlation wrapping and bus publication. It now contains neither circuit-specific execution nor threshold calculations.
  • Keep deterministic witness preparation in zk/witness, ZK execution in zk/prover, and protocol-free executor primitives in task-pool. No generic job framework, new pool or transport type is introduced.
  • Update the READMEs/blueprint to describe current ownership rather than leave a future-move paragraph.

Verification

Rust commands use E3_ZK_PROVER_SKIP_FIXTURE_BUILD=1, debug information disabled, four build jobs and the shared local build cache. The fixture flag avoids incidental artifact generation, not proof verification requirements.

  • cargo test --locked --offline -p e3-trbfv -p e3-multithread: 39 passed (32 dispatcher/gate, 6 native unit, 1 real native threshold-BFV integration), doc targets passed.
  • The existing five-party/threshold-two integration now uses the typed execution API for decryption shares and reconstruction and still checks every plaintext tally against independently summed inputs, including non-prefix party order.
  • New coverage exercises poisoned caller RNG recovery through generation, encrypted output access, structured party attribution, and exact encrypted native-result reuse for regenerated correlations with no worker redispatch. The replay fixture is intentionally opaque, not a statement-validity test.
  • cargo test --locked --offline -p e3-task-pool -p e3-trbfv -p e3-multithread -p e3-zk-prover -p e3-ciphernode-builder --lib: 251 reported passes, 2 ignored. As in the parent, the artifact-dependent C0 test returns early without matching compiled artifacts; it is not crypto evidence.
  • cargo clippy --locked --offline --no-deps -p e3-trbfv -p e3-multithread -p e3-zk-prover --lib -- -D warnings: passed.
  • cargo test --locked --offline -p e3-tests --test large_work_plan_recovery: 1 passed at the final stack head.
  • All five native operation labels were checked unchanged against the previous dispatcher. No native calculation implementation or serialized type definition changes.
  • Blueprint/navigation, repository configuration, documentation links and normal commit/push hooks are retained. The fire-and-forget ceiling remains unchanged.

Limits: matching local C0/C7/UDE proof artifacts are unavailable for prepared proof acceptance; ignored/self-skipping tests are not counted as cryptographic verification. Full-node/real-proof CI at the final stack head remains an acceptance gate. The previously recorded broad strict-Clippy findings in untouched zk/config are not suppressed or repaired in this ownership change.

The main CI workflow filters pull requests to main/dev. After the parent lands, retarget/rebase this child onto main and push the synchronized head to run full CI (or use a separately requested explicit workflow dispatch). A base-only retarget is not sufficient to rely on the workflow's default PR event types. No full manual circuit/proof campaign was launched, and #2321 remains open until qualification and merge.

Compatibility

Read-only self-review references: DKG, threshold decryption, persistence/replay, protocol compatibility.

The new native methods are additive. Existing calculations and serialized request/result/error definitions are unchanged, as are N/H/T meaning, party indexing/order, RNG lock scope for randomized operations, successful encrypted contributions, proof/witness shape, hash/signature bytes, durable/wire formats and deployed verifiers. Coarse native timing now measures the owned calculation before the runtime wraps its result envelope; labels and aggregate reporting remain unchanged.

No schema, wire-major, protocol/node-generation counter or artifact regeneration/restamping is proposed. The proposed rollout is a normal rolling binary upgrade without a data migration; rollback retains the prior binary and unchanged data/artifacts, subject to human review and CI qualification. No publication, deployment or merge is authorized by this PR.

The parent's source-level constructor changes remain documented in #2327. The stack does not claim transactional effect completion, exactly-once execution or preemption of running native closures; #2265 remains a separate design/evidence project.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements

    • Improved synchronous processing of TrBFV operations with clearer operation-specific errors and preserved failure details.
    • Added recovery when random-number generation resources are unavailable or interrupted.
    • Improved replay behavior so regenerated requests consistently reuse encrypted responses without unnecessary worker activity.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for replayed native responses, encrypted outputs, generated share material, and structured error reporting.
  • Documentation

    • Clarified execution responsibilities, setup requirements, supported operations, and failure handling.

📝 Walkthrough

TrBFV request execution now uses a synchronous typed API. The multithread dispatcher delegates to this API and wraps its results. Tests cover RNG recovery, structured failures, integration operations, and replayed encrypted responses. Workspace and documentation metadata were also updated.

Changes: TrBFV execution boundary

Layer / File(s) Summary
Typed request execution and validation
crates/trbfv/src/request_execution.rs, crates/trbfv/src/lib.rs, crates/trbfv/tests/integration.rs, crates/trbfv/README.md
TrBFVRequest exposes operation labels, structured failure conversion, and synchronous dispatch. Randomized operations lock the shared RNG, and execution recovers poisoned locks. Tests cover execution, failures, and response variants.
Dispatcher delegation and replay coverage
crates/multithread/src/multithread.rs, crates/multithread/src/effect_gate.rs, crates/multithread/README.md, scripts/blueprint/facts/02-clients-compute.json, scripts/blueprint/refs/B-ciphernode.json
The dispatcher delegates TrBFV execution and failure conversion, then wraps results with request metadata and duration. Replay coverage verifies reuse of encrypted response bytes. Documentation and blueprint references describe the updated boundary.

Update the two stale blueprint statements.

handle_trbfv_request no longer exists. handle_compute_request calls TrBFVRequest::execute, so the current statement can misdirect readers.

test_trbfv_isolation is declared on line 28, not line 30. Update the embedded line number.

Refs #2321. Keep native dispatch, RNG access and typed failures with threshold calculations; leave replay, admission, retry policy and event correlation in the runtime.
Address cosmetic nits from the independent review of #2327 on the final stack layer; preserve the reviewed 720344b implementation.
