## [Unreleased]

## [0.20.0-beta.5] — 2026-10-21

### Security

- Ship the audited dependency pins from the current source tree, including
certifi 2026.10.19 (fixes PYSEC-2026-4320 / GHSA-6q48-6c7w-9gw2).
- Update pypdf to 6.21.2 with hashed packages, including the stream/tree denial-of-
service fixes and bounded cross-reference work. No unrelated dependency upgrades.
- Refuse existing proof-export destinations, including hardlinks and symlinks;
newly created receipts are private (0600) and never overwrite operator state.
- Preserve the no-replay execution latch, bounded conversation memory and
per-request approval binding from the execution-reliability update.

### Added

- A Homebrew-managed profile layout separates versioned code from private operator
state. Package replacement and rollback retain identities, projects and events;
self-update refuses managed installations. The own-tap formula is limited to
Apple Silicon on macOS 14+ and installs only hash-locked offline wheels.
- Four bundled missions: repository guardian, folder dossier, mailbox brief with
local drafts, and server health watcher. Missions are validated prompt templates,
not executable plugins or blanket approval; every proposed tool call remains gated.
- Named projects and `/continue`, with durable context scoped to the initiating
principal and conversation. Project selection grants no filesystem permission.
- Read-only mailbox listing and reading using IMAP read-only selection and BODY.PEEK.
These tools cannot send, delete, move, flag or mark messages read.
- `talos proof` summarizes recorded outcomes without copying prompts, arguments or
result bodies. `talos local-check` probes only loopback model endpoints without
submitting user content and refuses redirects; it is not a global privacy audit.

### Fixed

- Recover stale sandbox identity cache after ownership changes. Treat uncertain
Telegram delivery as ambiguous rather than automatically resending a possible
duplicate; a missing acknowledgement is not proof that delivery failed.
- Stop repeated `delegate_status` polling after three identical pending results. The
completion watcher still delivers the final worker result separately, while the
bounded turn now names the paused job instead of spending its remaining step budget.

# Homebrew (Apple Silicon, macOS 14+)

Talos's own tap packages the beta CLI, not a notarized desktop application or a
Homebrew/core formula. Intel Macs and Linux are not supported by this formula;
use the signed installer for the other supported environments.

```sh
brew install talos-kernel/tap/talos
talos setup terminal
talos chat
```

The source archive is pinned by SHA256. Homebrew fetches individually pinned original
wheel files from PyPI, then installs these staged files offline. Each wheel is checked
against the hashed lock in the release. Fetching the files still requires the network.
Installing the formula does not configure identities, start Talos or enable services.
Third-party dependencies retain their own licenses; the tap does not redistribute a
combined wheel bundle or a prebuilt Talos bottle. The repository's bundle-based formula
renderer is a packaging helper, not the published tap's resource manifest.

## Code and private state are separate

Homebrew owns the code in its versioned Cellar. The invoking user's private state is
`~/.talos/homebrew`: configuration, identity files, event log, selected model, projects,
workspace and local vault. The profile and its data/workspace directories are 0700;
new identity/configuration files are 0600. A shared or symlinked profile is refused,
not silently repaired. Other Talos installations are not imported automatically.

Diagnostic commands do not create a new profile. Explicit setup writes configuration;
starting the agent seeds only missing identity templates. Existing operator files are
preserved. Advanced operators may set an absolute `TALOS_PROFILE_DIR` in the launching
environment; this is policy, not a model-editable setting.

## Upgrade, removal and recovery

Stop any running Talos process, keep a private backup of the profile, then:

```sh
brew update
brew upgrade talos-kernel/tap/talos
```

The built-in `talos update` refuses a Homebrew-managed installation, even with a
different `--prefix`: one package manager owns code replacement. Removing the formula
with `brew uninstall talos-kernel/tap/talos` leaves the profile intact.

Switching code versions does not restore or erase user data. It is not a database
downgrade mechanism: check version-specific migration compatibility before running an
older release against newer state. Never overwrite new events with an old backup just
to roll back code.

# Missions, projects and outcome receipts

Missions turn common tasks into repeatable briefs. They do not grant permissions:
the model proposes each action and the existing kernel still rules on it. A mission's
checks are instructions to the reasoner, not a new independent verification engine.

In an authorized chat, select an existing folder and inspect a mission before running it:

```text
/project add demo /path/to/project Keep unrelated work unchanged
/missions
/mission info folder-dossier
/mission run folder-dossier source=. output=talos-reports/dossier.md
/project context Verify the remaining source references next
/continue
```

Relative mission paths must remain inside the selected project. The project is context,
not an allowlist: selecting a protected folder does not make its contents accessible.
Projects and selection are scoped to the initiating principal and conversation. Removing
a project removes its context entry, not the underlying folder.

## Bundled tasks

| Mission | Result | Boundary |
|---|---|---|
| `repo-guardian` | Small change, executed tests and review handover | No push or merge is requested; normal execution gates still apply |
| `folder-dossier` | Source-linked findings and open questions | Source files are to remain unchanged |
| `mail-brief` | Prioritized brief and local reply drafts | Mailbox tools are read-only; no mail is sent by them |
| `server-watcher` | Measured health exceptions and recommendations | Requires an operator-configured remote alias and normal remote-exec approval |

Mailbox and remote access require existing operator configuration; missions do not
create credentials, add allowed hosts or enable tools automatically. A mission prompt
is not a hard sandbox for all other tools: security enforcement stays with the kernel.

## Receipts and local-model check

```sh
talos proof --format json
talos proof --run RUN_ID --out new-receipt.md
talos local-check --help
```

Proof summaries read the event log and exclude prompts, tool arguments, result bodies
and model answers. Artifact paths can still be sensitive: inspect a receipt before
sharing it. A successful recorded write is historical evidence, not proof that a file
has remained unchanged. Existing export destinations are refused, not overwritten.

The local-model check sends no user content. It tests loopback reachability and refuses
redirects; it cannot prove that a model server or any other process never uses the network.
