Make the Mercurial 3 integration test leg actually use Mercurial 3 - #2793
Conversation
Since the move to central package management both branches of the MercurialVersion switch in Testing.csproj resolved the central versions, so MercurialVersion=3 tested Mercurial 6. Pin SIL.Chorus.Mercurial 3.0.3.11 with VersionOverride; LibChorus stays central because the old hg 3 pin (6.0.0-beta0041) needs SIL.Core 12 and LfMergeBridge and ChorusMerge require a newer LibChorus. The integration-test workflow also lost the setting: dotnet test restores and builds again without MercurialVersion, so it switched Testing back to Mercurial 6, and on windows-latest $MERCURIAL_VERSION is not an env var in pwsh, so the build step never saw 3 either. Pass the input inline to the build and both test steps. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
WalkthroughThe integration-test workflow passes the selected Mercurial version to build and test commands and exposes it as an expected-version environment variable. The workflow sets TEST_EXPECTED_HG_VERSION from its hg-version input and VerifyHgWorking checks hg version reports that major version, so the MercurialVersion switch can't silently fall back to Mercurial 6 again. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Before this PR, the
hg-version: '3'legs of the release pipeline's integration tests ran Mercurial 6. There were three separate causes:MercurialVersion<Choose>were identical barePackageReferences, so they resolved to the central versions. The hg 3 branch now pinsSIL.Chorus.Mercurialto3.0.3.11withVersionOverride(NoWarn="NU1605", because LibChorus declares a dependency on Mercurial 6.5.1.43).dotnet testre-restores (older than Use central package managment #1558): the workflow builds withMercurialVersion=3and then runsdotnet test. Without the property, dotnet testrestores and builds again with the default 6, which re-stages hg 6 intobackend/Testing/Mercurial*. Locally this left an hg 3.3hg.exeloading an hg 6fixutf8, which failed to import. Both test steps now pass the property.windows-latestruns steps in pwsh, where$MERCURIAL_VERSIONis an undefined PowerShell variable, not the env var. So the build got/p:MercurialVersion=and fell back to 6. The input is now inlined as${{ inputs.hg-version }}.Guard against a repeat: the workflow sets
TEST_EXPECTED_HG_VERSIONfromhg-version, andVerifyHgWorking(FlakyIntegration step) asserts thathg versionreports that major version. The check is skipped when the variable isn't set, so local runs aren't affected.LibChorus stays on the central
6.0.0-beta0074in both legs. The old hg 3 pin,6.0.0-beta0041, depends on SIL.Core 12 (we're on 18) and would be a downgrade: LfMergeBridge needs LibChorus ≥ beta0063, and ChorusMerge (via FwHeadless) needs beta0074. So this tests a hg 3 client binary with current LibChorus. Nobody has checked that this combination passes the integration tests yet. What each leg resolves to (
backend/Testing/obj/project.assets.json, plusbin/Mercurial/hg.exe --version):./binMercurialVersion=6(default)MercurialVersion=3Known leftover: Testing now references FwHeadless (it didn't before #1558), and FwHeadless stages its own hg 6 into the same output. In the hg 3 leg, Testing's files win where paths overlap, but hg 6-only files (
lib/,python39.dll) sit alongside. hg 3.3 runs and loads its extensions fine on Windows. I haven't verified this on Linux.release-pipeline.yamlalready calls this workflow withhg-version: '3'on ubuntu-latest and windows-latest against staging. After this merges, those legs will start running real hg 3 for the first time in a long while, and they may go red.deploy-prodstill runs when integration tests fail.Test plan
dotnet build LexBoxOnly.slnf -p:MercurialVersion=3, thendotnet test LexBoxOnly.slnf -p:MercurialVersion=3 --output ./bin(empty filter), from a clean state: assets resolve Mercurial 3.0.3.11,./bin/Mercurial/hg.exereports 3.3, and fixutf8 loadsMercurialVersion=6: LibChorus beta0074 / Mercurial 6.5.1.43, hg 6.5.1 (same as develop)hg versionprints(version 3.3)/(version 6.5.1)on the two legs, so the(version {major}.check passes only on the matching leg; Testing builds🤖 Generated with Claude Code
