What this fixes

The published 1.1.0 build (release tarball and the Homebrew bottle) crashes on every macOS older than 26, before main() even runs:

dyld[33157]: Library not loaded: /usr/lib/swift/libswift_DarwinFoundation1.dylib
  Referenced from: /opt/homebrew/Cellar/removemacai/1.1.0/bin/removemacai
  (built for macOS 26.0 which is newer than running OS)
Reason: tried: ... '/usr/lib/swift/libswift_DarwinFoundation1.dylib' (no such file, not in dyld cache)
[1]    33157 abort      removemacai

The binary's load command says it all:

LC_BUILD_VERSION  platform 1  minos 26.0  sdk 26.5

Because the deployment target is 26.0, the linker emits dependencies on Swift runtime libraries that only ship starting in macOS 26 (libswift_DarwinFoundation1.dylib, libswift_DarwinFoundation2.dylib). On macOS 15 they do not exist, so dyld aborts. The /opt/homebrew/opt/unixodbc path in the message is just a stray Homebrew rpath; none of the tried paths can exist on those systems.

This traces back to commit 70bf1af ("Build for macOS 26 so the app gets the current system design"), which changed exactly one line:

-  platforms: [.macOS(.v14)],
+  platforms: [.macOS("26.0")],

The premise behind that change is wrong: the new system design comes from building against the macOS 26 SDK, not from setting the deployment target to 26. Building with the 26 SDK and a lower minimum target keeps Liquid Glass on macOS 26 while letting the same binary run on macOS 15.

Changes

1. Run on macOS 15 (Package.swift, main.swift, build-app.sh)

  • Package.swift — platforms: [.macOS("26.0")] → .macOS("15.0"). The real crash fix; the SDK is still macOS 26.
  • Sources/removemacai/main.swift — the two hard runtime guards majorVersion >= 26 → >= 15. Even a correctly linked binary was refusing to run below 26.
  • tools/build-app.sh — LSMinimumSystemVersion 26.0 → 15.0 so the app bundle agrees with the binary.

macOS 15 is the floor because Apple Intelligence starts at macOS 15 (Sequoia); there is nothing to remove on 14, so 15 is the correct minimum rather than 14.

2. Hide the Apple Intelligence features this macOS does not have (Catalog.swift and its callers)

Apple ships Apple Intelligence in waves, so several catalog entries only exist from a later macOS. Offering them on an older system meant the profile set restriction keys macOS ignores, and off asked the asset service to remove a model set it cannot resolve:

Feature Available from Evidence
ChatGPT and other AI extensions macOS 15.2 allowExternalIntelligenceIntegrations* documented "macOS 15.2+"
Notes transcription summaries macOS 15.3 allowNotesTranscriptionSummary documented "macOS 15.3+"
Mail summaries and smart replies macOS 15.4 allowMailSummary 15.1+, allowMailSmartReplies documented "macOS 15.4+"
Safari summaries macOS 15.4 allowSafariSummary documented "macOS 15.4+"
Spatial Photos macOS 26 UAFConfigurationManager.getAssetSet:@"com.apple.MobileAsset.UAF.Photos.SpatialPhotosRelive" returns nil on 15.8.1; the set is only defined in the 26.0/26.1/27.2 AssetData

Each Feature now carries a since: (major, minor) version and a supported check. Catalog.availableFeatures / Catalog.availableModelSets feed status, features, off --keep, the profile and the app, so an unsupported feature is hidden rather than half working. off --keep now names a feature that is not on this macOS instead of silently accepting it. setsToRemove only ever targets model sets a supported feature names, so off never asks the asset service to remove the Spatial Photos set macOS 15 does not describe.

This mirrors the since gating the tweaks already use.

Verified on macOS 15.8.1

Rebuilt and installed locally from this branch:

$ otool -l .../removemacai | grep -A3 LC_BUILD_VERSION
    minos 15.0
      sdk 26.2

$ otool -L .../removemacai | grep -i DarwinFoundation   # (no output)

$ removemacai selftest
all checks passed

$ removemacai --version
1.1.0

removemacai status and the app run cleanly on 15.8.1. Spatial Photos is gone from status, features and the app's Apple Intelligence list, off --keep spatial-photos is rejected, and the remaining 13 features still report and remove as before. New selftest checks cover the gating.

Here is the app running on macOS 15.8.1 (built from this branch):

RemoveMacAI running on macOS 15.8.1

Notes

  • No destructive command (off, apply, clean) was run while verifying; only read-only status and selftest.
  • .github/workflows/* run on macos-26, so once this lands every new artifact will carry minos 15.0 and run back to Sequoia. The Homebrew formula pulls the prebuilt tarball, so it needs a new release (and bottle) to pick this up.
  • The tweaks' since field still defaults to (14, 0). That governs the debloat settings (Dock, Safari, etc.), not Apple Intelligence; since the app now requires 15 those are all reachable. Left as is.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Compatibility
    • The app and CLI now support macOS 15 and newer, instead of requiring macOS 26 or newer.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Features and model sets are now limited to those supported by the current macOS version, so unavailable options are excluded from listings, counts, and removal settings.
    • Keeping a feature that is unavailable on the current macOS version now reports a version-specific error.

The release was built with a macOS 26 deployment target, so the linker
made the executable depend on Swift runtime libraries that only exist on
macOS 26 (libswift_DarwinFoundation1.dylib and libswift_DarwinFoundation2.dylib).
On macOS 14 and 15 dyld cannot find them and the process aborts before
main() runs:

  dyld: Library not loaded: /usr/lib/swift/libswift_DarwinFoundation1.dylib
    Referenced from: .../removemacai (built for macOS 26.0 which is newer than running OS)

The new system design comes from building against the macOS 26 SDK, not
from setting the deployment target to 26, so lower the target back to 14
and keep the 26 SDK. The runtime guards and the app bundle's
LSMinimumSystemVersion are lowered to match.

Fixes running on macOS 14 (Sonoma) and macOS 15 (Sequoia).
Apple Intelligence starts at macOS 15, so there is nothing to remove on 14.
Raise the deployment target, the runtime guards and the app bundle's
LSMinimumSystemVersion to 15.

Walkthrough

The package deployment target, app-launch and CLI version checks, and app bundle metadata now specify macOS 15 instead of macOS 26. Catalog features and model sets are filtered by macOS support, and app and CLI behavior uses those available entries. The CLI selftest command remains exempt from the version check.

This change lets the app run on macOS 15, but three problems remain. The built-in self-test can fail or crash on macOS 15.0. Mail summaries cannot be turned off on 15.1–15.3. After an OS upgrade, newly available settings may never be applied while the tool still reports success. These should be resolved before merging.

Apple ships Apple Intelligence in waves, so several catalog entries only
exist from a later macOS: ChatGPT (15.2), Notes summaries (15.3), Mail
smart replies and Safari summaries (15.4), and Spatial Photos, whose
asset set com.apple.MobileAsset.UAF.Photos.SpatialPhotosRelive macOS 15

Offering those on an older macOS meant the profile set restriction keys

remaining 13 features still work. selftest covers the gating.

Separate the Mail summary and smart-reply version gates.

On macOS 15.1–15.3, this gate hides allowMailSummary because allowMailSmartReplies requires 15.4. Apple lists allowMailSummary as available from macOS 15.1. Split the controls, or gate each key separately, so the profile can disable Mail summaries on those releases. (developer.apple.com)

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Refresh the profile when an OS upgrade adds features.

If a person installs the profile on macOS 15.1 and upgrades to 15.4, this loop never added the 15.4-only settings to the installed profile. Commands.off() can still take its profileReady && modelsBefore == 0 shortcut because the stored kept IDs have not changed. It then reports success without installing the newly required settings. Compare the installed profile’s effective settings with newly generated profile data, or record catalog coverage and require a profile update after the OS upgrade.

Make the self-test valid on macOS 15.0.

On macOS 15.0, every catalog feature fails the default 15.1 minimum. keptWriting therefore cannot contain visualModels, so this assertion fails. The same empty model-set list also leaves no download-blocking payload for the force unwrap at Line 155. Test the expected empty catalog on 15.0, and avoid unwrapping a payload that this supported OS cannot produce.
