feat(scene): browser sources on the CPU path need no X display - #55
CEF's browser process opened an X display even to paint offscreen. Browser sources failed with "Missing X server or $DISPLAY" under Wayland without XWayland, and just render-sw (and the nightly job through it) needed xvfb-run.
Approach
The CPU path adds --ozone-platform=headless, so it opens no display.
Headless Ozone has no platform clipboard, so on the CPU path, Copy and Cut under Interact go through the studio:
The helper asks the focused frame's renderer for its selection (CefDOMDocument::GetSelectionAsText). The renderer answers, then cuts if asked.
The studio takes the answer from Helper::copied() each frame (one slot for every page) and puts it on the desktop clipboard with egui's copy_text.
A focused password field answers nothing, as in a browser. A cut answers only from an editable node, since Blink deletes nothing elsewhere.
The helper numbers each copy and accepts only the newest copy's answer, once. A slow renderer cannot overwrite a newer copy, nor set the clipboard unasked.
The GPU path still opens a display, so it keeps CEF's native frame.copy() / frame.cut(). There the page's copy and cut handlers still decide what lands on the clipboard.
just render-sw drops xvfb-run.
The GPU path cannot go headless (see Findings), so the quest is rewritten to what remains for it.
Findings
Clipboard: Chromium's headless Ozone platform has no GetPlatformClipboard, so CEF's frame.copy() stays inside CEF there. Hence the relay above.
Password fields: a first try kept CEF's OnTextSelectionChanged text. CEF 156 reports a password field's real selection there; CEF master redacts it since chromiumembedded/cef@a145f2b. The renderer round trip reads the renderer's own state at copy time instead. It needs no ordering between the focus and selection IPCs, and it covers selections a script made. Blink masks a password's SelectionAsText as bullets; the renderer sends nothing instead.
GPU path headless: no. Headless Ozone allocates TestPixmaps with no DMA-BUF (ui/ozone/platform/headless/headless_surface_factory.cc). In a trial on NixOS (RTX 3070 Ti, NVIDIA 580.178), its GPU process failed to start EGL ("Could not open the default X display"), and pages fell back to painting into memory (Paint::Cpu).
GPU path under pure Wayland:--ozone-platform=wayland, with only WAYLAND_DISPLAY set, painted shared textures (Paint::Gpu) on the same host. Under XWayland with the default X11 Ozone, that host's GPU path never painted ("gbm device is missing"); this PR does not change that. Both findings are in the rewritten quest.
Impact
Browser sources on the CPU path (a software Vulkan device, or one that cannot import DMA-BUFs) need no X server or $DISPLAY. README says so.
On the CPU path, Copy and Cut from a page under Interact reach the desktop clipboard through the studio, under any session. Copying from a password field copies nothing. The text copied is the selection; a page's own copy handler cannot rewrite it on this path. The GPU path is unchanged.
just render-sw and the nightly job no longer use Xvfb.
Public API: new moq_scene::browser::Helper::copied(), which returns the text the last Copy or Cut on any page took, once, on the CPU path. The helper protocol gains Event::Copied; the studio and its helper are the same binary. No wire impact.
Alternatives
X11 when $DISPLAY is set, headless only without one: rejected. It means two runtime paths for the CPU path, and the clipboard still fails under pure Wayland.
Track the selection from OnTextSelectionChanged, and password focus from OnFocusedNodeChanged: rejected. CEF 156 leaks password selections there, and the answer depends on two IPC paths arriving in order.
Capture a page copy handler's clipboardData on the CPU path: rejected. It needs V8 script around a native Copy, which is a lot of machinery for overlays and chat widgets that rarely rewrite copied text.
Bump CEF to a release with the redaction: rejected. No released CEF has it yet, and a bump is its own quest.
Validation
All Linux runs are on NixOS (x86_64), in a scratch clone at ab3dc81 (merged with origin/main 5709ef7) unless noted:
env -u DISPLAY -u WAYLAND_DISPLAY just render-sw: all three suites pass (35 compositor, 5 studio, 9 browser) with no display.
just ci: passes (246 tests).
Browser suite with no display: 10/10 runs at 34df7a3, and 20/20 at a524290 under host load average 40 to 47.
copy_and_cut_reach_the_clipboard fails as expected with the password check removed (left: Some("•••••••")).
First-paint timings, 10 interleaved runs each, -j1, lavapipe. Main under xvfb-run against this branch (at a9b9e1b) with no display, median (min) seconds:
a_page_draws_and_plays: 0.693 (0.666) against 0.675 (0.651)
a_webgl_page_draws: 0.429 (0.416) against 0.432 (0.402)
a_click_reaches_the_page: 0.487 (0.408) against 0.430 (0.403)
Frame time, GPU copies, and encoder load do not change: the paint path is the same OnPaint upload.
just check on macOS passes.
Flake, unrelated to this PR: source::media_tests::a_media_file_restarts_going_on_program timed out at 60 s in three of eight full just ci runs under host load (the last at b1727ae, which passed on rerun at ab3dc81). It also timed out in 1 of 3 runs of that test alone on this branch. In 30 interleaved runs alone (15 on main 8d8c5ea, 15 on the branch), and 8 full moq-scene runs on main, it passed every time. The branch does not touch media code.
Not run: the studio GUI end to end (a real Ctrl+C into another app), and the GPU path's copy (it is the unchanged frame.copy()). The UI side uses the ctx.copy_text the studio already uses for links and filters.
Follow-ups
The rewritten quest/m0/cef-headless.md covers the GPU path under Wayland via --ozone-platform=wayland, and the CPU path when no display exists. Under Wayland Ozone the GPU path will likely need this PR's clipboard relay too.
Worth a quest: a_media_file_restarts_going_on_program hangs to its 60 s timeout under load (above).
Review
Reviewer: Codex (quest review), gpt-6.1-sol, medium effort.
Clipboard replies were drained only from pages Interact held. Fixed in bf9f912; superseded by the single slot in ab3dc81.
The relay bypasses page copy and cut handlers. Refuted for the CPU path: capturing clipboardData needs V8 machinery for a rare case on overlays, and before this PR that path copied nothing without an X display. Narrowed to the round 2 finding.
Round 2 finding:
The GPU path has a display, so it should keep native copy and cut. Fixed in 34df7a3.
Round 3: no findings.
Round 4 finding:
A slow renderer's late answer could overwrite a newer copy from another page. Fixed in b1727ae: the helper numbers copies and accepts only the newest answer, once.
Also in this round: the pullfrog thread (a cut over non-editable text copied it) was fixed in 7d72e6e.
Round 5 finding:
Two accepted copies between frames were drained in page-name order. Fixed in ab3dc81: one Helper::copied() slot, replacing Page::copied. This also settles the CodeRabbit thread.
Design checkpoint at round 4: the approach held. The later findings were ordering refinements of the same relay, and each fix made it simpler (a single slot instead of per-page slots).
Also fixed between rounds 1 and 2 (a524290): the test resent Copy until a reply came. It now copies once, after the page shows its selection.
The CPU path runs CEF on Chromium's headless Ozone platform, so it opens no
display: browser sources work under Wayland without XWayland and with no
display at all, and just render-sw drops xvfb-run. Copy and Cut under
Interact ask the focused frame's renderer for its selection, never a
password field's, and the studio puts it on the desktop's clipboard, which
CEF's own reaches only through a display.
The GPU path cannot go headless (no DMA-BUF pixmaps there), so the quest is
rewritten to what remains for it.

With a display, CEF's clipboard is the desktop's, and the page's copy and cut
handlers decide what lands there; only the CPU path relays its selection.

ℹ️ One minor behavior difference on the CPU path; the rest of the change is sound.
Reviewed changes
Headless CPU path — Adds --ozone-platform=headless so the helper paints offscreen with no X display, letting just render-sw and the nightly job drop xvfb-run.
Clipboard relay — On the CPU path, Copy and Cut ask the focused frame's renderer for its selection, answer through Event::Copied, and reach the desktop clipboard via Page::copied(); password fields answer nothing and unasked answers are dropped.
GPU path unchanged — Keeps CEF's native frame.copy() / frame.cut() when the helper is accelerated, where a display backs the clipboard.
Per-frame drain — App::ui drains every browser source's Page::copied() once per frame, so a copy survives the preview letting go.
Docs and quest — README and the cef-headless quest now describe the headless CPU path and the remaining GPU work.
Test — copy_and_cut_reach_the_clipboard covers copy, cut, and password suppression.

Walkthrough
The browser host now handles copy and cut inputs through CEF for GPU rasterization and through renderer messages for CPU rasterization. Copied text moves through a browser event and page state to the Studio clipboard. Password-field selections do not produce copied text. CPU rasterization adds Chromium's headless Ozone platform setting. Documentation describes CPU and GPU display behavior, and render-sw runs the CEF browser test without xvfb-run.
Merge Risk: Low · previous review 34df7
The CPU path removes the display requirement, but page copy buttons can stop updating the desktop clipboard, and overlapping copies can leave older text. These bounded clipboard limitations warrant owner awareness or correction before merging.

The new CPU selection request uses a renderer process message immediately after previously queued browser input, without an explicit input-completion barrier. If these transports are scheduled differently, the selection request can overtake the keyboard or pointer input that establishes the selection.
Copy returns an empty or previous selection instead of the newly selected text.
This can occur when: Ctrl+A followed quickly by Copy reaches apply in one batch while the renderer has not yet applied Ctrl+A.

The CPU path stops page-initiated copies from reaching the desktop clipboard.
Before this PR, the helper inherited the studio's DISPLAY. A copy that a page started itself, through a button or a Clipboard API write, could reach the desktop clipboard. The CPU path now uses ozone-platform=headless, which does not open a display. Only Input::Copy and Input::Cut send a COPY request and reach the studio clipboard. A page-initiated copy now reaches neither the desktop clipboard nor the studio clipboard. This change is a regression from the base revision on ordinary launches. It is not a gap that predates this PR.

Add a UI-level check for the desktop clipboard handoff.
The new test stops at Page::copied(). It never runs the ui.ctx().copy_text(text) loop in Studio::ui, so a regression that drops that call would still pass. The test name, copy_and_cut_reach_the_clipboard, also claims more than the test checks.

Extend `copy_and_cut_reach_the_clipboard` beyond `Page::copied()` to run the
`Studio::ui` path and verify that `ui.ctx().copy_text(text)` hands the text to
the desktop clipboard using the test’s available clipboard mechanism. If the
test cannot verify that handoff, rename it to describe only what it checks.
Cover Copy sent right after a selection key, without a paint wait.
copy_and_cut_reach_the_clipboard waits for the yellow paint before it sends Input::Copy. In interact.rs, the egui::Event::Key arm sends Input::Key and the egui::Event::Copy arm sends Input::Copy as separate events in one event loop, with no wait between them. When a selection key and a Copy event arrive in the same batch, Studio sends them in that order. The test never produces that order, so a change in how these two inputs are delivered would not fail it.
Add a case that sends Ctrl+A with Input::Key and then Input::Copy with no paint wait, and asserts that copied() returns hello world. This case exercises the input order that the existing test avoids.

Assert the empty value after Cut, not only the color.
The oninput handler turns the page lime for any edit to the text box. A cut that replaces the selection with other text also fires input, so this test passes without proof that the selection was deleted. The doc comment says Cut deletes the text, but no assertion checks that. Setting the color from this.value makes the wait for GREEN succeed only when the value is empty.

Update the test page’s oninput handler used by the Cut test so it sets the
background to lime only when the text box value is empty, and to a contrasting
color otherwise. Preserve the existing GREEN wait and copied-text assertion so
the test verifies that Cut deletes the selected text.
Isolate the browser test from inherited display variables.
The browser step inherits DISPLAY and WAYLAND_DISPLAY from the shell. With a display set, CEF can use it without the ozone-platform=headless switch that the CPU branch now sets. A local just render-sw run in that session can then pass even if the switch is removed. Unsetting these variables for the browser step makes local runs match the displayless path.

We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
The new test unconditionally expects a Page::copied() result, whereas the GPU implementation intentionally uses native copying and emits no such result. The test may fail on a supported hardware-Vulkan runner.
The test times out with the copy never came back despite correct GPU-path behavior.
This can occur when: The ignored browser test runs with CEF enabled on a hardware adapter for which Helper::new enables shared GPU rendering.

Replies are matched only against a page-wide count; neither request order nor the requesting frame is identified. An older iframe reply can therefore be accepted after a newer copy and overwrite its clipboard result.
The desktop clipboard can end up containing A's older selection rather than B's most recent selection.
This can occur when: Copy is requested in iframe A, then in iframe B of the same page, and B's renderer replies before A's.

Automated review by review (OpenAI)
Reviewed commit c8cff02. The CPU-only headless path and preserving native GPU clipboard behavior are reasonable scope choices. The latest request-ordering change has one data-loss case:
[P2] Preserve a successful cut when a newer cut is empty (rs/moq-scene/src/browser/host.rs:639–645). If two Cut inputs arrive in one batch, COPYING holds the second request number before either reply is processed. The first renderer Cut returns selected text and deletes it; the second sees an empty selection. The first nonempty reply is discarded as stale, while the empty second reply produces no Event::Copied, so text disappears without reaching the desktop clipboard. Preserve the newest successful nonempty copy rather than discarding it merely because a newer request exists. Add a regression with two consecutive Cut events after selecting text.
Verification: GitHub-only static review of the changed clipboard and lifecycle paths. I did not run tests or GUI clipboard integration.
