Repeat visits revalidate every /_astro/ file today (public, max-age=0, must-revalidate), even though each filename contains a content hash. This adds public/_headers to mark them immutable, and leaves HTML and unhashed public/ files as they are.

Decision: this is more than the _headers rule

_headers alone also applies to the not_found_handling 404 page, so a missing /_astro/ file was served as immutable for a year. A browser that hit a 404 on a new hash during a deploy could keep that broken URL long after the file appeared.

So misses now go to the Worker, because _headers skips Worker responses. That also removes run_worker_first, since vanity paths have no asset and reach the Worker anyway.

The trade-off is that every asset miss now counts as a Worker request, including scanner traffic. If you'd rather keep misses free, dropping the Worker and wrangler.jsonc changes leaves just the rule, with the immutable 404s.

Verification

From just build staging and local wrangler dev:

Request Status Cache-Control
/_astro/Town10HD_Opt.aerial.wCIFmFB-.webp 200 public, max-age=31536000, immutable
/_astro/global.DAz3NuHk.css 200 public, max-age=31536000, immutable
/, /blog/ 200 public, max-age=0, must-revalidate
/hang.svg, /assets/render-worklet.js 200 public, max-age=0, must-revalidate
/_astro/does-not-exist.js (GET, HEAD, Sec-Fetch-Mode: cors) 404 public, max-age=0, must-revalidate
  • The rule without the Worker change returned that same 404 with public, max-age=31536000, immutable.
  • All 42 files in dist/_astro/ have a hash in their name.
  • /_headers returns 404, /blog still redirects to /blog/, and the /moq and /moq-ffi/sub vanity paths still answer go-get.
  • The new regression test in worker/index.test.ts fails against the old Worker.

Not deployed, so none of this has been checked on Cloudflare's production network. After a staging deploy, repeat the requests above with curl -I.

Every filename under /_astro/ contains a content hash, so browsers can keep
them instead of revalidating on each visit.

_headers also applies to not_found_handling responses, which would cache a
missing /_astro/ file as immutable. The Worker now answers misses, since
_headers skips Worker responses. That also makes run_worker_first redundant,
so the Go vanity paths no longer need to start with /moq.

Walkthrough

The change adds immutable caching for /_astro/* assets. It updates asset configuration and Worker handling so that requests not handled by vanity receive the /404 asset with status 404. The test checks the response and the asset request path.

Merge Risk: Low · up to beac1

The change is mergeable with a small test follow-up to assert that missing assets are not cached as immutable. Current evidence establishes no broken vanity paths or incorrect cache headers.

Assert that the missing-asset 404 does not carry immutable.

The missing-asset test checks the status, body, and env.seen, but not Cache-Control. The Worker builds its 404 response from the /404 asset's headers (worker/index.ts:21-22). A change that sets immutable on that response would pass the current test. Add an assertion on the header. The fallback to "" handles the mock, which returns no Cache-Control.

Suggested fix
 		expect(env.seen).toEqual(["/404"]);
+		expect(res.headers.get("cache-control") ?? "").not.toContain("immutable");
