Adds the first native Python MiniPdf package and prepares its PyPI release.

Summary

  • add a pure Python minipdf API and CLI under minipdf-python/
  • convert basic DOCX paragraphs, run formatting, page geometry, margins, and explicit page breaks to deterministic PDF 1.4 output
  • support path and in-memory byte APIs plus OOXML package validation
  • add 19 API, CLI, security, and DOCX tests
  • add Windows/Linux Python CI for Python 3.10, 3.12, and 3.13
  • add PyPI Trusted Publishing workflow for python-v<version> releases
  • package the Apache-2.0 license in wheel and sdist

Initial scope

Version 0.1.0 uses built-in Latin PDF fonts. Tables, images, embedded fonts, CJK/RTL shaping, XLSX, and PPTX remain explicitly unsupported.

Validation

  • python -m pytest minipdf-python/tests -q (19 passed)
  • python -m ruff check minipdf-python
  • python -m ruff format --check minipdf-python
  • python -m mypy minipdf-python/src minipdf-python/tests
  • python -m build minipdf-python
  • python -m twine check minipdf-python/dist/*
  • clean-wheel install, CLI conversion, and PDF 1.4 smoke test

Publishing prerequisite

Before the first release, the pending PyPI Trusted Publisher is already configured for project minipdf, repository mini-software/MiniPdf, workflow pypi-publish.yml, environment pypi. Then publish a GitHub release tagged python-v0.1.0.

Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to 502d7

Common DOCX formatting can produce visibly incorrect PDFs, malformed inputs can break conversion, and the release workflow can publish unintended or injected code. These issues should be fixed before the initial PyPI release.

the existing automatic tag-trigger behavior and prevent branch-based manual
publishing.
- Line 46: Update the workflow step using TAG_VERSION so inputs.version is

- Line 112: Validate the effective content geometry after applying the page-size
override in the document rendering flow: ensure the computed available width and
vertical content area are nonnegative before initializing cursor_y or rendering
lines. Reject incompatible page sizes or clamp the effective margins so content
remains within the usable page area, preserving normal behavior for valid
geometry.
- Line 121: Update the paragraph rendering loop around paragraph.runs to
maintain a horizontal cursor across consecutive runs, placing each styled span
after the previous run on the same line. Advance cursor_y only when wrapping is
required, and reset the horizontal cursor appropriately when starting a new line
or paragraph.
- Line 40: Update _points() to reject non-finite parsed OOXML numeric values,
including NaN and infinities, and raise PackageError before returning or
allowing layout to continue. Ensure the same validation covers numeric values
used by _number() so non-finite margins cannot reach PDF serialization, while
preserving existing handling of valid values and parse errors.
- Around line 78-86: Update read_document’s run font-size handling so the raw
w:sz half-point value is divided by 2 before being passed to _points and used to
create TextStyle, producing the correct point size. Keep _points unchanged for
page geometry conversions.

GitHub Actions workflow_dispatch selected branch ref actions/checkout default ref documentation

💡 Result:

When a GitHub Actions workflow is triggered manually using the workflow_dispatch event, the user can select a specific branch or tag from the GitHub UI [1][2]. The actions/checkout action automatically respects this selection by default [3][4]. Specifically, the behavior of actions/checkout regarding the ref parameter is as follows: 1. Default Behavior: When checking out the repository that triggered the workflow, actions/checkout defaults to the reference (branch, tag, or SHA) that triggered the event [3][4][5]. If you select a specific branch when manually triggering a workflow_dispatch event, that branch is passed as the reference to the workflow, and actions/checkout will check it out automatically [6]. 2. Overriding the Default: If you wish to ensure that a specific branch (such as main or master) is always checked out, regardless of the branch selected in the UI, you must explicitly set the ref parameter in your checkout step [6]: - uses: actions/checkout@v4 with: ref: 'main' 3. Technical Context: The workflow_dispatch event trigger only functions when the workflow file exists on the repository's default branch [7][1][2]. When manually triggered, the selected branch ref is available to the workflow context [1][6]. The checkout action's internal logic uses the workflow context's ref when no ref is provided in the action configuration [5].

Citations:

Require an exact release tag for manual publishing.

The publish job runs for every workflow_dispatch event. actions/checkout checks out the selected ref. The version check compares only inputs.version with minipdf-python/pyproject.toml. A manual run from a branch can therefore publish that branch’s package. Restrict manual runs to a matching python-v<version> tag, or remove workflow_dispatch.

GitHub Actions expressions untrusted input run shell script injection official documentation

💡 Result:

In GitHub Actions, using expressions directly within a run command is a significant security risk known as script injection [1][2][3]. This vulnerability occurs because the ${{ }} expression syntax is evaluated and expanded as a macro before the shell script runs [1][3]. If the expression contains untrusted input—such as content from pull request titles, issue bodies, or other GitHub event metadata—an attacker can inject malicious shell commands that the runner will execute [1][4][5]. Key defensive strategies to prevent this include: 1. Use Intermediate Environment Variables (Recommended for Inline Scripts) The most effective way to handle untrusted input in inline scripts is to pass it through an environment variable [2][6][7]. This ensures the value is stored in memory and treated as a variable rather than being directly interpolated into the shell script generation process [4][6][7]. Example of vulnerable code: run: echo "${{ github.event.issue.title }}" # VULNERABLE Example of secure code: - name: Echo issue title env: ISSUE_TITLE: ${{ github.event.issue.title }} run: echo "$ISSUE_TITLE" # SECURE 2. Use Custom Actions The preferred architectural approach is to move logic involving untrusted input into a dedicated action (e.g., a JavaScript or composite action) [4][6]. When you pass untrusted data as an argument to an action, it is handled as a literal input rather than being evaluated as part of a shell script, effectively mitigating injection risks [4][6][7]. 3. Implement Additional Hardening - Limit Permissions: Always restrict the permissions of the GITHUB_TOKEN at the job level to the minimum required scope, such as read [2][5]. - Avoid Risky Triggers: Be cautious when using event triggers like pull_request_target or workflow_run with untrusted code, as these are highly privileged and can be exploited to compromise the repository [6][8][5]. - Enable Automation: Utilize security tools like CodeQL (which includes specific queries for detecting unsafe interpolation) to scan your workflow files for potential injection vulnerabilities automatically [9][3]. For more information, refer to the official GitHub documentation on security hardening for GitHub Actions [1][6].

Pass inputs.version through the environment.

The workflow expands inputs.version into Bash source before validation. A crafted value can execute shell commands in the job, which has id-token: write. Store the input in env and read it as "$INPUT_VERSION".

mypy configuration file discovery current working directory parent directories --config-file documentation

💡 Result:

Mypy uses a specific hierarchical process to discover configuration files. By default, mypy searches for a configuration file by starting in the current working directory and walking up the directory tree until it reaches the root of a repository (e.g., a directory containing a.git or.hg folder) or the root of the filesystem [1][2][3]. In each directory along this path, mypy checks for the following configuration files in this specific order of precedence [1][3]: 1. mypy.ini 2..mypy.ini 3. pyproject.toml (containing a [tool.mypy] section) 4. setup.cfg (containing a [mypy] section) If no configuration file is discovered during this upward search, mypy proceeds to check the following default user-level locations in order [1][3]: 1. $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/mypy/config 2. ~/.config/mypy/config 3. ~/.mypy.ini The --config-file command-line flag can be used to explicitly specify a configuration file path [1][4]. This flag holds the highest precedence; if provided, mypy will use the specified file and ignore the default discovery process [1][3]. If --config-file is used with an empty value (e.g., --config-file=), mypy will ignore all configuration files entirely [4][5]. Mypy does not merge multiple configuration files; it selects the first one found based on the precedence rules above [1][3].

Run mypy with the package configuration.

The command runs from the repository root, but the only [tool.mypy] section is in minipdf-python/pyproject.toml. Mypy therefore skips strict = true and python_version = "3.10", so CI can pass without enforcing the package type-checking contract. Add --config-file minipdf-python/pyproject.toml.

Reject non-finite OOXML numeric values.

_points() accepts NaN because float() accepts non-finite values and the function catches only ValueError. A non-finite w:sz reaches int(available_width / average_width) in render_document() and raises ValueError. A non-finite margin can also reach _number() and produce an invalid PDF numeric token. Validate finite values and raise PackageError before layout.

In `@minipdf-python/src/minipdf/docx.py` at line 40, Update _points() to reject
non-finite parsed OOXML numeric values, including NaN and infinities, and raise
PackageError before returning or allowing layout to continue. Ensure the same
validation covers numeric values used by _number() so non-finite margins cannot
reach PDF serialization, while preserving existing handling of valid values and
parse errors.

Convert w:sz from half-points before creating TextStyle.

read_document passes the raw w:sz value to _points, which divides by 20. The DOCX test producer emits w:sz w:val="28" (14 points), but the PDF path writes 1.4 Tf, so styled text renders at one-tenth size. Divide run font sizes by 2 before conversion, while retaining _points for page geometry.

Validate effective content geometry after a page-size override.

PageSize(100, 100) is valid, but the fixture document margins are 72 points on every side. This makes available_width negative and places cursor_y below the bottom margin. Each nonempty line then creates another page and renders outside the usable area. Reject incompatible geometry or constrain the effective margins before rendering.

content geometry after applying the page-size override in the document rendering
flow: ensure the computed available width and vertical content area are
nonnegative before initializing cursor_y or rendering lines. Reject incompatible
page sizes or clamp the effective margins so content remains within the usable
page area, preserving normal behavior for valid geometry.

Lay out consecutive runs on the same paragraph line.

The renderer starts each Run at the left margin and decrements cursor_y for every run. A paragraph with Hello in one run and bold world in the next produces two lines instead of one styled line. Track a horizontal cursor and wrap styled spans across runs.

rendering loop around paragraph.runs to maintain a horizontal cursor across
consecutive runs, placing each styled span after the previous run on the same
line. Advance cursor_y only when wrapping is required, and reset the horizontal
cursor appropriately when starting a new line or paragraph.
