Summary

Makes Avo a single-host, single-user product instead of a separately configured frontend and API.

One deployment

  • FastAPI now serves the exported Expo web app and /api/* from the same process/hostname
  • root Dockerfile builds the Expo web bundle and packages it into the Python runtime image
  • normal web deployment no longer needs an API URL, API token, or CORS configuration
  • native iOS continues to use the same https://avo.penginlab.com backend

Passkey auth

  • removes permanent API-token authentication
  • one implicit owner account, with no password/user/org machinery
  • WebAuthn discoverable passkeys with required user verification
  • short-lived one-time bootstrap enrollment code via avo-harness auth bootstrap
  • bootstrap enrollment automatically stops after the first passkey exists
  • additional passkeys can be added while signed in
  • web uses a Secure/HttpOnly/SameSite=Strict session cookie
  • native iOS receives an opaque session token stored in Expo SecureStore/Keychain
  • rolling 30-day sessions

iOS

  • associates com.kaitwalla.avocode with webcredentials:avo.penginlab.com
  • serves /.well-known/apple-app-site-association
  • AASA app identifier is configured from AVO_APPLE_TEAM_ID
  • native and web share the same passkey UI and API contract

Hardening

  • auth state lives in the existing SQLite state database
  • auth DB access uses per-operation connections for FastAPI thread-pool safety
  • SPA fallback does not swallow unknown /api/* or /.well-known/* routes
  • explicit local-only AVO_AUTH_DISABLED=1 escape hatch
  • authentication, bootstrap, session, AASA, and API-boundary tests

Validation

The final branch head passes:

  • Python/API test suite
  • strict TypeScript
  • Expo static web export
  • unified frontend/backend Docker image build

Review Change StackReview Change Stack

Walkthrough

The change replaces static API-token authentication with WebAuthn passkeys and SQLite-backed sessions. The FastAPI application adds enrollment, login, credential, logout, and static-hosting routes. The web and iOS clients add passkey flows and session handling. The Expo web build is embedded in a Python Docker image, and CI builds that image after tests.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to 74d39

Authentication can be bypassed or remain effective in several supported paths, and concurrent bootstrap requests can enroll an additional passkey. These issues should be fixed before merge.

In @.github/workflows/ci.yml:
- Line 45: Update the actions/checkout step to set persist-credentials to false,
and restrict the workflow or image job permissions to contents: read only.
Preserve the existing checkout behavior while preventing the GITHUB_TOKEN from
being written into the repository configuration.

In `@Dockerfile`:
- Line 23: Update the runtime stage around ENTRYPOINT to create a fixed
unprivileged user, grant it ownership of the application files and any required
runtime directories, then set USER to that account before ENTRYPOINT
["avo-harness", "web"].
- Line 4: Make the UI build deterministic by generating and committing
ui/package-lock.json, copying both package.json and package-lock.json before
installation, and replacing npm install with npm ci in the Docker build. Update
CI and README install commands to npm ci where they use the locked UI
dependencies.

In `@README.md`:
- Around line 71-73: Update the README command using AVO_AUTH_DISABLED=1 so the
avo-harness web server binds to 127.0.0.1 instead of 0.0.0.0, while preserving
the existing port and other options.

In `@src/avo_harness/api.py`:
- Line 232: Update the successful web-session validation flow around
AuthStore.validate_session to refresh or reissue the browser cookie with the
rolling SESSION_MAX_AGE expiry whenever the database session is extended.
Preserve existing behavior for invalid sessions and non-web authentication.
- Line 147: Restrict the AVO_AUTH_DISABLED bypass in authorize to loopback-only
operation: either force the server bind host to loopback when the flag is
enabled or reject startup if the configured host is non-loopback. Preserve
normal token validation when authentication is enabled.
- Around line 239-240: Update the native-client verification flow around the
native branch in the request-building logic so the client-controlled
X-Avo-Client header is not accepted as proof of a native client. Require an
app-bound token exchange or another server-verifiable native-client credential
before adding the session token to payload, while preserving normal behavior for
verified native clients.
- Line 412: Update the WebSocket send loop to revalidate the session with
auth_store.validate_session(token) before sending each run update when
authentication is enabled, and close or stop serving the connection if
validation fails. Preserve the existing behavior when auth_disabled is true.

In `@src/avo_harness/auth.py`:
- Around line 165-167: Update bootstrap_verify to perform the final eligibility
check, verified credential insertion, and conditional used_at update within one
AuthStore write transaction, reusing consume_bootstrap or replacing it as needed
so the credential insert and bootstrap consumption commit atomically and only
one request can enroll successfully.

In `@src/avo_harness/cli.py`:
- Line 192: Update the bootstrap CLI argument definition for --minutes in the
bootstrap parser to use an argument type that accepts only positive integers,
rejecting zero and negative values before command execution.

In `@ui/app/_layout.tsx`:
- Line 19: Guard the runs/[id] route before it loads run details by wrapping it
with AuthGate or an equivalent route-level authentication check, ensuring
unauthenticated users redirect to /login instead of reaching api.run(id) and
rendering request errors.

In `@ui/app/`(tabs)/settings.tsx:
- Around line 46-47: Update the logout flow around signOut and router.replace so
it catches API logout failures, sets a clear failure message, and still
redirects native users to /login after local cleanup. Ensure web logout clears
the local session or cookie, while preserving successful logout behavior.

In `@ui/lib/api.ts`:
- Line 116: Update the error-handling flow around response.json() and
response.text() to consume the response body only once, preserving the original
error and response status when JSON parsing fails. Reuse the single body read
for error-message extraction instead of attempting a subsequent response.text()
call.

Make the UI build deterministic.

ui/package.json contains wildcard and ranged dependencies, but no ui/package-lock.json exists. CI and the README also use npm install. Generate and commit the lockfile, then copy it before running npm ci:

COPY ui/package.json ui/package-lock.json ./
RUN npm ci

Update the CI and documented install commands to npm ci if they must use the same locked dependencies.

official python:3.12-slim Docker image Dockerfile USER default user

💡 Result:

<search_synthesis>
The official python:3.12-slim Docker image does not define a non-root default user [1][2]. By default, containers built from this image run as the root user (UID 0) [1]. If you require the application to run with lower privileges for security, you must explicitly create a user and switch to it within your own Dockerfile [1][2]. A common practice is to create a system user and group, transfer ownership of your application files to that user, and then use the USER instruction [1][2]: FROM python:3.12-slim WORKDIR /app #... (copy files, install dependencies)... # Create a non-root user RUN groupadd --system appgroup && \ useradd --system --no-create-home --gid appgroup appuser && \ chown -R appuser:appgroup /app # Switch to the non-root user USER appuser CMD ["python", "app.py"]

Broken Authentication

CWE: CWE-367 — Time-of-check Time-of-use (TOCTOU) Race Condition

Make bootstrap enrollment one atomic SQLite transaction.

bootstrap_verify validates the code, inserts the credential, and marks the code used through separate transactions. Two requests can therefore both pass validation and enroll distinct passkeys before either request consumes the code.

Move the final eligibility check, verified credential insertion, and conditional used_at update into one AuthStore write transaction so only one request can commit enrollment.

Reject non-positive bootstrap lifetimes.

--minutes 0 and negative values create an immediately expired code while the command reports success. Add an argument type that requires a positive integer.

Guard runs/[id] before loading run details.

runs/[id] is a sibling of the protected (tabs) layout. It calls api.run(id) directly and renders request errors instead of redirecting to /login. Wrap this route with AuthGate or add an equivalent route-level guard.

Handle logout failures by platform.

When api.logout() rejects, logout() skips router.replace('/login') and does not set message. Native signOut() only attempts to delete the SecureStore token in finally; the settings screen can remain visible without local authentication. On web, saveSessionToken('') is a no-op, so the browser cookie is not cleared locally. Catch the error, show a clear logout failure, and redirect native users after local cleanup.

If response.json() rejects, it has already consumed the body. The subsequent response.text() can reject and replace the intended error, including its status.
