Summary

Proposes the step past per-prover synonyms: a lexicon v2 schema that can record false friends, phrases, specialisations and equivalences with a witness, and a hub-and-probe identity-arbitration architecture for roadmap stage 6c (λΠ hub for sound, consequence-partition probes for epi) that maps onto the two ECH-05 FidelityEvidence constructors. The fusion mechanisms are untouched; the arbiter and ABI changes it needs are additive (a standpoint record on DeclaredCorrespondence so correlated probes cannot reach epi, and an injectivity requirement on KernelTranslation renderings).

Status is proposed. The five owner decisions (D1–D5: architecture, lexicon format, first probe pair, whether mined candidates may set semantic_class, whether to open the verisimdb issue) are listed in the ADR §7 with a recommendation each; nothing is ruled by this PR. Related: #190, #191, #429 (none closed).

Changes

  • docs/decisions/2026-10-19-lexicon-v2-and-identity-arbitration.adoc — the ADR: measured inventory (bridges, arbitration, lexicon coverage, corpus), two experiments, options rated (elegance/correctness, then dependability/security, with aspects), recommendation, proposed decision, stacked-PR work breakdown, cross-repo items, open owner decisions, non-claims.
  • scripts/false_friend_scan.sh — deterministic jq + coreutils census over training_data/proof_states_<prover>.jsonl for one prover pair: within-prover homonym rate, cross-prover name overlap, and cognate vs differing statement counts. Lexical evidence only; it never raises an arbitration level.

Measured on the owner's first stage-6a pair, HOL4 ↔ HOL Light: 5,060 shared theorem names; 1,030 statements equal after whitespace normalisation (cognates); 10,460 differing statement pairs, dominated by type generalisation (real vs real^N, abs vs norm), i.e. specialisation, a relation the current lexicon cannot express.

Review rounds landed on the branch: 38c986f (CodeRabbit: the script exited 141 under pipefail, string comparison, LC_ALL=C on uniq, measured-property wording, the evidence → FidelityEvidence mapping); 5be5583 (CodeRabbit docstrings, owner-triggered); 4486d2d (Codex: rows with an empty name or statement dropped from the census, the ADR no longer claims the exchange renderings fail safe, and probe independence is carried inside DeclaredCorrespondence rather than beside it). The ADR keeps CC-BY-SA-4.0 (prose, per NOTICE).

RSR Quality Checklist

Required

  • Tests pass (cargo check --lib green on this tree; no Rust touched, so the suite is unchanged)
  • Code is formatted (bash; bash -n clean)
  • Linter is clean (no new warnings or errors)
  • No banned language patterns (bash + jq; no Python, Go, npm)
  • No unsafe blocks without // SAFETY: comments (n/a)
  • No banned functions (believe_me, unsafeCoerce, Obj.magic, Admitted, sorry)
  • SPDX license headers present on all new/modified source files (MPL-2.0 script, CC-BY-SA-4.0 doc)
  • No secrets, credentials, or .env files included

As Applicable

  • Repo deed (status) / (maturity) updated — not changed (proposal only)
  • Repo deed (ecosystem) updated — not changed
  • Repo deed (meta) and/or docs/decisions/ updated — new ADR, status proposed
  • docs/status/ROADMAP.adoc updated — deliberately not: stage 6c row changes only once D1 is ruled
  • Documentation updated for user-facing changes — n/a
  • TOPOLOGY.md updated — n/a
  • CHANGELOG or release notes updated — not for a proposed ADR
  • New dependencies reviewed — none
  • ABI/FFI changes validated — none

Testing

scripts/false_friend_scan.sh training_data hol4 hol_light re-run after every change; the current head reproduces 95,738 / 90,168 / 3,755 for HOL4, 43,937 / 42,456 / 1,218 for HOL Light, 5,060 shared names, 11,490 pairs, 1,030 cognate, 10,460 differing, in under a minute, with exit status 0 (it was 141 before 38c986f). The within-prover census table was recomputed with the final extractor. No prover binary was available in the session container, so every number is lexical, as the ADR's non-claims section states.

The three red checks on this PR (T1 Guix manifest check, governance / JS runtimes — environment provisions Bun first, governance / Validate Hypatia Baseline) fail identically on main at 0d0aa0c; the comments below trace each one and the fix that belongs elsewhere.

Screenshots

== cross-prover name overlap: hol4 vs hol_light
shared names: 5060
hol4-only: 85108
hol_light-only: 37396

== shared names, statement text agreement (name-pairs: 11490)
cognate (equal after whitespace normalisation): 1030
differing statement text (false-friend or specialisation candidates): 10460

…R, with the false-friend census

Propose the next step past per-prover synonyms: a lexicon schema that can
record false friends, phrases, specialisations and equivalences with a
witness, and an identity-arbitration architecture (λΠ hub for `sound`,
consequence-partition probes for `epi`) that maps onto the two ECH-05
fidelity constructors without arbiter or ABI changes.

Add scripts/false_friend_scan.sh, a deterministic jq + coreutils census over
training_data/proof_states_*.jsonl. On the owner's first stage-6a pair
(HOL4 ↔ HOL Light) it finds 5,060 shared theorem names, 1,030 cognate
statements and 10,460 differing statement pairs, most of them type
generalisations rather than synonyms or contradictions; the within-prover
census shows a name is not an identity even inside one corpus.

Status: proposed. Owner decisions D1–D5 are listed in the ADR instead of
being asked, because the session was ending.

CI: T1 Guix manifest check is red on this PR, and it is not this PR's failure.

  • What fails: the Install Guix step (sudo apt-get install -y --fix-missing guix) exits 100 with E: Unable to locate package guix. ubuntu-latest is now 24.04, whose archive carries no guix package, so the manifest-resolution step never runs.
  • Why it is not this PR's: the diff touches only docs/decisions/2026-10-19-lexicon-v2-and-identity-arbitration.adoc and scripts/false_friend_scan.sh. The same job fails identically on main at 0d0aa0c (run 39319565234, job 118289791024, step Install Guix). The job is continue-on-error: true (allow-fail per CI: allow-fail units need an owner and an expiry (ultraplan Phase 2.3) #416, expiry 2026-11-30), so the workflow run still reports success and this check does not block the PR.
  • Fix: none exists yet as a PR, so nothing is ported here. Proposed patch for its own PR: pin that one job to a runner whose archive still ships Guix (runs-on: ubuntu-22.04, guix 1.3.0), or replace the apt step with the upstream guix-install.sh route. If CI: allow-fail units need an owner and an expiry (ultraplan Phase 2.3) #416's expiry is meant to retire the job instead, delete it then.
  • No re-run requested: the failure is deterministic (package absent from the archive), not a flake.

CI: governance / JS runtimes — environment provisions Bun first is red, and it is not this PR's failure either.

  • What fails: the Build js-runtimes step. cargo install --locked --path .standards-js/tools/js-runtimes exits 101 with current package believes it's in a workspace when it's not: the sparse checkout of hyperpolymath/standards lands inside echidna's Cargo workspace root, and at the pinned standards SHA (75bd599) the tools/js-runtimes crate has no [workspace] table of its own. The provisioning check itself never runs.
  • Why it is not this PR's: the diff touches no Cargo, workflow or environment file. The same job fails at the same step on main at 0d0aa0c (run 39319566607, job 118289796689) and at ed6ef60; fix(ci): re-pin standards reusables and repair actions.lock #439's description already records it ("stays red until fix(js-runtimes): make the crate its own Cargo workspace root standards#1296 merges and the pin moves past it").
  • The fix exists upstream and is merged: standards 1fed802 (#1299) adds [workspace] to tools/js-runtimes/Cargo.toml, with a comment naming exactly this error. The echidna pin 75bd599 predates it.
  • Why nothing is ported here: porting means bumping the six standards reusable pins (governance, hypatia-scan, mirror, scorecard, secret-scanner, spark-theatre-gate) to a SHA at or after 1fed802 and regenerating .github/workflows/actions.lock with the estate chain (gh actions-lock + regen_lock, as the one-off zz-one-off-lock-regen.yml does). This session has no gh, and a pin bump without its lock record makes every standards caller fail at startup (fix(ci): re-pin standards reusables and repair actions.lock #439), which would turn a green check red. That bump + lock regen is its own small PR; I will open it on request, or it can ride the next lock-regen run.
  • governance / Validate Hypatia Baseline is red here too, and it is the same failure as on main. Compared finding-by-finding, the PR head and main at 0d0aa0c (job 118291321705) produce identical sets with the same scanner commit (51ab649): 80 baseline-acknowledged findings (Re-arm the hypatia baseline gate: generate .hypatia-baseline.json (152 findings to grandfather + burn down) #314) and 3 unbaselined ones, all on .github/workflows/actions.lock — unsupported_version "v0.0.3": the lock regenerated in Claude/new session th4e9w lockregen #441 is in the v0.0.3 format, which the pinned Hypatia scanner does not parse yet. Nothing this PR adds is flagged. The fix is a Hypatia scanner ref that understands v0.0.3 (or a baseline entry for that finding), not a change here.
  • No re-run requested: all three failures are deterministic.

…the measured property

Review findings on #443 (CodeRabbit), each reproduced before the change:

- The final `awk … | head -24` made head close the pipe while awk was still
writing; under `set -o pipefail` the finished scan exited 141 (SIGPIPE).
awk now stops itself after eight pairs and head is gone. Exit is 0.
- `$2 == $3` compared numeric-looking goals numerically (`01` == `1`); both
  comparisons now force string comparison.
- `uniq -d` inherited the caller's locale while `sort` ran under LC_ALL=C;
  uniq runs under LC_ALL=C too.
- The ADR called the 1,030 cognates "byte-identical"; the script compares
after whitespace normalisation, so the ADR now says that.
- The lexicon v2 `evidence` field: `curated` is provenance only and lifts to
  `FidelityEvidence::None`; `kernel` needs `checked_by`; only `probe` and a
complete `kernel` lift to the arbiter's constructors.

The counts are unchanged (95,740/90,170/3,755; 43,937/42,456/1,218; 5,060
shared; 11,490 pairs; 1,030 cognate; 10,460 differing).

…rries independence and injectivity

Codex review findings on #443:

- The extractor admitted rows with an empty theorem name or an empty goal
(three in HOL4, twelve in Why3, more in lambda_prolog), which could join
as "cognates" with nothing to compare. Rows whose trimmed name or
whitespace-normalised goal is empty are now dropped before the TSV is
written. The affected census rows move by a few units (HOL4 95,738 /
  90,168; AFP, ACL2, Why3, lambda_prolog likewise); the HOL4 ↔ HOL Light
overlap and agreement counts are unchanged.
- The ADR claimed the exchange renderings fail safe. They do not: the
OpenTheory renderer collapses unsupported terms to one opaque constant
and drops binder types, so distinct terms can hash alike. The ADR now
says so and requires an injective rendering with unsupported terms
rejected before any KernelTranslation is built (decision 5, PR 6).
- The ADR claimed no arbiter or ABI change was needed, yet asked for probe
independence that DeclaredCorrespondence cannot carry and fidelity_level
does not check. It now specifies a standpoint record on
DeclaredCorrespondence, an Epi lift only when standpoints differ, and the
matching Arbitration.idr argument (option B, decision 3, PR 4), and calls
the change what it is: additive.
