Summary

Configure LIBVA_DRIVERS_PATH and bundle hardware VA-API driver packages (mesa, intel-media-driver, and intel-vaapi-driver) in the Nix package wrapper and devShell.

On Linux, OpenScreen prefers VA-API for hardware video encoding before Vulkan or software fallback (libopenh264). However, in isolated Nix environments:

  1. libva fails to locate graphics drivers when running on NixOS hosts where Intel media drivers are not explicitly installed in hardware.graphics.extraPackages, or on non-NixOS Linux distros without FHS driver paths in LIBVA_DRIVERS_PATH.
  2. When VA-API fails, screen recording falls back to CPU software encoding, which drops frames on high-resolution/high-framerate captures (e.g. 4K@60) and can cause timeouts upon stopping capture.

This change:

  • Includes mesa (for AMD/Nouveau/VirtIO) and conditionally includes intel-media-driver (iHD, Gen 9+ / Broadwell to Arrow/Lunar Lake) and intel-vaapi-driver (i965) for x86_64-linux.
  • Gates Intel driver evaluations behind stdenv.hostPlatform.isx86_64 so aarch64-linux evaluations do not fail on x86-only driver derivations.
  • Suffixes LIBVA_DRIVERS_PATH in makeWrapper and devShells with /run/opengl-driver/lib/dri, the bundled driver paths, and /usr/lib/dri / /usr/lib64/dri fallbacks.

📝 Walkthrough

The Nix package and development shell now configure LIBVA_DRIVERS_PATH with Mesa, Intel drivers on x86_64, and system DRI directories. The package receives optional Intel media and VA-API driver inputs.

Developers using a custom VA-API driver directory may lose hardware acceleration in the development shell. Preserve that path when setting the shell defaults; this is a bounded developer-workflow risk.
