Cause
With the system-cursor setting, the PipeWire helper asks the portal for the EMBEDDED cursor mode. niri's portal does not offer it, so negotiate refused and nothing was recorded.

Fix

  • The helper probes the offered cursor modes before ready and resolves EMBEDDED to METADATA when only METADATA is available (CursorMode::resolve). The portal, the click readers and ready all use the resolved mode.
  • ready now carries cursorMode. LinuxNativeCaptureSession.cursorMode exposes it, and the start handler records the take as editable-overlay when METADATA was negotiated, so the cursor samples are saved and the editor draws the pointer.
  • No change when EMBEDDED is offered. Older helpers that omit cursorMode keep the requested mode.

Tests

  • Rust: resolve unit tests and the ready serialization test. cargo test in WSL with the flake-pinned rustc 1.97.1: 104 passed.
  • npx vitest --run electron/native-bridge/capture electron/native-bridge/cursor/recording: 67 passed, including two new session tests.
  • npx tsc --noEmit, npx tsc -p tsconfig.test.json --noEmit: clean. npm run lint: no new diagnostics.

Not verified
A real capture on a portal without EMBEDDED (niri). Needs a desktop session and the portal picker, so not run here.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Linux screen recording now negotiates cursor display modes with the system portal.
    • When the requested cursor mode is unavailable, recording can fall back to metadata-based cursor rendering when supported.
    • Recording status now reports the cursor mode selected for the session.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Preserves the requested cursor mode when no alternative is available or reported.
    • Webcam overlays now use the cursor mode selected for the active recording session.

Some ScreenCast portals (niri's) offer no EMBEDDED cursor mode, so the
system-cursor setting refused to record. The helper now negotiates
METADATA there and reports the mode in ready; the app then records the
cursor as editable, so the editor draws it.

📝 Walkthrough

Linux native capture now resolves cursor modes against portal capabilities. The helper reports the resolved mode in its ready event. The capture session retains the reported mode, and recording and webcam attachment use the stored mode.

Changes: Linux cursor mode negotiation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Resolve portal cursor modes
electron/native/pipewire-capture/src/portal.rs, electron/native/pipewire-capture/src/main.rs
The helper retrieves offered cursor modes. It resolves an unsupported Embedded request to Metadata when Metadata is offered. Tests cover fallback and unresolved modes.
Report and retain negotiated mode
electron/native/pipewire-capture/src/events.rs, electron/native/pipewire-capture/src/main.rs, electron/native-bridge/cursor/recording/pipeWireCursorAccumulator.ts, electron/native-bridge/capture/linuxNativeCaptureSession.ts, electron/native-bridge/capture/linuxNativeCaptureSession.test.ts
The ready event carries cursorMode. The capture session retains supported helper-reported modes or falls back to its configured mode. Tests cover both cases.
Apply negotiated mode
electron/ipc/handlers.ts, src/hooks/useScreenRecorder.ts, src/hooks/useScreenRecorder.nativeLinuxWebcamCursor.test.tsx
The IPC handler maps Metadata to editable-overlay. Linux webcam attachment uses the stored session mode and falls back to the current hook mode. Tests cover stored editable-overlay and system modes.

Pass the effective cursor mode to webcam attachment.

After Linux stop, the attachment call forwards the requested cursorCaptureMode, not the negotiated mode. If the helper resolves system to metadata, the attachment can overwrite editable-overlay with system in the session manifest and media links.

Outside-diff finding on the Linux webcam attachment: valid. Fixed in 979ab22 at the source of the payload. The renderer now forwards the mode main stored at stop (result.session?.cursorCaptureMode), so the attachment no longer overwrites editable-overlay in the manifest or media links. The renderer's own value was also stale: this callback is reached through the first render's stopRecording closure. A hook test covers both stored modes.
