Summary

Show provider-reported Agent token usage separately from the context indicator. Sum usage across observable model calls, deduplicate by run ID, and distinguish complete, partial and unavailable totals. Cache and reasoning counts remain subsets of the core totals.

Follow the requested presentation: a muted cumulative token count beside the activity indicator while a turn runs, then one short total-and-duration line under the reply, such as 12.3k tokens · 45s. Input/output/cache/reasoning details stay in the hover/focus tooltip. All 15 locales are updated.

Persist usage and elapsed time with the originating message in the existing project chat sidecar. Successful turns attach them to the reply; failed or empty turns retain them on the user message. Session/project changes, delayed loads and rewind cannot move usage into another conversation or recreate a discarded turn. Older histories without these fields remain readable.

Related issue

Fixes #1096 (approved steps 1–3; Workbench scenarios and compaction remain deferred).

Type of change

Release impact

Screenshots / video

Real Electron 41.2.1 on macOS, driven through OS computer-use with an isolated profile and a local scripted provider (synthetic token counts, no paid provider). Running totals update when completed model calls report usage and remain a lower bound; unreported tokens are not estimated. While reasoning streams, only the expandable Thinking block carries the label.

Running state:

Running turn: muted cumulative count beside the spinner and one Thinking label

Completed line:

Completed turn: total tokens and elapsed time beneath the reply

Partial usage keeps the same concise total-and-duration format, with incompleteness explained in the tooltip. Unavailable usage shows duration only.

Testing

Rebased onto main at 1e917109, preserving the newer Agent tool capabilities and stored-user-message/rewind behavior.

  • Full unit suite: 357 files passed, 1 skipped; 5,024 tests passed, 8 skipped. Coverage includes real-HTTP SDK fixtures, multi-call accounting, missing/zero usage, failures, persistence, session ownership, rewind, and live UI updates.
  • Both TypeScript configurations, npm run i18n:check, and npm run build-vite passed. npm run lint:fix reported no errors and 26 existing warnings. Final UI checks: 33 tests passed. Both TypeScript checks, the Vite build and docs check were rerun for this follow-up.
  • Real Electron 41.2.1 on macOS 15.8 with an isolated profile and a local scripted provider: checked running/completed presentation, switching away and back during a turn, and full quit/relaunch recovery of totals and durations. The other conversation stayed empty; no stale running indicator appeared there.
  • Manual checklist result: Partial, chat presentation only. Capture/preview/export, native binaries, paid-provider billing and Windows/Linux were skipped; this is not release-promotion QA.

Known limitations

Provider-reported usage is not a billing ledger: hidden SDK HTTP retries are not observable. The locked SDK drops explicit zero output usage in nonstreaming ChatOpenAI; that response remains partial rather than guessing missing values. Running totals update at model-call completion, when authoritative usage is available.

No dependency changes, new database, Workbench scenarios, compaction changes, or execution-step/Markdown UI (#1169).

📝 Walkthrough

Agent turns now report aggregated token usage and duration. Chat messages persist this metadata. The transcript displays live and completed usage summaries with localized labels. Project, session, and turn checks reject stale asynchronous results.

Changes: Chat usage reporting

Layer / File(s) Summary
Usage contract and turn accounting
src/native/contracts.ts, electron/ai-edition/deep-agent/*
The AgentTurnUsage contract and accumulator normalize provider metadata, aggregate model-call usage, classify completeness, and return snapshots from agent execution.
Message persistence and turn binding
electron/ai-edition/chat-persistence.ts, electron/ai-edition/chat-service.ts, electron/ipc/nativeBridge.ts, electron/ai-edition/*test.ts
Persistence validates usage and duration. Chat execution forwards usage events, stores metadata with the originating turn, and rejects results after project, session, or user-message changes.
Transcript state and usage display
src/components/ai-edition/*, src/i18n/locales/*/editor.json, technical-documentation/testing/manual-e2e-checklist.md
The transcript carries live and persisted usage through session operations and renders localized token and duration summaries. Tests and manual results cover usage states, persistence, and stale asynchronous results.

Explanation

The PR satisfies the implementation requirements for [#1096] steps 1–3. The code and tests cover multi-call aggregation, deduplication, partial and unavailable states, metadata persistence, session ownership, restart recovery, rewind, and UI presentation. Sorry for the slow answer @auberginewly, here's the direction on presentation: no need to invent anything, just follow what users already know from coding agents like Claude Code.

  • While a turn runs: a live, muted token count next to the activity indicator.
  • When it ends: one short line under the reply with the total and the duration (e.g. 12.3k tokens · 45s).
  • No input/output/cache breakdown in the chat itself; the tooltip can stay for that if it costs nothing.

Your usage tracking and persistence work stays as is, it's only the visible part. Please rebase on main (it conflicts now) and mark the PR ready, and I'll review it.

Thanks, that’s clear. I’ll follow this presentation: a live muted token count beside the activity indicator, then a short total-and-duration line under the reply. I’ll keep the breakdown in the tooltip, rebase onto main, resolve the conflicts, and mark the PR ready for review.

Updated and rebased onto main; this is now ready for review.

The running count sits beside the activity indicator, and completed replies show a compact total plus elapsed time. Input/output/cache/reasoning details remain in the tooltip. Running totals update when completed model calls report usage and are marked as a lower bound; unreported tokens are not estimated. The existing accounting and persistence behavior is preserved, with elapsed time saved alongside each turn.

Validation: 5,023 tests passed (8 skipped), both TypeScript checks, i18n and Vite build passed; lint has no errors and 26 existing warnings. In real Electron on macOS, a scripted two-call turn showed “≥10.3k tokens” while running and “12.3k tokens · 15s” when done. I also checked switching away/back during a turn and restoring the totals and durations after a full restart. The manual checklist records the chat-only slice and what was skipped.

Thanks, this follows the direction closely: live muted count by the spinner, 12.3k tokens · 15s under the reply, breakdown in the tooltip. A few small things before merge:

  1. manual-e2e-checklist.md:998: drop the blank line so the 2026-10-21 row stays in the Results log table (CodeRabbit is right).
  2. ChatUsageSummary.tsx:24-29: keep the chat line to total + duration only. For partial usage show 12.3k tokens · 45s; for unavailable show just the duration. The "known… incomplete" / "unavailable" nuance can live in the tooltip.
  3. LeftPanel.tsx:1572/1581: "Thinking" now appears twice while reasoning streams (spinner row and ThinkingBlock label). Please keep one.
  4. Could you attach a screenshot of the running state and of the completed line?

🟡 Minor · Reload the current session after a send overtakes session loading. · LeftPanel.tsx:615

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Reload the current session after a send overtakes session loading.

If an existing session is still loading when send() starts, the transcript version check discards that load. Successful and failed completion paths then update only the optimistic turn, so earlier messages remain hidden. Selecting another session and then the affected session restores the history.

Trigger the existing session reload after the turn completes and after activeTurnRef is cleared. A reload before that point is skipped by the load effect. This is a localized, low-risk correction; history merging is not required.
