feat: gifs integration with your favorite provider (giphy|klipy|any) - #367
I'm missing gifs but adding klipy|giphy|any could be expensive for a social network like this (unless you bring your own key for your own consumption) so what if a dev can bring their key to have them available :) ? so that way we defer the rate limit and caps to the user.
⚠️ The gif composer action button is only available if the user adds a key, so totally opt-in.
Question for Gifs/meme ninjas
Do we really want to go to giphy/klipy/google to search for a gif then copy and paste the url like if we were in the stone age?
Important
dev/null won't store any API KEYs, instead every developer/user will store the Gifs provider key in their localstorage.
The feature works great with the AI moderation system :)

New setting :) bring your favorite Gifs provider with your own API KEY. (localstorage storage)
Getting a Provider API key is easy.
For instance:
Kiply
KLIPY gives you access to a high-performance API for Clips, GIFs, Stickers, Memes and AI Emojis, designed to make your app more fun, expressive, and sticky.
Generate your Key
Visit the Partner Panel, navigate to API Keys and create your platform.
Note: While your key is in Testing mode, it is limited to 100 API requests per hour.
There is no fee to use a beta key, which are rate limited (100 searches/API calls per hour). If you need more than 100 API calls per hour. There is a fee to upgrade to an unlimited Production Key. Once your application is submitted, a member of the GIPHY team will be in touch to discuss pricing.
Nice thing of being a developer ✨
Improved image action
Slash command
Browsable API.
Implementation notes
GIF support is opt-in: each user stores a provider key in localStorage, and the browser calls GIPHY or KLIPY directly. The server never receives the key.
Providers share one adapter interface (search, trending, validateKey). Adding another provider is a registry entry plus an adapter.
The composer has one media button. With a key it opens a menu for image upload or the GIF picker; without one it stays the existing image picker.
/gif is a client-side composer command. It appears only when a key exists and no GIF is attached; a lone /gif plus whitespace clears the draft and opens the picker without entering issue mode.
Images and GIFs are mutually exclusive, and a GIF cannot be scheduled. The server revalidates the picked GIF URL (HTTPS, per-provider host allow-list) before storing it.
GIFs live in commit_gifs, one-to-one with commits and cascade-deleted, rather than in columns on commits.
Covered by Pest feature tests for validation and exclusivity, plus front-end unit tests for command parsing, the media button, and the main, reply, and quote composers.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Search and select GIFs from GIPHY or Klipy after configuring a provider in profile settings.
Attach GIFs to commits, replies, and quoted posts, with previews and provider attribution.
GIF details appear in commit responses and feed enclosures.
Use /gif to open the picker when a provider is configured.
Notes
GIFs can’t be scheduled or combined with images or polls.
Documentation
Expanded the README with setup, sign-in, API, and feature guidance.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
This pull request adds GIF selection from GIPHY and KLIPY to commit, quote, and reply composers. It validates and stores GIF metadata, adds GIF data to commit outputs, and includes attached GIFs in moderation. The README adds setup, API, and operations documentation.
Adds GIF data to commit serialization and API responses, renders GIFs on commit cards, and includes GIFs in page metadata, Atom feeds, and moderation inputs.

Possibly related issues
dev-null-sh/dev-null.sh#973 — The change sends attached GIFs to moderation, which partially addresses the issue’s request to check public commit content.
Resolve the moderation memory risks and reject unsupported scheduled GIF submissions before merging. Failed image uploads can also make users lose a selected GIF, and the signed API guidance can mislead media-upload clients.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to bfa26
Provider-specific URL validation and transactional creation contain much of the new exposure. However, moderation checks only an animation’s first frame while publishing the original GIF, and permanent content erasure leaves GIF metadata behind. These are bounded but meaningful content-safety and data-lifecycle gaps.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · observed: The new GIF moderation path checks a first-frame WebP and can approve the commit, but readers receive the original animated URL. Later frames are outside this check. Provider filters in the browser do not enforce a server-side content-rating boundary for direct submissions.
Medium · security · observed: The new commit_gifs record survives permanent commit-content erasure. Deletion retains the parent as a soft-deleted tombstone, while DeleteCommitContent removes images and polls but not the GIF relation. The foreign-key cascade therefore does not erase the GIF URLs, metadata and commit association. Normal tombstone responses omit this data, limiting the demonstrated issue to incomplete retention cleanup rather than public disclosure.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — An authenticated poster can submit provider-constrained GIF metadata to the shared commit/reply path without relying on the picker’s client-side filters. The resulting exposure spans shared moderation-worker processing, application-database metadata and readers of approved posts, including guests. No arbitrary host access, cross-account mutation or privilege escalation was established.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — A poster selecting an allowed-provider animation with a benign first frame and unsafe later frames can evade the new GIF-specific image check. This is a coverage gap in the new attachment approval path, not evidence of exploitation or a claim that preexisting external links were fully moderated.
observed — After the undo window closes, content erasure preserves the GIF’s metadata and association in the database. Tombstone serialization prevents ordinary deleted-post responses from returning the relation, so the demonstrated privacy impact is retained data rather than a verified public retrieval path.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Server-side provider and URL rules, rather than browser key possession or search filters, form the attachment-input boundary. Reply authorization checks parent visibility, and public queries require approval except for the existing author visibility allowance.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The new fetch has a ten-second timeout and a 20 MiB rejection threshold, but checks size only after obtaining the response body. The 1600-pixel scaling also occurs during image processing rather than providing a pre-decode dimension check. These controls do not establish an early transfer or decode-memory bound.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Consider transfer-time byte limits and pre-decode pixel limits for GIF moderation, with explicit worker resource budgets. This would strengthen failure containment; the inspected evidence does not establish an exploitable denial-of-service condition.

Limit decoded GIF frames before scaling.
The 20 MiB check limits compressed bytes, but usingGd() decodes an animated GIF before scale() runs. A GIF with many frames can exhaust worker memory while still passing that check. Decode only a bounded still frame and check its dimensions before allocating the moderation image. The new tests use a single-frame GIF, so they do not exercise this path. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Reject GIF fields in scheduled commit requests.

Remove the eager GIF clear from the quote composer image upload callback.
The callback clears the selected GIF before the image read runs. If the read adds no image, the GIF stays cleared. The image-presence effect cannot restore it, and no replacement is set. A selected image also triggers the effect, so the clear is not needed to keep images and GIFs exclusive.
The same pattern appears in commit-composer.tsx and commit-thread.tsx. Each needs its own edit, because the shared hook has no GIF access.
