Summary

Voice messages and pings are not useful while a call is active, so the remote composer now removes those actions during a direct or org call.

Changes

  • Exposed the existing active-call state for reuse in the composer.
  • Hide the voice-note recording and ping controls while a call is being placed, received, joined, or connected.
  • Keep text and image messaging available during calls.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements
    • The chat composer hides voice-note recording and ping controls while a call is active, including when an organization call is ringing. If a call becomes active during a voice-note recording, the recording is discarded. When no call is active, both controls remain available.

Walkthrough

The call-state hooks now distinguish calls in progress from active calls. The composer discards an in-progress voice note and hides voice-note recording and ping controls when a call is active.

Changes: Call State and Composer Controls

Layer / File(s) Summary
Export call-state hooks
resources/js/components/chat/call.tsx
The exported useIsOnCall reports direct calls and org calls in joining or joined states. The exported useIsCallActive also returns true for ringing org calls. Call components use useIsOnCall for busy-state checks.
Manage composer controls during calls
resources/js/components/chat/conversation-thread.tsx
Composer uses useIsCallActive to discard an in-progress voice note and hide voice-note recording and ping controls during active calls. Existing recording eligibility checks and ping error handling remain in place.

Change: Other

Suggested reviewers: nunomaduro

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to cafd9

A call arriving while a voice note is being encoded can silently lose the submitted recording. Preserve that pending send before merging; incoming organization-call controls are otherwise correctly disabled.

Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to cafd9

Incoming calls can now erase an unsent voice note before the recipient answers, including calls from a muted organization. Organization membership limits who can trigger this, but the new behavior can disrupt drafts in unrelated conversations.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: An organization member can cause other members' mounted Composers to discard unsent voice notes merely by starting a call, without those recipients accepting it. Muted organization calls also trigger this because mute suppresses sound but does not exclude the ringing snapshot. The Composer applies the global predicate without matching the call to its conversation, and discard clears the draft and invalidates pending encoding. This newly gives incoming call activity destructive influence over unrelated local drafts.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A caller with ordinary organization membership can affect other members' local, unsent voice-note state when their clients observe the new call. The global predicate can affect an unrelated conversation's mounted Composer. The supported impact is loss of a local draft and temporary suppression of voice-note and ping controls, not access to recordings or deletion of delivered messages.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A malicious organization member can start a call while another member is composing a voice note. The recipient's next eligible poll selects that ringing call, and the new effect discards the note before the recipient joins. Muting the organization does not prevent this path: muted calls remain in the response and snapshot, while is_muted is checked only for audible ringing. The base Composer had no corresponding call-triggered discard.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Declining an organization call clears its ringing snapshot and suppresses that same call instance. Ringing also expires by call age. These controls can end action suppression, but they do not restore a draft already cleared by discard.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Cancellation invalidates late local results and releases recording resources rather than keeping a stale microphone session alive. This contains resource and stale-draft failures, but safe cleanup does not resolve whether incoming remote activity should have authority to destroy the draft.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Separate action visibility and microphone cleanup from irreversible draft deletion. Incoming ringing can hide controls and stop recording while retaining a recoverable draft; destructive discard can require recipient acceptance or explicit cancellation. Apply an explicit policy for muted calls and calls unrelated to the Composer target.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "Disable remote actions during calls" matches the main change. The PR hides the voice-note recording and ping controls in the remote composer while a direct or org call is active, and it exposes the active-call state for that reuse. The title is specific and concise. It does not name the composer or the voice-note and ping controls, but it still describes the primary behavior change.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 100.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 6 functions across 2 files.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Include incoming org calls in the composer state.

An incoming org call sets ringingOrgCallSnapshot() while orgCallSnapshot() remains idle. useIsOnCall() therefore returns false, and both controls remain available while the org call rings. Subscribe to the ringing snapshot for the composer. Keep the existing busy state separate where changing it would hide the org call invitation. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Preserve an in-flight Push and restore text controls.

When isCallActive becomes true while pushVoiceNote() awaits voiceNote.stop(), the hook remains non-idle with status encoding. The effect calls discardVoiceNote(), invalidates the pending stop, and causes pushVoiceNote() to return before sendMessage().

Only excluding encoding from the discard condition is insufficient. isVoicing also selects VoiceNoteComposer and routes submit events to pushVoiceNote(). Derive it as false for call-active encoding, while using the raw non-idle state for discard decisions:
