feat: tell API clients which users are live - #1274
API clients can't tell who is live: the web gets each user's stream through Inertia, but UserResource never sends it. An app would need a request per user to mark live avatars.
UserResource now carries live. Every endpoint that shows a user goes through it, so an app knows who is live wherever a user appears, with no extra request.
Same rule as the web (User::liveStream()): live turns null as soon as ends_at passes, before EndLiveStreams clears the columns. ends_at is always set when live isn't null, so an app can drop the badge on time without refetching.
No extra query: the live_* columns are on users, and the stream URLs are built without any request.

Validation
New tests: a YouTube and a Twitch stream on a profile, a stream that ran out shows null, and the log tells a live author from one who isn't.
The 8 tests that assert a whole user's JSON now expect 'live' => null.
Locally, full Pest suite: 4,752/4,800 passed, no failure. The 48 errors were missing tables, because a second Pest run shared the testing database. Their 6 files (61 tests) pass when run alone.
pint, phpstan and rector pass on the changed files. Coverage is left to CI: pcov isn't installed locally.
Checked by hand on the dev server: GET /api/v1/users/{handle} returns "live": null for a user who isn't live.
Independent review
Separate Claude agent, base 6973ac91, head b20c29a5: CODE: PASS. Visual review doesn't apply, nothing in the UI changes.
Checked: the expiry rule matches the web, platform and ends_at are never null when live isn't, no extra query (no user load with restricted columns reaches UserResource), and nothing shows beyond what the web already shows guests.
Both non-blocking notes are addressed in the commits after b20c29a5:
platform and ends_at are now typed as strings in the @return shape (b06075d5);
the log test is renamed after what it checks (f396efa5). It counted no queries, which its old name suggested.
After those commits: phpstan, pint and rector pass, and so do the 846 API tests.
Limitations
Read only: going live or ending a stream from the API is left for another PR.

New Features
User profiles and related API responses now include live stream details when a supported stream is active, including its platform, URL, thumbnail, and end time.
The live field is null when no eligible active stream is available.
Apps had no way to know who is streaming: the web gets the live stream
through Inertia, but UserResource never sent it.
UserResource now has a live field, null or the stream the user is on
(platform, url, thumbnail_url, ends_at). Every endpoint that shows a user
goes through UserResource (commit authors, notification actors, profiles,
connections, conversations...), so an app can mark who is live in a list
without asking for each profile. The columns are already on users and
the stream URLs are computed without any request, so it adds no query.
It uses the same rule as the web: a stream that ran out is null even
before EndLiveStreams clears it, and ends_at lets an app drop the badge
on time without refetching.

Walkthrough
User API representations now include a live field. The field contains stream details and an ISO-8601 end time when the stream data has the required types; otherwise, it is null. Tests cover active and absent streams across API responses.
Changes: User live-stream serialization
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Serialize live-stream data app/Http/Resources/UserResource.php
UserResource adds a live field. It contains the platform, stream data, and formatted end time when the stream, platform, and end time have the required types; otherwise, it is null.
The live-stream field is consistently serialized across the inspected API responses without an identified correctness or performance regression.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to f396e
This is a broad but additive API contract change. Stream links were already publicly visible, and the change reuses existing input validation and expiry behavior. No introduced authorization bypass was established. The principal change is wider access to stream metadata, including its expiry time.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — Any caller able to obtain a user through the shared resource can now obtain that user's active stream metadata. The disclosure scope includes unsigned public-profile and user-list responses, rather than only the requesting user's account. Stream links were already public on web profiles; the API adds structured platform and expiry information.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Live-state mutation remains behind authenticated web settings routes and operates on the current user. The request validates provider-supported URLs and bounds the requested duration; the action stores the normalized provider URL and expiry. The new resource only reads that state.

Explanation
The title "feat: tell API clients which users are live" matches the main change. The PR adds a live field to UserResource, so API clients can see each user's current stream. The raw summary and objectives confirm the field is null when a user is not live, and the tests cover live status on profiles, commit authors, and notifications. The title is short, specific, and uses the conventional commit prefix.

Add a query-count check for live authors to the live-author test.
The test named "tells which authors are live without asking for each one" does not count queries. The existing query-count test does not use live authors, so no test currently guards against a per-author query on the live field. The current code reads the stream from the user's own columns, so this is a coverage gap, not a present N+1 defect.

When live isn't null, platform and ends_at are always set: liveStream()
only returns a stream for a platform and an end in the future. The shape
said both could be null, which an app reading the types would have to
handle for nothing. The resource now checks all three explicitly, so the
shape types them as strings.
