feat: notify voters when a poll closes, with the results in - #1216
DevNull polls tell you the results only while you remember to look: you vote, the poll closes hours or days later, and you never learn the outcome (#1215). Now every poll that closes notifies the people who voted in it that the results are in. The notification opens the poll's commit, so a vote from days before never needs scrolling back for. The poll's author is not notified: they set the duration and see the results throughout. Closes#854 (the issue #1215 asked for the same thing and was closed as its duplicate).
Changes
CreatePollEndedNotifications, a one-shot action: one poll_ended notification per distinct voter, written with a single insertOrIgnore batch that is safe to run more than once. The row carries the poll's commit in both commit_id and subject_id — the notifications schema constrains subject_id to commits — with the recipient-scoped dedupe key poll-ended:{commit_id} (a commit carries at most one poll). The actor is the commit's author, so the inbox's existing mute and block silencing (SilencedActorQuery reuse, no new query paths) applies to these rows exactly as it does to stars, mentions and replies.
polls:notify-ended, a scheduled command (every minute): scans polls opened, whose voting window has elapsed, and that closed within the past day — one missed run does not lose a notification — ordering by opened_at then id in capped batches of 100. The window arithmetic uses opened_at + make_interval(mins => duration), which runs on both PG17 and the CI's PG18 image. A failing poll logs, reports, and lets the run continue with the rest; the command then exits non-zero so the scheduler's failed-job story stays honest.
NotificationType::PollEnded sits alongside LeveledUp in the inbox's plain "All" bucket — no new filter bucket — where the inbox already renders generic <Notification> rows. The frontend renders these with the ChartBar icon and copy "closed a poll you voted in — the results are in", deep-linking to the poll's commit.
NotificationFactory::pollEnded() state: honors the caller's actor/recipient like quoted()/replied() do — it lazily builds a closed, approved-commit poll with one vote from the recipient, so acceptance tests for grouping and silencing can express this type in one line.
Validation
All results below are from a local replication of the hosted CI matrix (Rocky Linux 9, podman pgvector/pgvector:pg18 on port-mapped PG, PHP 8.5 CLI with pdo_pgsql, pcntl, pcov, gd etc. via docker-php-ext, Node 24 where the CI uses Node 26, Bun 1.4.4):
composer test:lint: pint --parallel --test — PASS over 1,275 files; rector --dry-run — OK; bun run test:lint (vp fmt --check + vp lint) — pass, 0 errors (17 pre-existing warnings in files this PR does not touch).
composer test:types: phpstan — no errors; bun run test:types (tsc for app and tests) — no errors.
composer test:type-coverage: pest --type-coverage --min=100 — 100.0%.
composer test:unit: pest --parallel --coverage --exactly=100.0 — 4,560 passed (25,477 assertions), total coverage exactly 100.0% (96-core machine, run held to 8 paratest workers after the default 96 exhausted PG's max_connections; 4560 includes the 5 new action tests, 4 command tests, the poll cases in the builder suite, the type-enum case, and the inbox-tsx case); wayfinder:generate — OK; node --experimental-strip-types --test — 200/200, including the new renders poll results with their poll commit destination.
bun run build — success (3,372 modules).
Behavior against a migrated devnull PG database, not just fixtures: a script creating an author, two voters, a closed poll with two votes then asserted, all OK — the command picks the closed poll up and reports "Notified the voters of 1 closed polls."; both voters have exactly one poll_ended row with actor = poll author, commit/subject = the poll's commit, key poll-ended:{commit}; the author has none; relevant() shows the row to both voters; a second run inserts nothing; muting the author hides the row and unmuting restores it; a poll that closed three days before is skipped; an unopened poll with votes is skipped.
Hosted CI: not yet run on this PR; the local run mirrors it (same PHP extensions list, zend.assertions=1, pcov coverage) — failures will be addressed if any surface.
Visual evidence
The only visible change is one new row kind in the notifications inbox. This environment cannot log into the app (GitHub OAuth needs client credentials that are not present locally), so no browser screenshots or recordings could be taken; the app's own screenshots are unchanged. As the visual proxy, the inbox component was rendered server-side in the node test suite with a poll_ended fixture, asserting the "closed a poll you voted in — the results are in" copy and the /@quoter/commits/poll-commit link target — pass. The row reuses the existing <Notification> layout unmodified, so no layout shift beyond one more standard-height list row applies.
Device verification
Not applicable: no mobile interaction, routing, safe area, or input behavior changed. The one touched component is covered by the node component test above; device-level verification would repeat the inbox's existing unchanged behavior.
Independent review
Agent-created pull request, reviewed before publication against base 8ac93e07 → head 6a2b7533 (same revision pushed here):
CODE: PASS
VISUAL: PASS — with the reviewer's recorded reason: the UI delta is one inbox row rendered pixel-for-pixel by the existing <Notification> component whose layout this PR does not change; component-level render assertions passed where browser screenshots were unobtainable (no login credentials in the local environment).
Verification limits: visual confirmation is component-level, not human-in-a-browser; scheduled-command timing behavior under a real scheduler was exercised command-by-command (idempotency, scan window), not by waiting on the minute-tick.
Limitations
None beyond the recorded visual-verification limit above. The feature keeps the schema, query surfaces, and frontend rendering patterns of the existing notification types unchanged, so the blast radius matches them; hosted CI will restate the local gates if merged.

Schedules a command to select polls that closed within the past day and create notifications for voters. Tests cover poll selection, duplicate runs, failures, and processing more than 100 polls.
Adds poll-ended notifications to the inbox type and display, with a chart icon, results text, and a link to the poll commit. The documentation describes the notification and its appearance in the All view.
dev-null-sh/dev-null.sh#678 — Establishes notification filtering and read-state behavior used by the new poll-ended notification type.
Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 669b9
Polls are no longer held behind a fixed batch limit, and repeat scans do not duplicate voter notifications. The reviewed change is mergeable after normal checks.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to b97a5
The new workflow retains recipient ownership, approved-content filtering, and mute/block controls. Database uniqueness contains duplicate delivery across retries. No concrete security weakness was established, but deployment compatibility and incomplete review coverage leave some uncertainty.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The producer operates across all eligible polls and writes into the shared notification table, so its operational reach is application-wide. Individual recipients remain limited to each poll's stored voters; notification consumption remains scoped to the authenticated recipient.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The new producer consumes server-stored vote identities rather than a caller-supplied recipient list. Existing voting validation rejects author votes and closed or unapproved polls. Inbox queries enforce recipient ownership, relevance, and actor silencing, while group expansion independently verifies ownership and relevance.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — A single per-poll insertOrIgnore statement, backed by recipient/key uniqueness, makes retries and concurrent producers converge without duplicate notification rows. Cascading commit, recipient, and actor references contain orphaned data after deletion. Races can fail an individual insertion, but the command isolates that failure and retries while the poll remains eligible.

Explanation
Issue #854 requests a reminder notification for poll-based commits. The pull request implements this requirement with CreatePollEndedNotifications and the scheduled polls:notify-ended command. The action creates one deduplicated poll_ended notification for each voter. The notification links to the poll commit. The inbox renders the notification in the existing All bucket. Added unit, feature, enum, query, and inbox tests cover the behavior. The poll author is excluded, which matches the current pull request intent and does not conflict with the issue's unspecified audience.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changed files support issue #854. The action, command, schedule, notification type, query filtering, factory, frontend type and rendering, documentation, and tests implement or verify poll-ended reminders. The changes add no unrelated feature, dependency, schema, or administrative change. The author exclusion and existing notification silencing behavior are supporting behavior for this reminder.

Hi @teethwolf0310,
the poll completion notification should be sent to all who voted and the one who created (author) that poll right?
Just wanted to confirm this sine the feature issues was raised to send the notification to author about the poll result. In the knowledge Base MD i see mentioned that it just sends to people who voted and not the author?
The author is not notified: they set the duration and see the results throughout.
Hi @aniketnale41 — correct: as implemented it notifies the people who voted, and not the author (the KNOWLEDGE_BASE.md line you quoted). I made that split deliberately, but the original request doesn't pin the audience ("send a notification mentioning that the poll is completed and results are out"), so it's genuinely worth confirming here.
My reasoning for leaving the author out:
The pain in the issue is the voter's — someone votes on day one of a seven-day poll and gets no pushed signal when the results finalize, so the outcome can get buried below newer commits. The notification closes exactly that gap.
The author picked the duration and sees the running results on their own commit the whole time, so the close moment adds no information they don't already have.
That said, the house does notify people about their own content when the event carries news: moderation decisions land on the commit author with the author as their own actor row. If poll closure should read the same way ("here's how your poll ended"), the change is small — include the poll commit author among the recipients, mirror the moderation rows' self-referencing actor, update the KB line, and extend the tests. I'm happy to push that follow-up if you and the maintainers want the author notified too.
Rebased onto the latest production (fa8d540) to clear the branch conflicts — single commit again, and no code changes beyond the conflict resolution plus the two small adaptations noted below.
Local gates on b97a503: pint, rector, phpstan, lint, tsc, unit (206/206) and build all pass, and every file this PR touches stays at 100% coverage (pest has 4,590 passing tests locally). Two notes, so nobody has to dig:
The tsx-unit-test typecheck added in 85376fd now also covers this PR's inbox test, so I rebased my pollEnded fixture onto the file's quoteCommit const (the same pattern the neighboring tests already use) to keep it typed cleanly.
A heads-up on CI: production HEAD itself is currently red on the tests check — job 122552133275 fails with "Code coverage not exactly 100.0 %, currently 98.0 %", because 752f431 landed the API controllers and requests without their tests yet. My branch shows exactly the same 98.0% for exactly the same reason, so when this PR's checks run, that same failure will show up here too. Happy to pitch in on covering the API layer as a separate effort if that would help, but I've kept this PR scoped to the poll notifications.
