feat: label code blocks with their filename - #1210
A code block can now name its file with a title after the language, and its header shows that title instead of the language:
```php title="app/Models/User.php"
filename="…" (Nextra, Next.js) works as an alias. The language still picks the highlighting, and any other fence attribute is ignored, so those blocks look the same as before.
Changes
CodeSpans reads the rest of the opening fence as key="value" pairs and {…} ranges, and returns title (or else filename) as the block's filename. Everything else, like {1,3}, showLineNumbers, tab=Pest or a bare path, is ignored. lib/code.ts mirrors it for drafts, with the same cases tested on both sides.
CodeBlock shows the filename in place of the language, truncated with the full path in title.
Block segments in the API gain a nullable filename key.
The knowledge base documents title="…".
Validation
Local, on 69c1fb4e (rebased onto 70d375b6):
composer test:lint and composer test:types pass, type coverage is 100%.
composer test:unit passes: Pest 4,811 tests at 100% coverage, and every Node and .tsx unit test.
Server and client parse 30,000 generated fence lines identically.
Layout shift is 0 on first load, client navigation from the log and a 35s polling cycle, at every viewport and theme below.
Visual evidence
Guest view of the same demo commit in Chrome (2x), production (2a22e8fe) vs this branch. The demo uses title=, filename= and ignored attributes ({1} showLineNumbers).
No mobile interaction changes, only a label. 390×844 was checked with viewport emulation in Chrome, not on hardware or a simulator.
Independent review
A separate, read-only reviewer agent (given the task, the review above, the repo guidelines, the diff and these captures) returned CODE: PASS and VISUAL: PASS for 70d375b6..69c1fb4e, media d4911d8, after checking each review point, parser parity on 90 hand-written and 30,000 generated fences, and nested fences from #1227.
Limitations
Not checked in Safari or Firefox.
The composer preview and Remotes use the same component but weren't captured; tests cover the client parser.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Fenced code blocks can display a filename from quoted title or filename metadata in the block header. When both are provided, the title is shown.
If no filename is provided, the header displays the language when available. Language labels are separated from metadata for code highlighting.
Documentation
Clarified that a title following a fenced code block’s language labels the block rather than specifying its language.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
Walkthrough
Fenced-code parsing now extracts optional filename metadata from title or filename attributes. Block segments carry a nullable filename. Code block headers display the filename when present and the language otherwise.
The server and client parsers extract filename metadata from fenced code. Block segment results include a nullable filename field. Tests cover metadata precedence, parsing cases, and missing filenames.
CommitBody passes the filename to CodeBlock. The header displays the filename when present and otherwise displays the language. Fixtures and the knowledge base reflect the filename field and display behavior.
Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 69c1f
Filename labels are carried through to code blocks, with no actionable merge risk identified.
Security architecture risk: Minimal · up to 69c1f
The added filename is display-only text. It does not select files, execute code, or change who can access content. No material security risk was identified in the changed behavior.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The new exposure is user-authored display metadata reaching existing content viewers and segment API consumers. The traced filename path does not grant filesystem, execution, or cross-tenant authority.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The new untrusted label uses ordinary React interpolation rather than raw HTML. Client code content still passes through escapeHtml, and CommitResource retains its existing signed-request branch for body segments.
Explanation
The title "feat: label code blocks with their filename" matches the main change. The PR adds a filename to code block headers when the fence uses title="..." (or filename="..." as an alias). The raw summary confirms the CodeSpans parser, lib/code.ts, CodeBlock header, and the nullable filename field in block segments. The title is short, specific, and uses the conventional feat: prefix. It does not mention the alias, the title precedence, or the API field, but those are secondary details.
For ```php title="", both captures require at least one character. The replacement leaves title="" as the filename. CodeBlock then displays title="" instead of php and sets it as the HTML title attribute.
Update the title-capture expressions in both parsers to accept an empty value,
so `title=""` produces a null filename rather than being retained as the
filename; preserve the existing language fallback so the code block displays the
language.
Awesome thanks! Some recommendations:
Make title="…" the documented syntax. Most tools support it, so it's what people will paste from other docs.
Accept filename="…" as an alias. It costs almost nothing and covers Nextra and Next.js syntax
Parse the meta string as key="value" pairs plus a {…} range, rather than one opaque string. Unknown keys (showLineNumbers, {1,3} until highlighting exists, and so on) should be ignored, not shown as the label. That keeps highlighting easy to add later with the common {1,4-6} syntax.
Drop the bare form (```php app/Models/User.php), or accept it only when it's a single token with no =, { or quotes. Only Mintlify supports it, and it's the reason {1,3} turns into a label. I'd drop it, since title= is only a few more characters.
Thanks! Done in 1892f365, also rebased onto production:
title="…" is the documented syntax.
filename="…" works as an alias (title wins if both are set).
The rest of the fence is read as key="value" pairs and {…} ranges. Anything else ({1,3}, showLineNumbers, tab=Pest) is ignored, so those blocks keep showing the language.
Rebased onto production. #1227 added a test in CodeSpans.test.ts that expects a block without filename, so it now has filename: null to work with this PR.
The CommitSearchControllerTest failure in the last run is unrelated to code blocks. It passes locally and on production, so it looks flaky.
